Ankle Update | 1 Year Since My Injury
Hi everyone! Today’s video marks 1 year since my break! I can’t believe it's already been a year, time really flew by. I just wanted to make an update for those who were wondering about my recovery and for myself to look back on. And sadly, I could not keep the Moxi Jack 2’s (thinking about special ordering a wide version) but I do have a pair of custom Riedell 336 Boots on the way! Can’t wait to get them and try them out!

I would love to try doing this in my own. I’m so scared of messing up. You make it look too easy!!
Hi! I like your bont videos, thinking about buying a pair! Just wondering if you got the same size in your black bonts as in your last pair? How did you find them? Do you think you would fit a larger insole in them? Thank you!
Hi there! Thank you! Parkstar's are great skates especially if you have wider feet. Yes! Both my grey Parkstar's and these black ones are the same size. I got both of these pairs off the Bont website (grey part were customized with the MyBont design your own and the black pair are the all black vegan Parkstars) which has instructions for how to find your size. I wear a women's size 8-8.5 shoes and my feet measure at 250 cm. I got a size 5.5 for my Parkstars and they fit perfectly! I don't think I would be able to fit a larger insole in them because they are a perfect fit and I don't have much room, but I do have a pair of FP Insoles in them and don't have an issues with those insoles being in there!
@moose Cool! Nice to know! I used their chart (245-246 mm) and it put me in a 5 or 5.5 but I also want to put an FP insole in them. Was thinking about the kingfoam orthotic elite but they look pretty thick. I was thinking I should go for the 5.5 so the boot wont run to small but I do want that snug fit! Well, I guess the only way to know is to try it out your self but it's a hustle to return them. Trying to do all the research I can before ordering them :P :)
Nevermind. I found it lol
I don't think VNLA has a center line. Shit
I'm updating my skates. They are ten year old vanilla freestyles. I originally bought all the parts and drilled it myself with the help of a veteran skater. My new boots show up tomorrow and I kind of forgot how to drill them out. Do you have a video tutorial of complete installation?
Please give us an update on how you are doing, hope all is well with you…
Hi! I will make an update video soon. I've been extremely busy between work and school but will work on an update video on my break!
Hello, and thanks for the review on this boot. Glad to see you’re doing better too ☺️ Are you still enjoying these? I received the vegan white versions as a gift and I love them. I skate on trails, streets and a smooth concrete rink floor, so I put black Sunlites on them. The boot provides an inner arch/inside edge lift too. I still have the Bont Parkstars, but these have support with a little more flexibility for me.
HI! I sadly do not have these anymore. They turned out to be too narrow and a half size too big 😥
You are breaking off the bolts ... I was wondering who will you cut them off. I am sure you can find shorter bolts next time :) They do come in all sizes. Just check any hardware store.
Hi! One of plates came a bit loose in the front after a particularly aggressive derby session on my toe stops. Have any suggestions on how to keep them from coming loose again? I tightened them but tried to keep them flush with my boot. Thanks!
Hello! You can use Blue Loctite on your plate bolts to help keep them in place. Just add a drop to each bolt and tighten down the nuts and you should be good to go! (Please only use Blue 242 Loctite as it is removable when necessary with force.)
@@wheelymoose Thank you so much for the reply! I will try that :)
Hi! Great video, what is the name of the tool you used to tighten the nuts? Is it a hollow socket something? And what size? Thank you!
Thank you! That tool is a socket ratchet and I believe the size I used was 10mm? I'll double check the size of the socket and update it if I was wrong!
Hi Moose, thank you so much for this video🫶🏼 How long is your largest foot in millimeters? I think I’m a size 7 like you but I’m not pretty sure because I’ve never tried Moxi before. I did a profound research online through different sources and found a lot of confusing information about what size I should choose😬 Knowing your measurements would help me have a reference :) Thank you💛
Hello! My largest foot measures at 250mm in length and about 241mm in width. I do have pretty wide feet so the Jacks ended up being too narrow and slightly too long for me in the end. If you have any more questions let me know!
@@wheelymooseThank you very much for your answer! My foot with socks measures exactly the same as yours (25cm / 250 mm) and 9,3 cm/ 93 mm in width. I like to feel a few milimeters of space between my toes and the toe of the boot. In your opinion, should I go for size 7 or 7.5?
@@alexia8996 I think a size 7.5 or even an 8 would be best for you! Moxi updated their size chart after I purchased these. Depending on how much room you like, you might like a size 8 better (listed as being 25.6 in length) instead of a 7.5 (listed as 24.9 in length).
