    Chris: I've been struggling to get my chimes and strike working since lubricating at Christmas. When reviewing your video I noticed your "4/4" wheel was mounted closer to the shaft end than I had mine and when I looked more carefully, I noticed the "two" hook levers were being lifted by the 4/4 wheels cam. I moved my 4/4 wheel outwards about .02 inches and everything is fine. 😊 Thanks for your wonderful video but you may want to add a warning comment!

    Merry Christmas!
    After inheriting a Westminster chime wall clock (containing a 72 Hermle Franz 351-020 45CM) from a family member who entered assisted living in the fall, I have been attempting to get the "dead" clock running. The initial problem is that the pendulum refused to keep going. Turns out it was out of beat but the beat could not be corrected just by cleaning and oiling the pivot holes - which I did prior to Thanksgiving - in part because the clock oil that spouse and I inherited with the clock was as old as the clock (50 years!). I bought the Horace brand clock oil and took another whack at it on Christmas Eve, expecting no better result than before but instead got something of a Christmas miracle. Now the clock is keeping perfect time, just in time for my goal of getting it working by Christmas so I can show my family member a video of her beloved clock running for the first time in about six years. However, there is ONE issue remaining and that is that the chiming and the striking are jumbled together. The clock chimes as many times as it strikes and some of the chimes sound a bit sloppy (hesitating).
    Question: Is this (video) the main approach to troubleshooting the problem or is there something else I should try first? For example, I read elsewhere that there is a bushing inside the minute hand that may need to be adjusted but that was in reference to a grandfather clock. (Not sure if the same applies to this movement?) I am about to shoot a short video of the clock running to share with my family member but I'd like to be able to report that her beloved clock is 100% - and right now it's not because the chimes and strikes are jumbled up.
    As others have said, thank you for an excellent contribution to RUclips. Appreciate any tips!

    Your video is a great learning tool. My grandfather clock is a Danekar. It has given me trouble for the past 25 years since my marriage to my wife Martha. It is her late daughter's clock that I more or less inherited. Before I began tinkering with this clock, my wife's father and his father were always trying to correct something with this fine machine. My wife's father Joe actually built a wooden case for the entire movement so it could be easily and safely transported to clock smiths for repair. Since I took over the maintenance of this clock it has always been 2 hours slow. I could adjust the pendulum up or down until the cows come home and the time never is accurate. The beat of the clock is correct and the pendulum swings freely and is actually on beat with a musical metronome. Still the time is never correct. I have almost given up on this particular dilemma. Lately, the chiming mechanism has stopped working. This is something I really would like to repair. Every You Tube video on this repair looks different from the mechanism in this clock. Prior, the Westminster chimes would correctly function on 3,6,9, and 12. The hourly strike would be somewhat functional as well. However, the hourly strike would sometimes hit 25 or 30 times before it stopped. I can easily observe this malfunction and have gotten the hourly strike to be accurate. The problem again, and my main concern, is that the 3,6,9, and 12 chimes don't even activate at all. From observation, there is no on or off switch to stop the chiming as there is on most clocks. Short of hiring a clock smith to come out to the house, is there something that jumps out at you that could be stopping this beautiful chiming mechanism from working? A response would be appreciated more than you can imagine. Other clock smiths on You Tube have not bothered to respond to my much-needed expertise of grandfather clocks. Thank You, Edmund Lubowiecki...

    I followed you, all seemed good and logical until 15:15. I guessed 12 O'clock slot but you put it to 11 O'clock cam lobe. Why? I suppose later in this video it will be answered so I'm keeping watching. I deduce that in this position it just finished striking 11 and is setting up the rack for 12 . This video taught me a ton! I have a Kieninger RWS and this front mech looks almost identical. Go figger! As I recall it has spring return not the weight drop method. Thanks!

