- In a great Spring river trip, I hit the river Monocacy River on a solo kayak mission for some Pre-spawn Smallmouth Bass fishing. The fishing wasn't as fast-paced as one might expect, but the big fish came out to play!
The ned rig plays a big role in this short but epic small river session.

Awesome video Barry. 20.75” Smallmouth, amazing. When the good Lord made the smallie, I think he turned out the most beautiful fish ever. Thanks for sharing, glad your wrist is better. Fish On.
Thanks, RR!
Nice Video! Good to see you are healing up and getting out on the water! Nice Smallies! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, brother! I really need to be wearing a brace, though. Yesterday (the next fishing vid) got pretty painful after a few hours and i had to abandon an even BETTER day. Stay tuned!
Good to see you back on the river. I need to get out next week.
Thanks, man! Be safe out there!
Sweet!!!
Great Video! You are catching some monster smallmouth's!! Nice fish! Thanks for bringing us along on the trip!
Wait until you see the next one! 😁
Awesome catches B. Glad you finally got out to play on the Monocacy.
Thanks, buddy!
I'm glad that you're having a great spring. Are you feeding these fish? Lol. Thanks for sharing.
Great catches Barry! Love to get out with you sometime, only started chasing smallies within the last year on the upper Potomac. Monocacy looks like a blast and a lil more beginner friendly. Paddling my ass upriver on the Potomac is a workout!
I was a trout guy for decades before moving to the Mid-Atlantic. The day I started getting into river Smallies completely changed everything for me. Much of the Monocacy isn't much different from your experience, right now. When launching/landing at a single point, paddling up (whether at the beginning of the day or end of the day) is an absolute battle. What parts of the Upper Potomac have you been hitting? Huge fish like this are far more commonly found in the areas of the Upper Poto where boats cannot reach. One of the things I adore about the Upper Poto is the ability to self-recover from access point to access point via the C&O towpath with either a bike or (more recently, for me) an electric scooter. You are welcome to shoot me an email and we can see about getting out sometime. The email addy will likely be truncated if I write it here, but it's on the channel's landing page in the description/more.
PS: That was a tank!
That last one was no slouch, either!
@@BarryP I actually commented before I saw the second ridiculously giant smallie. What a way to start! 👍
