Consort Xian suffers in almost every harem drama. Historically, we know she had to have a good reputation to become the future step-empress and be capable. We also know that most of her family dies while she's in the palace but not from what. She is literally the perfect tragic character. Thus, each drama presents her as kind to the servants and someone with morals, but she gets hit with tragedy after tragedy. She's my favourite character in Ruyi's Love and Yanxi Palace because she always suffers despite doing her best. Even when she wins, she's never fortunate to stay on top for long. As Ruyi she tried to stay good despite the tragedy but lost from being depressed in the end, and as Shushen she's tries to be moral but the tragedies push her over the edge and sends her down a dark path. She deserves so much love for being one of the best characters in fiction.
Based on historical records, Xian was chosen from she was a baby to be Hongli’s second wife by his grandfather or father ( i can’t remember which one at the moment) and it’s purely out of political reasons at the time, when Hongli was 15 years old Xian was only 7 years old so they had no relationship whatsoever in his early teenage years, he married Fuca at 16 years old and Fuca was 15, Xian was 8 years old , so upon entering the palace officially as a consort Hongli was already in love with Fuca and had no relationship with Xian, The relationship between Her and Hongli in RRLITP Did not exist, it was all made up. 3 years after Fuca died The ED told Hongli to make Xian the step Empress as that’s what was intended ( politically) by his grandfather/father So reputation or being liked had nothing to do with why she became the step empress, The Empress Dowager did in fact think she was the most qualified person at the time but again she would’ve been prepared for that role since young as that was the political deal beforehand regardless if Hongli liked her or not which it seems like he really didn’t but he respected her regardless but it seems she wanted his heart( which is understandable) but he wasn’t able to give it to her.
@@kandicefranky3253 well tbh I don’t actually see her as much of a tragic character in Yanxi’s palace, from my understanding of her story here , she’s more pressured from her mother but remember at that time she wasn’t even noticed by the emperor so after her mother committed suicide in front of her , pairing with being bullied by Gau ( which I must say Gau was right about her trying to pretend she’s good) . I live for the kind of master-servant relationship where the two have a mutual understanding and are willing to stick their necks out for each other. Keep a close watch on that young eunuch--he's going to be very important later. -Gao just seems to live for making other people's lives miserable--she insults some of the xiunu at the harem draft, won't let Yu have a moment of peace, smacks Jia around, acts petty and dramatic whenever she doesn't get her way and even humiliates poor Empress Fuca on her birthday, not to mention the freakin' murders. The power has obviously gone to her head, especially given her family's influence and wealth. -The ugly dog is a Pekingese (who imo is so ugly he rolls back around into 'cute' territory)! He's a gift from Gao's brother, who gets named Xueqiu ('Snowball') because he apparently resembles a pile of snow? I don't really see the resemblance, but whatever. Gao views him mostly as a status symbol--only members of the Imperial Family were allowed to own one, and common people actually had to bow to them when they walked by! Several were brought to the UK after the 1860 sack of the Old Summer Palace by British troops; one was given to Queen Victoria, who named it 'Looty'. Later, Empress Dowager Cixi would present several as gifts to foreign dignitaries. One of their origin myths states that a lion and a marmoset fell in love, but were too different in size, so they went to the Buddha, who shrunk the lion and enlarged the marmoset. Their resulting offspring were the Pekingese dogs. It's a critique of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, who spoiled his famous concubine Yang Guifei by, among other things, having riders specially bring lychees on horseback for her to eat. My interpretation is that she's expressing her appreciation (comparing herself to Yang) while also gently chiding the Emperor for this extravagance. Qianlong, for his part, could use the much faster canal system that was in place at this point to transport the trees. -You can tell that Yingluo has grown to care for Yu somewhat and doesn't want her to share Yi's fate; she is also the one that suggests that Jia should have to grovel to Yu (when I first watched this show years ago I whooped out loud when she did so). -The consorts Xian asks for money are likely Ying Guiren, Wan Guiren and Rui Guiren. Can I just say, the scene at 4:20 always makes me grin. The emperor is just watching his wife with the biggest smile on his face; he clearly loves seeing her happy and excited. Its just adorable. But yeah, he obviously couldn't care less about any of the other consorts. In a way it's sweet since he's at least emotionally loyal to his wife, and would probably prefer to have just her. But it's really unfair to all the other women in the harem since they're left with the scraps of his leftover affection, which, from what we've seen, really isn't much. It's hard to not feel sympathy for them, especially when all most of them are trying to do is just survive.

