    I see those KOG Limas! One thing you can do is snip off the tops when they reach the top of the trellis…do this at least once. It promotes branching of the vines-fills out the trellis.

    Two excellent heirloom varieties which may grow, well in your region are "purple calabash," which is possibly the ugliest, but one of the best-tasting vaieties i know. Another awesome variety is called "West Virginia Hillbilly," and is very productive in Zone 6, and somewhat resistant to some fungi. Black Krim and Brandywine are awesome, too. The, Brandywines have a great internal texture, and are great either raw or preserved, with far fewr seeds than most larger varieties

    I'm finding following sunflower with tomatoes really seems to work well.Yes using the large sunflower as a cover crop and second season following with the tomatoes.Do build up the spot for drainage is very important.Dont disturb the sunflower root ball so no tilting unless you do it before the sunflower building for drainage.

      @@shellyshetler9268 my 3 th. Season and also must build up the soil as tomatoes need air also. I've very hard pack claybase soil like cement if not well moisture truly hard. I'm finding loads of mulch small sticks and old stuff prefer any leaves grass clippings and yard was If you can turn it over some it's helpful.build up 8 to 10 inches adding some compost and soil early fall then next spring kill the weeds and plant big sunflower where you space your tomatoes let them grow leave the roots in location next season place tomatoes in next to the old stumps of the sunflower of the previous season adding lime and bone meal and expect the best result of tomatoes in your garden. Remember raised the bed is important drainage for tomatoes can drown in clay. I'm 72 years old and we don't need tilting but can have great veggies.this season I've made the area about 10 ft across I have 4 plants equal space have tomatoes cages that are tied together with sunflower stalks bracing from the four from wind damage and 4 season it's working perfect and the cheapest way to raise tomato plants. This season I have a circle of green beans that are getting off to a good start.. Have grass clippings in center that hold moisture and are almost weedless. Soon I'm starting a third setup and I'll get lots of pictures and post on this website.

      @@bloomandwiltgardens I also built up the soil much as in ground beds as I've claybase soil and drainage is so important. I've 14 Black Krim and the 2 plants in the sunflower setup are double producing any two of the others and larger tomatoes my best 1.27 lbs I believe probably my best Black Krim ever and plenty of the 3/4 lbs size and I've Thourburg Terracotta that is very loaded and large fruit coming 😄. I'm 72 truly easier than the other 10 methods I've ever tried and in the last 5 seasons I've been trying hard to learn a easier and more productive system I'm saying this is all that. I'm setting up 4 of this setup and expect to cut my work in half or less also less water as last year's drought early season in Ohio I definitely saw a huge difference as my setup was twice as far to water as water in my rain barrels dried out I didn't water this setup and still definitely better productive plants

    Not only are they non-native, but they are invasive in Ohio and I think much of the US. Same in NJ where I’m from which is sad because I like the taste. I plan to replace them with the black raspberry bushes that are also nearby. You are right that they are closely relates. Wineberries are native to Asia and were brought here as a crop. But they ended up outcompeting the natives species so strongly that it’s not illegal to sell them in some states in order to protect the environment. *they are not illegal to own. Just to sell. You are not in trouble. 😅 **I think it would be illegal for you to purposely propagate it though? I’m not sure.

    The cinnamon slows them down a bit. To my eye, they are just more reluctant to walk on the soil but not discouraged completely. I had ants infestation around my sweet potato. What helped was the borax paste. I applied it on several places around my sweet potato bags. It worked a little too well at attracting ants. At one point I was worried all of them would swarm from the woods. So once the had eaten good amount of the borax paste. I circled by sweet potato bags with a string soaked with need oil and soap. And killed the ants far away from my sweet potato bags with boiling water. I had some borax in the sweet potato bags where the ants were building nest as well. I put the neem-oil-infused string into the bag to prevent the ants from escaping. The borax paste was close to the root. I left it for the night and in the morning the problem was gone. 😮‍💨 So far so good. 🙏 I find the borax paste 1:6 borax:sugar ration very effective. You dissolve the borax in a bit of water first and then add sugar - gradually so that it gets coated with borax. The paste should be to syropy as it will harden one applied on the soil and the ants won’t be able to it it. It’s also best to put it close to the ants nest as it really as the power toattract a whole army of ants. 🙈 Good luck everyone!👋

    I have a problem with my raspberries. In the spring early summer, they have boatload of flowers. The bees are there daily, but the berries don't fill out. The buds dry up and I get only a couple handfuls of berries. I have thinned the bushes, and watered several times, but it didn't make any difference. Do you have any suggestions.

    • @bloomandwiltgardens
      @bloomandwiltgardens 24 дня назад

      When are you pruning? You should prune the bushes when the plant is dormant (late winter) and only the 2nd year wood (the brown dried look stalks). If you're doing all of that, then I would assume the plant is missing some mineral is need to set fruit. Applying organic compost or fertilizers will help.

I prefer them "horrible tomato cages" But I start the row with a 8 ft T post .Then 5 cages space about 3 feet center to center then second 8 ft T post and repeating as long as desirable end with a 8 ft T post. At the end of the run of cages which I only stick into the ground 6-8 inches .I add 2 wire ties connect the cable at 2 points on the cages helps.. I connect a steel cable ( small about 1/16 inch diameter running it thew each of the cages near the top of winds blows the T post are working for my third season and tomatoes are very manageable in the cages. I do prefer the larger cages. Also save lots of money craigists bargain them horrible tomato cages as most people don't know how to do this...yet. ( really test this and you might teach others.

      “Hügelkultur” is a German word that means mound culture or hill culture. A hügelkultur is a sloped and raised planting bed filled with topsoil, wood, and organic materials. German and European people have practiced it as a gardening method for hundreds of years. extension.okstate.edu/fact-sheets/sustainable-landscapes-creating-a-hugelkultur-for-gardening-with-stormwater-management-benefits.html

    I read that grocery store garlic is not the garlic I want to use to grow my own garlic. Where should I get the garlic I do want to plant?

      Many online seed sellers also sell hardneck garlic towards September. Or if you have a local grower of garlic you can buy from them directly.

    Thank you this is a perfect answer to my question! I even have the same exact package of roots. Saw your 4 year update and now I'm very excited although my roots look a little different (not sure if 1 of them is an intact root) I'm new to growing flowers/ornamental plants, I usually just grow veggies, trying to help the hubby revamp our front gardens this year.

      Very glad to help! Ornamental plants are really nice to have but do require patience as they get established. After 2 years they really start to take off! Best of luck to you!
