Royal Coach Impact Sprinkler - AGAIN, Minimal Success?
Просмотров 2905 месяцев назад
I wanted to get this Royal Coach sprinkler working. So I did several things, remove the restrictor/stream straightener, lightened the spring - twice, changed out the bearing assembly with the SU63-D. With all of that I thought I would get a significant improvement in performance. Unfortunately the results were better, but not good enough. I am not done trying to make this sprinkler work. So you...
Royal Coach Impact Sprinkler FAILURE, with bonus SU63-D
Просмотров 2575 месяцев назад
It is a Royal Coach, model 10001. I expected Royal Coach results and I was surprised by the lack of performance. I even took the time to loosen the spring a little, but now I would go at the spring adjustment a little more aggressively. This is an old school design with a spoon arm. The bearing and nipple are pretty much normal, but the washer is a fibrous washer, tire like, compared to the smo...
SU63-D Impact Sprinkler, Smaller version of the U61 Design
Просмотров 2105 месяцев назад
There were so many things for me that changed the SU63-D from the older full size U61 design. The full size model for me is a huge difference in that it seems to move so freely, compared to the restrictive movement of the SU63 design. Two of the biggest issues for me are the washer design and the bearing spring that puts pressure on the bearing and nipple to create a stable environment so it wi...
The Gilmour Rocker Jet, unique design impact sprinkler
Просмотров 3675 месяцев назад
Gilmour has been famous for making some unique designed sprinklers. Most of them would seem normal until you see this one. It is unique for sure, and some of my expectations in how it worked was nothing like the Buckner Rocker Jet famous designs. They too were unique, and this one is all plastic, and to be honest really different from the rocker jets from Buckner, other than it has the arm that...
DO NOT BUY - Zinc Impact Sprinklers
Просмотров 2785 месяцев назад
This is a zinc model impact sprinkler. This one is well made visually and even feels pretty good. It is powered coated to protect it I am sure. The design of the body is a little different than the other zinc models that I showed. The Arm is a little different too. It has like two gouges in the PJ part of the arm and not sure what benefit that is supposed to provide. It has a solid feel and it ...
Swan Impact Sprinkler - U61 design
Просмотров 3275 месяцев назад
The Swan sprinkler is very well designed and made. I do not everything about it, but it is quite different in the design. The whole thing is well made and put together, as you will see in the video. It has single lever stops as apposed to the dual designs on most impact sprinklers. The arc stops are hard to move. The functionality worked very well and that surprised me too. When you see it, you...

My new Impact Sprinklers, Rain Bird and Champ - Favorites

I received two new, old Champ U61D models, needing a little attention. One with a blocked nozzle, and the other with a bent reversing mechanism. I put both in a cleaning bath and it made a huge difference. I brought out a RainTrol as a comparison to the Champ models. The basic model is the same, but there are some differences between them. When I first removed the nozzle to clean it out from th...
Impact Sprinklers, PJ or arm design?

Two different plastic 1/2" design. One I think is from Australia, and the other is a common China design. The design from Australia was very well made and an older traditional design. This sprinkler is much more interchangeable than other models I have. It also follows the Rain Bird design and purpose of the PJ arm even if it is a bit different. It also follows the older design of these sprinkl...
Chinese Zinc Impact Sprinklers - compare

These are zinc sprinklers with the exception of the one Rain Bird 25 which is brass. The whole idea here is to make the basic comparison with the different models that have the same design, but in their own way slightly different. The ones in the front row are well worn out and it shows. The green ones like the relatively new one on the stand are Orbit models. The model number does not matter, ...
Buckner Rocker Jet 762 - Impact Full Circle Sprinkler

I believe this is a 1940's version of a Buckner 762 Rocker Jet, full circle. It has a 3/4" female connection. The nozzle is 3/16. The rear defuser nozzle has a small pin to break up the stream. I will not be testing it in this video, as I just got this and will find a way to make the test and of course share it with you. The interesting thing is that even as old as it is, everything seems to wo...

PJ arm History - Rain Bird Impact Sprinklers

Rain Bird, designed the PJ arm that we know today. It is the anti-backsplash arm that solves the issues that I experienced in all of my maintenance of our part circle impact sprinklers. I was watching some of your videos and that inspired me to start looking for inexpensive plastic impact sprinklers on the A to Z website (RUclips won't let me say the name of the website, for good reasons) and I saw a review from you. I certainly didn't expect to see you on the website for this product. I searched up your RUclips video and sure enough you did make a video about that same sprinkler I saw on the site. A+++, I am now a subscriber to your channel!

