Black Flame Epoxy Table, My Best Work Yet
As a beginner woodworker I finally built up the courage to make my first epoxy river table. I think I am starting to break out of the weekend DIY woodworker label to something a bit more professional. This is my most expensive project to date, and I definitely had to use a lot of techniques and tricks to get this far.
I used a slab from a 150 year old sycamore tree to create this table with a black flame pattern. I plan to sell this piece for around a 1000$.
Enjoy,

The Beggars Epoxy Table, Thrifty Woodworking 101

This is how I've built an epoxy table for under 150$. I am a beginner woodworker so I have to save every penny, hope I could teach you something about the design process when you are broke haha. I used a really dark epoxy with this charred wood, I am pretty proud of myself for sticking with this project, as it was quite difficult. Making Techwear on a 100 year old Sewing Machine

I make a modern fashion trend inspired tactical front-pack with my 100 year old singer sewing machine. What It Takes To Use A 1920s Singer Sewing Machine

The restoration of this antique 1900s Singer sewing machine was an awesome journey. Learning this unique skill has been a challenge, sewing with a treadle is definitely a difficult process, especially catching the rhythm! Nice machine. Hopefully, you've done some research on how to treadle. You are not demonstrating the right technique in this video. It's not difficult. Just requires practice to get used to. You need to use both of your feet. That is why the foot treadle is wide. Right foot forward and left food slightly back. Provides control.

Only thing i would say when working with any wood make sure your melamine is clean, some times mold release makes it easier to salvage but old melamine with do you in and set you back days. Hey man, amazing work! So just a tip I see cam from blacktail and maybe another person mix some acetone into the epoxy to thin it out, you can also use deep poor epoxy, to fill those tiny cracks so you don't have to use the dremel to carve them out, the wood will readily soak up the thinned out epoxy.

    I’m with you on keeping the antique sewing machine, personally I bought first a modern computerized singer sewing machine and it was a disaster, I would get error codes every 10 minutes, internal plastic parts would break away , even spare parts that I was keeping to replace them when they broke down, broke by themselves 😮 then my ant gave me a Franklin sewing machine which is amazing, I recently bought a singer 66 on a bentwood case and I love it is 105 years old and works even better than any other computerized machine I’ve owed, vintage were created to outlast its creators and owners which is amazing ❤

    It looks like the thread tensions are a bit balanced tighter on the needle than the bobbin side. It might be because of using the paper. The stitches should intertwine between the two layers being sewn.

    Love the video, but I almost choked on my tea when you removed the machine hinges from the table top first!!! There are set screws that can simply be loosened underneath the machine allowing the machine to be lifted out first. Then unscrew the hinges from the table top. This was an extremely lucky removal.

    Nice work and its good to see that the vintage machines can handle leather. One comment i have is that on the top band you are not using a French seam, you are topstitching. French seam is sewn with the wrong sides together first, then part of seam allowance is trimmed off, the work is then turned inside out, and the seam stitched with right sides together. This encloses the raw egdes of fabric inside a 'tube' created by the two seam lines. This technique is used mainly in haute Couture, and wirh fine fabrics that are prone to fraying, such as chiffon and satin...

    I'm currently doing my first ever project and it's a table just like this tho different shape of course. A live edge cookie any how. I used a whisk from a hand held electronic cake mixer inthe drill to mix my Epoxy for my deep pour (my project has a huge hole/lake in the middle that is full of resin) it never crossed my mind to fill it with other wood to save on Epoxy. The cost of tool and Epoxy has soon added up this turned out to be so expensive because I have nothing I'm not a wood worker. My table won't be perfectly flat because I don't have the router and sled. It a bit of an ugly piece at the moment but I hope I can make it work

    • @hefestodesign
      @hefestodesign Месяц назад

      Yeah It is a struggle for sure, I invested about 2000$ into tools, and built a lot of jigs. A router sled is a must have in my opinion, with it you can turn junk wood into something salvageable. IMO the second most important thing is a belt sander. Cake mixer is lowkey genius. Filling it with wood only works if the epoxy is non transparent, so It kinda limits your options.

    My grandfather was a sewing machine repairman. he left several working copies of 8 in working order and 10 more that he did not have time to put in order . the oldest one is 170 years old , it is not working . the oldest worker was born in 1890 . I was very tired when I tried to put it in working order after 30 years of downtime and considering that my grandfather did not pass on his skills. I can sew on them and can carry out basic repairs, but I can't compare with the master.

    I use a treadle for most of my sewing. One thing you might try is a different foot position. I use a heel/toe position instead of side by side. One to push, the other to keep time. I have better control of starting and stopping. I love your work and like the comparison of the machines. I actually traded my singer heavy-duty machine in for a vintage. I didn't like fighting the handwheel.
