The Whisky Enthusiast
Добавлен 3 май 2021
Hi everyone I'm a whisky enthusiast through and through. I love everything about the water of life and I want to share my good whisky moments with you.
I read a lot on the topic and watch videos created by fellow whiskytubers. I got myself certified by the Edinburgh Whisky Academy in Scotch and Irish Whiskies just to learn more about the process of production, history and everything in between.
I only share my own personal thoughts and opinions of the drams I have and I don't claim to be an 'expert'.

Does PACKAGING Sell? - Deacon Blended Whisky Review
Today I look at Deacon Blended Whisky. The bottle is an incredible copper colloured, tactile design with steampunk elements. It has a plague doctor logo and is begging to be bought off of the shelves. Normally I'm weary of these over the top packaging as more often than not it means what's inside is mediocre. Let's see if this one would break the cliche or is another example of style over substance. Cheers!

Best Budget Blend? - Langs Blended Scotch Review
Просмотров 27714 дней назад
Today I look at Langs Blended Scotch from Ian Macleod. This blend is bottled at 46v and un-chillfiltered featuring malts from Glengoyne and Tamdhu distilleries. The craft blended Scotch category is getting bigger and bigger and even though this one is coloured, the rest of the specs make us happy. Let's see if Langs Rich & Refined can make a name for itself amongst the tough competition. Cheer...

Does Higher ABV Mean Better Whisky? - Jameson Black Barrel & Proof Review
Просмотров 306Месяц назад
Today I look at one of my favourite easy sipper whiskies, Jameson Black Barrel. Matured in extra charred casks, the Black Barrel adds depths of caramel and toasted biscuit notes to the original green label Jameson. I compare the standard Black Barrel to the Proof version where the abv is 50%. Let's see if higher abv does mean a better whisky. Cheers! Thank you @WhiskyWars Ash for the sample of ...
Whisky Aroma Kit - Do You Actually Need It?

It is however an expensive kit and mostly aimed for the industry pr...
The Worst Whisky Ever!

I tried the worst whisky ever! This is Loch Dhu 10, essentially a Mannochmore with way too much E150a caramel colouring. It's more chemical experiment than whisky but it has it's own following due to it's completely black colour. I got a small sample of it thanks to Mark Littler and believe me it was enough. Today I review the Deanston 15 Tequila Cask Finish. This whisky has been initially matured for 12 years in ex-bourbon casks and then finished in ex-tequila casks for another 3 years. A delicious Whisky - Benriach 21 Review
Thanks!
@@whatsthepoint170 Hey thank you for the support, I appreciate it a lot! 😃
People love Bunnahabhain…but just like you I have not connected with their style. Good thing there’s plenty of others out there to drink! Cheers
Yes absolutely! For sure they make good, integrity whisky but we don't have to like them just because they're well made. Thanks for watching 🥃
I have a bottle of each, and they are both very good. But when I learned that I was going to be a grandfather some time back I rushed to my cabinet and poured a huge dram of Uigeadail. I suppose that makes Uigeadail my winner.
Yeah I think that seals it for you 😃 Congratulations on the arrival of your grandchild
Just had a sample. I also enjoyed the nose more than the palate. Certainly an eye catcher. Thanks for sharing! Cheers!
Thanks for watching Jon! Yeah it's eye catching and looks cool on the bar but that's about it really.
My local liquor store's website says aged for a minimum of 12 years in oak casks. I don't see that on the manufacturer's website. The bottle design is very tempting, and it isn't particularly expensive, but I will resist.
Yeah I would think if it was 12 years or older they'd really shout about it. You're not missing much in terms of flavour. It's not bad and yes it's cheap so if you like how it looks the trigger could be pulled or better yet it could be on your Christmas wish list 😃
I try to ignore packaging whenever I can, so nice job breaking the quality of this blend down. Sounds like a cocktail mixer that looks cool on the bar ...
