The last few years have allowed me to learn many new skills. Woodworking was new to me but then I bought a house (and a table saw). Two years later and I'm pleased with where my frame making skills have progressed.

I was shipped off to the land of oil and gas (Estevan, Saskatchewan) for a work trip for the day. I figured I would bring out a few cameras for my scenic drive home, including my Pentax 6x7, which I haven't shot in over a year. Join me on my first vlog in quite some time and enjoy the fine summer day we had in Saskatchewan that day.

A week in Colorado during the peak autumnal color display was a trip I’ll never forget. Enjoy the footage from an adventure with stunning vistas, breathtaking foliage displays, and the charm of 8mm film. Shot with the Nizo S560 as well as the Canon 310XL, with both Vision3 500T and the lower speed 50D. These cartridges were processed and transferred at Niagara Custom Lab in Toronto.

I took a little trip for a couple of days north to Narrow Hills Provincial Park in northern Saskatchewan. I've never been to this area before and it was easy to see why this stunning place is a favourite among many of my friends.

This is my fifth cartridge of Super 8, shooting some of Kodak's prized Vision3 500T. This reel is certainly a mishmash of short clips of various outings from December 2020, including one of the best sunrises I've seen in quite some time. Shot with Nizo S560. Processed and transferred by the capable hands of Niagara Custom Lab.

Removing Remjet from Motion Picture Film
Nice work work busting out what appears to be an ultra-vintage anamorphic!
Mr. Do It All Yourself
Absolutely gorgeous! Love the look and feel of Super 8.
Thanks so much. Same here!
Get it in ya!
Been going there for 50 yrs., truly gods land
It easily earned a spot in my favourite places in Saskatchewan.
Did you have the film scanned at 4K? This looks really good for 8mm or are you very skilled with cameras?
This was just the standard 1080p scan. I like to think I am skilled but there really isn't much to shooting this one, just pull the trigger, once the aperture is set. I did spent a little time colour grading the footage which I think makes it stand out more. Thanks for stopping by.
While the shown concoction will work, it does not remove all the remjet before development, which is the preferred situation. A more effective remjet removal solution is: Water 100F / 500ml Borax, decah. / 20g (Crystal, like 20-Mule Team) Sodium Sulfate, anh. / 100g (source chemical supply; cheap) Sodium Hydroxide / 1g (supermarket lye) Use at 100F. Soak and agitate in solution for 10 to 30 seconds, then wash several times with serious agitation until water runs clear when dumped. The solution can be reused until its volume needs to be topped off, as there is no consumption of the chemicals. Since some remjet will come off in the removal solution, just filter it though a drip coffee filter to remove that grit when the solution looks contaminated. Remjet is just powdered carbon glued on the base side of the film. This alkaline removal solution quickly dissolves the glue which binds it to the film. I'd still give the film a wipe after final wash and before using Photoflo, but you will find that nearly all the remjet was initially removed. This will leave less loose remjet to contaminate your C-41 developer and transfer to your next film when reused.
Nice
Those old Coleman duel fuel camp stoves are what I used as a kid camping with my dad. I bought a new in box one 10 years ago for $40 from some guy in Calgary. I use it all the time, great little stoves.
Looks like a great weekend. And that Pentax 6x7 with the 300m probably weighs more than the car 😂
he's baaaaaaaack
I wish you had shown how,you put your film into the salad spinner. Do you just take the wet film off the reel and set it in the salad spinner in a circle? Or are you leaving the film on the reel when you put it in there? I am definitely trying this ingenious trick though.
Ah, my bad. I keep it on the reels and just toss them right in there to spin. A few seconds in there and it takes off much of the water and the films dries faster for me.
@@dustinveitch2825 Thank you so much. I can’t wait to try it. Thank you for sharing your great idea! I sure appreciate it. And thank you for getting back to me!
awesome video man
nice to see you vlogging man. good one.
Thanks Basti!
🎉🎉🎉
Absolutely beautiful!
I come from a time you'll hope to avoid. The future is bleak for film my analog acquintance. The year 2036 is when they won. The Film Goblins, hellbent on ridding the world of all things analog, have won. Plunging us into a digital dystopia. I've sent this message back using my eastman temporal emulsifier. I still have a cache hidden of cinestill Cs41 and three dozen rolls of Fuji Pro 400h. Please don't try to contact me through my channel. The film goblins have a close eye on me. Prepare for the worst. God speed!
1. This footage is absolutely gorgeous and it's a video I find myself returning to frequently when I'm in the middle of shooting a roll of Tri-X and I wanna remind myself what it's gonna look like cuz I take way too long to finish anything. The cat shots are especially wonderful!! 2. What is the name of the music that's playing with it?? I'm totally obsessed with this track. <3
Thank you! I appreciate it. I can't recall what it is, it is from a stock music site!
Fantastic !!!
The sunrise at 0:50.... incredible
@@carslayer Thanks Carter. That location was basically the one big location I was real hyped for on this trip. It came out way better than I thought it would. I really want to get into 16mm but I'll really miss the internal intervalometer.
Went there every summer loved it
I was really blown away with it being my first time there. Been back a couple times since and I'll surely be back again soon.
so. I just getting into (cine) film . bought a bolex super 8 it came with some film (expired in 94) , printed a spiral made a tank .... That F remjet is F F F immovable even with F NaOH or commercial stuff. The only thig it works is just rubbing it off.. :( F!
Superb video thanks again! Do you know if the Tri-X was processed as reversal (positive) or negative?
It was processed as positive! I wasn't sure how it would come out since my camera can only read up to 160 ISO but it looks pretty good I would say.
@@dustinveitch2825 very good! The frame registration looks excellent on that camera. I am also impressed you got the exposure correct because I think it is harder to get exposure correct with Tri-X as reversal than if you process it as negative! So if you rated ISO 160 I think a little overexposure helped you. Thanks again for the beautiful video! BTW - your cat is very pretty!
This is a great video, thanks! It makes me feel much more confident about approaching my first dev-at-home :)
That's great! That is the main idea behind me sharing this video. Good luck!
sorry- was this film developed first w/ the C41 chems then you do this process?
You can do the remjet before you develop or afterwards. I prefer to do it before and always make sure to give it a good wipe after the final wash.
@@dustinveitch2825 cool
Random question… do you need to develop the sheets straightaway?
You know, I'm not entirely sure. I've always done them right away. Generally, you should develop them promptly but I suppose they might be able to sit for a little while.
I’ve scanned the deepest depths of Reddit. Haha … It seems it’s okay for a day. Also your results were incredible.
Just got a roll of this! Excited to shoot it in my Nizo 116. Did you cut a notch so that your camera would recognize this as 160asa and not 100asa? I’m also a little worried about exposure haha. I was told that 100/160 use the same notch pin, but if you cut a notch for the built in filter it will expose it as 160, similar to a 200T cartridge. Anyways, guess I’ll shoot it and see! Great video!
Looks very nice! What is the camera that you used?
Thank you! It’s the Kodak Brownie 8mm. I found it at a thrift shop for $10 and it still works very well. The best part is it doesn’t need batteries.
I took part in the One Take Super 8 event here in Victoria BC on two occasions and just this year I finally bought my own Super 8 cam.
Congrats! I've always wanted to but never got my act together to participate although I'm a big fan of the festival. One of my friends (featured in the video here) is from Vic and sometimes shoots Super 8 as well. Good luck with your new cam!
great video! I have to try this

