Dr Prepare Introduces a GREAT 100Ah Mini Battery For 12v Kayak Motors!
In this video, we take a look at the new Dr Prepare 100AH Mini LiFePO4 battery while testing the newly fabricated rear transom mount for the Lifetime Manta Angler!
A strong battery is crucial to trolling motor use on kayaks. This is a battery that I've been testing for about a month and it performs like an absolute BEAST on the rivers. While testing, we happened to get the biggest cold-snap that MD has seen in a lot of years. I almost got shut out of moving water, as the water temp was hanging right at 33f, and the air temperature was NASTY! Cold weather performance with LiFePO4 batteries has always been a sticking point. My previous Weize battery has done quite well. This battery performs...

Pond Magic with Gary! - The Stomping Grounds Series: Episode 4
I just finished watching your video . Your PC must not exceed 54Watts according to the documentation. before knocking stuff make sure due diligence is performed. Question watts the Wattage on your PC is what and with time factor becuase looking at the data completly the MARBERO looks sweeter.
Effective draw of the laptop's charging brick (V x A = W) is 45 watts. Due diligence done! By that math, the Marbero lasted about as long as it should have, taking transformer loss into consideration. It's just a very small power station, and expectations should be tempered, accordingly.
Nice! The mod is looking good!!
It's all coming along quite well!
Glad that motor mount works better for ya. That battery sounds awesome, really good price to. Lots of good info and thanks for sharing the safety tip at the end.
Thanks, RR. This is going to be one hell of a yak when the mods are complete!
"UNLIMITED POWER!!!" - Palpatine
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Oh also that side transom you could Drill a hole in the center and use it for the anchor to go up in
The only time I've had a side-deployed anchor was on a sit-in. The first time I deployed in current, the yak filled and I lost a bunch of gear. The Manta will likely (eventually) get a bow-mounted anchor, if I even need it. Between the fully variable speed control of the motor and foot steering, I doubt I would deploy an anchor much.
Could u do a up close review on the back transom mount and where is the battery on the kayak. Will it fit in the front storage.. so do you have the foot pedal and control box going now
Yes, we go to the comprehensive rear transom build in the next video. I'm doing some work on the edit tonight. The steering is also done, and we will probably build the motor lift tomorrow or Tuesday. I had a "good" plan, but the tolerances on the Newport tilt-lock are pretty freaking tight (much more so than Minn Kota). Gary and I designed a better alternative and we had to locate and acquire some additional "niche" hardware. I'm pretty excited about this. Things are really coming together!
That looks like serious speed for a kayak... very cool! Those lithium batteries show lots of potential.
When you putting the new video with it on the back
You'll see it cruising around with the motor on the rear transom tomorrow (Sat 02/01/25) in a review of a new 100aH LifePO4 battery. I promised the batt company a particular timeline on that review and so it had to jump the line a spot. I'll edit up the fabrication/installation as soon as possible so that it's the next in line (likely next Sat).
@BarryP awesome going to buy two of these kayaks but you can only get them for lifetime right now. Walmart and tractor supply they said they don't know if they will have them back or not.. so called lifetime to see whats going on if there is a recall on them or if they are doing redesign. Guy told me no redesign yet but there was talks about it and Walmart, tractor supply, dicks sporting goods and Amazon should have them they are just not ordering them yet
@@bushwhookie1334 Unless you know more than I do, I don't think you can even get them from Lifetime right now. Please let me know what the price is direct from Lifetime, as they actually (mistakenly) have it listed on their site for $4,900 (!!!!) right now, and not available for shipping. Can you please email me at barrypfishing@gmail.com and send me the details so I can update the community?
