My videos aren't your regular "How-to" tutorial videos. Whenever I have something to fix or modify on my MK6 GTI, I document exactly the way the job goes in real life.
MK6 VW Golf GTI Rear Shock Absorber AND Coil Spring Replacement | Koni Shocks, Eibach Springs
This is the completion of the shock and coil spring upgrades I've made to my 2012 MK6 GTI. This video is the full prcess for replacing the rear shocks and coil springs. This job was a dream compared to what I went through when I replace my front struts and springs. Check out that video below if you want to see all the issues I had.

MK6 VW Golf GTI Front Strut Replacement UPGRADE | Struts, Lowering Springs, Sway Bar Links
Просмотров 29814 дней назад
The entire suspension system on my 2012 MK6 GTI needs a lot of attention. The thing that finally got me to do this job was a broken coil spring on the front driver side. This video shows the whole process of the front strut and coil spring replacement, as well as some new sway bar end links. Btw, this is just the first batch of fixes and upgrades I plan on doing in the coming months. My videos ...
MK6 VW GTI Rear Muffler Heat Shield Replacement | No More Rattle
Просмотров 82Месяц назад
The rear muffler heat shield on my MK6 VW GTI has corroded away and was creating that signature annoying rattle. I know there are a bunch of clever fixes out there, but I decided to just replace it. This video will show you how I removed my heat shield in the event that you want to go this route as well.
MK6 GTI Leaking Sunroof | My DIY Solution #vw
Просмотров 4022 месяца назад
I guess it was only a matter of time before my MK6 GTI came down with the dreaded sunroof leak. Seems to be a common issue. Probably like a lot of you, I noticed that my interior carpet was extremely saturated with water. It's possible that that leak can originate from a few different spots. This is my DIY fix for my particular situation. #vw #gti

Next ep review your tools pls😁
Hm interesting idea. Was there any particular tool that you were curious about?
@@chilledspeed start with ratchet , socket set and others for fix a car 😆
Have to say, your camera work is brilliant and was a very easy video to follow. Was looking up how hard the job was as my Golf in in VW having a service and they called me because one of my cables snapped due to age. P.S - Please change the batteries in your smoke alarms :)
Thank you! and damnit, you're not the first person to comment about the smoke alarms haha. the batteries are changed now though so no more chirp sounds will be in my videos.
@@chilledspeed haha! I thought I was going mad, I even paused the video to go check that it wasn't mine cherping 😄 Still awaiting the call from VW to tell me how much this is going to cost me.
Nice video. I'm eyeing this for my 2012 Wagon here soon. Nothing broke but the ride is very rough/stiff and loud. I know most folks go for a lowering kit but I'm kinda interested in lifting it a little bit. Any idea on that? My wagon rides lower than my wifes Jetta sedan. Would love to get a bit more clearance and not bottom out when backing in the driveway 😆
Honestly if your coil springs are just old and worn out, putting a fresh set of OEM springs would probably raise the height of the car just by the nature of them being brand new (it wouldn't raise a lot, but a little). If you wanted to go beyond that, I know that they make lift kits for some VWs that are essentially metal spacers that attach to the existing suspension, but I personally have never messed around with those at all so I can't speak to the quality or functionality of them. Quick story: i actually had a used Mark III GTI a while back (with the VR6 engine). I remember changing the springs once on that car with some new OEM springs, and it honestly almost looked like I put a lift kit on it ha. The distance between the fenders and the tires ended up being more than I thought it was going to be. There was a solid 4 inches of space. I thought there would be maybe 3 inches at the most. It probably won't be quite that drastic for you if you did springs, but it could still be all you need.
Mk6 dont have that.
They started to have the button in 2011. Mine is a 2012. The only mk6 GTIs that don't have the button are the 2010s
I didn't know we have that kind of socket 😮
yeah it's a called a strut nut socket
Nothing like new parts, simply lovely 👍💜❤️💜❤️
It's very satisfying ha. It was long overdue too
One broken spring equals $2000 I think I’d rather not 😂
I could have just done springs, but my car is 12 years old, has just over 100,000 miles, and still has all the original suspension parts. I wasn't going to go all the way in there and not replace the struts too. I plan on keeping the car for a while yet so I was more than fine with it.
Nice upgrade :) also with the ecs mounts:)
Upgrades!
Absolutely, lightly lube the pivot pins
Thank you very much for put it up here. Very helpful, now I can make myself ready to get it done.
Happy that it helped!
What brand of calipers did you get for the rears? I may have to do this shortly. Original calipers are $$$.
I went with Powerstop. Part #S6384. My mk6 has the 272mm Bosch rear brake calipers (vs the 282mm).
The MK6 is awesome! I’ve owned mine for an over a year now.
Nice! Yeah it's a fun car. Especially for performance mods
Nice content. Now I will stop procrastinating and replace my calipers.
