Saddle up for Mayhem on the Mainland 3 | KLR 650 | New Brunswick Dual Sport Ride | Island ADV
I wipe er’ pretty good in this one. But that’s all part of the game when you get after the trails in New Brunswick. The climbs are steep, the rocks are treacherous, but the KLR carries on.
Thanks to everyone that came out for this ride, and thanks to the New Brunswick Dirt Riders Association (NBDRA) for organizing it. Justin is our trail captain and Ugo is back as his 2nd in command (2IC).
Be sure to check out their videos of the event and subscribe to them both if you have a craving for dual sport action from New Brunswick:

    Nice work, Eric. I've definitely concluded that speed, skill, bike-type and terrain conditions are absolutely the key factors to try and balance out as best we can for the most effective, safe, and fun experience. Not always easy to do...I know🙂

      I really struggle with balancing my head, lol. I get out there, see bikes lighter than mine not loaded as heavy, and I'm like "Me too!!". lol. Then the drops start. I unfortunately didn't record most of the ride. I don't know if it's because of the previous day's ride or simply because I realized some of my batteries were dead from the day before and then never really took the time to put a new one it. I always love the Martin Head camping trip. This year, I experienced my first flat. Then I experienced my 2nd and 3rd due to patch failures...lol All I have is a bit of footage from the final approach to the beach. As always, it was a great time!

    Fun ride, fun video! I really want to get Tony out on the T7 over there. Not same place necessarily but just for an over night ride. I loved the challenge. At the end of it, my confidence was up and was hoping for some more challenge :D I was pretty nervous as we started out and then over that first rock patch. Wanted to make sure I kept up with everyone else :) Riding rock like that is a skill unto itself which we don't get much of on the Island

    • @IslandADV
      @IslandADV 2 дня назад

      Absolutely. I've done that section before and it's tough. So much wash out from the rain happens there and if you pick the wrong line (like I did) you in for a lay down or a bit of wipeout (Like I did, lol). But you're right. Rocky terrain like this is what NB is all about. It's great.

    Great video. Just rode up from Vermont through Sanguenay then down thru Sainte Rose du Nord then down to the ferry across to route 138 and looped back. Beautiful! We were going to head PEI. I have to say, despite the beautiful scenery, the Quebec folk aren’t too friendly to us Americans. I had more people try to run us off the road and cut us off, even in rural areas. Quebec City area was crazy. Everyone was in a rush to go nowhere. I don’t get it. I grew up in Boston and would rather drive through Boston rush hour traffic then through Quebec again. Sad to say, I won’t be back to your country. I get treated better in the Middle East! A shame, really. I really wanted to ride PEI on a future trip.

      Thanks so much. Welcome to PEI. When you get to Cape Bear, definitely head up to Black Brook Lookout. It's at the end of the dirt road there near the turn off to the lighthouse. The going isn't too bad. you should be able to make it if you take it slow. It's an incredible view. Cheers and ride safe.

    I know this was from a few years ago but I just got myself a KLR and wanted to say hello to a fellow East Coaster (assuming due to the Alpine flags). Thanks for the vid!

      Hey there, congrats on the new bike! Most definitely an east coaster. I got that flag way back when they first started making the camo cans for hunting season. I hope you have a ton of great adventures on the new bike.

    I see you guys are riding the KLR and the Dr. In the market for a bike and stuck between the 2. With the experience you have, what would you buy?

    • @IslandADV
      @IslandADV Месяц назад

      @Techbrentc for me I love the KLR. It's better for the longer runs on highway but can still bust trail and is capable in the dirt. The DR650 is close, but it's far better in the tight two lane trails. Lighter for rocky hill climbs. So if your ride less aggressive but you still want confidence off road. KLR is the way to go. If you want to be bolder with the trails, and don't mind the extra highway wind, the DR is the way to go.

    • @jameshuffman804
      @jameshuffman804 26 дней назад

      Same here tough decision but I chose the DR because of how much lighter it is compared with KLR

    Let's talk, Eric.....the KTM has a purpose...built for that purpose....built light and nimble.....and does it well. Realistically, do you need that HP...yes it will lift the front in a few gears....is that a good thing...not always, unless your going over logs. I think of my drag racing days and was beat by less HP cars...they were able to put the power to the ground = Traction. That kind of HP in a dirt bike can and does cause more problems than not for most riders. If you have the HP, the wheel will spin easier and lose traction in most dirt..even hard pack. Down you go. Usually the torque from low rpm is not great. All this with the fact of service schedule and costs don't make them a good deal. Don't get me wrong...I had what I call exotics myself..Bultaco and Ossa....long before your time. Will leave you with this.....fun to ride and play with if your income allows it......But run to the Gaspe with it loaded and see why you have the KLR.....The Fox will run harder and faster now with the suspension done...has the torque down low to tractor out of trouble and just enough HP to not spin the rear out unless pushed. Great on the road for travel. If you are looking for an excuse not to buy one....tell Mrs. Eric what the cost is....let her decide. As always a great ride and see you soon. Fellow Islander ..Garth

    Looks like you had a blast on the 500 and that was just the tip of the iceberg of what that bike offers. Just imagine what it feels like when you get comfortable on it, get better at dynamically position your body where it needs to be (makes a huge difference with a lighter bike) and get to just open up that throttle! It's a beast. You are welcome to try it again when you are back in NB. It will be hard to close that door now that you know what's on the other side. However, please keep in mind that adventure riding is a bit more challenging with the KTM500. There's not a lot of space for luggage so you have to learn to leave stuff behind and get the small version of everything. I have had issues with tying down luggage, melting plastics on the exhaust (needed to install a shield). So for long comfortable rides, the KTM500 is not it.

      Yes, I remember last year's ride and the tricky times you had keeping things in place on it. But you did really good with it. For me I think it would be nice to have one some day, but more likely I'll be going bigger in the bike world in the near future. Cheers buddy.
