    Great breakdown. I primarily play pickup where we often prioritize safe play over jockeying for space, so I tend to ignore highlights like the first one where (at first glance) it just looks like they're both being a little extra "physical" due to the level of competition. You helped me see what a masterful job Raphy is doing at protecting himself in that situation while still keeping the play alive, and that's a skill you can use at any level of play.

    Caveat to this, only players with very good body control and field awareness should do this - coordination is king. Much like toes ins, its a skill players should really practice more - this is almost an essential skill in indoor and mini. In this specific example the main issue is that the player jumps blind - if you can see forwards then it minimizes a lot of the issues too. 100% agree with a previous point about most players actually catching while still on the ground and jumping - I take joy in pointing out these travels.

    Grateful for this video. How to box out in ultimate is something I've pondered for some time. I have a nasty box out from playing basketball, but I don't think it's transfers too well to ultimate (except for maybe when you're de-accelerating to grab or block a deep throw). Because basketballs are dribbled in basketball, it's way easier to keep someone boxed out all the time, so that when they actually make a significant move with the ball, you're not really changing anything. Ultimate is played at such a fast pace it's eluded me how you could run one million MPH and then just box out, but there was some good subtle stuff here in this video.

    I agree with your take here. Guys hop the disc in all the time in the pickup I play, and I've seen this happen a few times, I'm not a fan of catching and trying to hop it in when you're back is turned. When you're chasing the disc down and the end zone is before you, I think it's fine. That said, even though I enjoy jumping, hopping it in for the point has never been something I've even ever attempted; it almost feels like you're cheating, like you're not good enough to actually just make one last throw before the point is scored.

      Thanks! Canada played well and the USA despite playing so poorly on offense still had a chance. there are a lot of good Canadian players I played against for many years on the team but I still think out of 10 games this game goes to the USA most of the time... but that's why you play the game! I think this will be a wake up call to the USA federation to do a selection process of masters eligible players vs the previous year's national champions. Canada beat the US in 2008 (which was basically Sockeye), in 2012 the US survived a scare against Australia and Canada, and thus the tryout process began for 2016 to put our best foot forward on the world stage.

    Wait, so if you intentionally jump with the disc and end up out of bounds, you are allowed to bring it back in? I know that normally when your momentum carries out out of bounds you are allowed to tap it back in at the line, but in this case, he intentionally jumped to get more distance and not to halt his momentum.

    • @philvinc4

      Since he was still grounded when he made the catch, it's basically the same as running out of bounds after catching it, it just looks worse.

    • @Gameboob
      @Gameboob 10 дней назад

      It's a travel if you catch it, feet on the ground, and then jump, which is considered speeding up, not slowing down. And play resumed from where he jumped, so effectively a travel was called. Had play not stopped due to an out of bounds call, say Hibbert jumped and landed in the endzone cleanly, they would've likely called a travel, unless in the moment they thought the jump came after the catch.

    @solfeinberg8591 10 дней назад

    I think this defender should be - and probably is if he's honest - deeply ashamed of himself. Go to, attack the disc. Secure the catch. It's like not waiting for the disc when you're cutting under and giving that gung ho defender another whole second to fly in past you and get the D. Keep going to the disc until you've caught it even if you're getting negative yards, unless you somehow are able to make sure there's no defender possible. Which is unlikely you're able to do unless you can see behind you. The way I play pick up, I can sometimes stay in the lane because my defender has fucked off, but other defender's might poach or come along eventually

    If you watch a lot of these sorts of plays slowed down, you find that almost everyone jumps late; i.e. they still have their feet on the ground when they catch the disc. Would you say that ultimate players use the term "box out" differently than players of contact sports like basketball? In ultimate, a sport where initiating contact should theoretically always be a foul, how is boxing out any different than just running to where the disc is going to land before your opponent gets there?

    • @kurtegibson
      @kurtegibson 11 дней назад

      Good question, ultimate is a “non-contact” sport but there is an accepted level of contact generally. This can vary some based on country and level of play but is primarily seen only when both players are trying to go to the same space. Naturally there is ‘incidental’ contact mostly when cutting in these situations which is acceptable but on the mark, lighter contact can drastically affect the throw. But yes the term is used the same as in other sports

    • @florianpfender6459
      @florianpfender6459 11 дней назад

      Legal boxing out in Ultimate is not initiating contact, it is about legally claiming a space the opponent wants to go through. Ensuing non-incidental contact from a good box out is the opponent's foul. In most instances on hucks, it is about varying your route to the disc in a way that you still get to the disc at a good spot while taking away the best path to the disc your opponent has. One analogy would be boxing out in car racing. You are still taking a fast line through a curve, but you are deviating from the ideal line to prevent your opponent from overtaking you.

  • @Butterfliesmetamorphosis

    appreciate the vid! I've implemented a lot of the things you've taught/shown in your previous vids - i'd say the title and examples aren't really matching up - with the first example, i think it's a great example of playing through contact and though you do a good example of explaining the jr initated contact, i would chalk it down to poor receiving defence because he's effectively committing a pass interference penalty if this was football, like he doesn't even get his head up to try and locate the disc....he was playing the man, not the disc, and accelerates into hayes, and i think it's a good example of playing through contact, e.g. bracing and tucking your elbow in, as well as not extending arms which all can also come into mix when talking about boxing out technique then the second example, while conrad is better positioned to contest and there's no contact until the minor and incidental contact as they're coming down, but as you pointed out, hayes highpoints it, while a great play, i wouldn't put it down as boxing out. I think of boxing as putting your body between the disc and the defender, and holding the space where the defender might otherwise look to jump to contest/make a play, instead taking away that opportunity by your body being in the way, and be prepared to absorb contact before accelerating towards towards the disc later in it's flight path, where only you can get it because it infront of you now, and the defender is out of the play by either avoiding contact with you while trailing, or being off balance/out of position to make a play due to the contact i think boxing out is an essential tool for winning 1 on 1's in the deep game, especially if you're being guarded by a taller/longer player

    • @kurtegibson
      @kurtegibson 12 дней назад

      @Butterfliesmetamorphosis ok you got me on the second one! 🙃 I hesitated including that clip for that reason but I decided to include it because it was still a nice read and clean way of preventing the defense from gaining position (even though it was not a jostle for position).

