  • Finally, Riga has started upgrading their tram system and bringing it to the standards we are familiar with today. The sections between Ausekļa iela and Nacionālā opera, as well as the section between Iļģuciems and Baldones iela have been upgraded. Tram stops now offer level-boarding, making the low-floor trams (Škoda 15T) accessible for people with disabilities. Line 7 to Ķengarags is also undergoing a similar overhaul. Besides adjusting platforms and renewal of the tracks, overhead wires also have to be adapted for the use of pantographs, as the older Tatra T3A and Tatra T3MR are equipped with trolley poles.

    I'm so happy to see my baltic friends improve! I'm all for them getting better. And maybe the car bump thing is meant so people getting to the station have some safety?

      The point is more that it would be logical to lead cars behind the platform, rather than cross it🤔

      @realdronthego i agree, but in that case its not possible since next to it is a pretty busy pathway from a school and its next to the opera, and i doubt theres space for that

      Maybe, but it has been the approach along all the upgraded sections. Even where there is plenty of space available..

    I think the tram stop you mentioned in the video is fine. The traffic light is always on red well in advance if a tram is about to stop. The street width also plays a big part in why this style was chosen. If they would’ve used an island platform, it and the parallel sidewalk would be very narrow and while inviting cars to not pay attention and pass by at speed. Which makes it a very unpleasant place to wait for your tram as a passenger. The street-entry solution integrates the transit stop into the sidewalk while still enabling level boarding. But nonetheless, great video showing the improvements!

    I hope my tram system (antwerp) gets the same treatment because its so terrible

    This reminds me of when Toronto had the new Flexity Streetcars, though it was multi-year transition so the trams had pantographs and trolley poles.

      It takes a while indeed. Riga is also far from completed right now.

    Riga only retained trolley poles because they could use trolleybus parts cut in half. As a result, the speed of the trams in Riga is suffering because of network parts designed over 60 years ago.

    Nice video! Riga is planning to put the low floor Škoda 15T on the tram route 7 by the end of July. Are you gonna film some time later (if that happens) a video about it or no? It would quite cool, even on a poll.
    Thanks for reading this!

    This might be a quite unpopular opinion, but it would be quite interesting if Riga would not decide to switch from trolley poles to pantographs in the first place 😄

      Interesting thought, it would be somewhat unique. But in the end it will make things quite a bit harder, if you would like to order new trams for example. Tallinn’s municipality told it was already harder to find someone to make trams for their rather unique 1067 mm gauge🤔

    i dont think so ... In Riga trams are realy slow , i have use it loot of time and trams running around 30-40km/h! Also part of the routes was canceled in a few years. Most routes run much less often than a few years ago

      There is still a lot to critique it for, but the various improvements now are making the system better.

    Ii'm also really confused about turning some tram stops into sort of speed bumps instead of having cars go around, asked about it on reddit and people were defending it like "this is good, even Berlin has done it" but I'm just not convinced. Obviously great though that they're working on level boarding, stop spacing and everything else

    • @realdronthego
      @realdronthego  4 месяца назад +1

      I could understand it if it would have been a legacy thing, but for new/upgraded stops, it’s an odd choice…

    • @Kreicss
      @Kreicss 4 месяца назад +1

      @@realdronthegotheres just no space for that sadly, since right next to it is a building

    • @lielakoma
      @lielakoma 3 месяца назад

      @@Kreicssthere is currently space to run dedicated tram tracks in the middle with 1 car lane either side. Normally it would be easy to run cars in the middle and trams on the side, but this would mean rebuilding the major intersection next to the tram stop which is outside the scope of this project

    I don't really understand what was wrong with the renewed stop in the video, can you explain?

    • @realdronthego
      @realdronthego  3 месяца назад

      There is a car lane passing over the boarding platform. You always need to make sure the cars stop now. Better design would be to let the cars pass behind the platform.

    They will chop down many trees and destroy other greenery to extend Line 7. Passengers have to cross the car lane marked with red pavement tiles in the new stops on Line 7 too. How does a trolley pole switch on junctions?