@@BarryP yeah the guy said all of them can getting them now and sell them now. He said I can buy one now though lifetime now free shipping but I didn't ask the price i would say $699 or $799 i will call back and see. Asked him if they use affirm and they dont. That why i use Amazon to buy or Walmart cause for two kayaks be $60 a monthly be like 32months. Said Walmart tractor supply and Amazon probably start ordering end of February or early March
@@bushwhookie1334 Interesting. Something that stood out to me was on Lifetime's website (which mistakenly lists the Manta at $4,900... no shit), they HAD a message around the availability section that said the Manta will be back in stock on Feb 7. That message has since disappeared on both versions. Tractor Supply Version: www.lifetime.com/lifetime-91302-angler-kayak Walmart Version: www.lifetime.com/lifetime-91319-manta-angler-kayak
im not a fan of side mounted trolling motors....much prefer it being mounted down the center either the stern or bow with foot control steering
I'm with you 100%. Full build coming soon!
Nice review! Thanks for bringing us along!
Thanks, AiO!
I have a manta kayak with the side mount for the trolling motor and it works great. I have Minkota 30 lb that is light and easy to raise and lower. It has6 forward and 3 reverse. I rarely go over gear 3 in forward. Works great! Great job lifetime kayak for this design. I love the simple install. KISs (keep it simple stupid)
This is great feedback! I truly had the sense that it would likely work well with smaller, lighter motors. It's not that the Newport 46lb is all that heavy, but it's got A LOT of torque and made the turns pretty... "leaney", for lack of a better term. I am definitely not keeping it simple. The Newport is going on the rear, getting full pulley deployment, foot steering and PWM throttle control. Stay tuned! You might end up liking what's to come over the next couple of weeks.
@BarryP nice when will that video be up.. you may have to get another manta so u will have one to beat up on in the creeks and rivers. Then one with trolling motor on back for lakes and bigger deeper rivers
Man, that sucks after doing all that work.
It honestly wasn't much work at all. The rear mount is already done (it's awesome, btw), and the whole project will include motor raise/lower deployment from the seat, foot steering and a PWM for infinite throttle control. This is going to be my daily driver and I'm building it to work perfectly with or without the motor and associated gear. Despite being kinda heavy for its size, it is remarkably maneuverable in the small and swift water that I normally target. Vids for each mod will begin to roll out next weekend, and will apply to pretty much every kayak... not just the Manta! It's good to see you! I hope all is well!
Glad to see a video from you. I've been messing around with motorization of my canoes for years and still am not completely happy with it. That said, it does get me places that paddle power can't. Good luck with yours. Sill hoping to fish with you sometime.
It's already solved. It's getting this 46lb Newport rear mounted (already fabricated and tested) and will get foot steering, motor raise/lower deployment from the seated position, and a remote controlled PWM to make the throttle infinitely variable. Let's make it a point to get out there this Spring!
@@BarryP how did you end up patching the holes from the side mount?
@Codename_toadz I haven't, yet. I will probably just remove the mount and put the hardware back in place. It won't be in the way at all. However, they should be remarkably easy to patch. I kept the drilled out pieces for the existing switches, meters and plugs. That's more than enough material to heat, drip and mend to the adjacent HDPE structure. It actually might be worth making a short video. Thanks for the idea!
@BarryP that's exactly what I was hoping for. I patched up holes using a plastic welder kit from harbor freight. I'm excited to see the new mods for the new port. That'll be just what I need to push me to buy one
@Codename_toadz By the way, the kayak is SO CLOSE to being back in stock. We should see them shipping from Tractor Supply on or around Feb 7, 2025. They should be widely distributed for pickup by Spring.
Talk about posting the same s### over and over again 🤨🤣🤣🤣🤪

Nice vid, Scrawn! (Hmm... license plate idea.) ;-) I'm looking at the Old Town PDL 120, which is about 90lb. without the seat and pedal. Might be a little too heavy, tho. Okemo, hey? Nice.
For what it's worth, the Outlaw 11.5 (which I did not use for this demo) weighs 82lbs unloaded, and I have full confidence in that roller. And yes, Okemo and Killington are my favorites in the East.

I moved from WEst va to Va. Right next to lake anna. Bought a Tracker from Bass pro. Good to see you back.
Nice! I did a stop by Anna on the way back from a convention last winter. I totally wished I was geared up to go give it a try. It was super choppy that day. The little wind happened to be going in the wrong direction. Hit the coves, man!
