    It’s been 6 weeks since my Bilateral Inguial hernia repair. I knew I had a problem with one side but apparently I had it both sides. I had a lump that was showing that I could push back in. Biggest tip, pre and post surgery is take lots of stool softener before and after surgery. My bowels forgot how to work and I was in more pain from the bloated constipation than from the surgery. I eat a healthy diet so didn’t think it was necessary.

    I know what you are talking about Mark. I had an umbilical hernia and I never even knew about it. I went in to see the doctor for what I thought was a lower right side hernia and she found that one. Checking around all the places for hernia's is a little unnerving. She didn't even buy me a drink or anything to be feeling me up like that! :) Glad to see you have a direction and you should be back to a normal life very soon.

    I have just recovered from one of these and am going back for round 2 on my right side soon, as apparently when you get one side about 75% of people get the other also. My consultant is a lecturer on hernias and he advised that I get my stomach sewn up and the mesh placed on top, nuclear option, he said that sometimes people go back if they just have the mesh. Hernias do not fix themselves and can be evry dangerous. I have been in recovery for 2 months. It is looking like weight lifting is going to be severely curtailed, forever. Bugger. Not what I wanted. I am 53 and am enjoying weights right now. The last 2 months have been very challenging, sitting around doing nothing, never mind my wife having to put my socks on for the 1st week, that went down great...

    As a 1.95m tall guy who always feels like he has a “weak back”, even while doing weight lifting 3x/week and a variety of cardio work, this was certainly interesting. Thanks for sharing both your knowledge. I’ve been changing my lifestyle and coincidentally just sold my desk chair for a standing desk (and a stool for more ‘active’ sitting when I do). I’ve also started doing cobra pose, pigeon stretch, couch stretch and a few others. I need to make my quads and hips flexors more flexible. I hope this will all help in the future. Thanks again

    Been there, Mark. It's very enlightening as to how much that whole area of our body comes into the equation all day every day. You'll see after surgery just how much your ab muscles are involved in the simplest of things. I turned my head side to side, and my abs hurt post-op. Like, just turning my head. Who knew? I did have the full, open surgery, so maybe laparoscopic is less painful in the head-turning enablement area.

    Had one that did explode, resulting in a strangulated hernia. It went all of a sudden. But being a stupid man ignored it for 24 hours . Probably hoping for it to just go away! Pain got really intense so called 111, ended up in an ambulance being blue lightwd to hospital. They removed a section of Intestine that had become gangrenous! (Because I ignored it). 5 days in hospital but fully repaired!

    Spot on. Doing nothing is the WORST thing you can do. Build it back up slowly but surely. My lower back pain, going on for years, is not related to my spine....it is the muscles I am over using (squats, deadlifts etc). Crazy that running loosens it up and even a hilly 50m ultra eliminated the pain for several weeks! Natural human movement......the body loves it! We don't see these tribes doing bloody deadlifts! The problem is, being active all day long is tiring and not possible for sedentary jobs. Everything we do now is sat down! Terrible way to live. Another issue is, even if you do a morning routine....i will often find it painful and stiff in the evening. So, I think it needs to be throughout the day....constant movement! Finally, agree with Mark that I can go to bed feeling great....but then stiff and pain in the morning....not just in the back but everywhere! So, unless I am on a run or doing weights....I wander around like an old man....slow, careful, taking my time.

    • @backaware
      @backaware 4 месяца назад

    My physio tells me that people with bad backs are the reason he has a nice house and drives a Porsche. People hurt their backs go for 4-6 appointments and do the exercises he suggests and get better and then they stop and 3/4 months later they are back.

    Important advice for active people. You are going to feel 100% within days but you haven’t healed. Think about a large cut that takes months to mend. Even using Laparoscopic, small holes outside, large cuts inside. 1. WALK…a lot. The more you walk the less chance the nerves can bind to the mesh. 2. Do not carry ANYTHING or OPEN any bottles for at lease 2 months. 3. Lift really light weights after 2 months only. 4. Be a self imposed “active invalid” for six months…you will then heal 100% properly so that you are better than before. 5. Chill. Normal daily stuff like cleaning a car or a pool, sweeping, carrying groceries should be avoided for months: DON’T become one of the 15% that have a recurrence. Take it easy for at least 6 months….when Google or Doctors say that you can exercise in a few weeks they are referring to lifting a remote control or a cheeseburger to the lips. WALK WALK WALK

    I had one of these, apparently it’s a weakness that men have that stems back to where our testicles drop down through the abdominal wall as we develop as foetuses. This tunnel makes us prone to losing our insides down it as we age. I had a simple laparoscopic repair with a mesh inserted to fix the weakness. I was out the hospital within the same day. A little bit uncomfortable for the first two weeks (buy some supportive Y-fronts!) but I made myself go out for very short walks from day 3. After six weeks you can ease back into more resistance based exercises.

    Oh man, feel for you. Got an inguinal hernia last year and had surgery - mesh implant. Was able to get back to physical activity pretty quickly but a full recovery to my previous strength and conditioning has taken about a year. That said, I've taken it slow and careful.

    I have two hernias from doing planking years ago. My gp said just poke them back in rather than get them fixed with mesh and only get something done if it becomes very painful (strangulated). So, its been 20 years, and i still just push them back in with no obvious problems So. Unlike you, i was very lucky.

    Hello Mark, WTF £350!!! I also had inguinal hernia (double) did mine through the NHS. I had a scan first (at my GP surgery, free of charge) I say free of charge, how much NI deductions have I been paying from 40 years of employment. NOT FREE!!! My hernia was protruding out of my belly, the equivalent size of a golf ball. I could still cycle, thank god but no running, jumping etc...and other activities which involved thrusting motions. 😮 Was on waiting list and waited for 9 months for the surgery. 😮 Occasional twinge, to be expected I will be 59 this February.

    Hi Mark yours sounds exactly like mine! This is my second one. Had left side inguinal hernia 11 years ago laparoscopic mesh to fix and healed fast. That one had a bulge! But no pain at all. This one on right side no bulge but as with yours very painful at times. You are pretty much describing mine! Thought I had ripped my abdominal muscles! Had a £130! Ultrasound and have 5mm tear. Booked in for surgery in August. I did Hyrox in London just after I did mine, (possibly deadlifting heavy)Struggled to run leading up to the race but managed to get round. Last 2 laps I was doubled over though! My wife and mixed doubles partner pretty much dragged what now looked like an 80 year old man over the finish line! 😂 I have had to change my training up a bit. Managing ergs and more upper body stuff. I hope you are managing to train too. All the very best getting it sorted!

    I have a few different hernias. Never had surgery, I just work hard to keep my abs strong and it works for me. I have belly button, inguinal and a couple of other small ones. They usually only hurt when I’ve run for a long time. When I did the inguinal it was on the leg press at the gym. It felt like a searing pain or like a red hot poker had been thrust into my groin. Oh, it’s IN GWINAL. 😂 Glad you are ok 👍

    I've had two ingoonal ingheenal innuendo whatever it is I could never pronounce it either, one in my 30s that used to spill into my nuts, was a great party trick at the end. Went skiing with it and finally fixed via keyhole with a patch. Month or so later I was back to cycling etc. Then had another on the other side late 40s, this one hurt more and never got as bad as the first. This one was fixed by usual cut you open poke it in and sew you back up. This one took more recovery mainly around the dirty great hole they cut but either way was back to normal in 1-2 months. All the best 😁
