The Magnificent Small Tram System of Olomouc | Tramvaje v Olomouci 🚃🇨🇿 | Urban Transport #40
This video will describe the amazingly well-run and small tram system of Olomouc. With 7 lines and a lot of interlining, the system achieves perfect frequencies on its network. This results in a very good ridership for a city of this size (102 thousand inhabitants). The tram fleet is diverse, with trams made by a variety of manufacturers. Of course, as a Czech city, the famous Tatra T3 is also present here.
This video is the 40th episode of the series Urban Transport, with full-on descriptions of various urban public transport networks (mostly in Europe).

The Copenhagen Metro is an automated metro system, on which I took a ride. I managed to get a front seat in the AnsaldoBreda-train and filmed the route. The M4 line runs between Orientkaj and Copenhagen's south station. The section between the main station and Copenhagen's south station has been opened in June 2024. It would be cool if you would someday make a video about the Košice tram system
Did not imagine that there is a such popular tram system (in relation to the population of the city)! Thanks for the video!
If I’m right Olomouc is a student city as well, so I guess that is a big driver
i love when my small country gets appreciated like this :)
0:26 i am pretty sure this is not Olomouc
It is! It says Olmütz on the postcard. In the early 20th century, it was still part of the Austro-Hungarian empire.
@realdronthego I can read. But I am totally sure the inscription is wrong.
Nice video, also you could check out Ostrava trams i live here and the system is awesome, we also have a special line that has only one track and goes to the countryside
Ostrava is coming up anytime soon!
Line 7 in Brno runs only during week days to help line 6 and 8
102,000 population and 77,000 riders daily, that's phenomenal
Indeed!
one of hamburgs most iconic trains!
I've been to Olomouc 2 years ago. I didn't ride the trams, but the city itself is very beautiful! Not that much known abroad, but gives excellent experience!
It is a beautiful city!
Lovely little tram system! All little towns should have one (as most of them did before WWII)
Nice video, I live in the village near the Olomouc and the tram transportation is the most comfortable way of transport in the city. Maybe except walking :)
Thank you! It is indeed amazing!
I still don't understand how can they transport so many Amperes thru 600V DC system, one tram can have even like 200 kW of total power and you can have several of them under the same wire which means you are transporting hundreds or even thousands of amperes thru just + and - wires (minus is rail), that sounds impossible.
In tram and trolleybus networks, the contact line is fed from traction substations located approximately every three to five kilometres, if that helps. So the cable doesn't feed all of the trams at the same time.
Full power is not usually needed all the time, so the 200 kW is just peak load (and about 335 A), also the system has multiple feeding points (not just sat the rectifier station) and both overhead wires are usually at some distances connected. So it forms quite complex circuit and also there could be significant voltage drop and the voltage at rectifying station could be set higher than nominal 600V. Well now imagine that the feeder station at main railway line going through Olomouc has to feed multiple locomotives rated for 6MW at 3kV DC.
@@MrToradragon Yes, ofcourse I know that there are many feeding points, but still, when there is a traffic jam, you can have 3 or 5 trams next to each other, but I guess that wire is high diameter, so it can handle it. BTW, I googled it and it's much more than 200 kW, some modern trams can have total peak power 750 kW, but ofcourse as you say, such power is rarely really used, especially when you consider that moving on rails is very efficiend compared to pneu tyres.
What an adorable tram line, thanks for the video!
Thank you!!
There are some really weird graphical problems at 1:20
What exactly? It works fine for me
The hell is 36Tr???, time flies by so fast that I didn't even know we've gotten past 33Tr already... Someone please slow this world down 😭😭
Škoda apparently tries to offer various bodies for their trolleybuses. 26Tr, 27Tr, 32Tr, 33Tr, 36Tr and 38Tr are on offer now😁
Hi! The main reason of the large number of optional trolleys is because there's a plan to replace the buses on the Rákóczi út with trolleys, because there are like 432543 bus lines on Rákóczi út. In the past there was a tram service and they're planning to rebuild it. Until that it's a great idea to replace the buses with the trolleys and rebuild the Rákóczi út for center bus lanes, as the trolleys and the trams use the same voltage and it'd be easier to build a tram in the place of the center bus lanes. :)
Probably the existing lines will be longer with more route without wires. And also it is possible to replace some buses with trolleybuses. There were an attempt to do that and tested City Trolley what was basically a shortened version of bus line 15.
What a cozy video? Regrettably I can not reveal any trolleybus expansion plans since alI am not an enthusiast, but there are serious government efforts to create battery production plants, which probably will bring an other wave of electric public transport vehicles.
Tram trains are awesome
Many years ago we also had those in Copenhagen.
Heck yeah
why they are going so slow on prety good wire switches?
Just behind that is a sharp curve where it needed to merge with other traffic. It was at the Mustamäe loop, so without passengers as well.
@realdronthego the curves in the turn are also not bad, with small angles of about 15-20°, it is possible to drive around the turn at about 15-20km/h
Fantastic video! I like the way the tunnels are illuminated. Everything looks tidy, too. At 11:39 you can hear a German kid making a comment on the Danish and English announcements: "Ich versteh' nur 'Bahnhof'!" ("All I can understand is 'station'!"). In German that's an idiom for 'I don't understand anything at all". 🚂😅 All the best from Bremen/Germany!
