How To Start Soldering, A More Than Basic Guide Part 2: Practice Projects
Congrats. Do you jave a rough breakdown of the most profitable items - obviously it'll be a moxture of bad caps, cables, cleaning to just unrepairable - hopefully you jave enough datapoints to average this out though and get a general overview. Hopefully you'll get a hot air station and take things up a notch. I was surprised you tested the psu with the case removed rather than just probing the output though? The screen ribbon replacement you did in this episode was very good, even if it didn't quite work in the end.
Congrats on completing this series! Been following since month 3 I think. This series has helped me gather some more knowledge on especially the OG xbox consoles. Hope to keep seeing more repairs on this channel in the future :)
great series! thank you for the content and your dedication! hopeful to see more!
Great series! Now we are waiting for Season 2 :)
I can do that snes cpu for you if you feel like sending it to a stranger in NJ. Great videos, keep it up!
I know you said you paid bills with the profit but you should also really look into getting yourself a hot air station. It's a life changer for some connectors and especially removing surface mount caps.
Really enjoyed watching the whole process! I have picked up broken electronics from time to time to fix and sell and have always wondered what it could come out to try and do as a side gig. How did this go from a youtube perspective? How long did it take to shoot/edit videos, and how did this challenge grow your channel and add revenue?
I wish any of it was possible where I live. Ebay is not a thing locally, even if it was a thing, shipment cost would kill any potential interest in the items. Especially if the buyer was from another country in EU. On local sites, nothing older than few years really sells. You can wait months for a buyer. Technically I have access to whole bunch of nations, the territory similar to US but I don't think fixing and selling older hardware is a thing here. At least in my country. I have fixed couple of older 4th and 6th gen computers and listed them. I lowered the price to the point where I will just get what I have spent on the items and the price of new parts that I added (and I got them for real cheap). Still waiting for a buyer. It is not that it is bad price, you can't buy anything cheaper, simply, people don't want old stuff. They rather pay more money and buy something slightly newer.
I know some people are in odd areas where it makes it tough to sell items online and I totally understand. I'm very fortunate to live where I do since I'm so centrally located to everything in the Midwest. Also having the pool of buyers in the US is a pretty large advantage. Hopefully you continue to fix items though, don't get discouraged if items don't sell for a while if that's how it goes in your area. I wish you luck for the future though!
And I reeeeeaaaaally hope there's a season 2 of $0 to $10,000
...we will see. I need a bit of a break for the time being lol.
It was fun to see you though this journey. I hope you continue in 2025.
Thank you! Glad to have the support!
Thank you man! I only came into this series at month 10 i think? but have loved every episode and has been very inspirational to me and will be looking into starting to teach myself alot of this stuff in 2025! Cant wait to see what you have in store for the new year!
No, thank you for watching and commenting! It means a lot to have random people being inspired by something I posted. Thanks for coming along in the journey!
Oh man I got so excited when I saw you posted
LOL! I hope you enjoy!
Final Episode <3<3<3 What a journey, thank you for this 12 Episodes and thank YT to let me find it in germany basicly at the beginning :D Wish you all the best and happy christmas to you and your family (: see you next year!
Thank you, Merry Christmas to you as well! And thanks for coming along on the journey, I couldn't have done it without all of the support!
thanks This Helped Me Alot :)
Glad I could help!
So i did the repair using the part you suggested and now my controller is constantly moving right. any specific solder spot i should check? i completely removed the replacement and re soldered after it was stuck right and still doing again. Thanks!
Was it drifting to the right before doing the fix? If so, I would check the traces going to the POT that moves right and left just to make sure there is nothing there that was damaged first. Small cracks can be hard to see sometimes. If it wasn't drifting to the right before, then it could be a defective new part or it could have some debris on the inside of the POT that is causing it to not center properly. I'd also check the inside of the POT for any defects or debris too and clean and retest again, otherwise you could always put on your old sticks POT and see if that helps too. Hopefully you can get it working again though!
*Can I buy one from you?*
Sorry, but no. I'm flattered people like it that much but it wouldn't survive shipping unfortunately.