The manufacturer theory behind the male/female sections not fitting down completely on a 2 piece rod. Over time, as the rod is repeatedly put together and taken apart, rod material of the male section gets rubbed and worn off. The extra male section material allows the 2 sections to still fit snug and tight.
Zankyou for the insight! 🙃
@@BarryP Haha. Nice video.
@@zankyou101 Thanks, Zank! And thank you for the insight. That certainly makes a lot of sense for certain build materials. I'm going to go ahead and pin this thread.
Very informative! I am looking to get back into a kayak but need something wide and stable, I'm 6'3" 240lbs. At 38" this one looks good. Having used it for a bit now, what are your thoughts on raising the seat a bit higher, would it hurt the stability?
It's a great kayak and you'll find it to be wonderfully stable. I actually did install a modification to raise the seat, and it doesn't make any difference to the stability. It's the 3rd video in this playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLLdVIS53jYPoI_fc5rgXLSV3D0r4_m6qe The only problem right now is availability. Neither Walmart or Tractor Supply have them in stock, and they are the only sellers. No official word on when they will become available again. What part of the country are you in?
Love my version of the HICC50. I get around 50ft with a 1g lure.
It's a great reel. Paired with the right rod, you can really zing around tiny baits.
I' recently got one & it sounds like that with all 4 internal brakes are on. Still haven't been able to dial it in.
Return it and get a replacement. This seems like a rare thing and it shouldn't take any type of effort to get it dialed. A properly operating XCS is a thing of beauty... especially at that price point.
I’m looking to buy the hicc50 but I would really prefer to use 6-8 pound Floro because I have more experience using it. So if it’s appropriate should I use 6 or 8 pound floro and also how would it compare to using braid. Additionally if braid is appropriate would I need a leader?
I'd probably go with a high quality 4lb fluoro over anything much larger in diameter if you're going to go that way. You can try a 6, but casting distance might suffer a little bit. It might not suffer, but I tend to err toward the lighter side. If you go with a braid like I do, I use a 6lb Berkley x9 Braid to a 6lb Berkley Professional Fluoro leader tied on with a double-uni. I know that sounds odd, but I go that heavy on the leader side (6lb) because I'm constantly casting around the sharp, rocky bottoms of the Potomac watershed. I haven't had any break offs. You can always use a 4lb fluoro main with a slightly heavier fluoro leader (tied with a double-uni) if you're concerned about rocks or teeth chipping up the last few feet of your main line. Another thing you could do is to utilize the two spools with two different configurations (like a 6lb fluoro on the deep spool and a braid on the shallow spool) to maximize its potential. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE TWO-SPOOL VERSION! I'd also get that Lixada handle. You'll enjoy the reel a lot more with that installed.
The first few minutes of this video made my day. Thank you. I needed that.
You are very welcome. And thank you for reminding me of this trip. It's fun looking back on the older stuff. The channel has evolved quite a bit, since.
@BarryP I'm going to go bank fish on the south branch this weekend with a buddy who has some property. Hope I can hook a few smallies.
@@Iniquity_ty You might want to jig slightly heavier than you normally will. Leaves are definitely going to be a factor.
Hey Barry, Haven't seen anything from you and hoping all is well.
I've had a huge allergic reaction to ... fall (no kidding... the allergic reactions and hives this year are pretty epically ridiculous, and have been debilitating). I'm also questioning a lot of things about this channel, including my physical ability to keep it going. I do not know if or when this channel will resume production. I might be blowing things out of proportion, but i'm severely disappointed with a lot of factors. I'm trying to figure out where this goes, or if I should even bother with it.
@BarryP So sorry to hear, brother. I was afraid your absence from your channel was heath related. My RA/ long covid forced my early retirement in May, so I think I can understand your dilemma. I've been essentially day-to-day with my capacity to function for more than a year, but things do seem to be slowly improving lately. I know how discouraging it can be to feel incapacitated for extended periods, but I've learned to make the best of it until it passes. I'm still hoping to get on the river with you when we're both on our game. Be well!
@@ri-jm5tn We should try to do so before one of the other can't. LOL
Heard about your channel at the Mt Airy pet shop. Are you on fishbrain?