    Appreciate this; it helped me get a 451-053 back in working order after complete disassembly and cleaning (previous owner had oiled the gears and everything was gummed up after sitting idle for years). What I ran into was an issue where the gathering pallet as you called it in 5:38 was not able to be separated from its shaft, so was left with trial-and-error assembly of the unit the star wheel, gathering pallet, and the warning wheel were all oriented correctly. Compared to the quarter hour side, which made use of set screws, the hour striker side caused quite a conundrum where I thought I had it right but soon noticed an issue where the last count for an hour was being cut off. One more tooth offset of the warning wheel's pinion later, and it was back to working correctly. The difficulty of maintaining the tooth positions when putting the clock mechanism together makes me wonder why the gathering pallet wasn't secured with set screws in the design to allow both sides to be tuned after final assembly.
    Thanks again for your excellent video and explanation of the mechanism

    • @Chrisclockrepair
      @Chrisclockrepair  2 года назад

      Hi Phil. Thanks for the kind words. The positioning of the gathering pallet will be the same procedure as shown in this video. You want to advance the strike train until the hammers "drop" (this is after the star wheel lifts the hammer and completes its cycle) and then continue to move the train until the warning wheel pin is at top dead center. Then lock the train from moving by putting a clothing pin on the fly. Then press on the gathering pallet such that the arm that gathers up the rack is in its lowest position. The gathering pallet has a contour with high and low spots. Make sure the arm is resting on the lowest spot in this position. Hope that clears it up for you.

    Thank you Chris for that detailed look at putting together the front works of that movement. I have a Hermle 051-050H movement and had a problem with the chime and strike. The small lever which controls correcting the strike would get “hung up” on the stop cam preventing it from spinning. I took that lever off and the clock runs perfectly now. What could be the problem ?

    • @Chrisclockrepair
      @Chrisclockrepair  2 года назад

      Do you mean 1051-050H?
      I would check to ensure the lever is not rubbing on the lever behind it, the cam is not rubbing on the movement plate, check for burrs or wear on the lever tip and the cam surface.
      Where on the stop cam is it stopping? And does it stop on every quarter hour? Is it always the same spot?

    Hey Chris - I have a Hermle black forest and I noticed in your video you're able to easily push on the weight pulley to move the train of wheels for the chimes, however on mine it takes considerable force. With the weights on I need to pull significantly on them for the chime to run. Is this indicative of needing oil or (worse) a full rebuild?

    Hi Chris. Your videos are terrific and easy to follow. I’ve watched your assemble and adjust the rack and snail video several times to try diagnose my chime/strike issue. I have a Sligh grandfather clock with a Kieninger K series triple chime movement. It stopped chiming and striking. I’ve taken the dial off so I could see what’s happening. I’ve oiled the pivots I can get to with Horace Whitlocks clock oil. It now chimes on the first, second, and third quarter hours. On the hour, the drop levers raise, the chime governor spins a little, the levers drop, and then nothing. Governor doesn’t spin unless I move it but hand, then the cycle completes. Once this stop occurs, chiming and striking are random and infrequent. This 3 quarters chiming and then stopping on the hour is repeatable. Clock was serviced in a local shop about 6 years ago and ran fine. Someone may have tried to silence the chime while in progress once so as to not wake a child. Any suggestions? We don’t want to spend more $$$ for another repair so I’m trying to RUclips certify my way through this.
    Thank you for any suggestions.

      A little more info…at the beginning of the hour chime cycle, the drop levers raise and the warning wheel rotates a little, but not enough for the stop pin to hit the detent. When the levers drop, nothing else happens. In all other chime cycles, the warning wheel rotates until the stop pin hits the detent. In that position, when the levels drop the chiming proceeds with the warning wheel and governor rotating as they should. I can’t see what causes the warning wheel stop pin to not make it to the detent. The first three quarters the warning wheel stop pin moves from top dead center to about the six o’clock position. On the hour it stops around the eight o’clock position. Thank you.

    • @Chrisclockrepair
      @Chrisclockrepair  2 месяца назад

      Okay, I understand what you are dealing with. What you want to check during the warning process (when the pin is approaching the detent) observe the chime hammers and the music roll. If the music roll is too far forward and begins to try to life the hammers during warning, you will not have enough run to lift them when the lever drops. There won't be enough power to start the sequence. So it could be the position of the music roll is off or you need to lubricate the music roll and the hammer assembly rod. If these are not the issue then it may simply be that you have worn pivot holes and there is simply not enough power to drive the chime sequence. I hope that makes sense to you.

    Hi Chris. Been watching your video as I have a question about a triple chime table clock with Hermle 050 movement. The level that operates the triple chime, when you adjust sometimes you can feel the steps when adjusting and other times especially when you lift the lever up it feels loose and floppy and then sometimes moving down to Westminster chime there's resistance.
    I noticed that you get none of this when you lift the hammers up and adjust, the lever feels normal. I took the movement out and the issue is with the first hammer, the one towards the dial, it ocassionally stops the music wheel to move to the left and when you lift this one hammer it releases.
    I have an issue on another movment. IS this normal?