If you opened up a gamecube and see that it is disgusting on the inside, start by cleaning it off lol
lol for sure, I had done that in one of my other repair challenge videos. But funny enough the cleanliness level of the inner parts doesn't seem to effect the lid parts too much.
What do i do without a soldering gun😢
You can clean it? But removing items will be difficult without a soldering iron unfortunately.
@ my battery bracket is a little oxidized thats all
You can clean it in place, it may just take a little while longer to do that. But if you're using something that doesn't damage the circuit board like high percentage IPA, then you should be good.
@ sounds good thanks
No problem, hopefully it works for you!
Commenting for the algorithm again as it still didn't show up on my feed. With all those extra units you should break through the target even if it's not within your rules and within the exact timeframe.
Thanks, every little bit helps! I was hoping that would be the case too...
GENTLY remove that ribbon cable
You kind of wiggle it out and it pops loose pretty easy that way.
Hey, I have got an xbox 360 slim model, and the battery packs are quite difficult to pry apart. What's a quick solution to this problem? I also forgot to mention that the middle part on the battery pack almost broke. Update: Hey man, thanks for providing me with everything I need to fix my controller it was nice to see the bright green flash after some time and aggressive mortal combat playing, and thanks again for the video 👍
Glad it helped!
comment lol
I'm dying over this lol.
already got a few videos down brother.
I see that. lol
I like the study you performed
Thank you, hopefully they help people to preserve their screens for a while longer.
I didnt even think the battery covers could come apart.
They are not meant to, that's why its a slow process. But makes it way easier to clean properly when its apart.
Dig the rapture poster bioshock is one of my favorite games
Same, it's one of my favorites too. It's in my top 10.
Never thought about that trick the end it would make me to nervous lol but awesome idea
It works, you just need to be very careful.
I did mine and still no power? Any ideas?
Could be the power supply, if you have a second power supply I’d try that first. Also check to make sure the fuse didn’t blow again after install. If it did then there has to be another issue with how the power is being fed into the system.
comment to comment
Lol.
Just found your channel and im going to try to watch every video and comment on each!
Thanks for the help! I hope you enjoy!
@gamejaeger gotta help other youtubers for sure.
Lol, Thanks I appreciate it!
Was hoping these were Hall effect. Still worth it though.
No they aren’t. That brings up another question but I’m pretty sure you can’t use Hall effect sticks in original Xbox controllers without some additional modifications though. Don’t quote me but I didn’t think they were compatible with the older controllers.
@gamejaeger the hall effect units would in fact require additional logic to process, but that could be small enough to be inserted with on board ASIC piggybacking in the unit, I assume. It's a lot to hope for, maybe too much.
Yeah it would require some doing I’m sure. Maybe a daughter board to hold the extras?
if that's the worst you've seen, than you haven't been repairing too many cartridges.
Lol. I haven’t seen many really bad carts similar to this one, so it’s a pretty true statement so far. Mostly I just see dirty pins and trace or battery repairs. But I’m not sure where people find the utterly destroyed carts I’ve seen in a few other videos. I’d love to find out though, so if you have any leads let me know! Lol
@@gamejaeger I thought I had replied. Maybe I'm getting tired. I've been finding them on e-bay included with a bunch of other things. Ironically the hardest repairs were the ones that actually had the best appearances.
I can imagine, you never know what’s inside of those things sometimes lol.
I wonder if injecting green resin might work... possibly without dismantling. hmm.
Maybe? You’ll probably still have to take them out of the main base and lay them flat then inject in some green resin. I could see that working though, good idea!
Mine ever since arriving is just poor poor contact that toughest sweet spot on one battery.. no corrosion it's damning me >.<
Maybe bend one of the battery terminals so it can contact better? Or find some replacements online?
Could I clean the acid with out pulling it apart because I don’t want to break it
You might be able to if you can get down to the contacts with something long enough and strong enough to scrub them clean. Maybe make a tool with an ice pick or a chopstick? Not sure what would work honestly but you could if the corrosion isn’t that bad.
I remember being one of the first 5 subscribers, amazing to see what a community you've built in such a short time!