You replaced the red/black ones?
They ended up being a full size too big for me 🥲But these are the perfect fit!!
@6:39 best drop in reaction 🥳I love how you persevere with something (like the off side carving) even though it's not so fun.
Thank you! 🙌
Poor Moose ☹This made me cringe so bad,🙈I would have fainted probably if I was your friend. good lesson: never skate alone
My friend did an amazing job keeping me calm and it was so helpful. I learned after the fact that he had issues coming back to the park for a while but I see him around every so often! Skating alone can be fun, but I always recommend having at least one friend (if not just one other person) at the skatepark with you and do not skate past exhaustion!
✌
(got here from your wheel dyeing video) Ankle injuries are the worst (because of the complexity of the joint). I had a hair fracture on my left ankle after high siding my motorcycle. By the time I took the moon-boot off I couldn't lift (flex) my toes from a neutral 90° ankle position due to atrophy. Yeah it's great that you're doing therapy also. Doing extreme sports is 100° a mental game. Just start skating for fun and give us an update.
Oh no! Sorry to hear about your injury, I hope you are doing better now. Next month is will be two years since the accident so I will be making an update as a lot has changed since then! I will also finally have more time to make videos by then. Skating is a lot of fun and I hope you are enjoying it!
@@wheelymoose awesome news, looking forward to some videos. Today I bought a second hand (unworn) pair of Chaya Karma Pros in Red at half price so yay, my first skates in 20 years. Getting some 65mm 78A wheels for them. 🤗
@@cocobunitacobuni8738 That's awesome! Congrats on the new skates! I've heard great things about those ones so I hope you like them.
They pop nicely, very retro like the skates I had in the 80s
I agree they pop really nicely, and even dirty they look great!
It’s been a few years. How did the paint hold up? Have you done any retouches? This is exactly what I want to do to my mirror ball skates but I’m curious about how the paint will hold up over time.
Hey! Before I sealed the paint I did have to do some retouches as the paint would scratch off on just about anything. Once sealed it didn’t scratch off at all. I assume that if you were to take a bad fall that it could still scratch off the paint through the sealant but I haven’t had that happen yet
This looks easy! The idea sounded intimidating so this was super helpful! Ty 👍
Thank you, this seems less of a liability than the method Bont showed of baking them in the oven 😮
I just ordered my first pair. Hopefully I ordered the right size 🤞🏽
I hope you get back out there! ❤
Thank you! I am trying my best. I am hoping I'll be able to skate more once the weather warms up here! ❤️ Winter has been hard on the ankle
I’m so like your roller skates picture
What type of paint did you use?
Hi! I used black acrylic paint.
You don't get wheel bite with those bolts still having that much left on them? I have to hacksaw mine flush with the nut otherwise there's always wheel bite. Mind you, these are oldschool Galaxy plates which are pretty low to begin with.
I haven't! Then again I don't use any wheels that are taller than 57mm. And since I have added wide trucks to this set-up I haven't had to worry about wheel bite at all
@@wheelymoose That makes sense! My wheels are 60mm speed wheels and regular trucks.
Did you end up mounting these?
Unfortunately no. I had to return them as I found out they are half a size too big for me 😭
@@wheelymoose so you needed a half size bigger in the twos?
@@carolvaughn2862 I actually needed a half-size down on top of needed a wider boot. The Moxi Jack boots are too narrow for my foot and with the Jack 2 being more structured than the Jack 1, I wouldn't be able to break in the size 7 I got without discomfort. I would need to get a 6.5 wide if I got them again.
@@wheelymoose thank you!!! I totally misread your first comment lol
Sweetie let your leg and ankle heal completely before you skate, finish PT take it slow I don't want your hurt again.
Thanks for your concern! I have been working closely with my physical therapist again to make sure I am healed up enough to skate. My bones are all healed up; it's only the soft tissue that isn't quite healed and could take years to be back to normal (if ever). But I have been cleared to skate as long as I am comfortable. I am taking baby steps for sure!
Just ordered some and am excited to skate again. I'm 28 and vividly remember going skating during the weekends as a kid, but had forgotten about it. Last year, we took our students skating as a field trip/reward (middle school teacher) and I had a blast at the rink
That's awesome! I'm glad going to the rink was able to reignite that spark again for you. I hope you enjoy your new skates!