    I went and reviewed the first catch and the subsequent foul.. the d said he was approaching and got pushed away (during the Raphy slowdown) before the follow up catch.. why wasn't a immediate call made PRIOR to the catch?.. instead of waiting for the follow-on outcome of the catch?.. is that bad etiquette? (note there was like 3 seconds on the game clock that had elapsed from the bump to the follow on catch.. if that changes any "opinion")

    • @kurtegibson
      @kurtegibson 12 дней назад

      I think he probably called foul when he felt the contact but even if he didn’t I don’t think it’s bad etiquette if he waited to say it until after it was caught. I think in the heat of the moment some people need a second to digest what happened especially if it may have seemed like a close call in their mind. I personally try to call it as soon as it happens and I think you should, that’s the ideal IMO.

      @kurtegibson 12 дней назад

      Thanks Chris! The point is that regardless of the strategy (I do believe that if they had more handler initiated movement they would have had more success moving it) those passes are high risk and it's one thing to throw them in a jam or sparingly when absolutely needed. They threw them multiple times and it's just a high risk throw especially in windy conditions.

  • @riddlemeth1s
    @riddlemeth1s 13 дней назад

    I know you are speaking to the specific strategy/this match up, and I definitely agree with your points. Another factor to consider before it even comes to this game is where different teams ended up in the draw & how games went before this match. My team heard that Japan had purposely lost to Columbia in their power pool game so that they would end of on the opposite side of bracket play from the USA. I've got no idea if this is true or not, but it was the rumor going around at the time at WUC. This is not to throw shade at Japan, they are/were an excellent team and beat each team in bracket play fair & square and earned their finals position. But I do think that this strategy could have contributed to the result. Furthermore, if you consider how many games were played & points were played, you could also possibly factor in fatigue building up over the tournament further contributing to this result. Japan played a crossover game/pre-quarters (over NZ 15-12), won their quarters (over Belgium 15-14), and won their semi-finals (over Australia 14-8). This is a total of 78 points over 3 games. The USA on the other side played *only* two games during this same span, winning both games 15-8 (Canada, GB). That's a total of 46 points played, compared to 78 for Japan. I think over the course of a tournament that plays a big part, especially in crunch time where lines typically tighten (especially for teams that are not the USA).

    • @kurtegibson
      @kurtegibson 12 дней назад

      If they purposely lost the Colombia game then their strategy apparently worked because they were able to avoid the US until the final even though they had a harder road. But personally I think with it was more of an issue with strategy vs fatigue (fully acknowledging this could have played some part).

Since you and the viewer don’t know all the player names and it’s kinda confusing when you say “this guy” not sure exactly who is it. I think it would help visually, maybe it’s because i am watching from a small screen as well

    Great Job! While in the spirit of world stage beach open division, have you reviewed the PH vs USA semi at WBUC 2015 in Dubai? That’d be a great one we’d all love to learn from you

      I haven’t seen that game. Is there something specific about that game you wanted to learn about?

    It worked but could've gone wrong. The third guy chose to cut instead of be a dump, despite the high count. I probably wouldn't want coaches to teach this. The 4th guy in the end zone was also doing nothing.. He could've just gone to the other corner to pull his defender away from the open side, preventing any poaching attempt.

    This is why I don't like deep "cuts" like this (where D has set up with inside tech so receiver just goes without making a move) unless you're just a lot faster than your defender

    1st strike was just a bit early, thrower still wasn't set to throw by the time he came open Delay that cut by 1-2 seconds = ez goal IMO

    Always appreciate the analysis. Protip for reviewing content on yt: hit Period to go 1 frame ahead, and Comma to go 1 frame back.

    Hey Kurt, one thing I've often heard is to not cut deep "in the same third" for a huck. You didn't mention this though, so just curious if you don't believe in this rule. Are deep cuts fine from anywhere in front of the thrower in your experience at the highest level of ultimate? Thanks!

    A double strike cut is hard to stop... cant imagine trying to stop a triple. I love the fact that team didnt even flinch high in the stall count, and trusted thrower enough for noone to stand behind the disc.

    Thanks for the great analysis. I agree 100% that the first cut was open and could have easily been thrown. I'm less sure about the second cut. It's hard given the vantage point, but it looks to me like the defender does a nice job of using their positioning to block the direct route to the cone. You can see from this perspective that they are almost directly between their defender and the corner, cutting off the direct path to the most dangerous space on the field. That positioning is probably what forces the player they're guarding into a more vertical cut. But because of the angle relative to thrower, that cut is less dangerous and gives the defender more time to react. At that point the defender reacts by moving straight at the cone themselves, cutting off that throwing lane. All to say: I'm not sure that throw was open or should have gone off. At 3:34 it looks like the defender is pretty much directly between the thrower and their mark and moving such that they would have had a good shot of blocking that throw. The thrower might have been able to put it out into the corner space, but the cutter would have had to react correctly, and there's a defender lurking.

      I didn't show this angle but if you watch the full game footage there is the drone footage showing the small opening for cut #2. The time stamp is 29:42 for reference. Either way, the point is that they were pressuring the up line relentlessly.