Yeah generally me too but sometimes the design is a bit too intriguing 😃 Yes this is exactly that Tim!
An eye catching bottle for sure that I’ve walked by so many times…. Cheers 🥃
Keep on walking John, not missing much 😅
Great review sir❤
Glad you liked it! 😃🥃
No murdering necessary! Loved the video. This is one I haven't reviewed the modern iteration of... clearly I need your friends ;-) Agreed on the apricot, the peach, the sandalwood. Great notes my friend!
Hahaha glad I'm safe 😃 Well I am lucky in friends for sure. I had another one who shared his 29 year old Glenfiddich Yozakura with me back in London 😉
@@thewhiskyenthusiast Always bro. Until next time... Kanpai!
This is great…but for entertainment purposes only! Would never splurge on a bottle but would be fun to try at a bar. Maybe as a gag with someone who has no idea. 😂
Hahhaha I love the idea of tricking someone with this. If I'll ever do it, I'll let you know 😃
Overrated
A lot of people definitely agree with you.
Oh I wish they'd used peat for the sauternes-- peat + sauternes is my jam. I just ordered a bottle though. Thanks for the review!
Peat and sauternes I only had in a Port Charlotte and yes I did enjoy it as well. Hope you like the unpeated version. Thanks for watching
You really make me want to check out a distillery Sertug! Lowland region is certainly getting exciting, excited to see where it will be in the next few years!
You should definitely do so Ash, it gives you a great new perspective into the production side of the whiskies we love.
Forgot to say, for the record, French spelling wise, that you don't spell the "z" at the end of the first word, so "nez" should be spelled "né" (close to "nay" but not exactly the same). It's like the "'s" at the end of "Sauternes", you don"t spell it, so you"d rather say "Sautairn". 😉
Thanks for the impromptu lesson Greg 😃 good to know these things 👍
Nice review, Sertug, I was there in 2018 before the whisky was ready & it is too long story to tell here but I knew the owners prior to their opening of their distillery so was looking forward to this opening...btw, I saw cask one in the tiny warehouse which was cool. For the record, the stills are named "sisters stills" simply to honour the owner's (Drew & Helen) 2 daughters Poppy & Gee. I love the "museum" side of the distillery, being a fan of medieval/renaissance music fine arts & music too, and I guess as you mentioned that the Aquavitae they produce is the closest to what "proto-whisky" was before what it is now...I only have 2 expressions of them, not many are distributed here unfortunately, but I tried that STR release & found it nice. There are some French storepicks ones too, but I have to say I didn't jump on the wagon for all, and one is a bit scary on the paper as it is both Rum & peated casks involved....hit or miss, right ? Anyway an informative video as always, Cheers ! Tip : Next time you (or for your viewers) visit the place, try their pea soup, it's delicious !
Thanks for watching Greg. I didn't know about their daughters but the story of the whole place is very cool. Yeah their STR is nice but there are some amazing single sherry casks out there. The peated rum one is actually very good. Hah pea soup you say? Will do if I visit again 😃
Interesting, I didn't know there was an English version of it, but then why keep only the French initial name on the cover ? (for copyright reason I guess?). Anyway Im' seing this box for a long time (as you mentioned it, it is not recent) & didn't decide to buy it, it is expensive & as its a necessarily a chemical recreation, it's a limited experience...Interestingly though, it is not that far from the special kit of 49 flavours (some being placebo ones, mind you) they put in front of you along with a computer to evaluate & train you at specialized hospitals here when you've lost your nosing ability following a virus (not only "cword" mind you) like I did in 2015 (and it did last several months !). They also asking you to try a selection of botanicals every day/week to help & see if it comes back or not. So, yeah indeed, if one can"t afford this, and even if you can, to train your nose, for me nothing replaces a genuine every day experience like you said, everywhere you can (I wrote about this on my website) & to discover new things every year too, travel & discover other countries scents & fruit, etc...Besides, I know Martine Nouet, our biggest whisky writer here (& a fantastic food & whisky pairing expert) along with guys like Serge Valentin, she lives in Islay since more than a decade now & I guess has the best time of her life !
