It's a hell of a climb out of there! Nice to know that I'm not the only person who talks to themself while riding. 😂 I think we were more gassed last year because of how ridiculously hot it was that day. Sorry to hear that Dave went down but it's better that the bike hit the tree and not him! I hope that he and his bike are on the mend. Cheers!

Yeah the heat definitely cranked up in the afternoon that day. The cool air off the Bay was great for that climb. The positive self talk helped a lot too, lol. Dave was fine after that. The bike took the crash like a champ and so did he. We met up a week later and had a go over the bike in the garage and found that a weld in the front pod frame had cracked and pushed everything forward. But its not a critical part so the bike is still in great shape.

That ditch across the road was gnarly. I hit the brakes and hoped for the best. Lucky I kept it upright lol

Thank god you did man. Had I not seen your brake light through the dust, I would have blasted right into it full speed, lol. Even at the speed I hit it, my forks bottomed out.

I can understand that man. The sound of the KLR is so unique and feeling of it when you break it loose in the dirt is so satisfying. Glad you're liking the videos. I'm working away at some cool ones for the winter for us.

Man what a wicked cool camp out! Minus the SxS party, so neat to see all the tents and bikes like that. That hill climb is relentless! So many lines quick choices, lol, the talk-through and bonus round… 5:10 “bad line, fix it, ok let’s go!” Good stuff man.
Gut wrenching moment with Dave, so glad He and the AT are ok. Such a reminder that things can go sideways in a moment, good thing a few guys were around.
Great episode, everyone did awesome, super fun to watch. Cheers buddy, hope you’re healing well!

Such great memories man. And yes, the hill climb never seems to end when you're in the middle of it. More tricky terrain around every corner.
Dave's crash was pure rough luck though. There was a hill section of fist sized rock that was really tricky l. Brad and I were flying through it, challenging ourselves to keep up with the lighter bikes. But the AT got on the wrong angle with too much throttle. All 1100 ccs sent it into the woods.

@@IslandADV I’ll bet Dave (and you guys) will remember that trip a while and share those stories at the next campfires!

you got the skills....personally the biggest thing I had to get used to was the torque....keep the momentum and let the bike climb ....don't need to pin the throttle....the bike will pull a house with the traction....my last big bike was 2 stroke and you needed to pin it to get any torque out of it, then you had to much speed. Ride a KLR like a big trials bike. I know what you mean about the island comfort zone....no rocks to worry about. great ride brother.

Momentum is key for sure and the torque is noticeable on the climb a lot. I kind of imagine it like driving my old 3 Ton GMC TopKick. That bad boy had 10 gears and there was always a super steep hill to get back to the shop at the end of the day. The secret was to find that perfect gear and crawl.

Sheesh. With that hill clumb after leaving your beach campsite, I was peg-weighting along with yiu all the way up that hill. Nice work ! Too bad for the fellow rider on the Africa Twin. Glad he wasn’t too nicked up fr his fall. Thx for sharing ! 👍🏽

That climb out is so fun. Way steeper than it looks on video, so you need to pick your lines just right. It changes every year with spring washout too. But that keeps it interesting.
When I was a little kid, we made it down in our Dodge Neon, lol. That old sedan wouldn't stand a chance these days.

Quite the adventure! Climb looked tough and amazing! Sorry to hear about your pal’s crash. Bike looked pretty jacked. KLR love from Seattle! 🤘

It was a highlight from the summer for sure. Good folks, good rides, great weather. And yeah, I felt terrible for Dave. Nothing ruins a good trip like sending the bike into a tree with a handful of throttle. But he's good. The bike is back up and running. The adventure continues. Cheers.

Great footage as usual ! Too bad about Dave's bike but its better to have a bent bike then a bent person ... hope he recovers well !

Thanks! Yes Dave is hard fella to keep down. His bike is already back in shape and so is he. There were two 1100 cc Africa Twins keeping pace with the lighter enduros on this trip and I was amazed and impressed with how well they tackled all the tricky terrain we saw.

Great video as always. What a great adventure this was. It was a good groupd of people and the weather was perfect. I love a good bond fire as well.
The SxS Disco Mobile was something else. Ot was mostly entertaining...lol
I had also checked with Dave to make sure he was fine driving back to Costco. I "escorted" him to the main road and ensured he wasn't just riding in adrenaline. I am glad he's ok now, I never lime to see an injured fellow rider.
Thank you so much for joining is and bringing some friends along. It was an absolute blast!

hope Dave is doing well. that ride to the costco meetup probably felt like an eternity. i was following along with your call outs on the hill climb out! i must remember to breathe. i finally relaxed when we hit the top. good run. thanks.

I was really worried about him. I couldn't wait to get out of the woods and on the road to meetup with him and just make sure there were no serious injuries. But he was fine, all things considered. I think he even took the Africa Twin on a journey to New Hampshire this fall.

Where is this hill? It's hard to tell on youtube, but what is the grade?

    • @IslandADV
      @IslandADV  5 месяцев назад

This is the hill climb out of Martin Head. Technically it's called Goose Creek Road. The grade tricky to say the least. Imagine riding your bike straight down a ski hill (black diamond), then navigating it back up again.
