Arm spin wrestling defence Vertushka counter
Defending the arm spin takedown can be very tricky if the opponent has a very solid grip. The best and most successful arm spin counter that I have used in competitions and sparring is the one that incorporates a lateral drop takedown followed by a cartwheel over the attacking wrestler. This counter works only if your opponent arches back when attacking. If he turns and attacks with more like an arm throw takedown, this type of counter will very likely not work.

    Nice. In nogi I do that throw from the 2on1 to a key lock. I also do it in the gi with sleeve and collar grips (Ude Gaeshi). But I like your grips. What other throws can you do with this grip set?

    • @AchillesWrestlingWorld
      @AchillesWrestlingWorld Месяц назад

      Yes I do the same takedown in the Gi ( Use Gaeshi ) or I use this variation were I cross my hands and grab my own lapels. From the key lock grip or the 2 on 1 you can basically perform most of the upper body throws we know in wrestling. Like fireman carry, arm throw, arm drag, head toss, single leg, double leg etc. It's a very versatile grip that if learned properly can be used successfully in BJJ, Wrestling etc. Don't know if you ever heard of Sergei and Anatoly Beloglazov? They are the masters of the 2 on 1. Check them out. There is still some available footage on RUclips with them teaching and showing some of their system of the 2 on 1 grip. It's proper old school wrestling at its best. Thank you

And yes I will definitely do a video on how to counter the belly grab of a failed double leg. It's a very common situation we come across in wrestling spring very often. So I can definitely cover some of those situations in my next videos. Are you using this techniques in wrestling sparring with wrestling rules or BJJ??? Gi or Nogi?? Just so I know what to focus on in terms of how to come out of that situation. Thanks

    Is the defense to bend knee and pushes into you with the shin?

    • @AchillesWrestlingWorld
      @AchillesWrestlingWorld 3 месяца назад

      If they get in with a very clean shot and they catch the boot properly it's tricky to defend because of the angle of the knee. But yes if you drive the knee forward into their neck and push the knee all the way down to the floor it stops them just enough so they don't score straight away. Then you can put a wizard in and from there you can work to release the boot/ ankle grip etc. This is just one way of addressing it. Hope it helps. Thanks for watching.

    Don't want to try moves that require me to give my opponent double underhooks. I would be better off fighting out of the underhooks than trying this.

    • @AchillesWrestlingWorld
      @AchillesWrestlingWorld 3 месяца назад

      But that’s the idea behind it. What are you going to do if you somehow you end up there?? Become pasive, try to disengage and step back creating space?? That would make you more vulnerable and open to leg attacks. You have to be well rounded and comfortable with the upper body attacks so you are in a position to protect your legs. Plus all bouts start on the feet. And most points get scored there. Don’t just dismiss it. Try to give it a go and make it part of your game. Promis will pay dividends down the line. 🙏

    • @sillyarms8493
      @sillyarms8493 3 месяца назад

      @@AchillesWrestlingWorld I agree it has its place. We called this a salto, I've done it in matches. It is best for last min desperation. It would be better to maintain position and never give away the underhooks. Once the underhooks are in I think you should fight for head position and shrug out of the far side hook.

    • @AchillesWrestlingWorld
      @AchillesWrestlingWorld 3 месяца назад

      @@sillyarms8493 Absolutely. That’s why in the video, I mentioned how someone may end up in that situation . The attacking wrestler doesn’t place the underhooks properly, and that’s when he exposes himself to being countered with this move. And I agree. Even I would first try to avoid the underhooks. And If they somehow manage to place them in and I can’t recover, that’s when I would try to execute this move as a last option. Thanks for your input 🫡

    • @AchillesWrestlingWorld
      @AchillesWrestlingWorld 4 месяца назад

      This variation would work better later in the bout when your opponent will be tiered and his posture will be compromised. Standing slightly higher up with his chest. So it would be easier to get to his legs and hips. But like every double leg takedown, or like most takedowns in wrestling they do require you to use your hips and lower back and core muscles. Hope this helps

      It work very well and it's safe. I use the same variation with the knee down when I teach the arm throw, head throw etc. When we do high speed drilling in practice we always put the knee down as it's less ''painful'' for the person being thrown and lowers the chances of picking up an injury. Thanks for the video. This seems very similar to Sumi Gaeshi. Is there anything that makes you prefer using this counter where the you hook the leg as apposed to Sumi Gaeshi where the defending leg is used to lift your partner?

    • @AchillesWrestlingWorld
      @AchillesWrestlingWorld 4 месяца назад

      Absolutely! This is actually a variation of Sumi Gaeshi. In wrestling, we often utilize this variation more because we can grab the legs, unlike in Judo where leg grabs are restricted. By “hooking” the leg, our base becomes a bit more stable, allowing us to counter the attack and buy some time. While countering your opponent, you can either maintain the leg hook for a throw or transition it into a Sumi Gaeshi for the throw. I hope this answers your question ! 🫡