Thank you for your insight Greg, I always appreciate it. Some placebo ones eh? I would be pissed off if I paid for this set and some of them were empties 😅 Yeah it definitely is a useful piece of equipment but not at this price! Go out, smell different things and try to memorise them is a much better and fun experience :)
@@thewhiskyenthusiast Absolutely....
Thanks for the review. Enjoy your opinions. I hope my bottle is awesome and I hope I get the Chichibu in the ballot that I entered.
Thanks for watching 😃 I bet there will be some batch variations but even Ichiro Akuto says this one is one of his favourites so I'm sure your's will ne nice too. Fingers crossed for the Chichibu 🤞
Thanks for sharing… a lot of interesting blends on the horizon. Cheers 🥃

@@WhiskyLoversSociety It is a good one at a good price 🥃
Glad one of us got to try it! I saw a Glengoyne 50 at the distillery and just looking at the bottle made the time stop.
I feel so so fortunate to be able to try such a whisky. These kinds of drams fill our dreams and I absolutely know the feeling you're talking about. Just to stare at certain bottles is transcendental!
Some of my picks: Best value C13 Best Distillery Ardnamurchan & Bruichladdich Best “ new” distillery Torabhaig Best Indie G&M Best Single Malt Ardnamurchan cs Agree with you in that I don’t really connect with Bunna cs Enjoyed your take! Cheers 🥃
Thanks John! I'll be a very happy camper if all I had to drink was your choices 😃
Glad you didn't end up paying over the odds for this one. I was able to find it at local grocery stores for a little more than the regular release, so maybe that influenced my enjoyment of it!
Yeah me too! It's certainly not bad but felt too muted and not enough oomph to justify the hunt. Cheers Matt!
A friend of mine got one of these from a vineyard which we were able to try out when doing a whiskey tasting. Not every one overlapped, but enough that it was fun to explore!
Yeah it really is a fun little activity. You do learn to appreciate some notes and learn new ones as well.
love the tic-tacs to clear the palate immediately after tasting it!
Hahhah yeah me too! Mark knows what he's doing 😃
Yeah, not the best, but rare, the bottle looks good, and it's not going to be disliked as they're blended to be approachable
It is delicious and beautiful but no way warrants the price. A good experience for me 😃
You definitely should try Ancnoc 24 Sertug, strongly recommended
Yeah I know I need to remedy that 😃
Blue label is great for someone who doesn’t have a complex whiskey pallet. It’s meant to appeal to the masses. It’s one of the smoothest whiskeys out there. It’s nice for parties, special occasions or makes an awesome gift. It’s not a practical every week whiskey because of the price. If you can find a bottle for 170-180 on sale I would say pick one up. I just picked up a bottle for a holiday gift and the price after tax was 215. I see people saying the price in some states can go for 250 and up. A lot of whiskey people say they would rather have something like a Macallan 12 that goes from 80-120 a bottle. I think Blue Label has a huge cultural significance and was used as a status symbol for a very long time. Johnny Walker is also a brand that a lot of people are familiar with.
