    11:10 Exactly! I was thinking that he should've done everything he could to try to fake A'Li's death and hide her before murdering her. I lowkey feel like if he had told her about it, she'd be smart enough to pull it off.

    11:14 Yeah, definitely talking in circles. I guess I'm just trying to say I get Shen's choice, I would have made the same choice, but it's still a choice at the end of the day no matter how horrible.
    And where before he was owning that, now it seems he's trying to remove all accountability. Which is still stellar writing in my opinion because people really do be like that lol

    Gosh the prison scene is amazing. You can just see the power jumping from Wanning to Shen and back to Wanning again.

    I know the camera work has always been an interesting choice, but the prison scene work between SYR and WN is great. When is she smacked down, SYR stands above her now - marking the shift in their power dynamics.
    The thing is SYR didn’t sacrifice just A’li, he sacrificed her entire family. Idk but for me, if my family had committed a heinous crime for riches, I would rather them die for what they did and try to bring WN down and my line can end, it’s not like SYR had an heir anyway to carry on the Shen line plus if he really felt guilty, he would have just offed himself like you said.
    Wanning never threatened his mom and sister, they fawned over her and were excited by the prospect of riches and glory. MIL threatens that the whole family will die if SYR doesn’t kill XFF but that was to make him kill her, she’s not remotely upset about having to do it 😂 Jiuyue in these episodes is a great example of a person who truly loves someone - she let them be with who they love. Wanning could learn a thing or two, but I am grateful that she showed us who SYR can be deep inside! And of course without these choices, we wouldn’t have the drama sooooo 😂 idk, it is a difficult situation all around and that’s just my own opinion but I could also be biased because SYR and WN are even crueler in the book.
    Marriage in Chinese tradition meant the combination of two families, but the wife is considered to have “married into” the husband’s family (which still applies today!) so their first and foremost family is now their husbands which is why new year is celebrated with husband’s family.
    Tbh I think the drama just finds whatever reason it can to make viewers sympathise and to make them more dimensional, I did feel kinda sorry for SYR the first time I watched it but that went out of the window at this point 😂
    Thanks for the recap! ❤

    ShenYuRong's motivations are still now very clear, I agree. I suspect there's more to the guy than just the scholar and husband that we all know and love.

    There was a sentence in princess royal that I think fit very nicely here. The question was asked "'would you save your wife or your family'' and the other person said the question is wrong. "'Your wife is also your family'. My answer to who will you save if A or B is drowning. Both, or I will die saving them too. So I get Shen but at the same time I don't get him. Also he become more hateful when he is anything but ashamed when facing her.

    Their music performance of Shen and An'li, may not have had super effects but it was their song.😭😭😭My heart. For a moment I thought Shen had killed his mom with that tea.

    Duke Su’s face is clearly annoyed and jealous that they are performing together 😂 One part I loved was that in their scene the morning after, Duke Su tells her that she should stay true to herself and never compromise herself for anyone ever again, including himself. That is such a big shift from SYR, whom she always had to prioritise to her own detriment. A’li’s MIL never let her leave the house whilst they were staying in the capital btw, keeping her mostly confined in the house. Boy mums ugh.

      I think the show did a great job of not taking the easy route here, because while of course XL made a ton of sacrifices for him, he also did for her and was more than willing to stand up to his mom for her (e.g. when he paid to fix her qin because he knew what it meant to her and completely steamrolled over his mother's complaints about not having the money to buy his sister stuff) his mother even says it's like he values XL over them, which I guess is why she was so resentful of XL.
      But anyway the easy route would have been to just make him a shitty husband, or make him happy to kill her. Then of course we can all just happily hate him. But he genuinely seemed like a good husband and man, and might have continued to be forever had this WanNing thing not happened. That's a bit tougher to grapple with, and I like that!

      @@dramarecaps4217thanks for your reply! i might be looking at it through the lens of a chinese marriage so i feel differently but yes that was one scene where i was finally like oh so you can be a nice husband like its literally your job to take care of her 😂 tho he never actually stands up for her in front his mother who is mistreating her still…..
      i’ve already delved into why i dont think they would have continued on being a happy couple in my other reply on number 27 (esp not with a nightmare MIL now that youve reminded me but oh so typical of chinese households!) completely agree that show didnt take easy way out!
      is it weird if i say i would actually understand him more if he betrayed A’li for power and riches more though since people have done it since the beginning of time? 😂 honestly i can understand the mother and sister’s motivation more than I can SYR. In laws hated her, hated being poor, yep perfect excuse to off someone! 😂 whereas for SYR he was cheating on A’li, and then he claims other people forced his hand but it’s his family who colluded with WN and also knowing WN and Cheng Wang’s to frame XHY, embezzle from gold mines and this is treason, literally going against everything he believes in. To me that’s a lot less believable than him just being corrupt and and wanting power and riches 😅
      I don’t think WN on day 1 of their relationship went KILL YOUR WIFE, there had to be build up to that as SYR gets more entangled in her web. He was clearly already familiar with her since she touched him casually when she saw him (as seen by XFF) and he had her pendant with him which XFF found. Would have loved to see this in the drama actually! So many questions.

    Shen is such a typical asian man who will throw his wife under the bus for this mother because apparently wives are disposable. I mean this is a drama and not real life but I am asian and I have seen this disposing of wives for mothers and family members for generations that I cannot help but root for Xue Li that yeah Shen should have let his family die for his wife idgaf.

    • @dramarecaps4217
      @dramarecaps4217  26 дней назад

      I really don't see it that way (wives being disposable) but I do think the relationship with your blood family is usually stronger than the relationship with your spouse? I mean people fall in and out of love all the time, but family (well, assuming you have a good relationship with them) is a lifelong bond.
      If it were XueLi in this situation, like let's say Cheng wanted her and threatened to kill her brother and dad, would you say she should let her family die for Shen and not gaf about her family?

    Oh Shen... I hate him, but can't hate him for too long. I feel so sorry for him at the same time. All he wanted to do is be a good man and righteous court official. To be fair he hasn't touched his wife for a while, or who knows he might have done this to purposely get himself in trouble.

    I don't blame shen for not wanting to now sacrifice his family for her but my guy you had time before hand to help save her but not only did you not your mother and sister helped in ruining her reputation. Which in those times were really all women had. So ofcourse she won't spare them. + her father and bro weren't spared either

    Sorry, not sorry. I never had any pity for Shen. You see characters like him in most cdramas dramas and ultimately it's always someone else's fault. I've only seen one character who redeemed himself after having an indirect hand in killing his loved one and he didn't put the blame on anyone but himself. That was Ye Hua in Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms.

    • @dramarecaps4217
      @dramarecaps4217  26 дней назад

      I see that. I think I mentioned before that I liked him best when he was purely blaming himself and just accepting his decision. Now he starts to twist it so he can relieve himself of the blame 😞

    For Shen he wants to think of himself as good person who did a bad thing a powerful woman wanted him but wouldn’t take no for an answer. His family acted for him and his mother threatened to end her life if he didn’t go through with it.. I doubt he had time to think about running away or anything. Who do I save my blood or my wife?
    Her calling him a coward is easy for her to say because her family is not in the fire if your loved one is in Wanning’s grip do you still say go ahead kill them I won’t bend. No one knows what they will do until they are in that situation..

      I think that's the best question asked in this drama- can you really call yourself a good person if you've never been tested? What would a 'good person' really do when faced with such a terrible choice? It reminds me a lot of the movie "Sophie's choice" and all the discourse surrounding it about what you would have done. But you don't really know until you're there.