    The hexagonal part at the bottom of a common rain bird impact sprinkler takes a 13/16 wrench. Some installations need a thin wrench. I bought a "Der Erwachte" thin wrench set.

    Good explanations of all the variables you adjusted. I ended up changing a bunch of these out on a large nursery project in the very early 90’s before they were two years old. I think you point out the weaknesses of the sprinkler really well. Royal Coach, and then Royal Coach / Buckner (which just sold the Royal Coach products with the Buckner brand added to them) seemed to put a lot more effort into their 3/4” to 1.25” impacts than these guys. Great video! I appreciate your detailed explanations of what you’re observing in these sprinklers.

      thank you. I am working on the possibility of one more try and test to see what other changes I have made to get this to work better. I already noticed a design flaw in the arm spoon and so I already made a adjustment to see if I can get it to work better. I wanted to take the arm out and replace it with a Rain Bird arm and that is going to be a big challenge removing the fulcrum pin. I also put it in a cleaning bath. I know I now have my teeth marks from my tools all over the unit now, but I want success over beauty at this point. Again thank you for watching and the compliments.

    Interesting results that the SU63-D works good with the Royal Coach bearing. The Royal Coach may only operate properly with the tighter spring position.

    • @randyvanheusden732
      @randyvanheusden732 5 месяцев назад

      I have noticed over the years that most every sprinkler that I have adjusted the spring so that the arm lightly hits the body, the whole operation of the sprinkler works so much better. I test the arm carefully to make sure it is not too light. If I had double the pressure of my house water flow, it might not need to be quite as light. I like the timing much better with a slower moving forward motion arm.

    Nice experiment! I have had issues with some impacts sticking because of high pressure. They literally would go forward and then trip reverse and just sit there trying tto reverse but just stayin in one spot. I turned down the output on the spiqot and it starts working again. I guess proper mainteance is required to keep these brass impacts going! Same with the big guns! Gotta keep bearings and gaskets and seals serviced otherwise youll have one that wont move or will work but leaks all over the place. I have a few older impacts that leak from the bearing, they need rebuilt.

      For me that is an easy fix with an o-ring which I have done in the past and worked well. I would put the o-ring at the bottom of the nipple, below the other washers. It surprised me how well it worked.

    Great video. Sold a bunch of the Royal Coach impacts in the period after they bought Buckner in the early 1980’s. Mostly 3/4” and up, but some of these smaller guys, too. They weren’t as rugged as the larger impacts The number that starts with a 5 is a part number. These 1/2” models weren’t as rugged as the larger impacts they made. Very good explanation about the washer. I always thought the back end of the lever looked odd on these, being cut off so abruptly. In the larger sizes Royal Coach let that lever hang a long way off the back. Appreciate your sharing this relatively short-lived brand.

    • @randyvanheusden732
      @randyvanheusden732 5 месяцев назад

      If you did not know by the printed designation, you would not know it is not a Rain Bird model which it does look like with the cut off arm. This much like what I did back in the 60's to get more of the weight of the arm to hit the front of the sprinkler, but this was on the original Blackbird that had a brass arm. It was well balanced, and it was necessary to make that modification to improve the operation. There is another issue with this Royal Coach model is that it hits the front of the sprinkler on the nozzle, which wears out the bottom of the spoon area, one of the problems with the one I have even though it looks pretty new. I also discovered after the fact that this sprinkler has a stream straighter/restrictor and I have already removed it and will make another test with that modification. Thank you for watching the video, I hope you got to see the bonus at the end and the great result.

    I think a tap or something may get it to turn enough to get it out. But Other than that I'd be afraid of damaging the threads unless you do it very slowly with a small size tap. I'm thinking maybe Bill might have some insight on getting that out, but you may be right, it might work as is . Kinda like my Melnor plastic impact that i bouight NOS. lol. Or an easy out ( i think thats what there called, they're used in the auto business to get stubborn bolts out (or nuts). Was that a plastic nozzle?

    • @randyvanheusden732
      @randyvanheusden732 5 месяцев назад

      An easy out is a good idea. It is plastic so it is not like stuck in there so tight it would be a real issue.