    Hi Chris,
    Agree with everyone that this is a great video!
    Hoping you can help me trouble shoot a problem I'm having on my Ridgeway grandfather clock movement. When the smaller drop lever drops into the stop cam at the three quarter hour, it drops into the wedge of the stop cam and then it won't chime the three quarter chime. It looks like the drop lever isn't getting lifted high enough out of the wedge to get it to chime at the three quarter hour. As the clock keeps ticking and moves on to the hour chime sequence, the drop lever will lift correctly and strike, but at that point it's striking the prior three quarter chime sequence and not the hour chime sequence because it didn't strike back at the three quarter hour. Is there something that needs to be realigned to correct the stopping problem at the three quarter hour? Thanks!!!

    • @Chrisclockrepair
      @Chrisclockrepair  2 месяца назад

      It sounds like there is "not enough run" on the warning wheel and so when it warns, the cam only moves a small amount and thus drops back into the stop cam. Then when it gets to the hour, the additional run allows it to go. It sounds like you need to reposition the cams relative to the warning wheel (so that the warning pin is at top dead center) when the levers are in the stop cam.

(bought a new movement) It works but sometimes the hour strike hangs up and some hours i get no chime, i can get it to chime if i pull a little pressure on the strike weight it will go, other times it seems to loose an hour. It could be working going along and i will hear a weird “pop” noise during the chime then I may lose an hour for the strike. (Ie let’s say it’s 6 pm on the clock has been right on time all along them it strikes 5 times. I checked the snail and seems like the rack is falling right where it needs to be for the hour. I’m just at a loss and the clock company in Mass i ordered it from has not given me any help and i don’t really have a local clock repair person to look at it. Thanks

    • @Chrisclockrepair
      @Chrisclockrepair  2 года назад

      Thank you. Allright. Here are some things to check.
      1. Rack is dropping correctly on the snail in right position. When the hour lift has just passed, the rack should drop at the beginning of the next step.
      2. Is it possible that the rack hook can fall behind the snail. Pull snail all the way forward and rack all the way back and check to see if it can get behind there. If yes, bend rack hook so it can’t.
      3. Is the snail changing positions? If you lift the snail as far as it goes and rotate it, can it move to another location on the reverse when next to it? If so, need to ensure this cannot happen.
      4. Is there run on the strike lift. The strike should lock just after the the strike finishes so there is buildup of speed before the first strike. Also put a little grease on the star wheel points of contact.
      5. Is the locking arm (piece that locks on gathering pallet) lifted high enough so that the rack fully drops without catching on the gathering pallet pin. Sometimes this locking arm can come down on the rack before it finishes its fall.
      Thats what i would check. Good luck.

      So things seem a little better, but for some reason the hours of 7-11 the strike “runs out of steam” like it just can keep itself going to strike all 7,8, etc times. Again if i pull a little on the weight i can make it complete the hour strikes. The weird “pop”
      I hear when i do this sounds like it’s skipping on whatever is hanging it up. Star wheel? I may need to adjust the gathering pallet again as after all said and done the warning wheel pin is just off of Top dead by 1/8 or a so turn. I haven’t seen the locking arm falling prematurely, i need to make some sort of timing rack so i can run everything outside the clock structure so i can watch all wheels and pinpoint the hang up. by the way what is a time band? could that be the mainspring for the time that you wind up? this clock has 3 windup points one is the time one i figure is the chimes but what does the 3rd one do? if by chance i may be able to take out the time band and clean it and oil it and reinstall it? or swap it out with one of the other springs? but my guess is it is so old it may be sloppy and not keep good time? thanks

    • @dperry428
      @dperry428 Год назад

      11cm is the length of the pendulum. 200.73 is beat rate, the number of beats per minute the pendulum makes when it is keeping correct time. Useful if you have an electronic clock timer. This model Hermle is sold in a number of pendulum lengths. Each has a different time train gearing setup, particularly the escape wheel tooth number. I've had a number of people refer to the mainspring as a "time band". The three holes wind three springs, one each for the time, chime (quarter hours) and strike (hours). The springs can be taken out without taking the whole thing apart. There is a number on each spring barrel and new springs and barrels can be purchased at clock supply houses. The 3 springs are not interchangeable and are different strengths. You can also replace the entire movement with a new one. They are still made. No cross reference needed. Just buy a Hermle 1051-020 11cm.

      Check merritts. Call and ask. They often have used movements they sell, but you have to call and ask.
