So if i were to lay 12-18 inches of hardwood mulch down on grassy area. Wait a year then plant trees would probably help soil. Like back to eden method

your video just popped up in my feed as so much stuff do, but this is one of these I knew instinctively that I had to see. And I was not dissapointed. I just got my own homestead with 2 ha of land and one of the first things I did was to buy three hazelnuts from a local nusery and I want to propagate them myself, and with this I feel I got enough knowledge to pursue that goal. Putting a ring of wire near the base is simply ingenious, what a smart thing.

Thank you for sharing this information! I have a number of hazelnuts that are just about the perfect stage for doing this. I'm thinking I'll cut some of them back this fall and give it a try in the spring. As I operate my own sawmill, I produce a fair bit of sawdust.

So something like what you showed us here can be used with apple trees? I have a apple tree that I must have planted too deep and it is suckering. If I dig up some of those suckers they will produce trees? gotta try this. Also will be trying to get some wild hazel nut trees to produce suckers for me. Great video with great information. Are you leaving a certain number of stems to feed the root system or are you harvesting all the suckers. Also, what month of the year are you harvesting your rooted susckers. Thanks for the video!!

Another great video. For newly rooted chestnuts trees i would probably grow them in a nursery under 30% shade cloth for one year before planting in full sun in a field. If planting in a partially shaded location you can probably get away with directly planting in the ground.

I spend so much money at this place every year!! Best nursery ever.

Heh. Fun times as a kid would be flinging those chestnut husks at each other in a game of chicken. Our grandparents would make us kids go out & pick up those husks & save the nuts so grandpa could mow.

Thanks. I have a lone 70yo butternut tree which only produces 3-6 fruits every other year or so. Are those seed viable to plant if there are no other butternut trees nearby to pollinate?

I managed to nab some large hazelnuts (what I grew up calling filberts) and they were already brown. I thought it was odd that no squirrels had gotten them yet. I wanted to try growing some more trees. But for some reason the seeds inside were not fully developed. I'm bummed. Does make me wonder if the squirrels somehow knew they were bad. lol I figured they had just not finished up with the large English walnut trees.

I have 2 Italian prune trees. The bigger one has fruited every year since it was 3 yrs old. The 2ns one was planted 4 yrs later but has Never fruited. So what's the problem? They are about 12-15 ft from each other.

Recently watched a documentary about ancient peoples, and hazelnut was found to be a staple all across Europe for over 8000 years. Millions of calories would be gathered and they cleared land to grow the bushes.

Planted my first Desert King today. I plan on following your advice, and look forward to chowing down!

Is this good as a chop and drop support species in a forest garden? I was thinking it could build soil in my dry climate and provide shade. Then I can just coppice it back to make room for other species as required. What do you predict would happen?

Viciously invasive shrub here in VA zone 7. They form thickets and block all the beneficial native plants like redbud and dogwood from growing. My property came cursed with their cousin thorny olive which sends woody vines 30 feet up the trees.