Hi there do you need to add a heel blocks to those plates or are they built into the boot? They're nice looking boots
Hi! I did not add anything to the boot when I mounted the plate. Bont Parkstars come with an internal 23mm heel already built into the boot. The internal heel feels great to me so I didn't feel the need to add a heel block, though some people have if you want a taller heel. Thank you!
If I may, I’d advise to wear a dust mask when drilling fibre glass and preferably do it in a well ventilated place to prevent inhaling it. It’s not exactly healthy.
Thanks for the tip! I had realized that after I was done drilling and was covered in dust. I will make sure to wear a mask in a ventilated area next time I have to mount Bonts!
@@wheelymoose please be careful 🙏
@@marcodebortoli Thank you Marco! I will be 😊
Hey Moose, glad to see you’re taking care of yourself. Take your time, and do what feels comfortable to you. I do essential drills on the courts and skate on the street. I’m learning a lot (at 53!) just getting out there. I made playlists with my favorite channels and use those as tutorials. I still have my Parkstars for outdoor ankle support and a pair of Chaya Melrose skates with the Reactor Fuse plates. Recently ordered a pair of Chuffed skates, so I’m anxious to see how those feel outdoors too. Hang in there, and enjoy your new skates! 😉
Thank you Jeanine! I am for sure taking it slow and trying to build those muscles back up so I don't reinjure myself in any way. That's awesome to hear you are learning a lot! I have heard some great things about the Chuffed skates so I hope that you end up loving them. 😁 Can't wait to get out there on my new skates soon!
Hi Moose, hope you’re doing well with your ankle. Just some quick feedback on the Chuffed skates. I absolutely love and recommend them. Very comfortable boot, good support and easier for longer skate time. I did change the wheels and cushions for my trail rides. I’m getting another pair (boots only for a custom plate mount) to change up with.
@@jeaninejulian2596 Hi Jeanine! I'm doing okay. Been having some issues with stiffness and pain due to weather changes but it's getting better. I'm glad to hear that you love your Chuffed skates! I have been curious about those skates so it's great to hear that they are so comfortable. I would definitely try a pair if I got the chance! Thanks for the feedback on them!
what happened to the Jacks?
They were too narrow for my feet so I had to return them
If you skate in the park then the suede is better for you but there is nothing like the 336. The quality is just amazing and the color lab on the Riedell skates are worth it because you can literally get it to look like anything you want (pictures and designs) rather than just a color change.
I actually bought a pair of 336s and I agree they are amazing! The quality of the boots are fantastic
@@wheelymoose id love to see a video comparing the jack 2 and the 336!
@@carolvaughn2862 Sadly I no longer have the Jack 2's but I can ask to borrow my friends to make that video!
@@wheelymoose that'd be great!!! I'm really considering the 336. I have jack1s right now and am unsure if jack2 or 336 would be right for me!
@@carolvaughn2862 The 336 is a fantastic boot but I can see why you would be curious about the Jack 2 as well. I'll definitely work on making that video for you since I know a lot of people want to know the differences as well!
Could you tell us about your skating skill level on day 1?
Of course! So before I tried park skating I worked on the basics of skating for about 6 months. I made sure I could stop, go forwards and backwards, transition, and knew how to fall before I got into the park. I wanted to make sure that I felt comfortable on my skates with some speed before I started park skating. I also used to skate inline as a child and have a background in dance. I will say that my background in both made me more comfortable on the ramp because my balance off skates is pretty good. I think it also helped my progression because I was not scared to throw my body around.
@@wheelymoose Thanks. I've been street skating for a couple years and have only gone to the skate park once. My first day looked sort of like yours so I was curious if our progression may be similar. We will see!
@@loraefernandis2663 No problem! I'm sure with your background in street skating you will progress pretty fast. Just remember to have fun!
Thank you for sharing. After fracture in ankle and broken knee in early March skating... I'm getting back on and feeling like I'm starting at square one. Physically okay to go... but what gets in the way is the thoughts in the head... facing the fears of another possible accident... my dad says he's "terrified" for me skating, but I think that's a bit dramatic. Just need to get back on the "horse"... um skates.... and rebuild the muscles. I understand the panic... but it does get better. Just baby steps. You go girl!!! Again... thank you for sharing your 1st time back.
Thank you!! And I agree that the fear of falling and getting injured again is the hardest thing to get over. My mother felt the same way after my injury so it makes sense that your father would feel scared about having you skate again. Its great to hear that you are also back to skating! And I agree, baby steps is the way to go (even if it feels like you are not progressing for a while). Its better to go slow and build your strength back up than overdue it and get injured again. Thank you for watching!
