We have 90 varieties of tomatoes growing in the backyard this year. Each year we test different varieties each year trying to find which varieties grow best, how they taste and any problems they might have. The big tomatoes haven't started ripening yet, but we are already taking notes. Some will make the cut and we'll grow them again, some are back again after an absence to see if we like them ...

There are many ways to support plants in a garden and over the years we have used many methods for supporting tomatoes and peppers. We have a large garden, so buying a bunch of ready made tomato cages isn't very economical, and even when we have bought them they aren't as good as what we can build on our own. One of our tried and true tomato cages is the homemade concrete wire cage . This year ...

That's a great tour! It would be so fun to grow that many different types! I just have 3 cherry tomato plants this year, but we will still have some to give away to friends. I've got Sun Gold and Sun Orange, which I wanted to compare side by side. The flavor seems too close to tell apart, but the Sun Orange are bigger and seem like the winner so far I have had Sun Peach on my list to try but I have not tried it yet. My third for this year is an unknown red cherry that we have saved seed for quite a few years now. I think next year I will replace it with a different red or pink one. I have grown Black Cherry and Black Strawberry before and they were pretty good!

It's so, so, so much easier to get a scale and measure in grams. That way, you can measure each ingredient at once, accurately, and much more quickly. No measuring spoons or cups. Just zero out the bowl and then add however much currents. Zero out the bowl and add the same amount of sugar. Super fast, very accurate, and a lot less clean up. It's just a matter of getting familiar with the concept, but once you do, your culinary life will be much improved!

Hi! Since you love pink tomatoes: I’m not sure why I’ve not heard anyone mention “Pinky cherry” before, which I purchased from Uprising seeds. I got it as part of a cherry sampler pack for fun, and I adore adore everything about it. It is very resistant to cracking in the 3 years I’ve grown it, and it has this very unique “shiny” skin texture (not sure how to describe it) which I’ve never seen on other tomatoes. It also stays good on the vine for a while. If you trial other tomatoes next year, I’d suggest to add that one to your list if have space on it 😅

Oh man, do I feel your pain! I'm a backyard gardener who lost an entire crop of tomatoes to herbicide drift from my back fence neighbor 2 years ago. So last year after moving the bed to the opposite end of the yard, I was rewarded with a crop that included 25 pounds of beautiful San Marzano's from one plant. But now, what was shaping up to be another bumper crop appears to be lost again-this time at the hands of our condo landscapers who showed up unannounced, and sprayed a common area, just several feet from the fence where my current bed is located. Although I share your sentiment regarding a civil suit, I am still livid to the point of considering compensation from ether our condo association, the landscapers-or both. Even maintaining a backyard garden is a substantial expense of time and money for a 74 year old. Besides, at my age, every season is a bonus.

I had several that formed, and they were beautiful, but the taste was pretty "meh", I thought. Not terribly sweet, just a bit bland. I'm not growing it again this year. My surprise star last year was Etiuda! They were as orange as, well, an orange and the taste was outstanding. Super crisp, extremely sweet and a very vibrant flavor. Cement wire has 5 inches square that's great for tomorrow. for as panels and cattle panel openings are smaller that isn't as handy for tomatoes. Determinat tomatoes I prefer the horrible famous tall tomato cages. I place 4 cages space according to sizes of the plants 6 ft.T post starting with the first inside the cage and after the forth cage. Repeating this 4 cages and the T post down the length of your garden.. After your cages and T post are done. On the first T post connect a tiny steel cable passing through every cage near top and connect the last of the cable. I'm doing this for the 4th season and The 6 ft T post and cable system has been great and Mid Ohio also gets summer storms and not a problem. Craigslist you can often get the " Horrible tomato Cages" that with this system I'm finally loving my tomato cages. Positive with craiglist bargain this can be done cheaper then any other.system unless you count failure setups. This is the easiest way to train your plants keeping them off the ground

I am sorry this happened to your plants. I have learned so much this year about herbicide damage! I started all of my own tomato plants and I believe that some of them have received herbicide damage as well. Most of my suburban neighbors have lawn services, and I do as well, so there is no telling if the damage was from my service or a neighbor's. I contacted my lawn service company and they were extremely defensive about their spraying practices. They offered to get plant tissue tests done, but the tests would be at my cost if they came back negative. I decided against testing because while the damage appeared obvious, I couldn't determine the source and, like you, they couldn't replace the plants with like varieties of the same size. I also wasn't sure if the test would be effective a few weeks after exposure. In future years, I am considering keeping my plants in the house until a little later to try to avoid the main dandelion spraying season. That probably is not an option for you given the number of plants that you start. I hope you continue and I hope that this does not happen again for you.