This is a fantastic summary and I absolutely agree with everything you're saying. Thanks for this elevated comment and thanks for watching
Well I’m glad I’ve cured your FOMO 😂 I suppose it’s a good thing because it’s hard to get now, I totally agree with your more muted nose + banana addition though, I think it’s great to mention that because most won’t guess that going in, it surprised me too. I do get a bit of like a papaya note which turns it a little sweeter and more tropical for me which anything tropical I love so I do prefer the proof for that but I’m with you. I don’t think people should overpay trying to track this one down. I think I paid around €45 in cork duty free near release day so the price I was really happy about I’m also interested in the CS but it’s very pricey maybe 120 ish from memory! Great review my friend
Thanks Ash you really did cure it 😃 I'm not so familiar with papaya so I couldn't comment on it but overall the Proof felt a bit lacking which upset me. I suppose at the end of the day it is a young blended Irish whiskey and we can't expect too much from it just because the abv is higher. Thank you again for this opportunity, much appreciated
Great video brother. Have eyed this off and love the idea / concept, but haven’t pulled the trigger because whilst it’s an invaluable tool, it’s criminally overpriced. So much so that I thought Macallan must have released it 😅 Your suggestion of just buying the herbs and aromas (I.e. a lemon) and smell everything is the way to go. There are also other aroma kits on the market for a fraction of the cost of this.
Hahahaha it wouldn't surprise me if Macallan had a finger in this 😂 'Whilst it’s an invaluable tool, it’s criminally overpriced' sums it all! Thanks for watching mate!
€300?! holy crap - I'd pay €50 tops.
That kit looks great… much work and effort and Research must have gone into it which I think justifies the price…. But as you say… better to share with a serious group. Cheers 🥃
Yeah it is expensive and yes it is useful but at the end of the day it's only worth how much you're willing to pay for it and whether you think you need it.
@@justwhisky Oh yeah massive research went in to it I'm sure and to get the extracts of all the aromas would've been hard work too. It's very useful but like you said John, better to get as a group. Cheers!
Awesome posusm. thanks for sharing
No drama llama, thanks for watching!
I've definitely been there on the tech issue re-record (we had a whole conversation about this on the last roundtable). At least you got a really high quality whisky to re-record ...
Hhahaha yes that was my comforting thought as well!
Thanks for sharing the stained empty bottle…. Nasty 🤮 Cheers 🥃
It really is nasty John, thanks for watching
I’ve been there 😅 recording for the second time, hopefully it wasn’t a long recording! I did this on one of my buying guides… 55 minute recording, 6 whiskies.. 😂 this sounds like a very poor dram, thanks for the warning!
Ah man that sounds painful! Thankfully mine was just 6-7 minutes. Oh this is horrible Ash, but if you ever find it at a bar for a reasonable price, why not give it a go :)
The price on internet 220 pounds !!
Yeah it became a collectors item!
My comment doesn't appear, did RUclips just censored me ?
Oh uh what did you say? 😅
@@thewhiskyenthusiast I just mentioned my worst whisky (only bottle who's content finished in the sink) & the infamous whisky writer's name who recommended it, but with no insult or no offensive word....😌
I'm aware of this whisky's abysmal reputation from Mark's site some time back. People want to try it because it's so awful. Mind you, Jim Beam Devil's Cut has to give it a close run for its money. That's the worst whisky I've ever had.
Yeah it does have a novelty side where I was very curious to try it. Don't recommend any else do so though. Devil's Cut you say? It's now on my list of morbid curiosities 😅 thanks for watching
Interesting. 😂😂😂
That's one word for it 😂
@@thewhiskyenthusiast 😂😂😂
Really? i wondered how bad it could be when there is such a thing as black ram.
Well, very bad for a single malt let's say 😅
Worst whisky ever? Worse than even Bell's or William Lawson's?
They're just boring and insipid. This is 40% and disgusting.
Well maybe I should've said worst single malt, but honestly this is a different kind of bad where it's not because of the cheap metallic neutral grain spirit but the horrible taste of burnt caramel.
Have you tried Tamdu Cigar Malt 3?
@@richardwallace102 I have not, no. Is it good?
