    Oh that is so awful for you guys! I am very impressed with your knowledge of it all and you’re not selling any affected plants, or trying to pass it off. Thank you for being such solid business people. I just realized my neighbor uses a lawn service and I just planted tomatoes on that end of the garden this year. Nothing like your loss, but, I will now be able to understand if this does happen, which could so easily. They work fast and spray in a sweeping motion as wide as they can to be efficient. I’m going to be researching drift, and how far that can go and affect plantings.

    That’s heartbreaking! Sorry that happened. Glad the other plants are OK.

    I've been there - from a neighbor that used a 'lawn service' that has 'Tru' in the name and like your plants, some were only affected slightly, and seemed to recover, but the yield was less than unaffected plants.

    Same just happened to me about a month ago. What a coincidence it happened at the same time. I have jets flying over my house everyday. I thought it could have been the chemicals they put out. It could have been my neighbors not sure but it was devastating. Most of my plants are growing but not growing out of it or a good harvest. It’s crazy how on my plants the bottom limbs with leaves looked fantastic and you can see exactly the time frame it happened by the top portion of all the plants. It’s gut wrenching when you notice it happened to 90% of your tomato plants.

      I'm sorry you got hit as well. It really is a gut punch. I have hopes we will still get a good harvest this year off of what we planted because of how they are growing now, but we had some a few years back that really never recovered and we waited a long time.

      @@iowabackyardfarmer2952 I’m happy to say most of them have survived and are growing. The ones that have not recovered, I’m wondering if the fruits will ripen. Be a shame if not. I have been gardening now for a few years, not a single time did I encounter this. What has made this year so different that so many people are getting affected by it?

    That is so upsetting! I’m so sorry. Spraying has big big consequences! I wish everyone would stop to think before ever spraying weeds or pests. So sorry!!!

    Awe so sorry to hear this. You are the second person with a similar post today. Heartbreaking.

    Arg. That so frustrating! I have really grown to hate the lawn and “weed” section of the hardware stores.

    Wow, I'm sorry to hear that! That has got to be so disappointing! Is there any possibility of saving suckers from those plants to root, or is the whole plant done? I have seen curling on random tomato plants before, but never know for sure what causes it.

    • @iowabackyardfarmer2952
      @iowabackyardfarmer2952  5 месяцев назад +1

      Since the herbicides affect the new growth which includes growth from the suckers this wouldn’t work. Most of our plants were only very lightly hit and have a chance to grow out of it. Those that were harder hit are not worth saving and it is best to just start over.

    That happened to me last year with all of my tomatoes. Did they grow and I got a good harvest. Harvest was late. I’m so sorry you are going through this.

      We’ve dealt with it as well. Usually just a delayed harvest. But don’t feel good about selling plants with damage. :-(

    I have seen some sterility after 2-4 D even if they grow out.

    2-4 D or dicamba?

    • @iowabackyardfarmer2952
      @iowabackyardfarmer2952  5 месяцев назад

      We’re not sure. The symptoms look more resemble Dicamba and you know that doesn’t like to stay where it is sprayed.

    People need to stop spraying their weeds on windy days! It causes a lot more damage than they think

    • @iowabackyardfarmer2952
      @iowabackyardfarmer2952  5 месяцев назад +2

      It doesn’t even have to be windy, that is what is frustrating. Even good responsible people doing their best can run into trouble. 2-4D and Dicamba which are common broadleaf herbicides are volatile and easily evaporate from liquid spray to gas that can be carried on the breeze. A nice calm day in the spring or fall might cause trouble too. If there is an inversion where the cold air stays close to the ground the spray can creep along like fog to unintended locations. If you spray hard surfaces like rocks you increase your chances of volatilization in higher temperatures. If your sprayer is set to a really fine mist for great coverage you also are going to have finer particles that can more easily be carried away in the breeze.
