Hello Creatures! I'm a dad who's new to DMing in D&D. I'm new to D&D altogether for that matter! I have taken upon me to DM two different groups. One group is my son and my friend. The other group is for a War Veterans Association, so it's a bunch of US Army Vets. I have been having a blast so far. This channel is to bring you along on my journey of becoming the DM I am meant to be! Join me for a good and schwetty time!

If they watch this they're gonna know not to eat the seeds. 😏
I told them not to until our campaign is over since I discuss spoilers
I'm brand new to DMing and DnD. I'm writing a homebrew for my family using the players handbook, DM guide, monster manual, and Tasha's cauldron. You're inspiring me to make progress videos when I finish writing my campaign and start playing it
Yes! I would love to hear about it! I'm currently working on a simpler version to play with my even younger kids!(3 and 5)
@@Noob_DnD_Dad That's so cute. I have a one-year-old and I'm going to introduce him to it when he's 3 as well.
Re: new 2024 books, they're not a complete rule re-write but a rules update, so for instance the new Monster Manual (Feb. 2025) will work with the 2014 PHB and DMG. I'm not sure they're going to be simpler, though. For instance they're going to introduce using feats at lvl 1. I'm not sure how this would work adding the rules to an existing campaing - do you just give the PCs an extra feat as if they'd always had it. Anyway, for 5e based games from this point on I'll be using Tales of the Valiant rather than D&D 5e 2024, but that's for other reasons .
I guess what I took away from the wotc intro to the new books video, is that they will be more simply laid out, so it is easier to navigate them, even if the additions do not make the game easier. Thank you!
@@Noob_DnD_Dad I absolutely believe that. Especially the DMG which they admit was rushed in 2014
Dude I love your updates. Hooah.
Thank you so much! Your comments are very encouraging to me.

Good session's 👍. For dual wielding, it uses the bonus action for the extra att and if you are Not skilled in dual wielding the second attack is at disadvantage and if you're not proficient in the weapon they are dual wielding they would not use the proficiency bonus on the role, and I might also add a -2 to -5 dependent on the weapon they're un-proficient in, either on the attack roll or as a bonus to the AC of the creature their attacking, depending on the players ability to do maths,😂,that's just something I do. As far as for your scroll question, 'I' now keep it very simple, I don't bother with them having to roll a skill check to see if they learn a Spell, after all the other classes don't have to roll to learn their new abilities or skills so I just say it's 10GP cost to scribe a cantrip scroll into your spell book and 25 GP x by the level of the spell on a scroll to cover magical material cost. As I don't think it's a fun part of the game... Oh you didn't get the roll.. oh well you didn't copy that spell and the materials is now expended... Not fun. As for people wanting to join in for one or two sessions, if they're used to creating characters I'd let them create characters up but if they're not I would have ones ready for them to run, simplified characters with the basics needed info. Kinda like a monster stat block but on a character sheet. Unless you want to go into greater detail. But that just my take on it.
Nice! Thank you very much for your input and feedback. Also thanks for watching! See you soon.
Hey NoobDndDad, remember me?
Hi, yes! You like Pathfinder. Welcome back.
My d20 i made is post apocalypse/ high fantasy. I treat each session like a drop in and out one shot as if they were in a b movie. That way they can reuse a character into different endgames or character ending scenarios if they prefer that to switching to a new character. This is due to each one shot or campaign is like a story told at a bar or tall tale while camping. It also allows for more ridiculous things to happen in the story with an in world explanation
My plan, although i haven't had to implement it yet, is to treat that character like they are there but not part of the active narrative. In combat: While the players who are present are fighting the enemies, the missing players character will have fought some enemies "off screen" In non-combat: standing off to the side, flirting at the bar, shopping for trinkets, scouting ahead, trailing behind.. etc. whatever makes sense for the activities the other players are doing.
I like it! All good ideas. Thank you for sharing and for watching!
I love the guarding the horses thing. I honestly just kinda make something up each time. Like I had an Aarakocra player fly off after something shiny, I had a cleric disappear and laser reappear in a flash of holy light. I was hopping that I’d think of some way to tie these all together but nothing has come to me so far
I love the random events too! Thanks for watching!
As far as duel wilding goes on page 195 of the players handbook it has the stipulations but anyone can fight with two weapons they do not get to add the ability modifier to the off hand attack or bonus action attack. Unless they have the ability of a fighter pg. 72 or the feat on pg. 165. Now you are correct scrolls are expendable and in the Dungeon Masters Guide on pg 200 and 201 it says the copier needs to succeed on an Arcana check with a DC of 10 +the spells level. In the case of a cantrip that would be a plus zero. If they succeed it is copied and if not it is not copied but in either case the scroll is destroyed.
I'm glad I found your page! I've always wanted to play D&D, but never have. Now I am DMing for my 4 sons (29,28,15, and 13) and learning as I go. I'm also an army vet. Funny you should mention the sheath, i was thinking of adding one to my game as well and have it grant an additional 1D4 damage on it first strike in combat. I call it "sheath of sharpness."
Hey! Glad you're here! That's so cool you are DMing for your sons! Thanks for sharing.