Great video with good close-ups, and I loved the split screen effect. This will certainly help with changing my son's VW Scirocco cables, as the layout is the same. Thanks for sharing.
Amazingly helpful. Thanks for just demonstrating and using text instead of useless talking. Cheers!
Happy it helped!
Okay now that I'm looking at the code again it does say at idle hahaa, my mistake. 😅 I've never worked on this cars so wasnt sure exactly what to check but i have some ideas now. Thanks!
Yeah, I'll admit the issue that caused the P2187 code on mine is probably different than most other people because it had to do with the aftermarket air intake that I have. But before I discovered that leak in the intake coupler, one thing that I was actually pretty convinced was the cause of it was the mass airflow sensor being either dirty or faulty. That's a possibility you could investigate.
Im having the same code pop up on my vw gti mk7 except it says bank 1, not on idle.... I just purchased this car a few months ago and I've actually had this issue since the 1st month but i barely drove this car because i also got a flat in December and waited till recently to address the flat and this code. I also have a misfire on the 4th spark plug which i addressed last week, as well as the tire but figured i should address this lean code before i take it out for a drive...
Need to replace the battery in your smoke alarm bro!
Haha yup. I actually did finally do that recently so that annoying sound won't be in my videos anymore.
What about headlight bulbs replacement?
For just the bulbs you definitely don't have to remove the bumper. I think the bumper has to come off if you're removing the entire headlight assembly though. I know some people say that, to replace the driver side headlight bulb, you have to jack the car up, remove the fender cowlings and go at it from underneath, but I've done it without going through that (granted I did have to contort my hand pretty severely to get it). Also, removing the top of the fuse box gives you a little extra room for your hand.
(sorry if you got a notification that I disliked your comment, I clicked the dislike totally by accident. then I unclicked it right away and clicked the like button. oops)
Can i have the brand of the tensioner
I used the one made by Febi Bilstein. 06J903133A
Where did you get the cap from? I have the same pressure bleeder but the cap doesn’t fit.
It's the one that came with the bleeder. Yours doesn't fit?
nope just tries to cross thread and leaks
Hm that's odd. I wonder if anyone else has had this problem. Is your car a mk6 GTI like mine? (I know the bleeder should be universal, but I'm curious).
@@chilledspeed Mines a mk5 but with the TSI I always have trouble finding parts as some are mk5 some are mk6.
Thats when you realise cars are made of so many parts and even a simple one being badly engineered can destroy a car over time.
Too true. I've never had a sunroof leaking problem like this before. The next thing I'm probably going to have to do is pull up all the carpet to let it fully dry out so mold doesn't start to grow.
bro, your videos are addictive! keep it up!
Excellent video! I've also got a mk6 GTI. I've done brake fluid flushes on my prior cars (BMW Z3, Toyota Tercel) with a pressure bleeder, and it's always been really easy. Quick, and a noticeable improved firmness in brake pedal feel afterwards. However on my mk6, the pedal felt exactly the same after as before. So I've been never replaced it again. So your video is a nice wake up call for me. Also, that other commenters is wrong and you're right, re: greasing caliper slide pins. Cheers!
Thank you! I'll also be posting a video of me bleeding the whole system soon (not my next video but probably the one after).
Thank-you for this. I just watched the other bumper off video and I'm glad you took the trouble to put this up. I have exactly the same problem after some flooding here (although I also had to replace one of the radiator fans).
Glad to help! Same here. I think every single video I watched too said that there was no way around removing the bumper to get that fog light out and I thought to myself "no way am I doing that" ha.
You are very lucky too discover it now, the brakeline could have shaped during braking with horrible consequense.
I knew I should have just replaced those things when I had everything disassembled ha. At least I don't have to re-disassemble everything to switch them out.
@@chilledspeed that is true, those hoses are pretty simple to replace. Pay attention to the brake fluid if that is still good, you are still bussy.... Better save that sorry! Good luck 👍
Don't lube pivot pins, it wasn't designed for that
I assume you mean the 2 guide pins (or slide pins, as some people call them). I don't believe you're correct on that. Are you sure?
@@chilledspeed 2 pivot pins need lubricant . He doesn't know anything
Lubricate....i think is the solution.
I would agree with you if those sway bar links had grease fittings, but they don't. They're sealed from the factory.
Thanks Mate. Excellent explanation. I've not got a stuck caliper but handbrake cable is starting to sieze on one side as it's split and rusting, so this video was perfect for me.
Any update on the Caliper?
I got a new set of calipers but I haven't had a chance to install them yet. Soon though!
I just did this on a 2015 Tiguan. Very in depth and nice video! Thank you!
I have a similar issue with mine, however, the cable rusted so that it was partly on. This was caused by a sticking caliper. Disconnected the cable for now, caliper and cable on order. You made this job a whole lot easier thank you.
where did you put the floor jack to raise the car ?
