Before Tallinn’s Trolleybus Renaissance | Tallinna Trollibuss 🚎🇪🇪 | Urban Transport #35
This video will describe the trolleybus system of Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. For a while, it was looking like this system was going to disappear, as lines were closed, and battery buses were purchased. However, the municipality changed its mind and the trolleybus system will be renewed (for the most part) while using the new in-motion charging battery trolleybuses to enable a true renaissance. In the current fleet, the Solaris Trollino 12 and 18 are the main types. Grab your chance to see this system before its temporary closure from November 2024.
This video is the 35th episode of the series Urban Transport, with full-on descriptions of various urban public transport networks (mostl...

Helsinki's Jokeri Light Rail project might have been one of the most successful public transport projects worldwide. In this video I will go through its origins, the choices that were made, the trams used, as well as a detailed description of the route and technicalities. To remind you, this project was finished way ahead of schedule and the costs were lower than initially budgeted, which is in...

    Also for extra here are the routes that have been replaced with buses: 2 Mustamäe - Estonia (Estonia or “Estonia theater” is very close to Kaubamaja) Interstingly, the overhead wires of route 2 remain, because they can be used if there is a power outage, since a street in Mustamäe where the wires run from they connect routes 3 and 4 and 1 and 5 6 Väike-Õismäe (district in Tallinn) - Kaubamaja 7 Väike-Õismäe - Balti jaam 8 Vabaduse väljak (“Freedom square”, also close to Estonia and Kaubamaja) - Väike-Õismäe 9 Keskuse - Kopli (a district in Tallinn)

    I life in walking distance to one of its stations and I absolutely support it, but it is way too slow! It is slower than the bus it replaces. Due to its super tight turns and frequent stops it is excruciatingly slow. It sadly cannot compete on speed with cars. Its so frustrating to sit in the light rail seeing cars go by at twice the speed.

  • @mmdoof
    @mmdoof 3 дня назад

    This line was actually designed as a light rail line in the 1990's, but lack of commitment to development and auto-centric mindset delayed it and a trunk bus line was built as a stopgap measure. So Jokeri wasn't really designed as an answer to congestion per say. Of course now that the initial stretch has been converted, it has elevated the capacity potential in the corridor.

    The only thing I don't understand, is that Western Europe makes trolleybus a future vehicle, as some cities in Swiss or Austria already taking every bus out of service and replacing them with trolleybus... I think Kaunas is the only Baltic trolleybus network city, that still has plans to expand trolleybus networth... By the way, if the city with ONLY 16 Km. of overhead wires makes the city with only 6 km of wires, so what is the point of even having trolleybuses as they mostly will serve as an electric buses.

I'll personally do everything in my power to see the system exist again, I assure you that you don't have to worry too much, the TLT director has also promised to re-alive the system after a couple of years and thinks of trolleys as a good and a cheaper (also bigger capacaty) alternative to electric buses. Btw, electric buses are rather a trouble at the moment here in Tallinn😂 I also have to point this out.... Rick, when you pronounce "Estonia", please do so with double o creating something like Esstooonia - that's how we call the stop / terminus and the opera theatre:) Thank you for this wonderful overview, it was definitely interesting and let's hope to see this system reopen! - Aaron, @tallinn_trams (IG) admin:)

Bi-articulated Solaris Trollino 24 MetroStyle.

    • @benaspetkevicius7139

      Most likely 32Tr due to Škoda getting every city a 32Tr (Alsmost every). Also city does not test the trolleybus before buying, they buy it, and then the finish products gets tested in the city, later for passengers.

    I think "incredibly well executed" is a bit of an overstatement from someone who has actually used it and lives close by. It has some good things of course but here are some negatives: 1. There have been many times that the whole line is just not moving because of a big snow storm, even though it's only been running for half a year or something so far, so I expect only more outages to come. 2. The tracks/wheels already squeak a lot when going into turns and this causes unpleasant noise to neighborhoods that it passes through. 3. The time it took me to get to university has doubled compared to taking the 550 bus. Part of this is because they cancelled line 550 completely and the tram line is a 10 min walk away, but even with the same walk it would still be slower because it stops at every stop 800m apart (on average) and never goes that fast. The benefit of not being stuck in traffic is completely wasted because you're stuck at stations. In my opinion they should've kept the buses running but at less frequent intervals, because the trams have already been overcrowded as well.

    • @jepulis6674

    Another nice little detail to point out is that the Eastern part of the light rail runs along the same route as one of the old cargo and freight rail lines, which ran through Viikki and down to Herttoniemi. Around 30-40 years ago and further back in history, Helsinki had several industrial and commercial seaports along its coastline, and each one of them had their own assigned railway stations. Now that all that has been centralized to Vuosaari Harbor, the decades old large rail network, scattered around the city, was gradually decommissioned and eventually scrapped. But now, this one old route has been, in a sense, resurrected to rail traffic.
