Cabac S80
Добавлен 28 дек 2020
Getting the Foden S80 chassis rails back in the garage and wrapped around the Cummins NH220 Engine.
After painting the engine in the last installment, I now start the build. Heavy lifting on the chassis rails, definitely have me wondering why I didn't stick to motorcycle restoration.
Anyway we are getting the scene set for the rest of the build, and I am happy with progress given the amount of spare time I have available.

Repairing the oil leaks on the Foden Fleetmaster 8 speed Gearbox.
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.Год назад
The Fleetmaster has done around 2000 miles, over the last couple of years, having gone back on the road properly for the first time since the mid 90's. Inevitably some items that cannot be readily seen during restoration will manifest themselves as the vehicle is used. This gearbox leak is a great example of something that has failed in this way.
Finishing off the gearbox tinker. 1973 Foden S80, Part 23.

At last the final installment on the gearbox tinker. All relevant seals have now been changed, gaskets replaced and that 5/8 UNF bolt in the end of the main shaft has also been replaced. Just need to get some paint on it ready for the chassis. As a bit of an update on the DS3 project I also have included fitting those intake intermediate rocker cam springs. Hopefully bit of warm weather ill mea...
Servicing and reinstalling the Epicyclic Selector. 1973 Foden S80

In this penultimate installment of looking at the gearbox, I reseal and refit the epicyclic selector to the main box. The unit is in surprisingly good condition and means that I will need to look elsewhere on the vehicle for the source of my range change problems.
Re-sealing the output shaft on the Foden Gearbox. 1973 Foden S80 Restoration (P21)

As someone who is more familiar with Fuller and ZF gearboxes, I had always been a bit concerned about replacing the output seal on the Foden gearbox. The main difference is that the output flange on Fuller and ZF gearboxes are retained externally by a large nut or a couple of bolts, dependent upon gearbox model. Whereas the Foden gearbox flange is integral to the output shaft, thus necessitatin...
The main box on the Foden 8 speed gearbox. Cummins Powered 1973 Foden S80 Restoration (P20)

Looking at the main 4 speed box. Unsurprisingly it is not without a few problems, although they do all appear to be reasonably easily remedied. Ultimately a worthwhile exercise as the remedial work will more or less guarantee that the box will never need to be opened up again.

With the weather turning cool its time to get on with the S80. I have had a summer hiatus, from the S80, catching up on other jobs and attending a few events and road runs with the Fleetmaster. Having driven this lorry I know that the gearbox was fundamentally working, however, she was very stiff on the selector and the epicyclic was very slow... That was twenty years ago when she was last run....
Tracking up the Foden Fleetmaster - Part 2.

This You Tube lark isn't as easy as it looks. I made a lot of commentary errors creating this installment and I have left a couple in, see if you can spot them. For me the hardest part of this process is not the actual job on the lorry its trying to make it all make sense. In this installment i get the Fleetmaster tracking completed. I did take her a drive once completed and the difference was ...
Tracking up The Foden Fleetmaster Part 1.

The Fleetmaster has done a few miles now, since returning to the road. I am getting wear on the tyre's that indicates a problem with the inter axle adjustment. Its a good opportunity to recheck the wheel alignment and make the necessary adjustments. Its important to get the start point sorted on any job, but critical with steering alignment. In this installment we cover the basic checks and adj...