From the back, there is a subframe crossmember that sits just passed the gas tank. I slid my floor jack in at an angle toward the passenger side (to clear exhaust pipes) and I raised the rear end from there. My jack is just long enough to reach it. Then I also put jack stands under the jacking points on the sides.
Muchas gracias por el video que hiciste, me es de mucha ayuda ya que le tengo que cambiar el tensor de la correa poli V. Saludos desde Buenos Aires Argentina 🇦🇷
Encantado de poder ayudar
It can be..
It can be....what?
I did this job today - thanks for putting together the video, it was a nice supplemental guide! I tried about a hundred times to get the 5mm bolt on the tensioner off with a wobbly. I tried tape, and jamming the u-joints with a rag, just couldn't seem to get it in there right. In the end, I removed the three bolts to the AC pump and was able to get in there with a stubby ratchet w/ a 5mm fitted. Just thought I'd pass along my story, and my gratitude! Thanks again.
yeah I remember that little 5mm bolt...it was a pain ha. Glad you got yours done!
Shiit ! exactly the same noise as my car removal n tight everything still the same problem 😂
Wish I didn't have a 2010 because we don't get a button in the glove box its just supposed to turn off "automatically" shits stupid and I see why 2011 onward had them installed lol
wow i didnt even know that. that is dumb
Hey man question what size o2 sensor spacer did you get and if you can may you send the link where you got yours?
That O2 sensor spacer was from 42 Draft Designs. It was installed by the shop that did my stage 2 tune (which was about 6 years ago at this point). I wish I could provide a link but, unfortunately, they've discontinued it since then. Sorry!
Guess I’ll try again. Unless you’re somewhere near south Florida!
Nah im no where near south Florida. Just make sure you're drilling right in the center and use a drill thats big enough so that when the drill gets passed the screw head, it'll pop off the shank. Then you should be able to pry the filter holder apart.
Also. I tried drilling like you are, but it didn’t go deep at all.
How did you get it off??? This is what happen to mine. Plz respond asap lol it’s been months. Hope your still alive. I need ya lol
I drilled until the screw head came off. Then I was able to pry the plastic holder apart and the rest of the screw came out. I actually have a full length video of this job on my channel.

I changed the fuel filter on my 03 s10 v6 4.3 to a k&n fuel filter just for shits n gigs. I'm glad I did! There ws so much dirt that was sitting in the drip pan after taking out the old filter. 😅
good call! yeah surprisingly the fuel that came out of my filter didn't look bad at all. I figured 11 years with the original filter was long enough but im thinking I probably could have gone a little longer. I guess it all depends on how many miles you put on your car. My mileage is slightly lower than average.
@chilledspeed I believe what I replaced was the original filter. I bought the truck with around 85k miles, I think I'm around 94k now. I've had it about a year. Pretty cool for an 03 I think
I changed that but still can hear the sound.
Perfect video! Thanks!
glad to help!
Nice video! How’d you determine that the tensioner needed replacement?
I started hearing a squealing noise when the engine was under heavy load and the revs were low. for instance: sometimes here and there I set off in 2nd gear from a standstill instead of 1st gear and I would hear the noise. And then it got worse and it started squealing even when I would set off in first gear. The tensioner was the most likely and least expensive culprit, so I did decided to replace that first and that fixed it.
@@chilledspeed Thanks for those details, much appreciated! Glad that was indeed the fix.
glad to help!@@tedjohnson64
with your bad ones on and the car lifted up, could you feel that they were bad, I have identical clunking but I really don’t feel any “play” in them.
I actually didn't feel much play at all, no. And that confused me when I first tried to diagnose what was causing the clunking noise because I would try to locate something that was loose but couldn't pinpoint anything. But a lot of other people said it was most likely that stabilizer links based on the sound so I decided to switch them out for new ones beacuse its a pretty easy, quick job. And sure enough I discovered that the driver side link was bad when I removed it and felt the play in the joint. But no nothing felt loose when it was still on the car.
@@chilledspeed cheers! They are cheap and easy enough to replace I’m Gonna go for it this week. Just replaced my control arms so I guess now tnat that’s tightened up it’s letting other loose components be more exposed
Yeah I'm getting ready to give the rest of the entire front suspension a complete refresh because now something in my passenger side front starts clunking whenever I turn hard to the left (pretty sure its a worn-away bushing in the control arm but could be something else. Haven't looked at it closely yet). So first it was stab links, now it's this. All the other parts probably aren't far behind so that's why I'm thinking about doing it all at once ha.
The same noise have and control arm bush...
My 2019 Arteon 4motion, have the clunk noise also. Took it two 2 VW dealers. No issue found 😒. Taking it to an independent German shop to do a full inspection. But I have a feeling, it will be an endlink joint problem. Purchased the car used with 40k miles. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent vid, thank you. One question…how do the wheel lock lugs affect this procedure?
Shouldn't change anything about the procedure at all.