What model 18m trolleybusses do you think vilnius will buy?
Solaris Trollino 18 (or Škoda 27Tr), or Škoda 33Tr. I don’t think they will introduce any other brand. But let’s see😁
Great filming, thank you.
There’s a plan for the next phase of the "Pesti fonódó" tram project, which would extend the connected tram network in Pest, similar to the "Budai fonódó" network. The goal is to link as many tram lines as possible to create longer, uninterrupted routes. This way, passengers won’t need to transfer between tram lines or other modes of transportation (like switching from tram to metro and back to tram). The Budai fonódó is nearly complete, with only two minor extensions planned for the future. However, the Pesti fonódó could create even longer routes, including a proposal to (re)build tram tracks between Deák Ferenc tér and Lehel tér, linking lines 14 and 47/49. If implemented, this would create the system's longest line, spanning 22 km (currently, line 41 is the longest at 18.5 km). Planning could be finalized by 2027, so construction won’t start immediately, but the project is viable. In preparation, a stress test was conducted on Liberty Bridge earlier this year to assess whether the new CAF trams could safely use it once the Pesti fonódó project proceeds. (For further details, you can check the Wikipedia pages on "Pesti fonódó villamoshálózat" and "Budai fonódó villamoshálózat." These are only available in Hungarian, but Google Translate provides good translations.)
В Риге 15 трамвай???😂
Great vid! I knew basically nothing about trolleys in Tallinn until yesterday when i found out about replacing them with buses. Let's hope it's really only temporary and trolleys will return.. but it makes me kinda sad 😔 trolley fleet isn't that old.
Thank you! As far as I see, it does look like they will really return, as tenders for new trolleybuses are already launched.
Me: 'Wow, how many different cities have you visited?' 🤔 You: ' *Yes* '
Keeping an archive of all materials is also good😁
Wer you get dis vidious

I love disks tram am from riga
Wery dood tram
Today (October 29) a tram line to the Wilanów district was opened. It is served by lines 14 (to the Banacha loop) and 16 (to the Piaski loop)
Great news!!!
There are technically two trams on line T4 that are compatible with line T1 and that are the Düwag B80S en B100S, because they have folding steps from their time in Cologne so the vehicles could also use the low platforms on the network
YEAHHHHHH IM FROM ESTONIAAAAA
Nice!
Tampere city council and Pirkkala county council both voted yes and gave the green light to the expansion of the tram system to Pirkkala and the Linnainmaa district. In 2032 it will be fully completed and operational. Let’s go! 🚃💪🏻 Construction should begin in November-December 2024.
Good news indeed!
1:12 map is slighly wrong in Hajik area, the trolleybus line is only on the main road and doesn't branch and rejoin like you showed (line 6 and 16 are incorrectly while 7 is correct)
14 Starts at Matice Slovenskej and end at Fatranská😉
Can you please do Romania next as well?
"Hopefuly I didn't make you dizzy" 😂😂 Nice interesting video as usual, thanks! 😊❤
Thank you!!
NEW VIDEO FROM OSTRAVA???
It will come😁
❤❤❤❤❤
Oh my city!❤
Wow finland is 𝕔𝕠𝕠𝕝
Yes!
It would've been better if you had put little arrows on the line diagrams to show their direction of travel, rather than just saying "clockwise" or "anticlockwise". It's a little hard to visualise that properly when the video goes over each route so quickly.
How come most trolleybus systems in Slovakia only appeared in the 1980s and 1990s, unlike in Czechia?
Bratislava 1909 - 1915 / 1941 - now Prešov 1958 - now
Yeah, that's what I meant. Slovakia only had two trolleybus systems until as late as 1989. Czechia, on the other hand, already had 10 trolleybus systems back before 1989.
@@jonarthritiskwanhc The main obvious reason is simply the number of cities that are suitable for the trolleybus system based on their size. I would say that cities with a population over 50,000 can be possible candidates for such a system. Based on that. There are now circa 20 such cities or conurbations in Czechia and only about 10 in Slovakia. More so Slovakia was less industrialized back then compared to Czechia. So the after-war boom of building trolleybus networks (and ripping up tram tracks) has been more profound in Czechia. And already in the 70s trolleybuses were seen by many as old technology supposed to be replaced by diesel buses. So ŽIina, Banská Bystrica, and Košice rather caught the second (or third if you like) wave of trolleybus system implementations after the oil crisis and rising environmental concerns.
Nice! It would be so cool if you make a video about Pardubice trolleybus (that's where I live). I love your videos 😊
Thank you!!
One thing i would apreciate would be knowing the frequencies of the routes as i think they are a vital detail of every public transit network.
Usually you are able to get anywhere pretty fast with the frequent lines but requiring to tranfer, or you wait longer and get a direct transport 1 - 1 hour 3,4,14,6 - 10/15/20 mins 5 - 20/30 mins 7 - 30/60/120 mins
@@daco69420 Thank you
