The most unbelievable part of all this is that those girls bothered to help the headmistress. As for why they'd keep the secret, the whole thing where everybody is being punished for one person's foul-up is probably in effect here.

    Notes:
-One of the hanfu things I forgot to cover last time: there’s frequent use of the weimao/帷帽, a veiled hat which started in the Sui Dynasty as the mìlí/幂蓠, which had a body-length veil and was worn mainly by women who wanted to keep their clothes free of dust and dirt while outdoors; it was adopted from the fashion of nomadic peoples to the northwest. The lining of the mìlí was normally black, but in many C-dramas it’s white, likely for dramatic effect. The length of the veil shortened during the Tang dynasty as fashions shifted and eventually became the weimao. Both men and women wore this to shield themselves from dust and the sun, and women in particular wore veils and hats for modesty’s sake.
-IIRC, the plural of ‘rendezvous’ is just ‘rendezvous’ again, but the ‘s’ is pronounced in the plural form while silent in the singular. It’s a loanword from the French imperative ‘rendez-vous’, which means ‘show yourselves!’
-Madam Liu’s maids covering their faces and turning around at the **indecency**! of it all is hilarious.
-The tablets that the officials are holding in the court scene are 笏板/huban, which were small board-like scepters made of wood, ivory or jade. Generally, the higher-ranked officials held ones made of ivory or jade, lower-ranked officials had wood or none at all. The huban at one point served a practical purpose and was made entirely of bamboo or wood-it could be used to write on, in order to note down things one wanted to say to the Emperor or things the Emperor said to you. After paper became a thing, the huban became more ceremonial, and jade or ivory became more popular. It was used to cover one’s face so they wouldn’t be looking directly at the Emperor, which is also why many of the officials using them will look at the ground or the huban while speaking. They stopped being used during the Qing Dynasty, which is why we never see any in Yanxi or Ruyi.
-The ministers here use ‘陛下/bi xià’ to refer to the Emperor, which translates literally into ‘[waiting at the] bottom of the stairs’ and figuratively means something like ‘Your Majesty (whom I wait respectfully for)’. In the Qing Dynasty, they used ‘皇上/huang shang’, ‘Imperial Highness’, instead. Other titles were ‘天子/tian ye’, ‘Son of Heaven’, and ‘万岁爷/wansui ye’, ‘Lord of Ten Thousand Years’. Usually an emperor referred to themselves as ‘朕/zhen’, the Chinese equivalent of the royal ‘we’; they could also address their subjects using the self-deprecating ‘寡人/gua ren’ or ‘孤/gu’, both of which mean ‘the lonely/isolated one’.
-Ji Shuran is so pretty in her green outfit and her hair ornaments! It’s a shame she’s such a witch. I liked Chen Chiao-en in Queen Dugu and she’s really good here-she plays the wicked stepmother really well.
-I do feel bad for the rest of the Zhennu Hall girls-especially that one who wavered when ordered to hit Jiang Li. Hopefully they all get set free once Duke Su realizes Xue Li was lying and the salt-smuggler guy just happened to hide there because it was convenient. He seems like a decent enough guy and he’s already suspicious of ‘Jiang Li’, so the charges probably won’t stick.

for the rendez-vous i think you meant it in eng right? cuz in french the "s" is still not pronounced and the "show yourselves" is a litteral translation the actual translation would just be "appointment"

3:40 I can't believe the girls all rushed to hold the sad headmistress. If I was one of them I would be like Oh she just fainted on the ground and hit her head, how sad, oh I cannot possibly help the crazy headmistress who tortured me, I am an obedient prisoner!
Ohhh that last line, I wonder if either the didn't actually have a baby (or if the baby daddy wasn't her husband) and it was just super convenient to blame it on the hated stepdaughter. .... Man I seen way too many C dramas.

Its double trouble for the ZhenNu Girls if they reveal Fangfei’s real identity
Not only is she gonna hunt them down for ruining her revenge plans, they’re gonna get in trouble for killing a minister’s daughter (even if it was forced (and honestly I think Jiang-Dad wouldnt have been sad if his daughter that he locked up for 10 years and didnt ask about died))

    • @dramarecaps4217
      @dramarecaps4217  Месяц назад +2

But that's what I'm saying about FangFei, what power does she really have to threaten them with? If they confess to who she is, she'll be in jail/killed, no way she can track them down and get revenge or anything.
Also, would she really even want to do that? Like you're going to get revenge on a bunch of teen girls for not going to jail for you? Idk 😐
But yeah, maybe they think the consequences of participating in JiangLi's murder are just going to be much worse

Yep, Duke Su is all clued up. At her funeral, he already suspects that there is more to Xue Li’s death than meets the eye - him and the other underling tells the underling that they were being naive. The flashback to him seeing Xue Li is probably when he was investigating the family of the new top scorer, new to the capital. This meeting first piques Duke Sun’s interest in Xue Li and the novel confirms when Duke Su is first interested in Xue Li - albeit slightly different setting :) Wu Jinyan thinks of that meeting in that way too. As Duke Su deals in knowledge, he already has suspicions at the funeral of Xue Li’s fate.

A suggestion if you're taking any! Empress of the Ming - lovable characters, a fascinating mix of Palace Drama & War Politics. There is a down mid-series where many people decided to stop watching, but the absolute turnaround after this plot was worth it, and the second half of the series was just as good as the first. I recognise some of the actors in this drama to the ones in the Ming. Would LOVEEEEEEEEEEE if you gave it a go! :)

Honestly I remember that in one point of the Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace recap you said
that you know that everybody has eyes and you dont have to explain everything and I was like :
NO YOU HAVE TO EXPLAIN EVERYTHING, PLEASE DO EXPLAIN EVERYTHING,
I NEED TO HEAR EVERYTHING OR ELSE I DONT GET IT PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAASSSSSEEEEE !!!!!!
Seriously I didin't cath on half of these mini things like color of the dress that Jia had on her or looks they gave each other, so after watching your recap I rewatch these dramas with the knowlege that you provided and I understand this waaaaay moooooore.
So yes I am a moron to this mini stuff and pleeeeeease explain everything.
    I love your recaps.
I can't wait till the next one.

I mean when it comes to the jail scene where headmistress and all the girls were kept and fake jiangli coming there to told them to keep her secret 🤫 I think I think what this scene mean was see all those may not know that real jiangli is dead except the headmistress but they obviously know and recognize her face right and if even one of them say that fangfei is not real jiangli then her revenge will be pointless so I think that’s why fangfei was threatening them to not told anyone that she is fake plus even if they did then the words that because of them the real chancellor daughter die then either way they will be punished that why this scene happened is what I think 🤔
