Axelson lathe setting up with steady rest and 4 jaw chuck
Просмотров 6109 часов назад
My routine for heavy cutting using the 4 jaw chuck and steady rest to prepare the end of the work piece for OD turning. I often use 4 jaw chucks on existing parts for the increase holding power and 3 jaw chucks on new materials for faster work time. Here I am using an 8" vintage Union steel body 4 jaw chuck instead of my usual 8" medium duty 3 jaw chuck.

Lathes, Milling Machines, Woodworking Machines and other belt driven machinery will run smoother on start-up if the belts are rotated if the machine has set unused for any length of time. Moving the belts off where they have received a "set" from the last use. It is beneficial for Reeves drives to park the machine with the pulleys set at the machines middle speed, this keeps the belt from pinch...

Measuring and grinding boring bars for jig boring and milling
Thank you Don. Hope that you are doing well Sir. Happy New Year. 👍🇺🇸👍
Merry Christmas Don. I seen that news article also. I was surprised by the fact that they didn’t have anyone to step in even temporarily, but I guess it makes perfect sense. Not many manual machines left in the industry running, most are in small hobby shops and older guys like us running them. It puts me in a tight spot really, too old to start the journey of CNC and not much in the line of manual opportunities left either. Anyways I sure hope you are doing well up there sir.
I think the best approach in these times is to use machining skills in addition to other skills like a millwright. I have to do a little of everything. Working space here in a wine tourist destination is now $3000 a month for the spot the plastic mold shop was, that is hard for one person to do. Hopefully the economy will pick up, that will help greatly. Happy New Year Jason!
I really like the micro100 boring bars and brazed carbide Tough
It surprises me how tough it is, thanks
Hi Don, happy holidays buddy, thanks for sharing hope ya'll keeping well, best wishes to you and yours Ralfy
Happy new year Ralfy!
After your safety reminder and then seeing all the smoke from cutting oil made me think about putting a small fan close by to blow it away, over time, inhaling that is no doubt a bad thing for sure. I really like that Axleson baby lathe 😁, the head I've no doubt weighs nearly as much as my entire 14x40 Taiwan lathe . I have a few big bars about that same size, hard as all get out, called a heat treating place close by inquiring on the cost to anneal, he laughed at me, apparently not interested in small jobs LOL
I have a good vent fan, I am controlling the toxic stuff like carbide dust pretty well. The Axelson is one of the better old machines but it is slow in operation compared to modern lathes. Stay safe, thanks!
Thanks for the safety reminder!
Hi, thanks for tuning in
Thank You
You're welcome!
OTC Owatonna Tool Company now apparently part of the Bosch umbrella of automotive companies. I have many OTC pullers, pumps and hydraulic tools for doing my industrial service work. Over the years they have been very reliable. I would say worth repairing. OTC had an annoying habit of using odd threads at times that can be problematic. Safety reminders are never out of place. I had a friend of mine get caught up in his sweatshirt and go for a ride through his boring mill, It did not kill him, but he was never really the same after that and finally gave up the machine shop. I find myself remembering that every time I think I need to reach over a moving machine. Micro 100 carbide is some rugged stuff. It's mostly what I use in the portable boring bar which almost never has a proper rigid set up. It lasts much longer in interrupted situations and cutting weld (which is hard on tools) than most other options I find. Cheers to you don and Happy New year
The Micro 100 was used by the screw machine shops in the region here often called Swiss shops. Thanks, looking forward to a new year, this one is worn out!
Stay safe. Nice to be reminded. Good work Don.
Hi, thanks for tuning in stay safe.
Hi Don I saw that on the news, He was really hurt bad. And I am surprised the micro 100 did so good over the holes. Thanks
I think the brand is known best for holding up on interrupted cuts and even bench lathes.
Amen about the safety. For these colder months, I've been using layers of sweatshirts with the sleeves all cut short. I wouldn't go as far as to say it keeps me warm, but it at least prevents me from getting too cold to keep going. Another awesome video :)
I could see how that accident could easily happen. Thanks, Happy New Year
Don, for those odd ball internal threads you need thread express. Google it, its quite interesting.