Beautiful kitty, and you shot kitty so well.
Very cool video!
Thank you!
Wow very nice
How did you focus your lens? I would like to use an 80mm planar for IR photos, but I see no infrared markings
My wife shops every Monday so that's when I'll be able to use the salad spinner.
If anyone wants the exact Kodak formula it is as follows Water 27 to 38°C (80 to 100°F) 800 mL KODAK Anti-Calcium, No. 4 3.0 mL Sodium Carbonate (anhydrous) 58.0 g Sodium Bicarbonate (anhydrous) 19.0 g KODAK Stabilizer Additive 0.5 mL Water to make 1L pH at 25.0°C (77.0°F) 10.0 ± 0.20
Looks great!! Just bought my first cart of 500T. Did you shoot with an ND? you shoot at all at high noon?
Thank you! Nope, no ND just grip it and rip it!
The fade to the kitty omg!
Felix is the real star!
What resolution did you scan the 8mm Tri-X at? Is there any benefit to going above 2K scan?
If I had money to burn, then yeah, 4K would be great but probably overkill.
Beautiful film, Dustin! convinced me to buy the 560. One question I can't work out - do you use exposure compensation on -1 t expose for 200D film? (TriX is 200D, right?) Orf how do you do it? Thanks!
Thank you! The 50D is wild for detail for sure. For the 200D, 500T, 50D, and Tri-X (rated at 320 positive) all I did was throw it in and hope for the best. It was the Tri X that had me worried since it is a positive and has limited range. The problem with the Nizo is that it only goes up to 160 so unless I expose manually, it’ll overexpose. That being said, I don’t want to waste time metering so I just went with it! Long story short, the exposure doesn’t matter as much as you think it does.
it's sharp for super 8
I remember in my youth, Nizo and Beaulieu was the Rolls in Super 8 (Schneider optics), but very expensive and overpriced at the time for a student. The Bauer and Canons were also good, especially at the high end (814XL, 1014XL). Good video, beautiful images, the duration of the sequence shots and the framing rules are well respected.
Thank you so much. I decided on the Nizo for its time lapse capability and I’ve been enjoying it a lot. Cheers!
Nice, shots like at 1:57 did you leave out the 85 filter to get the full 500asa? is that why there's lots of blue? it's beautiful and painterly.
Thank you! You know, I’m not completely sure but I think I would have had it on Daylight. Even getting the full 500, it would need additional exposure to bring it back. Plus, I like to keep it simple. I love the flexibility of 500T.
Beautiful footage.
With good light acceptable.