Haha! I am not. I'm here on RUclips only.
20/20 hindsight, i'd have gone with the HICC50 if i'd known about it, but i got the Zephyr on sale for $60 and already took it out and caught fish and once dialed in, never got a backlash. but i really wanna try the HICC50 as well. thanks for the reviews.
I'm guessing you're using a line that has a diameter that can't quite find its way into the sides of the Zephyr spool. The HICC50 is a great reel. I'd definitely recommend the handle upgrade, though.
@@BarryP 20lb Berkeley X5. No I haven’t had that issue thankfully.

@@silvestrepalacios9009 Ah, there we go! Nice work, man!
Hi great video! Hoping to make it out there soon. what line set up do you generally like to use for the clear rivers?? Braid to flouro?
Hi there! Thank you! I always use braid-to-leader, but whether I use a fluoro or mono leader depends a lot on the water, itself. As you can see, I do mostly finesse in smaller rivers like this. This river is pretty shallow, apart from a few deeper holes. When that's the case, I'll use mono in order to slow down the fall rate a little bit. If the water is deeper or there's more current, I'll lean toward fluoro. I always use fluoro on swimbaits, jerkbaits, spinners, etc, and always use mono with topwater. That's pretty much my recipe for success. I'll be sure to have a closer look at your channel!
@@BarryP thank you for the info!!!! I've been snakehead fishing a lot the past couple years so I am always going straight braid but i know i need to start putting a leader on for the rivers lol!! I do still run straight braid a lot even in Patapsco and catch fish but I'm always wondering if bigger ones don't bite because of the line lol thanks again for the info I appreciate it!
@@MommyOutdoors I wouldn't necessarily worry about braid detracting the bigger fish. For snakehead, they are typically found pretty shallow and the no-stretch properties of straight braid will help penetrate the bony mouth on the hookset. Elsewhere, and with bass, trout, etc, I'd be more concerned with the presentation vs where the fish are. Braid, and it's buoyancy factor kinda acts like mono (pretty "floaty"). If you need the bait to drop faster, a fairly long 8-10ft fluoro leader will help get the bait down to where the fish are, if the fish are deeper or are in current. If you're using heavier baits in rivers (bigger jigs, etc), it shouldn't make a huge amount of difference.
Hi Barry. Purchased the pelican sentinel angler 100 XP and find it hard for me to fish from (stability / storage). I am considering something more stable with more room. As you have experience with the outlaw + manta which would you recommend for a 68 YO 200 pound angler?
I would definitely go with the Manta over the Outlaw. It's pretty much the same weight, but much more maneuverable. I would argue that it's more stable, as well. You can practically do a waltz on the deck. It's also cheaper!
Thanks Barry
@@bryanbambrick4826 No problem. Feel free to ask any questions.
We slammed the smallies last weekend in PA. Silver inline spinner with a red tail. They loved it.
Awesome! Glad to hear it. Were you out on the Manta?
@@BarryP yes sir! I have part 1 posted. Try to get part 2 of the trip out at the end of the week
@@Ohio_Hobbies_Guy Excellent! I'll check it out this eve! I've got to get out to do some reviews!
Love hearing that drag. Nice catches B.
Let's get out there, buddy!
@@BarryP Might have a day available this week.
Nice video! So do you mainly use the big TRD? Some really nice action and some great smallies!! Thanks for sharing!
While I mostly lean on finesse on rivers in the summer, there are several factors I consider. Water temp, current strength and depth of water tend to be the biggest factors. I'll actually regularly go to the Finesse TRD on 1/32 oz in stronger (but not necessarily heavy) flows, as they will drift a lot more naturally. In slack like this, I can cover a lot more water with the Big TRD and 1/16th oz without it falling too quickly. It's truly a case-by-case basis as to which I throw in a given area, but always have both at the ready. The general desire is to achieve the most natural presentation as lightly as possible without the bait getting overwhelmed by current or falling too quickly.
@@BarryP Appreciate the information. I seem to have more luck with the standard TRD myself.
