How Sea Lions Catch Salmon
A question that used to bother me a bit, was how do Sea Lions catch fast fish like salmon? Do they have some sort of trick or strategy that helps them? After years of filming Steller Sea Lions in Icy Strait Alaska, I think I have the answer!

Incredible Humpback Whales Feeding! (Veggie Whale part 2)

      They still do, it's just hard to find them in those sizes. I have a buddy, an experienced fisherman, who lost one after three hours of fighting. He's landed fish that were 250lbs+ without too much trouble in 30 mins, but this one never even came towards the surface. He could see it on his fish-finder though, and it was a monster halibut. Longline fishermen get hooks straightened out sometimes too, from fish that were just too powerful to bring up. Some of them just outclass the gear they're trying to catch them with.

  • @bevgordon7619
    @bevgordon7619 2 дня назад

    I wonder how many viewers dropped your video as soon as you told us about catching ‘her’? I almost did but I glimpsed at the first comment which mentioned you released this huge fish. Hopefully the long fight with your hook caught somewhere in its mouth didn’t cause lasting damage. Was it really necessary to do that and traumatize this creature?!

    • @AlaskaWhaleanddronetours
      @AlaskaWhaleanddronetours 2 дня назад

      @@bevgordon7619 interestingly enough my viewers increased after I mentioned that we hooked her. (It’s a female halibut because only the females reach these sizes. Male halibut rarely get over 50lbs.) I believe it is no more immoral for a person to kill and eat a fish than it is for a fish or other creature to kill and eat a fish, and the vast majority of my viewers share this perspective. However, we do have the opportunity to be even better than wild animals, and be able to choose between the fish we catch and decide which ones to eat. This particular fish has far more value alive, breeding and making millions more halibut than it would be dead. The other halibut we caught that day were not so lucky, they were smaller and better table fare so we killed and sent them home with our clients to be eaten. As far as damage, trauma, and lasting injuries for the fish? Lol. We use circle hooks specifically for this reason. They hook into the bony corner of the mouth and secure the fish with minimal chances of tearing, gut-hooking, or gill-ripping. Halibut hooked on a circle hood have a better than 95% survival rate when released, and I guarantee she was just fine. When she got to the surface, she looked relaxed, and that’s how most of these big fish come up. The “big fight” was mostly just her letting her weight and shape in the strong current give the guy something hard to pull up. I’ve seen these fish when they aren’t relaxed, and they are extremely strong and dangerous. They also eat hard, spiny, sharp things on a daily basis. Rockfish, sculpin, whole crabs, etc. Their mouths are built to take damage like what the hooks do, and still keep going. When we released her, she practically shrugged as she casually swam down. Not from exhaustion or anything like that, because she had PLENTY of energy left she didn’t use, but because she wasn’t even bothered by us. That being said, even if it was more traumatic, it still would have been necessary because that’s the way we can catch fish and choose which ones to keep. Or are you a fan of factory trawlers coming in and dragging the ocean floor, indiscriminately killing everything? That’s the alternative, because people are still going to eat fish.
