Bestie Bag and Vetiver Top from scraps
Hello everyone and thank you for joining me today, I have made a Vetiver Top from French Navy out of my scrap box, this year I am determined to make some garments using some of my scraps.
I have particularly been looking at top and shirt patterns as you can do a great deal of mix and match with a top that has many seam lines.

I also completed the Bestie bag by BF Patterns, I made the size medium, the bag is easy to construct and the outcome is a lovely bag, I used a canvas Poppy fabric purchased from the Dahlia Sewciety, I only used .5 of a metre ...

Very successful projects. I find your use of scraps in both inspiring. I've made about seven Bestie bags and given two away as presents. I've made the small, medium and large. The large is pretty big but I love it. Made it from faux leather. Perfect!
Your top looks great Deb! It doesn't look at all like it was made with scraps! I'd be certainly looking for more scraps to sew up if this is the result. The inside of the Bestie Bag would look great on the outside as well 💜
@@loispatrick2594 Thanks Lois, I will make a few bags using different fabrics on the outside, I think they look quirky and fun, Bestie Bag is a great pattern. Have a great sewing week, Deb 🪡🧵💕
hi Deb love your makes! yes I was thinking of ways to use up my scraps too this year. i just bought Vogue 1694 dress or tunic to have a go at using smaller pieces of fabric. I am also going to make some Pojagi curtains for my sewing studio - cant wait actually, got this idea from Kate at The Last Homely House. if you havent watched her she has some fabulous ideas and such a beautiful natural way also. Happy sewing and thanks again for a great video, regards Kaaren 😀
@@kaarenmatthewson8241 Thanks Kaaren, many of the Marcy Tilton Patterns use smaller pieces, that’s a great pattern. Thank you, Deb for the Zipper instruction it was very helpful. Deb where did you get the Besty Pattern from, please? I have to let you know I watch your channel mostly on my TV and I haven't worked out how to comment but I also watch from time to time my Lap Top, which would explain why I didn't answer you three weeks back so sorry, I did see the Bendigo comment and smiled to myself, my old past life, say no more! I can only comment on the Lap-Top under my sewing name which I don't even know what it is, lol! I have been watching all of your makes and proud to see you wear sleeveless, it has given me confidence to embrace. cheers from 🙂Leeanne 😊

Hi Deb Love your top and the bestie bag. I really like your top, l just brought the pattern. I have discovered when making my dress that l do love the princess seam. It looks so pretty on the body. I have all my materials to make my bestie bag when l have finished my dress and my pair of Classic Pants. You look lovely in your dress. I have looked at that pattern for a while now. Does it have good coverage with the skirt part?
@@libbybennett3067 Thanks Libby, you will love the Vetiver Top it’s really easy to fit and doesn’t use much fabric. The Elodie wrap dress does have a good size wrap so you don’t flash anyone, mine is lined so it doesn’t really fly open. Once you have finished your dress you will be free to make everything you want 😂. Have a great sewing week, Deb 🪡🧵💕
@dbdesignsandsewingaustrali5668 Thank Deb
Great makes love them both 😊😊😊
I love both the top and the bag. I have wanted the Vetiver pattern for a long time. Maybe this spring🤔. I made a Bestie bag out of leftover fabric and will definitely make more. I used a double ended zip which works very well. Happy Sewing😊. Lynne
@@SewMyTime Hi Lynne, the Vetiver Top is fabulous because it has many small pieces you can get it out of a small amount of fabric, easy to fit with the princess seams. I love the Bestie Bag, if I ever decide to make the large size I will do a double zipper. Have a great sewing week, Deb 🪡🧵💕

Your welcome, hope you can use the information in the future, Deb 🪡🧵💕
Thank you that was very helpful. Could you take some of the teeth off first or would the tape be too weak?
Hi Christine, if the zipper is plastic the teeth will be a coil so you would have to be very careful if you wanted to take teeth off to ensure you didn't start the whole zipper side unravelling, if the zipper is metal the teeth are all separate so you can take them off the tape. I hope this helps, have a great sewing week, Deb 🪡🧵💕