Xanth! that's awesome. Brings me back to reading those novels as a teen.
Wo is he from somewhere? Is this an Easter egg!? That's just what the manual called him. That's so cool.
@@Noob_DnD_Dad Oh there was a series of fantasy novels in the early 80s set in the world of Xanth, by Piers Anthony. It's a somewhat funny series, Xanth is based on Florida (at least geographically) and based entirely on puns. One of the early books was named Centaur Aisle
@shadomain7918 amazing. Thanks for sharing
I might have to see if I can find that at my local used book store. Sounds like a good read!
“Want some pies? HeHehEheEh”
I love that you're rolling up random stuff, keep doing it! Something to keep in mind though, is the players power is going to grow faster than the module expects. So if it says "for 4 players, there are 6 monsters here", maybe do 7 or 8 to get the same level of danger. Or maybe, if theyvstart steamrolling an orc camp, just have 4 more orcs "come running back into camp from berry picking (or whatever) to see what all the noise is about". Or some such nonsense to keep the danger and stakes level with the party. Random magic items are sometimes the best! Have you given the +2 sword any kind of history or backstory? Seems like a pretty special object.
If players don't want to engage with some part of the game, I usually won't pressure the issue. Stat point increases should be taken at some ASI/Feat levels, or the PC start missing more than they should so I don't think your players are missing anything but not raking feats! Many DMs ignore spell components, many DMs like to track them. Most games fall somewhere in the middle. Just be consistent between spells and casters, whatever you decide. Identify is nice in that you have to drop 100gp to do it, so the low level party has to significantly invest in it, but the pearl isn't used up, so it's like buying a capability. I also like to put some magic items into my campaigns that identify does not work on, so they have to figure those items out the "old school" way. EDIT: clarity
In Tasha's Cauldron of Everything there are many magic items for wizards, a +1/+2/+3 Arcane Grimoire, Alchemical Compendium, Astromancy Archive, Atlas of Endless Horizons, Crystalline Chronicle, Duplicitous Manuscript, Fulminating Treatise, Heart Weaver's Primer, Libram of Souls and Flesh, Planecaller's Codex, Protective Verses. They are basically all made for a different school of magic, so if he plays one of those wizards it might be pretty cool. Btw you can google them and you'll find descriptions for the items.
Lucky for me i use a digital tabletop. We're going off the map? Ok: i expand the map, and build out as players traverse hexes. Use simple terrain-type tokens for speed and ease of use.
Ahhh....Players wanting to go off the campaign trail..... Tribore is 3 days travel away from phandalin, at least, that's basically a week round trip, without adventures, for them to get back..... a lot of things can happen in 6 to 7 days in phandalin area, While the party go off galavanting. Villages and towns can be destroyed. Favourite NPCs could have died. Survivors will be asking 'where were they when they needed them?' All because the "HERO'S" wanted to see what's over the hill. . You were lucky you have Google to look up info.
Had to go look at a map of Faerun cause I don't really remember what's east of Conyberry! For all the adventures along the Triboar trails I've had or run, we've never once been to Triboar!
Also, Descent to Avernus has Infernal War Rigs! You might could adapt some of the rules there for their little adventure wagon
You should definitely hit scenic and frontieric Triboar!
My character died here.
Waiting for their dad to come back from getting milk?
Cool video. I've never read this far in Dragons of Icespire Peak, but if I had a place in my campaign called Coneyberry, I'd definitely make an amusement park, Coneyberry Island. ;)
Nice! It's been destroyed so it's the perfect time to build one!
But she did like it, precisely because it came from a nerd like them. Even more precisely because it came from *them*. That little fact would not change the reality of their station however. Nor halt the universe's malevolent braying.

