Great informative video! I’ve watched what seems like dozens of these with the hope of being able to get my old cuckoo back up and running again and your video is the best. Loved being able to see the process of new bushings getting installed. I had mine apart to re-oil but didn’t have to courage to completely disassemble the movement to clean properly like you did. I think if I video the process I’d be able to at least go back and review if I get confused on something. I got mine to the point where it’ll continue to run only if I add another 10oz weight to the time chain weight ….lol….I’m sure that will ultimately create additional wear and tear. I suspect it’s just dirty yet though it was professionally cleaned and oiled 30 years ago….it ran just fine for many years afterwards. Thanks again for the informative video.

Hey Chris, Jeff here with The Clock and Watch Store here in Michigan, just wanted to say thank you! I normally stay in my lane with antique movements and the new stuff has always been a little bit of the unknown. The Hermle service manual is good for some but nothing works better for me than a "hands on visual tutorial" and setting up the 451 series movement was a breeze after seeing what happens to the hammers when a movement is properly aligned!

There is no way I am taking it apart! My middle weight gets stuck, and the clock stops. It's only three years old. It's a Howard Miller my husband got for me for Christmas. I guess calling a clock repairman is better for me. I can't even imagine doing this. Thanks so much, but I'll have to pass. Good luck to the rest of you!!

Hi Chris, I have a Verichron wind up wall clock that is about 35-40 years old. It chimes the wrong amount at each hour. I tried moving the hour hand to the proper time but the next hour it may be anything. sometimes it chimes 4 and the next hour it may chime 7 times. HELP! and thanks.

How to set my clock one hour back

Thank you so very much for making this video. RUclips has hundreds of videos on lawn mowers and plumbing, but there are far fewer experts in mechanical clock repair (and even fewer willing to share their knowledge. I’ve had an 8 day Cuckoo in my pediatric dental office that I bought fifteen years ago. The little patients love it! Recently it began to stop and I assumed it was a staff member walking into the pendulum (which happens on occasion), but when I was the last one out on Saturday, and it was stopped Monday morning I knew it was something else. I made a tabletop jig so it could run from my home tabletop, and spent the last two hours frustrated. It did seem to be stopping close to the hour, actually just before. Not every hour, just some. After watching your video, and playing around with the music box, I realized it was far too difficult to actuate, because the pin was kind of stuck in the drop hole. This difficulty in actuating was most likely causing the clock to stop. I couldn’t figure out for the life of me why out of nowhere my music box would need to be repaired. I was ready to remove the music box portion from the clock and start making adjustments as shown in your video before bringing it to a pro. It was my “Hail Mary”, cause I love the challenge of repair, and had to give it a shot! Then on the fourth time through your video, it hit me…… That little plastic tube……I wonder if it was worn. Sure enough after breaking out magnifiers, I realized the end was worn down. I got out some tweezers and pulled it out about 1/8 of an inch. Now the song didn’t complete playing. Wow. Didn’t know that plastic tube had such an affect. So if you’re still reading, I pushed and pulled on that little tube, extending it about 1mm past where it was. Now the actuating lever on the music box depressed very easily, as the pin was now centered in the drop hole. I’m in the process of letting it run for a few hours, but it’s basically fixed- and completely thanks to you. So thank you so very much again for sharing your knowledge. It is because of your willingness to share that I was able to repair the clock myself so thank you so much again!

hi Chris. I think the bellows arm gets stuck. the one on the left looking at it from the rear. when it's time to chime it stays stationary. when I touch it with my screw driver it works as it should. it's not touching the other arm, just not working like it should.

Hey there Chris. Thank you for the informative video. I have an old black forest cuckoo clock and the music box is to play both on the 1/2 hour and full hour. It might need to be adjusted again because it works when it feels like... Sometimes fine and some times it does not. I was going to try the above adjustments but noticed excessive play on the fly lead screw which i guess i can adjust, but also my little plastic gear that rides against it has a crack in it that would probably allow it to spread some and thus change its motion. Is there a place to get one, or do i need a new movement all together? Thank you.

Hi Chris, I need some help. I just bought a clock in Germany and it wasn't playing music. Found the little spring was off. Put it on, plays music but it seems to play over and over at about 20 past the hour. How do I fix that?

Hello, I have a question. I have a movement like the one in this video. The problem I have with it is that it does not do the 1/4 hour chimes. What it does do is that on the first hour it chimes the first 1/4 chime. the second hour it does the 1/2 hour chime. on the 3rd hour it does the 3/4 hour chime. on the 4th hour it does the hour chimes with the correct strikes for that hour. Do you know what causes this problem? thanks

Hi, inherited my grandparents Black Forest clock. It works somewhat, but I note there are 4 holes for 1 chain. I placed the chain back onto the music box gear but it appears there’s another gear for outside movement of a wooden dear. What order would I place the chain on the gears?

Is there a way to adjust how fast the music box plays the melody? I cleaned/dusted a clock without removing anything from the case, and now the music box is playing at roughly twice the speed that it was prior to the cleaning, even though the clock itself is working just fine and I have not touched nor changed anything (to mu knowledge). I have almost the exact same clock. My parents received it as a wedding gift in the early 1980s. The clock will run and strike for a while, then randomly stop working. I'm afraid that the small motor that runs the strike operation is going bad. Do you know if there are replacements for the motor available?

I recently bought a Schmekenbelcher cuckoo clock, manufactured in 1967. I oiled the gear pivots and it stopped working. I worked on it and now it's working fine - However, now the music box plays at roughly twice the speed it did previously. Is there a way to adjust the speed at which the music box plays? Thanks -

This is excellent. I'll be needing to do this on my grandparents' old Bentima, with a Perivale movement. The Westminster chime sequence is all incorrect. Will this video apply to mine too, taking into account the different design? Thank you.

Love this, love the way this works. Explaining everything nicely, thanks so much. Wondering on mine, as far as hours go, everything works well until the 9oclock strike. It repeats 8 oclock. Then for 10 it strikes 9oclock. This is the issue. After this for 11 oclock it works fine again, business as usual. Dont get why there is this issue on only these hours. Id love to know why if the explanation is easy enough or am i just screwed. It seems like it should be simple, but what do i know. lol Again this was, for me anyway, very fun to watch. The mechanics of these movements are wonderful. I like to watch mine, it is mesmerizing.

Just use a tapered reamer an clamp a strip of hardened tool steel at the extent of the wear, quicker, easier an more precice

Thank you, Chris, some years ago I had a 3 barrel chime clock and all its attachments Holus-bolus piled on my work table. So (without access to Chris's clock repair extra special directions) I began to reassemble each component in its sequential manner, finishing with the necessarily accurate escapement setting, then all I had to deal with was the chime and strike accurate settings. Not overlooking my trial and error method, along with the disassembly & reassembly a number of times, while importantly, if I began to get stressed, I would up and leave my work table and give my mind a rest. Time was not important as it was my own Winchester chime and strike clock, this occurred at my age at that time of my life, aged around 66 years & that was ten years ago, I am now aged 76. Yes, I finally had that old clock up and performing its strike and chime in its accurate restoration. I was impressed by your assembly work, then your obvious years of experience has served you rather well. Thank you for transferring your skills through your videos on your RUclips site. Old William.