I know what you mean by always having something to do. I just bought a 6 x 12 Walker Ceramax mag chuck. Nice and clean, surprisingly. But flipping the handle was difficult. It would jam in two places. The shaft for the handle wobbled in the hole in the casting. I took it apart, thinking it would. E filled with a lot of crap as the other chucks always seem to be in the RUclips reverb videos. But it wasn’t. Hardly any lube of any kind either. But the casting was worn there. So tonight I bored the hole to 14mm, which was the outside due of the oillite iron beaded sleeve was from McMastercarr. Saturday I’ve got to bore out the sleeve from .375” to a crazy .4175. Where they came up with that size I can’t imagine. Well, that’s part of the problem, it it would take to long to describe all the rest, but one thing, I’ve got to modify a boring bar for the boring head so that it can cut a bit over an .125 wide circle in the side of the casting around the hole and place another oillite washer there. Oh well. I suppose this isn’t too bad. When it’s cold, other than for the heater, I use a leather thinsulate vest I bought from Cabela almost 40 years ago and which is still in great shape. I hate working with a heavy jacket or coat. My arms feel too restricted.
Your chuck should be like new, I am glad my surface grinder up and going, I want to do more with it and it makes parts look so nice.
I saw that news cast about the guy getting pulled into the lathe, they said he stalled the lathe for awhile…I say B.S. he was very lucky to be alive….thanks for bringing this up Don❤
It may have been a time stood still moment.
Good evening Mr Don….thanks for the great information….Paul in Orlando
Hi!
@@DonDyarprecisionI use your knowledge every day Don, I am progressing a lot with the SB 13”… using the flat belt drive as a clutch, took the used rear axels from my 1999 f 150 ford and gave them a spin …they were hard as Chinese Algebra….some of the finishes I get are mirror like….I have about 30 thou of backlash on cross slide, but have tamed that….and learning how to grind HSS tools is a priority…even made a 1” boring bar for ID threading…so making 1 7/8” 8 tpi for the odd ball spindle size is now possible…Adaptaking is my new nick name…cheers…Paul
Great video..thanks for the heads up. “stay alert stay alive”
Hi, thanks. Lathes are likely the most dangerous machines.
Thankyou for reminding us on safety to not reach over the action.
It seems like coats are the worst for getting tangled up, thanks.
Nice Donnie ! --Doozer
Hi Doozer, thanks!
Hey Don that beeswax potions works pretty good . Thanks for the tip. Cool stuff lol
Hi, thanks for checking it out, very few will try it.
Hey Don I made me up some of that beeswax cutting compound and I’m trying it out on some high hardened P-20 tool steel . Wish me luck
I am playing around with this hardened piece of steel, broke two styles of carbide inserts and only successful with a Micro 100 brazed carbide bit, I will try to do a quick video.
Hey Don We have a big Herbert 47V jig borer we are needing to get rid of, let me know if you know of anyone that might be interested. Merry Christmas! Ross
I will let you know, thanks and merry Christmas
Merry Christmas to you as well Don. The old pictures and ads were great today. They just have a much nicer look to them than todays advertisements. The P-40 with the sentry standing guard is a great photo.
Thanks Warren, the P-40 photo was from Paul Brown
Thanks for sharing the knowledge. And a Very Merry Christmas to you from Liverpool, UK
Hi, thanks from Walla Walla!
Merry Christmas Don.
Thanks Randy!
Hi Don, Merry Christmas to you and a half New Year. You and your wife from Frank over here at Fleco technology Walla Walla Washington
Thanks Frank, you too!
A nice big boring bar with coolant through. That’s just my suggestion. Have to plug a few holes, but that’s easy for you. Back to these old machines. When I look through my old books and catalogs, it’s hard to believe how big, heavy and sophisticated some of these machines were, and they were built in the 1870s!
I like those Pond lathes and boring mills for railroads. There were very old machines still in use up into the 1970s here in small shops related to maintenance for sawmills and mining. I found a machine in Montana called a Lincoln Miller, an early type of milling machine I know very little about it except its mid 1800s and was used in armories. The boring bar with through coolant would be great for a big machine.