    Interesting design differences between the U61D and U63. I never noticed it myself, but the U63 is a mini, it def is smaller. I wonder why they designed it like that. Unless its to make it work in lower pressures. Your P4-PJ reminded me,. I think the P4-PJ-TNT was inside the 15105C. That had the metal diffuser screw and trip collars i believe. It might also have the metal TNT bearing instead of the plastic one thats on the P5-PJ. the TNT bearing was for long life between service. Heavier duty, like my 85HD-TNT. Those had a heavier longer lasting design with locking trip collars and the removeable drive spoon. That 25PJ reminds me of back when I had a few of them myself and a house down the road that had them on risers for the front underground system zone. I love the sound that tube makes, you can definitley tell when a sprinkler has it. Question, on your U61 and U63 those nozzles look pretty big, like 1/4" or bigger. Those i take it won't run off the hose right? I remember their plastic impacts having the hooks for the spring. I believe that's to make the tension a bit more loose to work in low pressure situations. My Maxi paw even has the same setup on its arm. You can take part of the spring off of it relieving some tension which makes the arm work when the pressure is low. A nice design feature in case you might want to run multiples off a hose. Your U61DP works great! and doing a great job keeping the sidesplash in line with the stream. It stinks that the design of the PJ tube was flawed and so many U61P designs broke the tube off. I have 3 toros that are missing their tubes as well.

      This P4 model is the basic plastic model that was sold on a card in the store. The older P4-P5 design had stainless stops on the plastic bearing sleeve. I have the old design and the newer design. First the old design had a separate nipple that could be removed or unscrewed. The newer models, have the nipple attached to the body and cannot be removed or taken apart without damaging the potential of the operation. The plastic bearing sleeve went to the plastic stops as well. The smaller U61 and the SU63 design are the same mini size. It is like the U61 design was downsized. The older full size U61 design used the older fibrous washer and did not need a spring between the bearing sleeve and the body. When I ran the SU63 with the fibrous washer and without that spring it works great and even better as will seen at the end of my newest video. Wait for it, Royal Coach, failure. The hook you are talking about is a new idea on many smaller sprinklers, which is much like what I am trying to accomplish with the loosening of the spring. I like that the design of those arms are designed so that you can hook the spring at a tighter or looser position. I personally like the looser position. Another experiment to arrive soon. The nozzle on those two may have been 1/4, but not sure as I thought they were a little smaller. I will have to do some checking.

    Nice SU63-D impact, a good runner. It does move a little faster after the cleaning. Interesting how the bearing spring plays a big part of the impact's ability to move depending on the washers used.

    • @randyvanheusden732
      @randyvanheusden732 5 месяцев назад

      That is just a small part of the reason I could not make it a daily sprinkler on my system. It shoots water to both sides depending on the direction it is moving. The idea was good, just so well executed.

  • @photocontrol
    @photocontrol 5 месяцев назад

    A pretty good impact, it gets the job done. I wonder how long it would take for the arm to get excessive play in it. They need to press in a brass sleeve in the arm for the fulcrum pin. The gouges in the PJ bend could be to help disperse the spray to take advantage of it for close-in coverage.

    • @randyvanheusden732
      @randyvanheusden732 5 месяцев назад

      The zinc sprinklers that I have which is a bunch that are worn out, which was the way I got them. There appears to be a part of a plastic sleeve in there, but it is the zinc that gets worn out from the movement. I agree that a brass sleeve in the arm shaft would help the arm from wearing out like it does. I have a bunch of different designs that I have paid good money for and the result is the same. Zinc designs are for me do not buy recommendation. They do serve their place and get the job done, but for how long is the great question.

    I had no idea a U63-D design existed. I thought they were all U61's. I have many U61's (some are Toro branded with the PJ tube). Although most of my 1/2" Toros are with a broken PJ tube (was a flaw in the design). I haven't seen it in the 260 design though. Yours runs good! I notice the difference in the sprinklers behavior after the bearing and nipple cleaning. These sprinklers don't move as quick as some of my U61 designs do. I remember even back then the U61 spoon drive brass impacts (The Alpha II) inside the Rise N Rain were quick reversers. A neighbor who moved a long time ago had these in his yard and even a full circle variant on a riser in the front yard (no trip mechanism or stops). But some of the Rise N Rains really moved in reverse. I think he had a pump to run all the popups too, since city water wasn't enough. I wonder if they are still at the house in the ground, with the grass overgrown over it. I'd like to know actually, Would be cool to actually go in the yard and try to find where they used to be. Thank you for sharing!

    • @randyvanheusden732
      @randyvanheusden732 5 месяцев назад

      So there are two factors effecting the difference in the movement of the smaller design is the spoon is smaller and the newer washer design requiring the bearing spring slow those models down substantially. The full size U61 design with the newer washer design also require the spring above the bearing sleeve. The older design with the fiber style washer does not require the bearing spring and those move so much quicker and better. I like they way they scoot in reverse. I like the older design over the newer design requiring the bearing spring.

