I love Shen as a villain. He’s one of the most complex characters I’ve seen this year. His self-loathing for putting his ambition ahead of his morals is SO MUCH FUN to watch. He clearly wants to think of himself as an honourable man…and he *could* have been an honourable man if he hadn’t been put in this position but he’s taken the first step to Hell and there’s no going back for him now
Wish I could like this 10x, I feel exactly the same way. So many people get to call themselves good people without ever having to actually face those choices in life, it's only people who have had to face those things that can really see their true selves. And it's not always what you had hoped to see.
Shen Yu Rong is going through a reverse character arc after the abuse Wanning has put him through and guilt. Wanning has his family’s lives in her hands and she loves him in her own twisted way. Wanning broke him as she wanted. He’s no longer an upright official but wading in the mud of her immorality. He’s becoming a schemer, losing his mind and morals. The more he pampers Wanning the safer his family is and now he can use his abuser. I loved most of his character arc. His mom and sister should have taken the hint, gathered some wealth and prepare for the storm that Wanning brings. I’m betting Wanning is the daughter of a Consort or she has the same mother as Cheng. That’s why the Emperor was so willing to put her in a political marriage for the sake of the people and why she takes Cheng’s side. They have to be half siblings somewhere in there. It also explains the Emperor’s guilt towards her.
I feel like the dad was a period typical dad who saw his children kind of as extra special cattle. If his previous daughter wasn't going to be useful, and the guy who had the good daughter is obviously insane, why doesn't he just keep the good daughter? As awful as that sounds. There might be some fading guilt but it's mostly just trying to get the most out of a situation
One thing that I do think about SYR is that although he feels guilt, in the end he still defaults back to saying that “he had no choice, he had to do this to protect his mother and sister, so don’t blame him for this” ??? It’s still a choice he made. He CHOSE to sacrifice his wife - and in Chinese ancient tradition that is a really grievous sin. Choosing to bury her alive was HIS choice in her death. He had ambitions, he wanted to protect his family. I’m not saying it’s not a difficult choice, it absolutely is but for him to still think he’s a morally upright character who only became bad because of a difficult circumstances is really something. (Especially further along the show) Wanning has a famous line explaining to SYR what SYR’s love for Xue Fang Fei is vs Duke Su that really hit the nail on the head and I can’t wait for you to get to that part! Thanks for the recap as always!
A Li's skills and dedication towards Magistrate Xue and the village is decently suspicious, but I do like her clapping back with saying that Tong'er, Jiang Li's obviously loyal maid, is with her.
I'm with you when every time Jiang gets praise on how well his "daughter" is raised, like guys, do you guys not forget that he play no part of her life for 10 years?! I never feel pity for Shen. He killed A'Li by buried her by his choice when he could've choose more merciful way. Now that I know he also have hands in Xue and maybe A'Li brothers, I don't pity him at all. He definitely is heartless man. 6:14 I'm also with you on this one too. It's hilarious comments.

About the "Wang" title. China is called an empire and the ruler is emperor the sons of the emperor are addressed as "Wang" this title cannot be given to anyone but men directly fathered by an emperor and mothered by either empress or any of his legal wives (consorts, concubines etc.) in English the translation "Prince" is fine. I found this in the unofficial translation of "Qi Ye/ Lord Seventh" where the Emperor personally granted the title of "Wang" to his friend's son making him the first "Wang" in history to not be related with the Emperor by blood.

Duke Su's prettier (so, so much prettier XD) and has all those fancy xianxia martial-arts moves :P Also, Cheng-wang could actually be "King Chung"; it was not unheard-of for Emperors to elevate relatives to Kingly status, so long as they acknowledged (often theoretical) vassalage to him.
Yea Chancellor Li is hilarious he revels in a chance to act superior over someone but he has my respect for at least admitting that A’li besting both of his sons was something and they are worthless in comparison
