Welcome to my channel dedicated to astronomy & photography of the night. I do my best to give hints & tips on photographing the night sky, how to plan Milky Way landscapes, spectacular moonrises & moonsets + anything else loosely related to the subject. I also do reviews on some of the gear that I use.
The Geminid Meteor Shower 2024
The Geminid Meteor Shower 2024 peaks from December 14th-15th,
The best time to look is in the early hours of both dates, though this year's shower will be badly hampered by a virtually full moon.

Glastonbury Tor Midnight Star Trail
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.Месяц назад
I visited Glastonbury Tor in Somerset to see if I could capture a star trail image over the famous ruins on top of the Tor. It was my very first visit to Glastonbury, and I arrived quite late & had to make the trip up in the dark without a practice run in daylight, which I would normally strongly advise!
I Photographed Comet Atlas Again!
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.Месяц назад
I managed to get a better shot of Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS on Thursday October 17th from just up the prom from Blackpool. Cloud and a bright full moon, however, hampered our ability to see the comet with the naked eye. Find out more here www.skyatnightmagazine.com/advice/comet-c-2023-a3-tsuchinshan-atlas-october-2024
I Photographed Comet Atlas! ☄️
Просмотров 13 тыс.2 месяца назад
I managed to get my first picture of Comet A3 Tsuchinshan from Blackpool UK, although it was quite a blurry affair due to the stormy weather conditions. This week is a great chance to see the comet after sunset out to the west. Keep following my channel for updates on the comet, and much more! On Thursday evening of October 10th 2024 a massive CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) which had left the sun days earlier, slammed into the earth's magnetic field, causing an auroral display that could be seen at much lower latitudes than normal. #auroraborealis

Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas is making it's closest pass (perhelion) to our sun on September 27th 2024. When it comes around the other side, it may become visible to the naked eye from around October 10th onwards towards the west, after sunset. Here is a guide on how to spot it ras.ac.uk/news-and-press/news/comet-a3-how-and-when-see-tsuchinshan-atlas

