By rewatching the summaries of Ruyi and Yanxi Palace, I think I can better appreciate the Emperor of Yanxi. Both are born conspirators and strategists who use the people under their control, but only Hong Li from Yanxi Palace does it with sincerity... in the sense that he does not deny that quality that he possesses and that is why he is so in love with Wei Yinluo, because he is his equal, because he can keep up with him. On the other hand, Ruyi's hongli is a hypocrite, he intrigues and harms his consorts and is extremely offended if they imitate or surpass him. I hate both of them , but Ruyi's seems especially hateful to me 🤣🤣🤣 especially when even though Hui confessed the whole truth he doesn't say anything to Ruyi and only takes out the bracelet...and asks her if Ruyi would betray him (when he is betraying her by not telling her that he knows the truth!)

I absolutely love the Empress in this version.

I would LOVE to see Magnificent Century from you. It’s very similar to YanWan climbing up, but this time the Emperor does like her and the main G (Mahidevran) is just a cordial relationship. Irl, Suleiman dismissed his harem after falling for Hurrem, and married her after the Dowager (Valide now) died. I would love to add extra notes after your recaps! The series gets a little messy after there was an actress change (Meryem, the original Hurrem, left due to nervous breakdowns and not being paid the same as other main characters, namely the Sultan’s actor). The change worked in their favour still as the new Hurrem is more soft spoken and portrays grief and tiredness well. The series continues into a second part after! It’s Magnificent Century: Kosem. I prefer the first one, though! Kosem was… erm. Not a nice Valide, imho. We also get crazy rivals!! Once Hurrem is up as the top G, we get YanWan 2.0, but Hurrem is more crafty than Ruyi. Sure, she loves Suleiman, but she is no angel and quite vindictive when someone takes her position away. Calculations ensue, Suleiman’s sisters are downright insane, yadayada. Irl, things were more peaceful and Hurrem was loved by the Valide and Suleiman a lot.

Fun fact: in Jia’s final scene Jia braids her hair like unmarried girls in Joseon would, further signifying her desire to be free of the cruelty of imperial harems in the next life

So at 5:00 it made sense that she trusted that doctor exactly because he was new. She probably thought that no one had gotten to him yet and that meant she could try to make him a personal doctor for her use. Going to another doctor would make it seem like she doesn't trust him and gives other doctors the chance to scheme against her. At 5:08 the emperor didn't think she did it, it was more so that she was schemed against so well in front of everyone that it would make him look like he was favoriting a concubine too much if he tried to stand up for her. Like when Zhen Huan was framed for poisoning that baby, he didn't believe she did it but couldn't stand up for her to much without looking like he is incompetent and involving himself to much in the "back garden" which is the empress's domain. And about the baby plot it is a times old trick that concubines would do. They would pretend to be pregnant for the emperors love and attention, then they would "miscarry" because of a concubine that they didn't like then the emperor would feel pity for them and shower them with more attention while punishing whomever was framed for the miscarriage. People could say she did this because Zhen Huan was getting so much attention and wasn't sharing, which was true.

Great connection. So I’m now pretty sure the Empress dowager in Legend of Yanxi palace is also Zhenhuan, correct? No wonder she took a liking to Wei Yingluo. 🤔

I watched the whole series through a couple years ago, but this last re-watch I stopped at the first astronomer scene. The Emperor is such an idiot after that point in almost all regards. So I'm watching your recaps instead! I wish YingChe had been able to stay at the hunting grounds taking care of horses the rest of his life. :/

I was so annoyed the Emperor killed Qi Ru - and at such a crucial time with 5th Prince sick and Shu pregnant! Then we were down a doctor when we needed one. Like maybe wait a minute?? Also - Hui's health was hit by the great basil seeds as well, so it was also the former Empress meddling!

Hi! Omggg, my luck is so bad cus I didn’t even realize there was a vote, or I’d have voted Magnificent century. Definitely do agree that it’s tediously long tho, but it rlly is an amazing and very entertaining show. I’d reccomend that you do a review on the first season and decide if u want to continue or not, and if u don’t, it’s fine, cus the first season is already good enough. If u do decide to do the other seasons, definitely do one season, a different show, and then the next season, or else u’ll be stuck doing this show for an entire year 😅😂. Another thing is (as I’m assuming this is ur first introduction into Ottoman history), a lot of the facts, protocols, titles, costumes, and even events are not an accurate representation of history. And some of them unfortunately detract from the story, especially cus if u go off of the show’s version of Suleiman, he appears way worse then he was in real life. The love story was actually much more amazing and awe inspiring. I rlly don’t want u to get the wrong idea of Ottoman history, especially in that era, and the modern media perspective of it doesn’t help either. But I still do rlly recommend it tho because it’s actually so amazing, and the plot and acting is top notch. If u do decide to review the show, u can lmk if u get confused abt certain things cus Ottoman politics and the harem were quite a bit different from Imperial Chinese harems, some of which the show got right and of which it didn’t. I can also help you with skipping certain scenes cus some of them are js filler or abt politics, since the story is technically abt Sultan Suleiman’s reign, but the actual interesting bits are the harem drama and harem politics. But yeah I’d love if u’d do this show the next time around cus it’s one of my favourite historical shows of all time and I love your content and reviews.