Chaining bombs together, may be a warcrime... or it is a warcrime if it happens twice...
The players were so happy with themselves!
I wanted to tell you I really enjoy your channel. I’m DMing my own first game ever. Thanks
Aw, thank you so much! Good luck and tell me how it goes!
I would have liked more details on how they defeated the ogre and orcs chasing them. Definitely a different approach than your vet group. I'm surprised they didn't fire bolt the gelatinous cube down from the ladder. The Alien model on the shelf reminded me of my homebrew Xenosaurs Rex Queen in my ongoing campaign for my players they had to overcome.
???
This is the sweetest thing ever, first of all. Second I definitely think it's great to get kids into TTGs young because it gives them a toolbox of skills most people don't get until much, much later. I really want to hear about how it goes for the littlest ones especially.
Thank you for the feedback and encouragement! I'm eager to get started
That castle on the left top corner looks like it's a castle in the sky. =) I'm curious to hear how it turns out and how the kids like it and manage to work with the system you set up for them.
When i started playing with my daughter, we began with Hero Kids, which is very simple. However, my daughter was 7 and she got pretty bored with the system pretty quickly and we moved on to real D&D. So: you might want to pick up the D&D for kids set, The Young Adventurers Collection. It has some fun images, and it breaks stuff down in a way that is pretty creative and straightforward. Additionally, I would totally get larger dice or soft squishy dice for the youngest one. That will make it less tempting to eat the dice lol My daughter is 14 and she's now running her own game for me and her father, and it's pretty awesome
I love this! Thank you for sharing! I could be making future DMs!
That’s a spell effect.
What's in the pie, how many times will you hit me, where, and with how much of your strength? Also, will you ask me this question again if you hit me?
🫣
...rolling pin please. (I like pain)
🙈
Low key though that book is so good, haven’t run it yet but looks very interesting
Good to know! Thanks

You have chosen wisely
idc how big the room is i cast fireball
Cool idea! For 3 and 5 year olds, I'd strongly recommend using the "No Thank You, Evil" game system from Monte Cook Games. It's a simple system made for all age ranges. The really cool thing is that there are a couple of different complexites for characters, so the girls could play the simpler characters and your son could play a more complex character with more choices, and the system supports all in the same game.
Thank you for the suggestion!
@@Noob_DnD_Dad i've worked with Monte Cook, and the designer is SO (edited) great with kids safety and creativity
Must be a typo here, what?
@@Noob_DnD_Dad oops, "so", not "no". sorry about that

We use feats all the time in DnD beyond. Not sure what the issue is but feats should definitely be available. Just added gift of the chromatic dragon to my character, but phb feats should all be available with no extra cost.
Interesting, I wonder what's going on? Thanks for the head up, mayhaps I'll encourage them to look for them at the next level up.
@@Noob_DnD_Dad I assume it is because you have the physical books and not digital? If you haven't also purchased the books in D&D Beyond (or at least someone in the party with a master tier subscription) they wont be accessible in D&D Beyond.
cool video, i think your game will be so cool
Thank you!
Don't judge them, they love each other

Man, that does look like that's what he's saying! "Dang, when did this get here?"
🤣exactly
This is great Also, what edition is that handbook for?
3 or 3.5 I believe
It's 3.5, that's the PHB my parents used when I was a kid
I assume your wizard's using Counterspell. Its a problem in the game. It does use the wizard's reaction for that turn, so if they use that, they can't use Shield, or take an attack of opportunity that turn. If it really gets annoying, you may have to have an opponent also have Counterspell .
The other thing to consider is converting “spells” in a monster stat block into features/actions. Lots of newer spell caster stat blocks (see Monsters of the Multiverse and books that came out after that) do exactly that so the baddie can do their one cool thing without being Counterspelled.
@njames206 ooh! Good idea!
@@Noob_DnD_Dad you can find pretty good arguments out there that Counterspell is just not great for the game. It hasn't been an issue in my games for whatever reason, but you might want to poke around for that argument and then have a talk with your crew to see how they feel. If you keep it in the game, your baddies can start arriving with it in their kit, and then it's a back and forth.
@@njames206 I love the back and forth idea!
@@Noob_DnD_Dad lol, well there you go. If the PCs can have something, so can the baddies. I understand counterspell contests get old fast, but your mileage may vary.