I made a similar comment in a past video suggesting rollerblading, and you mentioned it was something you were already planning. Just wondering if you had a chance to roll around in a pair. For me, blading is far more fun and safe outdoors and in skateparks. The boots can be super supportive and there are so many choices for aftermarket, heat-moldable liners to get that perfect custom fit. That said, I recently converted Riedell 220 ice skates into quads with Avenger plates. I might causally roll around outside, but I'll mostly be quad skating in rinks which is where I think they really shine. Apparently the same model boots for ice have slightly stiffer counters, which is fine by me because I was anxious about twisting my ankles. I have no idea how jam skaters do it on Godfathers with the top completely unlaced and rolled down. Nice to hear you're slowly on the mend. Thanks for sharing your recovery and insights. 💜
Yes I remember your comment! Sadly I haven't gotten a chance to buy a pair but I did try out a friend's one day and definitely plan on getting a pair myself here soon. They definitely felt like they would be better for the parks because of the amount of hard plastic. It's definitely my next investment. That's awesome to hear you got a pair of 220's! Those are excellent quad boots and should last a long time! Great choice for rink skating or even casual quad skating. Thank you! And thank you for watching! ☺️
I am glad you are healing and taking your time w/ skating! I sprained my ankle really badly 5 years ago (nothing like your intensity of injury) and it took me 6 months to really be ok in like going out (heeled shoes) or going on long walks. It was wild how long it all took even w/ PT. yeah it is a process for sure...so take your time....protect that ankle...no rush
Thank you! Yeah any muscle or soft tissue damage can take forever to heal and that's what is making it so hard for me. I'm glad to hear that you healed up from your sprain! Those can take forever to properly heal. I'm definitely taking it slow and I hope I can be back to skating daily within the next year or so!
What is the main intention for this boot since it is more flexible in the boot neck ? Dance skating ?
I would say either dance skating, just cruising around, or trail skating would be the best uses for this boot. Basically anything that won't cause a lot of impact on the ankles (i.e. not the best for park skating)
Wow you did a great job! 😍 Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! ☺️ And thank you for watching!
Thank youuu soo much for your video!!
Of course! Thank you for watching! ☺️
I love my avanti mags. I have them mounted on my jack 1.

Grate content!
Thank you so much!! ☺️
I’ve seen your past videos with your Bont parkstar’s, do you feel as though they don’t offer you enough ankle support? I hear people rave about them all the time and I’m curious to hear your thoughts :)
Thank you for watching!! I do feel the Bont Parkstars offer a good amount of ankle support and the strap does offer a bit more that can be added. It's not too much support either in that it still has some give when you bend. They also fit amazingly on my wide foot. I absolutely adore my Bonts! ☺️ I would recommend them to anyone looking for a park/street set up. I feel like they are a great overall skate! I'm just seeing if there is a better option for me personally and my ankle issues, otherwise I am happy with my Parkstars. If you have any specific questions, let me know! ☺️
@@wheelymoose thank you so much for responding and giving me your input on the bonts ☺️ I’m highly considering getting some but waiting till I can hopefully try them on in person as I’ve heard from multiple people say their sizing is really weird lol. @@marisolbautista3328 Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that! Depending on how severe your break was and if you are getting the hardware taken out at some point both the Bonts and the Jacks offer good support for that ankle! Do you mind if I ask how bad it was?
How did this setup work? I’m currently removing my Bont Tracer plates and installing the same Avanti plates- and wide trucks- XOXO’s
This set up turned out great! I haven't had any issues with the plates and trucks since I mounted them. The XOXO trucks feel really sturdy with this plate which is awesome. They also do not feel extremely heavy after the full build is complete which was a big plus for me!

Hi there! I'm not sure you're still monitoring comments on this video, but I was about to do this exact project on my MLRs after watching this video and I realized - how did you paint the arch section above the plate? Thanks!
Hey! I just took the flat brush that I used in the video, gathered some paint on it and just tried my best to paint the sections that I could see around my plate. It can be a little messy if you leave the plate on. Just be warned that you will probably get some paint on the plate itself but that can be wiped off or chipped off after drying! You can do the same thing when sealing. Just wrap the plate up in a plastic bag and spray between the plate and the boot a few times! Let me know if this answered your question!