Great content as usual. Thank You, Sir.
I have another video coming soon!
Merry Christmas DeeDee….best wishes for the New Year…Paulie Brown…..❤…I finished my Radiation this afternoon…
Great news Paul! I was glad when that was over. Merry Christmas!
Hi Don , Merry Christmas ! Cheers 👍
Merry Christmas to you too!
Hell that’s all I ever use is a four jaw chuck . That’s the way I was taught when I was young
Were any of us ever really young? I hardly remember.
I used the 4 jaw chuck more early on. The 3 jaw chucks were worn out.
Marry Christmas Don you are a wealth of knowledge
Thanks for that!
I don't know about the machine but it's a great video Merry christmas and happy new year
Thanks for tuning in!
Another beautiful machine.
Thanks!
Beautiful piece of American iron! The Gizzmo's and Gagets you've added to it are proof of your great ability to think out of the box. Each one of them invokes more curosity. Plus I am sure it was fun to think them thru and see a great end result. Really appreciate seeing your cleverness, and it helps me with my own ideas as well. I have an old Norton T&C grinder with 5C workhead. About 2-4 times a year it gets my azz out of trouble, or allows me to do a job that my Green-button-pusher competition (with their new Haas machines) don't have a clue how to approach. Merry Christmas, and hope you're gonna shoot off the Cannon at midnight on New Years Eve. lol
Yes! The machine can give you the edge the others can't get. I can only shoot cannons when my wife is not here.
You've got that setup great. Merry Christmas Don!
Thanks for tuning in!
Nice machine, we had a Cincinnati Monoset where I served my time. It was the ducks guts for sharpening end mills.
I would like to try to get a Monoset or the similar P&W later on if I can carve out some room, thanks.
Hello from Aus. Thanks for a look over your subpurb T & C grinder. Your collection of attachments is fantastic. The best to you for Christmas. BC
Thanks, Merry Christmas!
That is a nice setup. Great work mister.

Thanks Mel
That is a very nice machine Don. The other day I was fitting some oil pump gears in a transmission oil pump and the new gears were .0065 thousands too tall, so to the surface grinder with them and ground them down to fit. Without that machine I would have been out of luck for sure. Merry Christmas Don. 👍👍
I often ground gear and bearing spacers for transmissions and motors where the cases were squeezed together from repair, I know I will use it in the future
Wilma is looking stacked in that pic.
Great image from Paul Brown, thanks!
Sunnen is such a great company to do business with. The direct to customer marketing concept makes things so much nicer. Joe Sunnen was a innovative man an in many respects and is well worth reading about.
I made a guy mad about joking "DJ" Sunnen in this video. I read the history of the early "cylinder grinder". The Automotive and Industrial division are separate, using both they always knew what I needed, thanks!
Donny, you should do a 'tour' of your shop shelves. I see a steam engine and a small lathe, be kool to see all you have stashed up and around......Always eager to learn more about Sunnen tools as a amature hone owner/operator. My MBB1600 I picked up last year was just exactly as 'gummy' as you show on yours, plus the pulleys were oxidized. Cleaned, scotch bright-ed, and freed up all piviot points. Works well now. Sunnen prices never fail to provide a maximum dose of sticker shock. Luckily my machine came with 'some' tooling, but many duplicates.
I keep changing things, I will do a look around. The honing machine is my shop secret weapon!
Too bad a guy selling a quarter million buck machine only has a 97.8 rating.
Who Elon?
I don't want to say too much, this area is full of dangerous dishonest people, the only side is your side here, have to be careful.....
Good video
Thanks for the visit, more Sunnen to come.
Brings back memories of my electronics class in 1966. We had to make one of those. We wound our own transformer around hand cut laminated iron core and wound the coil on the vibrating 'pencil'. I think I still have it. We need shop classes like that now.
The schools have pretty much shut down shop classes in my area, very sad.
Happy days Don 🎉 amazing old bit of kit, thanks for sharing
Thanks for tuning in! 👍