This part of the Xian story line was my least favorite, I really disliked it. That's what I said! Just stick Yinglou with her full time, save lotso f drama.
Yeh, I know Yanxi is generally more popular but I'm honestly not seeing it. The main character is too perfect and most of the female characters all look too similar I'm struggling to tell them apart. I don't like like the colors, costumes or lighting and the acting seems a little weak. I'm team Ruyi forever lol I'll admit, I've not seen Yanxi and will only be watching these recaps and I'm not saying the show is actually bad, just that it seems not as good as Ruyi and super not for me at all. Love the recaps though.
I thought the exact same a few years back when I first watched Ruyi. I think it’s best to watch each drama with a few years wait between the two to really appreciate them both. They’re both very different but great in their own unique way. I have been converted to Yanxi now but it’s all down to preference.
It's nowhere as good as Ruyi and Zhenhuan but it's still fun. Yingluo being a mary sue was kinda annoying during my first watch but the empress made me stay. And the little twist characters later are so much fun. This drama is good for laughs and Ruyi/Zhenhuan for more serious storytelling.
I completely disagree. Yinglou seems perfect now, but she is outclassed multiple times in the drama. She actually grows as a character. The costumes are actually more historically accurate than Ruyi, same with the hair and jewelry. Yanxi had a similar budget as Ruyi, but didn't have to pay as many big named actors, so more of it went towards costumes and locations than Ruyi. As for the acting, while Ruyi's actress is better than Yinglou (imo), almost everyone else acts better in this drama than Ruyi. Xian character is unmatched, and the Emperor and other concubines have great acting as well, even if it is a bit dramatic. In Ruyi, I felt like all the 'bad' concubines had bird brains and were even more ridiculous than Yanxi. However, I will agree with you that the lighting and overall beauty of Ruyi is amazing. It is a well-filmed drama.
Yanxi is more serious and visually stunning, especially the costuming. They're quite different dramas covering the same subject matter with their own twists
@@StaticCling99 I have to disagree that Yanxi is more serious. It seems more unrealistic and more like a fairytale than Ruyi. Ruyi is to me, a little more realistic, brutal, depressing.
I love watching the recaps, but I honestly can't like YingLuo yet...she's too perfect, everything turns out well for her at the end. I don't want to sound like the bad guy here, but God, I wish she fell into a trap and we could see her get out of real trouble 🧍🏽♀️ The story seems promising though, I'm really engaged on what is happening next 🐇 Thank you for your hard work!
10:12 i think the idea is that since the young eunuch has been stealing snowballs food thats why snowball was hungry??

I can't waitttttt until you talk about the other maid of the empress. ah I forgot her name but not minju 😂 she got on my damn nerves crazy self lol
We don't talk about that witch......xD
She really the devil in disguise.
I love seeing this
The notification makes my day
been waiting all day for this ❤
Clicked so fast 😊
I heard that back then the pekingese dog (snowballs breed) are treated like royalty and only the royals could own one
Gou was the queen of the eye roll and i loved the character arc of shen in this series better then ruyi.
I guess I'm the only one who thinks the dog’s cute. Reminds me of Spudgy (RIP)
Love these comments
But the dog WAS on a diet... the eunuch ate all its food
Yup, someone else pointed that out- I totally missed the connection 😅
Will you finish the Ruyi book review series? :D :D
This part of the Xian story line was my least favorite, I really disliked it.
That's what I said! Just stick Yinglou with her full time, save lotso f drama.
I am a little curious , why ?
@@lakaperse6995 Why what? I just feel really bad for Xian.
@@rockdocandlittlebird ooh!! I thought you disliked her , ok .
@@lakaperse6995 Oh, no, I love her, she's just fantastic. Nobody plans like Xian, she plays the long game.
❤
Yeh, I know Yanxi is generally more popular but I'm honestly not seeing it. The main character is too perfect and most of the female characters all look too similar I'm struggling to tell them apart. I don't like like the colors, costumes or lighting and the acting seems a little weak. I'm team Ruyi forever lol
I'll admit, I've not seen Yanxi and will only be watching these recaps and I'm not saying the show is actually bad, just that it seems not as good as Ruyi and super not for me at all.
I don't want to sound like the bad guy here, but God, I wish she fell into a trap and we could see her get out of real trouble 🧍🏽♀️
The story seems promising though, I'm really engaged on what is happening next 🐇 Thank you for your hard work!