Hi Deb. I find that a lot of dress patterns with a v-neck button up front are too low cut for me. I just don't feel comfortable in them. I sewed up the last one I made. I have tried redrafting the neckline shape but that didn't work and on the Tilly and the Buttons Bell dress, I have taken a little out of the shoulder seams. Can you please do a video on how you adjust the neckline on a v-neck button up dress/top so that they are not so low cut? ❤
@@alisonodonnell7832 Hi Alison, it is true so many dresses and tops are very low cut, I think some of the lovely patterns are designed for a very tall person. The older we get our spine compresses from the back neck to the waist, this often causes the garment to be too long from the shoulder to the bust making it far too revealing. Love all your makes. I've just finished a Bestie bag. Had to follow a Sew Along. A tip that isn't mentioned, it would be good to reduce some on the bulk in the seams before adding the straps. the last step of top stitching I found impossible to sew through the bulk. I absolutely love the bag. It's very capacious and the pockets are excellent.
@@barbaradavie150 Thanks Barbara, I will look up the sew along, thanks for the tip on reducing the bulk, I will make sure to trim it down before adding the straps. I’m really looking forward to some bag making this year. Have a great sewing week, Deb 🪡🧵💕
Which fabric do you prefer the Abby dress in? The heavier or the lighter one? I made it in a fabric with a bit more structure and think maybe it would be better in a viscose?
@@rachelgarnsey7953 Hi Rachel, I prefer the Abby in the green very light weight viscose, but they are very different dresses due to the fabric type. I would love any dress in the very lightweight fabric as it’s like wearing nothing, not the type of dress you could wear to work, whereas in the ekko viscose you could wear it to work and it’s not see through, the green light fabric is really really casual. Great lot of makes Deb. I love the Wardrobe by Me dress on you. Love the fabric. I have had no luck with the Naya fit wise but I make the LB shirt from Paper Theory. It fits so well for me. It’s getting hot here in the Waikato NZ as well. We are hoping for some rain as it is soo dry. Looking forward to seeing what you make next.
@@jacquihooper158 Thanks Jacqui, I have never made the LB from Paper Theory, I think it is fairly similar to the Anaya from memory, can you make that one in knit or woven as well? We were hoping for some rain yesterday but it passed right over us, the tank is getting pretty empty at the moment. Have a great sewing week, Deb 🪡🧵💕
Loving all the makes especially the shape of the Tulip dress and the clever shoulder shaping. I have several Stitchbird dresses which are very similar but have the crossover pleat at the back which is a bit different. My favourite is actually in a Lady McElroy cotton lawn. Agree totally about arms - they are what they are!! I do what you suggest with Naya sleeve bands and have just finished my first Bestie 😍. You have been SO productive. Enjoy the heat while we shiver😂😂😂😂. Happy Sewing😊. Lynne
@@SewMyTime Thanks Lynne, I haven’t made the Stitchbird dress but I do like the Sewing Revival patterns so I’ll have to have a look at that one, I do love a cotton lawn, very comfortable fabric in the heat of the summer. I think the Naha is a fabulous top, but will change to bands in the round for the next one, it just looks neater. It’s 7:15 and still 37 degrees, it says it will be 35 by 8pm, sounds like a hot night 🥵, try to keep warm. Have a great sewing week, Deb 🪡🧵💕
Love them all, Deb. I also think the large back facing is very stylish. Gives the garment good structure. Keep cool!!
@@JulieJones-mi8gq Thanks Julie, I think the large facing is stylish too, reminds me of an expensive t-shirt facing. Still 37 degrees at 6pm 🥵. Have a great sewing week, Deb 🪡🧵💕
Lovely makes, Deb. Keep cool🤩
@@irenegilchrist1512 Thanks Irene, I’ll try to keep cool, it’s 5:30pm and it’s still 37 degrees 🥵. Have a great sewing week, Deb 🪡🧵💕
Great makes they all look fabulous 😊😊😊

Great makes there Deb. I’ve been making sleeveless tops too recently. Much too hot for sleeves at the moment. In fact I’m even making some shorts while I have you in the background 😊. I like your idea of using the top of a jumpsuit pattern. I have the birdie jumpsuit by Stylearc (a freebie). Might give it a go.
@@vickimaiorano5763 Thanks Vicki, I have embraced the sleeveless, you’re right it’s too hot not to. I love the Birdie jumpsuit, the armholes come up nice and high to keep all your bits in. Have a great sewing week, Deb 🪡🧵💕
Great makes. I am trying to decide about material for a jacket. A puffer fabric or just a drill.
@@leepayk-bann3489 Thanks Lee, that’s a difficult decision, how warm do you want the jacket to be? Have a great sewing week, Deb 🪡🧵💕
That looks so much neater. Very jealous that you have so many fabric shops near you. We have one near me. 😢
@@joannabatte6759 Hi Joanna, since moving to the country a few months ago all fabric shops are are least an hour away, so I mainly shop online these days😩. Have a great sewing week, Deb 🪡🧵💕
You have been busy Deb. Lovely makes. Love the shirred dress. 👏💐😀
