new player here nervous for the war within cuz i just likely wont understand the story which is sad cuz i enjoy the gameplay so much

We want TBC classic back !!!

I see two viable options: 1. Vanilla > TBC > Wrath on 3 year cycles 2. TBC era with an accompanying seasonal server after the first year. At the end of each season, your toons get transferred to era and a new fresh would launch. The same would apply with a Wrath client, but I would stagger the launch and content releases so that players can play both and not suffer a content drought. I would prefer option 1 because I think it is healthy to have separation. Absence makes the heart grow fonder; familiarity breeds contempt is a phrase that I believe applies to me in this scenario. But everyone is different, and I don't think forcing that view onto other players is the right thing to do. I would honestly be happy with either one!

i wanna play wrath

Shadowlands broke me, the Jailer reveal was just so horrible. Dragonflight was the first expansion ever I didn’t play a second, instead dedicating all my free time to Wrath. Now that Wrath is over and I am unsubbed, I have still yet to buy the preorder. Not sure if I can bring myself to trust Blizzard and the cash they threw at Metzen, and invest for the next THREE expansions to get a satisfying payoff.

I think WoW players need to get used to the fact this isn't 2004 or 2010 or 2016 even. There are far more MMOs and online style games out there to cater to very specific niches. I wouldn't mind if they just cycle between seasonal experimental servers and have a baseline of vanilla > tbc > wrath as their main classic rotation because I already have other MMOs and games for what Classic doesn't offer. I don't need Classic to change too drastically and I won't play retail because I think other MMOs are superior at the things retail fails at (namely storytelling). The bubble's burst and WoW is less a lifestyle and more of a vacation retirement home to scratch a specific itch.

Cata is NOT classic.

I loved classic and BC but I quit when classic wrath started. I began playing wow in wrath. its not a bad expansion but people massively overplay how good it was. It had its highs and lows but its so overrated. I really wanted a classic + kind of development. To bad it doesn't look like we will get that.

TBC is by far the best version of wow. It is the Classic + that everyone wants but does not realize that we had it all along

im glad classic exists, purely so the people who complain about everything that isnt vanilla can SHUT THE FUCK UP and play their dated game and leave us in peace. sadly most classic players still feel the need to claim only THEIR wow is fun and everyone else is wrong. im glad you like the old stuff, but some people dont and thats ok.

I quit classic when cata was announced. It felt pointless to keep going with such a miserable expansion coming. + or era servers. No point with going forward with classic. It’s done

They shouldn't have made WOTLK classic honestly. Then when we hear SOD is basically gonna be wow classic+. We're not excited. It's poorly optimized, there's not enough to make you want to play it as a stand alone.

Retail should have died a decade ago, but its player base are some of the cash friendly whales gaming has seen for a long time. Vanilla Era is the only version worth playing.

I’d love for them to do a rotation of servers every 4-5 years. Basically release fresh vanilla servers -> TBC 1.5yr later -> TLK 1.5 yr later -> restart. And at the end of each expansion, you get the choice between continuing to the next expansion or moving to the 2-3 permanent era servers per xpac. I believe this would be the good middle ground. I’d love to redo TBC personally, but I would prefer to redo it after experiencing vanilla again, otherwise it would feel odd to just skip the old world alltogether after pexing (as if you missed a part of your journey), and the era servers have such an advanced state that it’s tough to get in as a new player.

what blizz should do but likely wont as its the hardest thing: extend the season of discovery format to all other subsequent expansion while preseving the classic feel of the game. this would entail making large modifications to the subsequent expansions

1 pve 1 pvp server for vanilla, wotlk, tbc. Easy. Nonr of this srasonal crap. Past wrath, it isnt classic Not that hard

I think Wow can basically be divided into three eras, classic comprising of Vanilla, TBC, Wrath. While each expansion did bring some changes towards the retail landscape, the world feel was mostly kept although Wrath was much more endgame/streamlined. The middle expansions Cata, MoP, and WoD, are really the downfall of the leveling "alive world" with much more focus on endgame and other gamey systems with major changes to talent progression etc. And finally Legion onwards represents Retail with M+ and other very retail systems. That being said from a nostalgia point of view it only makes sense to extend classic to MoP. Despite remix, getting a full fledged classic experience for one of the most underrated/underplayed expansions with some of best raids to date only makes sense. I do think a recurring vanilla - wrath seasonal server could work, but like other ladder reset systems, unless you bring in change every reset there is player population loss. When Classic first launched it was new, asked for for years, and occured right during Covid when we had ample time, were younger (less people with kids) and was extremely successful. I think Classic v2, a relaunch of Classic again starting in vanilla would have drastically less player population, longevity and engagement than the first Classic go around. A lot of us did the raids in classic, are doing the same leveling experience/raids in SoD again, and a 3rd iteration of Vanilla leveling/raiding just seems lackluster unless there are positive changes. We'll see if Classic + can do that but honestly I don't know what the answer is moving forward.