    They were decent sprinklers but the reverse mechanism had a flaw. It would eventually get stuck after tripping reverse and stay in one place. The drive arm would be shooting water out of both sides. They didn't make them very long though. I should get one for myself too! Yours seems to run decent. It did seem to hang a bit after trying to trip to go forward. That was the issue with these. Wonder if it had a weak spring that needs to be tightened up. Thank you for sharing. I remember seeing these in a lot of stores then I went to go pick one up one day and they were gone. Gilmour had stopped making them

      I had mentioned the Swan a couple months ago, but I never put together my videos. It is a modified U61 design, of the mini format not the older larger design. I am becoming more and more aware that the size of the spoon has a lot to do with the movement of the sprinkler. It is noticeable in the U61 designs and modifications that I have seen in the various brands. Thank you for watching.

    The Blackbird you have out of the box looks similar to a model i had back when i started into sprinklers again. Is that a P2-PJ? I remember the old models had the metal trip collars and diffuser pin, some even had the brass spoon arm as well. I should try to find my blackbird and make a video on it (not running, maybe i could).

    • @randyvanheusden732

      The plastic one is a P4-PJ model. I think these were done this way so they could be put into the bigger canister for ground level systems. It does have the diffuser built in. The Rain Bird model 25-PJ was in pretty good condition.

  • @NelsonBigGunP200Fan

    I think that first one is a Naan irrigation zinc model. I have one too that i rescued from a trash picked tripod (hose connection was broke off), so i removed the head, and tested it on a hose type base. It worked well. I have a video of it on my channel. I think Naan Irrigation joined up with Jain, so now they're NDJ Irrigation (Naan Dan Jain). They're plastic impacts resemble the ones you sent me, and I have a NDJ branded plastic impact myself. Interesting enough it has a red sleeve over the trip notch on the arm just like Gilmour did with their brass/zinc models. I also see a very in good condition U61 with the PJ tube, it looks brand new and never used! I believe (correct if wrong) the DP means Deflector and P means PJ tube? Great score. I love the 25-PJ-DA RB also, those bring back memories as a kid of a house that had a ton of the 25-PJ-DA models (deflector) on risers for their underground system. I used to walk there every day and just watch them operate, hearing them all run at once was quite the sound! just a reminder of the days of summer!

    • @randyvanheusden732
      @randyvanheusden732 6 месяцев назад

      You are correct about the Naan model, this one was made in Israel. The Naan name seems still quite a bit in use. I did not say much about the zinc model, mainly from what I am finding out is they do not last or hold up very well, and will show that in another video. They will work and get the job done, but are of poor design and do not hold up very well. The wear is pretty extreme, I have a whole bunch that are really nothing more than parts because of the wear, but make great experimental sprinklers. I pulled our a few of my other U61 designs, because of the differences in them and of course my U61A which I will put on the stand as soon as I get the coupler off. There is a full size U61 and the mini as I call the smaller modified U61 design, as I showed in the comparison.

      It is a generic china made model that looked pretty good to me. There are several interesting points to that model. I think is designed for irrigation of larger areas, because there is no deflector or defuser. Basically the quality is very good, another unique design much like 3/4" bearing designed sprinklers is the arm is not just a straight piece like we see in most 1/2" impact sprinkler designs. The spoon part is slightly offset from the tail end, so that both the front and the back of the arm hit the body equally, if you understand what I mean. When you look at the arm of most 3/4" designs the offset will make sense. I have a dozen of these and can send you one if interested.

    Heh now that you mention it. I should pull out all of my Beta II models. I have a few PJ and one spoon drive model on stakes. Back when I was younger i traded someone a PJ model Beta II for a spoon drive. That was my favorite sprinkler and I used it a lot. Back then I had no way to take video of it running like I do now. I also have 2 6700 series popup Nelsons as well. The latter one i haven't tested yet. It is NOS though. I should test it and get a video. I've always loved the Beta II popups, and the brass versions in the green case. They were Alpha II heads inside with the PJ tube arm as far as i remember. However finding those is like a needle in a haystack. I did find a guy on craigslist with a bunch for sale and I asked if he can ship one to me but he never got back with me. I dont know if that listing is still up. There were a few houses I remember that had those green case popups. They ran great and required little maitenance. It's a shame that Rainbird and Nelson have cheaped out on their sprinklers nowadays, Nelsons popups are just copies of the RB maxi paw. I don't believe they make any brass popups anymore. However Rainbird still makes the 25PJ-DA-C that has the open ended PJ arm, which i do not like as much as the PJ tube arm due to it still throwing some spray to the side. I miss the 15111A's that i used to see everywhere as a kid.