Nice opportunity you had, Sertug, especially with enough amount & air in the bottle to do several tastings...For the record i don't think that Hibiki 25 yo do exist (only nas several ones, 17 yo, 21 yo, 30 yo & now very recently a quite hefty 40 yo !). I had the chance to try them all (except some nas travel retail/ltd editions & the new 40) now but it took me 25 yo to get to try the 30 yo which is now my favorite of the range, second being the 21 yo (but there is a lot of batch variations) and then the 17 yo & 12 yo (i still have some of the 12 in bottle). It is interesting to see that the Mizunara influence is more easily recognized nowadays, now there are way more releases with it (even trendy as a finish of non Japanese whisky, even some Cognac brands, mind you)..and indeed you have good friends ! Cheers !
@@GregsWhiskyGuide Wow Greg I hope I'd be able to taste the whole range one day as well! Yeah as Mizunara wood gets more and more available, we now have reference points to detect some minute effects. I have read and heard though the full effect of the wood only shows itself when a whisky is matured in Mizunara for more than 20years. It is nice to get hints of it though.
@@thewhiskyenthusiast Probably, yeah. I have several whiskies for which I can sense a Mizunara influence, only with one year finishing but it is rare it works harmoniously with the distillery character, the most surprising being a French new distillery's core range whisky with just one year of finishing (i already mentioned it in my French whisky video series : Arlett "Mizunara cask finish") & it works rather well for me.
Here is another fantastic video! you are great!
@@mertcanartan Thank you sir
I've read elsewhere that the name comes from "three" (san) in reference to Torii;s 3 sons....
@@thebiblioholic Ooh that's also interesting, I've not read that but you might be right. Now I've looked somewhere it says the name actually comes from the English Sun! Go figure 😃
Great tips and as I havent been to a big festival like this , it's good you were saying about not drinking every whisky you recieve . Makes alot of sense . I would be overwhelmed with the amount of whisky on display . Also I loved the lanyard glass holder . Great idea
@@TheKevtro101 Hey thanks for watching and I'm glad it was helpful 😃 If you pace yourself, just have a taste and relax about the whiskies you're missing, it's a rather fun festival! Cheers
Interesting review of an oddball whisky that I haven’t seen widely discussed. I picked this bottle up a while ago, but I’m not a fan. My tasting notes were fairly similar to yours. Your initial notes of metallic, floral, waxy, big tequila influence were very dominant for me. The tequila influence was just too heavy handed. I like Deanston, but this is one of my least favorite bottles. My local price for this bottle is also nuts. I bought it from a UK retailer for a reasonable price for a 15 year old, but in my US local market it was selling for $220. I guess there must be a market for tequila mixed into whisky. 🥃
I echo your comments. I love Deanston, mostly because of it's unique character. The casks overpowered that beautiful spirit and made it something else. Is it a bad whisky? No, but it's not a good Deanston.
Thought I had a good taste buds (love decent food) but who don't 😜 but when I drink whiskey I cannot pick out any flavours really!
@@colinpowell6525 There's nothing wrong with your taste buds mate, you just need to practice at 'getting' flavours. If you can grab different notes when you nose the whisky, you can get them on your palate as well. This whole 'tasting' thing is basically what the flavours remind you of, so there are no wrong notes. Maybe try diluting the whisky with water to ease the burn on the tongue initially to get more notes.
Thank you for sharing this experience with us. Your humbleness of being apart of such an unvailing only adds to our pleasure of witnessing this. You treat this whisky with such reverence only enhances the overall experience. May I be so fortunate to have a tasting of a whisky that takes my breath away as this one did you. Cheers!
@@jimreichel1466 Thank you for watching and your fantastic comment, it means a lot to me 😃 It truly was an incredible experience for me so I'm glad to know that it reflects and you've enjoyed watching it. I do hope you do try a whisky as special to you as this was to me 🙏 Cheers
I had a bottle of Blue Label given to me for my wedding and I loved it. In Canada it now goes for about $330/750ml. I just bought 1.2L of it in Taipei for $250cdn!
It sure is a tasty whisky, no doubt about it and if you are OK to pay whatever amount of money to a whisky you love, then who's to say anything on it. Enjoy my friend and thanks for watching 🥃