Vanilla, TBC and WoTLK should be it.

Just do the: Vanilla > TBC > Wotlk recycle. Keep vanilla era and wotlk era, where you can dump characters at the end of the cycle. Inspired from original D2 ladder > nonladder system

Vanilla, BC and Wrath should all have era servers. Save everything else for WoW Remix

WoW Classic should end in them just having Classic+ and retail one day. The playerbase is divided up 7 ways now and it makes it where you see less people in the world. Having Hardcore, SoD, WOTLK, Cata, and Retail Warmode/Nonwarmode is really going to effect how many people you see in the world long term. They could go up to Legion if they really wanted but I think it would be better for them to cut down to just a Classic+ where they develop new content with the same soul as the original game. If they do Classic+ right it would be amazing. They do need to create a lore reason for the timeline shift. Blizzard can shift patches between a classic version of the game and retail. Two versions would actually be somewhat possible for casual players to play both as well. It's just less echo chambers really.

Classic wow should have started over at vanilla after wotlk.

If you like classic then stay on classic era servers. Simple as that. Otherwise, you will just play each expansion over again.

If they had anyone with half a brain directing this they would copy Everquest timed locked progression servers and start new ones each years.

Sue me but this opinion comes from a retail player (started in WoD, yes i know), I played a character in 2019 classic until the end of wotlkc and imo. they should only focus on vanilla. The main reason being that my daily/weekly gameplay loop in tbcc and wotlkc already came pretty close to how I play retail (just with brainrot rotations), only vanilla was truly unique in that sense. I also think people who "hate" retail but play cata and mop are lost, they're crazy similar if we don't cherry pick outlier classes like rogue.

WoW is old game for old people. So my guess is they will milk any version of the game while "customers" are still alive.

I know a lot of people say that Cataclysm is when the game changed forever, and they like to group Vanilla through to Wrath as the "Classic Trilogy", but honestly after playing through it all since 2019 I have to say - Wrath seemed to make the most substantial philosophy change. Wrath is considerably closer to Cataclysm than it is to TBC. I think the only real arguments to be made for the "Classic Trilogy" are that it finished off the Warcraft 3 story, and the old world remained unchanged (which hardly matters nowadays since people either fly through or skip the levelling with RDF, in-game boosts or paid character boosts). If you liked Wrath, then you'll probably like Cataclysm. Cataclysm is just a victim of it's bad reputation.

While I agree classic era ends at wrath, I would say private server metrics demonstrate there is indeed a demand for Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria servers, I would continue through through WOD and end at the Legion servers, I think some revamping or adding of content to WOD to incentivize people who criticized it on it's release to give it a chance appeals to me personally, but I understand many might be apposed and want it to remain just as it was on it's release. I for one am greatly looking forward to the classic MOP release, and I hope that blizzard adds expansion era servers to TBC wrath and beyond as they continue with the classic project.

It should have ended at Wrath. "Classic Cata" sounds like an oxymoron. Maybe it's just semantics, but Cata and beyond should have been "remixes." Hoping for some original trilogy rolling progression servers soon

I hope not... I don't know how on Earth would the devs be justifying MoD as "classic" in any metric sense? Vanilla, BC and WotLK are what most people consider the classic trilogy. I personally like Cataclysm, the Wargen are my favourite race and I love Gilneas' lore, so I'm happy that they brought in "classic cata" but for me that's the hard line dividing classic and modern. I personally really hate the kunfu panda race, to me it looks ridiculous and breaks immersion. If they bring "classic" MoP I might have to stick to vanilla classic and miss out on my favourite race....

I never finished bt mount hyjal or even tried unwell and i still believe burning crusade was the absolute peak of gaming across all categories.

Been a classic andy for a while and dabbling in dragonflight was my first venture into retail in a long time, genuinely looking forward to the war within, warbands especially are very appealing to me as I've enjoyed leveling toons through chromie time to level through some expansions i missed in their initial release, retail gameplay has been appealing to me more and more as it's enjoyable to delve into the more ability rich classes in retail, definitely excited to see what this upcoming expansion has to offer

Cata classic is fantastic imo. What a relief i can play wow again finally when it was fun. Wrath to legion were all amazing.

honestly i laughed at the people not having ashes/invincible then got hurt at no mimirons :( 300 attempts deep :(