    • @iowabackyardfarmer2952

It has been a big learning experience! Herbicide damage is much more common than even I thought. We had so many people tell us their story of previous damage to their own gardens when they came to pick up plants. It is really hard to prove where herbicide drift comes from. I've been impressed with how well some of the plants have recovered. We will see what the report says when it comes, there were lots of opportunities to be hit.

    • @larrysmac
      @larrysmac 15 дней назад

Since herbicides/pesticides do not dissipate, drift can still occur for months when they volatilize (turn to gas) in hot weather. What does that say for our kids and critters playing on summer lawns? As far as compensation from polluters, how does one place a value on a priceless labor of love?

It does seem like there was a lot of damage this year. Talking to the neighbors has been very helpful for us. Generally everyone is trying to do their best. I don't think most people even understand the risks. If its sold at the store and they are using it as the label directs they might not even be aware of the trouble it can cause.

@@iowabackyardfarmer2952 I would agree. I still cannot believe roundup is on the shelf. As for my neighbors, I have never spoken to them so confronting them would seem hasty. They are not the friendly type even though we have made attempts of saying hello. Sad. We used to have neighbors all around us that were friends.

@@t.k159 Maybe take some fresh homemade cookies to your neighbors??? While we can agree roundup has its fair share of problems, roundup is not an ingredient in dandelion sprays (it would kill the grass and likely only stunt the dandelions). The dandelion spray that caused our problems most likely have dicamba and/or 2,4-D as the active ingredients (we'll know more once the lab tests are back). Glyphosate (common trade name is Roundup) causes different symptoms than we had. The one benefit of glyphosate/Roundup is it stays where it is sprayed, whereas some formulations of 2,4-D and dicamba volatilize and move wherever the wind takes them. Best wishes for future garden success!

Same just happened to me about a month ago. What a coincidence it happened at the same time. I have jets flying over my house everyday. I thought it could have been the chemicals they put out. It could have been my neighbors not sure but it was devastating. Most of my plants are growing but not growing out of it or a good harvest. It’s crazy how on my plants the bottom limbs with leaves looked fantastic and you can see exactly the time frame it happened by the top portion of all the plants. It’s gut wrenching when you notice it happened to 90% of your tomato plants.

I'm sorry you got hit as well. It really is a gut punch. I have hopes we will still get a good harvest this year off of what we planted because of how they are growing now, but we had some a few years back that really never recovered and we waited a long time.

@@iowabackyardfarmer2952 I’m happy to say most of them have survived and are growing. The ones that have not recovered, I’m wondering if the fruits will ripen. Be a shame if not. I would suspect a lawn service over homeowner applied, because we used to deal with this issue with the next door neighbor's lawn service spraying on windy days. We showed the neighbor the damage, which mainly was to our Rose of Sharon at the property line. The neighbor weighed our 'advice' and discontinued the lawn service and we haven't had any issues since. I believe they spray to get paid and disregard windy conditions.

Trying to grow a bunch of Sugar Rush Stripey, this year. They’re supposed to taste the same as a Sugar Rush Peach, but naturally ripen to have thin Red stripes. So pretty! I’ve heard of people mostly using the Sugar Rush varieties for snacking, pickling & hot sauce. I was hoping to find out if they’re good Smoked. If it’s naturally sugary in taste, would that make a good rub for meats? Amateur here; never smoked anything in my life, but I’ll try this year. It’s a relatively new variety; I just haven’t seen anyone try to make powder or flakes with Sugar Rush…

Thank you! We could find onion bulbs at most home and garden centers. For the onion starts, Earl May usually has a good selection as well. They carried a few that we didn't have but they probably also order in their boxes from Dixondale who is the largest onion grower or somewhere like that in Texas. For some varieties I could only find seeds.