thanks Stephen for another great video all the best 🎄🦌☃️🎅❄️🎁
Great live Stephen glad you enjoyed your Bass ☺️, we do have some lovely people on here, always like to be involved with the quiz, but not good at answering correctly lol 😆. Got two this week right. Hope you have a fab Christmas, take care bye for now 😊xx
Thanks for the live Stephen, really good, to you and everyone, have a merry Christmas. Cheers, 🥳🥳🎅🎅
Awesome image!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you for the info I will be out on both nights 🌙
Very nice but make a live with Geminid meteor shower
Great update starman thanks
Thanks Stephen, very interesting video 👍
I can speak from experience that it is definitely worth observing the Geminids, even with a full Moon in the sky. You will see fewer meteors than usual but the shower is so active that you will definitely see some over the course of the night. Ensure that the Moon is outside your field of view and you will see several every hour. Clear skies everyone! 😃
Thanks Steve.
Hi Stephen. I've never had much luck weather wise with this meteor shower but I did see a few bright fireballs a few years back. The last time I saw the Perseids was in 2022, which was also during the full moon and I did actually see quite a number of meteors over a two hour period ( I would have seen more but fell asleep for about twenty minutes in the chair I was sitting in ) To be fair the moon was very low down and almost opposite to the radiant, with this year's Geminids, the moon is going to be a lot nearer to the radiant. I will still have a look though if the weather is ok, bright fireballs can be amazing, especially if they leave a trail.
Hi Stephen. Great photo.. What telescope did you use to photograph that?
Hi Ian. I didn't use a telescope, I used a 300mm lens. You can see the video from a couple of years ago.
Hi Stephen. Monday looks more encouraging for a bit of stargazing,
Nice on, Steve. Last year’s was amazing, although unfortunately it looks like we’ll be battling clouds as well as the moon this year. Hopefully we’ll get a decent stint, otherwise the Quadrantids in Jan should be better placed!
Brilliant that Stephen, thanks.
Interesting Geminid video. Thank you Stephen.
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi Stephen, a great video. You explain everything so well. Thank you.xxxx
Thanks Jean.
Hi Stephen just caught up. I'm sending this to our Paul again, he's very interested in the meteors, thanks for the information, take care 😊x
😊
Another great starman vid stephen
Hi Stephen. Sorry I missed your live stream . I had a day out with my brother, it was great meeting you and the Blackpool lads at the opening of the Christmas by the sea, I just got back to Berlin tonight, had a good journey back. maybe I will see you again next year. take care and all the best, Mildred. xxx
Forgive me for not being on the live last night, I wasn't too well. Sending support 🙏
Thanks Stephen again enjoyed your knowledge, and had a good laugh with our chat mates on here ,keeps us going these lives, take care see you soon night 😊x
Great live Stephen, thanks for that, again learnt a lot and things coming back to me i knew off the cuff years ago, really getting me interested again, had a good laugh with everyone, brilliant, cheers.
Hi Stephen. My back garden faces due south and apart from the A55 dual carriageway ( Which is hidden by a hedge at the bottom of the garden) it's all open fields so I get a really good view of Orion. Scottish Power switched off the electric supply to my street the other night to do some work and even though the rest of the village remained lit up, it was amazing how much darker the sky looked. Orion was over in the south east at the time. I Really like the picture you took of Orion at Glencoe, it doesn't look too warm though.
We could do with a countrywide power cut, so we can all see the stars just like they did in the olden days. Knowing our weather, it'll probably be cloudy at the time.
I'm not a astronomer but fascinated by the night sky & I regularly walk home from work @ around 3'00 am & the past week the skies have been a heaven ( pardon the pun 😅 ) for stargazing..for the untrained eye I ain't got a clue what I'm looking at apart from dipper...
Thanks Martin. Hopefully you can learn a few more stars from watching my videos.
I'm watching this in the middle of the night Stevie, all this talk of Milky Way & Galaxy is making me hungry. I can't stop thinking about chocolate 😂😂 xx
Thanks Moonage xx
@@moonagedaydream4489 hi moonage hope you're keeping well, no quiz!!!!! Take care 😘 xxx
Hi Hazel, I'm good thank you so much, I hope you are keeping well too. I'll look forward to seeing you in the livestream tonight. Ooh, it would be great if there's no quiz, but knowing Mr C, he will probably have one 😂😂 I know we can all count on you to bring the wine gums, to help us get through it 😂😂 See you at 8pm 😘 xxxx
@@moonagedaydream4489 great there's a quiz moonage, wine gums at the ready 🍬🍬🍬. Not bad here, Ds come down with a cold but he's ok. Thanks. See you later. Xxx 💞🤩⭐🌝
@@moonagedaydream4489 Thanks Moonage xx
Gorgeous picture of the Orion nebula. Well done!
Thanks Wendy.
Hi Stephen, great vlog as always, love your knowledge of our sky thank you 💕
Glad you enjoyed it Hazel.
Fantastic photograph xx
Thanks 🙏
Hi Stephen, a great video giving us great pictures and lots of information about Orion. It was very interesting. Thank you for showing us. Hope your foot is better, see you next time.xxxx
Evening Stephen, the plieades got me into astronomy as a little kid, fascinated me seeing a group of stars. Also Orion, mates used to take the Mick but soon stopped when they saw how into it I was. When we were out they couldn't believe I knew each bright star, I used to say learn the constellations first then you'll know the main stars. Thanks for that Stephen, cheers.
Thanks for watching Steven.
Interesting video about the Orion. Thank you Stephen.
😊
Astrogeezer here Stephen. Took delivery of the See Star S50. So easy to set up and use. I’m in Haskayne near Southport and Bortle 5. I Imaged Horsehead B33, M27 Vulpecula, M45. Even with all the equipment accumulated over 60-70 years, I have never, ever, been able to take such mind-blowing images. All in one evening’s Astrophotography too. Minimal editing using iPad and iPhone editing software. You’ve got to try the system out. About 500 quid and available from all the usual outlets.
Hi Stephen I bought this tracker a couple of months ago but typically not had many opportunities. The last year seems to have been one of the cloudiest that I can remember. Hopefully we'll get some more opportunities over the next few months
Opportunities are very few & far between. Might be better to hop on a plane to Tenerife!
Awww my dear absent minded professor ❤️ I couldn't believe it when you forgot to turn the tracker on, but when you did wow, the images were fantastic. The Moon rising was gorgeous 😘 xx
Thanks Moonage xx
Too cloudy to see owt in Castleford tonight.. nice pics 👍
Brilliant stephen very helpful, as soon as we get a clear sky im out and trying mine out
Love your excitement when it slowly comes into view on your phone 😂 I'm getting a telescope this year for Christmas I can't wait to get into this glorious hobbie, I've had a fascination with the night sky since I was a kid, beauty hidden in plain sight ✨
Stephen, your knees would have thanked you if you had planted the tripod on the picnic table instead of the ground! 🤣 Great id though!
Hi Stephen, that was a nice image of the Pleiades for just a single 30" exposure. Hopefully we'll get some clear nights soon so you can spend longer outside with the tracker.
Thanks Kevin. Yes, hopefully next time I’ll get a better picture. We were unlucky with the clouds.
Sorry, but I had to laugh out loud when you forgot to turn the tracker on. Lovely images and entertaining video, Stephen.
Thanks Leon. Schoolboy error there!
Nice vid Stephen. I started my astro work with an earlier version of the Move Shoot Move tracker in fact recommended by Alyn in a conversation with him. Mine is the laser version which I was not a fan off in any way and being as I live close to a large airport there was no way I could use it from home, however I used it when I travelled out with no problem. I have a story that will have you crying with laughter after such an excursion on Mt Olympus a few years back. One massive issue is also with the polar alignment, I bought a fabulous add on that is mentioned in another comment of a 90 degree adapter that screws onto the optical bit saving your neck, back and knees while aligning, it is not cheap but worth its weight in gold and cuts down on alignment times, plus it can be used on other polar scopes making it nice and versatile. It also has a 2x magnification option (switchable) to help nail the accuracy even more. First light Optics sell one from their website for anyone that may be interested. 🙂
Thanks Rik. The 90° adaptor sounds very useful.
@@starman1969 It is, my knees and back are done for but now I have no need to worry and can set up a lot easier. :-D
Steve, you could have easily edited around your goof of forgetting to turn on the tracker but you left it in… you’re a fun and honest fellow!
I was stargazing at Lealholm on the Yorkshire Moors (between Middlesbrough and Whitby)on Thursday but it was so cold,-2,I couldn't hold my binoculars steady so I mainly did naked eye astronomy.
I prefer naked eye over anything else. Pity it’s so cold though at times.
Hi Stephen, great to see this, the photo was amazing, thank you 😍 x