Thank you for the support! I hope to have a few more as time goes on too!
You need just under a $1k sales to reach the goal, and Christmas is coming which hopefully gives a little sales boost.
Here’s hoping!
What's your go-to for testing 360 controllers? I test all other PlayStation and Xbox controllers by plugging them into a computer, but the 360 controllers don't work this way unless you have the correct wireless dongle.
I typically play a few rounds of halo odst firefight mode lol. It’s easy to load up and you can have fun in the process!
I know it might be obvious but I’ve had the same issue with a snes and it was just the AV hookup. Especially if you’re using third party hook up’s (xyab is what I had the issue with)
I may try to swap the cord but I’m using an original cord that I’ve been using for testing for a very long time. Good thought though. I may have to rule it out just in case.
@ now that I’m thinking about it, the issue was in the RCA’s on mine. If you’re using oem then I dk but I was thinking it’s possibly an easy fix to swap
Very true. It at least eliminates a possible failure point.
I wonder how much jizz you electronics repair RUclipsrs have unknowingly touched throughout all of your repairs.
That blue sega game gear is the sega sports edition
Yes indeed!
I remember the original microsoft xbox there was the duke controller and s type controller
Lol there’s a huge debate as to which one is the best too. Personally I like the S though.
I remember the red coca cola edition sega game gear it came bundled with coca cola kid
It did, unfortunately I don’t have a copy but maybe it would be worth it to pick up a copy to help sell it in the future. We will see…
It's being a great journey to follow, hope you will continue next year or do something similar. :)
I'm glad you've enjoyed the ride! I know I have! I have some plans for next year for what I’ll do next but I haven’t made any official decisions about it yet. We will see where those decisions lead…
Episode 11 yet? Another month gone?! D: <3 <3 <3
1 more to go!
Oh also btw I know next month is the final episode but I hope you will contiue this kind of videos because I love to put them on whilst fixing stuff myself your repair videos is what got me into doing xbox 360 and og xbox cones aswell before I was more of a Retro Sega and Nintendo guy with a little bit of playstation lol
That’s so cool, thank you! I have some ideas of what to do next after this series is finished but haven’t decided specifically what to do yet. We will see though…
If you wouldnt mind please dont throw away the corroded boards as the chips itelse are often still good and I have done a bunch of chip transplants in my time I have more boards without CPUs that work than og gameboy cpus at this point.
You want them? I’ll send them to you lol. I don’t know if I’ll ever use parts off of them. Out of curiosity, what do you do with them? Do you transfer them to new printed boards? I’ve seen some people do that but it’s a long process to say the least.
@@gamejaegerid take them off your hand. A have a few boards that where failed mods by other people that could use oem chips and parts
@gamejaeger I would love to ! And tbh I have done custom boards for GBC before and OG GB but at this point I have a few OG boards who's CPU died or who's Ram didn't want to work anymore. I would love to take them off your hands and give them a new lease on life !
Crazy, I’ve never found a GBC with bad chips ever. Whoever messages me through my email on the about page can have them I have no use for them since I don’t have the gear to do chip swaps. So at least they will go to someone that can use them. It’s only a few but if you can use them, then great!
hey for that super corroded gbc Yes the chips seems to still be good so please dont throw the whole board away okay ?
No I just put them in a bin of parts in case I may need them. But for what? I have no idea. Lol
Mine's a samsung, which is thirty five and the kit only comes with forty and above😊
Correct, I just have the kit of random sizes in the description in case other places like Console5 are out of stock for the large bands that are used in the Thomsons (at the time of this comment, they are out of stock again too). I buy the smaller bands from eBay and those have worked out great so far for Samsung and the rest of the manufacturers.
How much ferrofluid do i need
It really depends on the size of the container you plan to use and how full you'd like to make it too. For mine I'm guessing I used a little under 1 oz or about 20-30 ml per container. That's my best guess but I wasn't measuring it when I was putting it in the bottles. I just went by eye and tried a few different amounts to see what I liked best. Hope that helps!
How much did this all cost
Maybe about $200 total? Not sure, never totaled it up...