Hey neighbor! SE SD here. Growing 80 varieties plus trialing some brand new varieties via breeding projects. I do a seed giveaway on a couple of garden forums, mostly from all the varieties I don't want to grow anymore. It's hard to cull some of them, right? Love your list for 2024! Some questions/comments: 1. How does the Ruby Crush compare to the Sweet Million, Sweet Apertif and Super Sweet 100? I am doing an experiment to see which of those three does the best based on flavor, health and productivity. Might need to add Ruby Crush for next year. Side note, I make pizza sauce and cherry tomato marinara with my snack size maters. I like fiber so skins don't bother me, especially for the small batch pizza sauce. 2. I grew Candyland in a hanging basket one year. I thought the maters were too small, so not growing it again, even though the flavor was good. 3. Love that you test Brix. I did not find it directly correlated with how my palate perceived sweet on all the tomatoes, but was close for most. I added Brix to all my taste tests last year. More a fun toy to play with. 4. 14 gallon pot for large maters, sweet! I practice High Intensity spacing. Partly because I have a suburban backyard and grow everything (including grapes and fruit trees) and I like to play around and run experiments. Last year my tomatoes were 8-10 inches apart (did great) and this year 10-12 inches. I can grow for volume or variety, but not both. Variety for the win! 5. Last year my largest tomato was from the close spacing mater patch and the tomato plants set alone with 5-10 feet spacing each? Small maters. I swear, tomatoes just do what they want. 6. Hungarian Heart is a FANTASTIC tomato. They are so meaty and large! Tasty too. 7. You mentioned Hillbilly, my favorite large tomato. I grow both the regular leaf and potato leaf. Aunt Ruby's German Green (and all the other greens) are some of the best tomatoes I have tasted. 8. I tried Paul Robeson for three years, two different seed vendors. If I even got a healthy plant, the taste was bland and nothing worth noting. I think I may be the only person on the planet who doesn't like it and will never grow it again. 9. I am growing a Cherokee Purple Oxheart this year. Something new. I have a video listing my varieties (by category) but I purchased this on a whim at the Farmer's Market. I hope it makes a great oxheart because aren't oxheart tomatoes fantastic? 10. I make sauce from every size tomato. From canned or frozen tomatoes. If I don't give it away or use it, I'll preserve it. 11. Pink Tiger is my favorite small tomato. The Tiger series from Fred Hempel (rest his soul) is the best small mater series, even better than the Bumblebee series of his. I've grow pink tiger, green tiger, lucky tiger and blush tiger. Excited to find your channel! Subscribed.

Hi and thank you! It's been crazy getting everything in the garden this year. We were still planting things last night. Every year I think this is the year that i'm going to just grow a few varieties and then I end up adding more. Maybe next year. Thanks for your comments/questions. I'll try to answer them in order. 1. I can't really tell Sweet Million and Super Sweet 100 apart as far as looks and flavor. I'm growing them sisd by sid this year to see if one produces way better, but they are very similar. I haven't grown Sweet Apertif yet, maybe one to try next time. Ruby Crush is a grape and I think it tastes sweeter than the other two. It was vey productive for me, nice fruit, good flavor, no problems with splitting. We have 36 varieties of the small tomatoes this year so I need to find a plan for them. I will donate a lot of them, but I was also thinking I could juice them and make a great tomato juice. Most of them are so sweet. Then I wouldn't have to worry about the skins either. 2. Our Candyland red currant is huge and even though the fruits are so small they are really sweet, and there are a lot of them. I foresee that picking them will be a job this summer. Still working out what to do with all the tiny tomatoes. I have the Candyland Red, Gold Rush Currant, White Currant and Spoon tomato all growing this year. 3. I agree with you on testing Brix. It will be fun to see where everything lands. 4. I love the high intensity spacing. When our main garden did not have so much shade we could string up tomatoes 9 inches apart. I too love the variety, and even though each plant had a little less fruit, having that many plants meant we still had a ton of tomatoes! Since like you I'm working with the limitations of a suburban lot most of my tomatoes this year are in containers. Sounds like our gardens are very similar! 5. Tomatoes do seem to do what they want. Several times I have tried to trellis different tomatoes. Some really like it, others do not. I'm learning to listen better to what they need than try to make them do what I want. 6. Hungarian Heart is one we sell that has a fan club. It is all the things you said. most paste tomatoes don't have great flavor amd they are kind of dry. This one manages to be delious, juicy and meaty all at the same time. Great for making sauces. 7. Hillbilly is my brother's favorite! I have not had really good luck with growing it myself, but I should give it another try. Lots of good flavor reviews. I like the greens too. The first time I tried them my brain was just expecting unripe tomato flavor, but if you close your eyes and just taste them its amazing! 8. I know Paul Robeson has a fan club too. It's fun to see what everyones different favorites are. The conditions they are grown in can make a flavor difference too. We lost most of my black tomatoes due to herbicide drift damage earlier this year, so I won't have this one in the garden this time but we are growing a few dwarf tomatoes like Chocolate Lightning and Tasmanian Chocolate, and Maralinga which is reported to have great flavor. We'll see how they do! 9. I love the oxheart tomatoes. I hadn't heard of the Purple Cherokee oxheart. Pause while I look it up and add it to my growing tomato list :). I hope it tirns out great! 10. I usually throw all the tomatoes together when I make sauce too. All those flavors are amazing. 11. I need to try the tiger series. I haven't tried any of those yet! Thanks for taking the time to share your insights and suggestions! I think your garden sounds amazing!
