Our backyard has forest floor (Douglas fir forest) too but when I planted the black walnut tree (Burntridge of course) last Fall, there was a very thin of top soil, nothing like rich, fine structure like yours, and very rocky and sandy underneath. The tree leafed out well early this spring with no amendment with just some woody mulch. Did I still have the soil biology for the tree to thrive?

So if i were to lay 12-18 inches of hardwood mulch down on grassy area. Wait a year then plant trees would probably help soil. Like back to eden method

My holes are usually half that size. I need to get better.