      I know what you mean. I always found the quality of the Nelson Beta II was better than the comparable BlackBird with the brass arm, or even a favorite of mine the Raintime design. Nelson did a better job in the quality of the sprinkler. Even when the Israel company Lego came out with what I call my design, was not as well made as the Nelson even though I loved the way it worked. The Nelson Beta II, ran consistently and smoothly and that was for both the spoon and PJ designs. No doubt the Nelson made the better model back in the days of the 1960's and early 1970's. Since then the Rain Bird P5-PJ Blackbird model was the king and even though I can still find them even on Amazon, they are the best design. Shamefully, Rain Bird stopped that design in favor of the P5-R model which is quite good, but I am finding the reverse mechanism over time will begin to hang. Other wise I give them credit for making an excellent sprinkler. I am not surprised that Orbit, Toro, Champion, and others have copied the design. I think even the Optimas that I have and will share eventually in video are of the same design. I picked up two unbranded models that are like them in the canister and will see how all of them compare. Sorry I went on so long. The Nelson PJ model of the Beta II is still a favorite.

    • @randyvanheusden732
      @randyvanheusden732 11 месяцев назад

      You might want to look at the one that I used the nylon washer with and labeled it as a success. The rubber o-ring served two purposes here and that was to stop the large water leak I had and also to raise the sleeve enough so that the reverse lever would reach the other stop. As I mentioned in the description of the slow movement, it is in due part to the rubber o-ring which makes it stick to the position each step of the way. It also prevents the back end wobble. The brass arm of the blackbird was in my mind years ago the limiting factor to the success of the blackbird sprinkler. Now I know that the balance of that arm was also a factor, and of course the fiber washer did not help as they wore out much quicker than the rubber washer we have now days. Using an o-ring was my idea to prevent the water leakage and that it holds tight against the bearing nipple, or as I was taught the journal tube.

    Great video, and a great explanation of the often copied PJ tube. I really love how you step folks through the practical engineering using understandable language. Regarding the PJ age, I’ve seen them in my 1963 catalog. They filed the patent back in 1959 and it was granted in 1962. I don’t have catalogs from 1959-1962, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the 25 and 35 had that option those years. What’s interesting to me is my old Rain Bird impacts that started life with the PJ designation still have a PJ tube on them. Other manufacturers seemed to have them fail at a much higher rate, just based on the number I’ve seen where they’ve obviously fallen off. Such a brilliant innovation. Thanks for reminding me of those metal shields people put up. They also had those in ag settings. I have a 1st generation Rain Bird 35 from the 1950’s where they incorporated that shield, in beautiful brass, into the sprinkler as a massive anti-backsplash shield. Buckner did the same thing with some of their impacts of the era that attempted to fight backsplash. Nice explanation of the need for friction washers, too.

      Thank you. It is kind of funny in a way as I look at these sprinklers everyday and did not think about the fact that they all look very much alike, even though they work differently from each other. I am trying to learn more about the spacing area that is needed for the arm to work correctly. That open space before the PJ portion of the arm that is open and how much open space is necessary for it to work correctly and how much can I close it up to prevent the left side splash. Anyway I am still learning more as I play, experiment, and test. Thank you for sharing the additional information about the earlier days of the PJ tube. I have to think that part of the difference with other manufacturers and Rain Bird in how they were attached, is I think the Rain Bird tubes were welded, while the other companies soldered them on. Regardless, there is no doubt the better quality of their tube installation. As much as I like some of the designs of other sprinkler companies, there is no doubt there is a reason for the longevity of the Rain Bird company. One thing for sure they had some brilliant engineers doing some amazing design work and I am sure there was a lot of trial and error along the way. I never forgot my neighbor trying to recreate the design with some of the older sprinklers he had to help eliminate those backsplash units behind the sprinkler. I do not remember if he ever got any of them to work.

      Thank you so much and I will say the same as I appreciate your videos that you share, as I learn more with each one and I can say I wish I still had the catalogs that I gave up as my life changed and made this huge move from Florida where I grew up, and moved to Seattle Washington. I would have gone back, but I had nothing to go back for and most of my belongings were gone. I do think it is amazing that Rain Bird has out lived all of these other manufacturers. It appears that a company is still making those Western Brass designs, just as there are companies that are imitating the Rain Bird designs. I keep looking for the manufacturing companies in what used to be the Thomas Register books, now the Thomasnet.com, but nothing like having the printed version which was my encyclopedia to those companies.