Great to see the old girl going back together. It makes all the effort getting the various bits prepared and done worthwhile. Lovely to see someone else’s project coming together. Looking forward to seeing the progress this year.
My lip's are sealed mate. Why don't you give me a ring when you get a big lifting job, I'm only five minutes away. Well done though.
Cheers Steff
Ya was doing some huffing and puffing there Sean , those overalls must be a bit tight for ya , mind you their better than those Scania ones , they were starting to hurt my eyes 😊. Looking good pal , looking forward to the next episode 👍.
25 years of sat on my Harris in the office hasnt helped Dean. Those Scania overalls are better than their trucks. I can see why thier hourly rate is so much with overalls like them🤣
Great job. When that bearing went on my S80 tractor, it was a struggle to get in and out 4th gear. It’s a fairly early one like your, and had the thin case gearbox like your S80 does. Had the option to use a thick case for the rebuild so dis so. You can see that the gearbox in the fleetmaster has the thicker case.
They main improvements I got with that job were obviously it stopped the oil leak, but it also stopped it jumping out of overdrive in 8th and as you say made the change between 3rd and 4th gears much easier.
@ I never had an oil leak, just the poor change. I don’t think the bearing collapsed. 20 years on, the main shaft Allen bolt came loose and a full rebuild followed…
I cant remember which box it was now but either the S80 or the Fleetmaster had the broken bolt on the end of the main.
Great to see things going back together!
Certainly is.
Soon be looking like a lorry again instead of a big collection of parts. 👍🇬🇧
I hope so. We have definitely turned a corner.
Fantastic…. Just woke up after nights, Coffee dinner and the Foden
Sounds great!
As much as I love a Foden, I much prefer a snowy walk, that really looks beautiful, keep up the good work the Foden is going to be a belter, all the best.
Thanks. Living around here it is easy to take the all year round beauty of the area for granted, so its great to get out for a walk in all weathers.
I think the cutout around the hub seal tell tale is original, its there to let the oil out when it leaks and gives a visual indication that there is a problem.
Foden went to 2 seals with the high speed arrangement as used on the S80. If you fit a unitised seal, you have to modify the seal carrier as the seals fit into the hub not the carrier. Unitised seal is a much better idea altogether
Most hubs have been apart a few times. It’s easier to pull the hub with the brake drum on than trying to get the drum off the hub…. And the hub seals could be troublesome from new, normally the near side in my experience.
It was built at the Cummins factory at Shotts in Scotland, not Darlington Those back 2 injector pipes are always a PITA
On the throw out bearing housing it looks like there should be a grease nipple there,,But it's missing,,
Hi, the bearing has the grease nipple at the bottom of the bearing housing. if you look at 35:50 on the video you can get a better view of it. The gearbox has a plate at the bottom so that the grease nipple can be accessed during routine maintenance. Additionally the cross shaft has a grease nipple on either side, they are critical to ensure light (ish) operation of the pedal and prevent seizing which could cause the clutch to slip and in turn cause accelerated clutch wear,
Two uploads in a week, super job! I still have some long c and odd shaped ring spanners for getting behind the fuel pumps, compressors etc, not used them in years but hope springs eternal! Happy new year feller, keep up the good work 👍🏻🇬🇧
Happy New Year.. fantastic video… 🎉Got all of my Grandads Whitworth spanner’s which he used in his Fitting days. CATERPILLARS ARE YELLOW..!😂 Cummins are Black or Gold
Early Cummins engines were yellow. 👍
@ Offical colour was Cummins Gold Rather than Yellow. We had mainly Black Blocks, but One Gold block in a C series.
The colour has been a bit of an on going debate. I rang the factory at Darlington, and they could not give me the official colour. I then scoured the internet and the general consensus was the engine should be in Cummins Old Gold. The next problem was, that is just a name, so I needed the RAL Code. Fortunately I have a contact at Holset Turbos a subsidiary of Cummins. He said that Cummins never actually had a colour called "Old Gold" and that it is thought that when the factory, in Columbus Ohio, went to a local car paint store to get a can of paint matched to a heritage project they were working on. The car store wrote on the tin "Cummins Old Gold". Its a great story and I hope it is true. He was able to give me the RAL code and said that Camp Eden, in Malton, Yorkshire had used the RAL code for one of their projects. So armed with the code I went to Wigan Car Paints and asked for a litre of RAL 1007. The name of the paint on the tin is RAL1007 Chrome Yellow. It does have a gold hue to it and is very different to the paler insipid yellow found on Caterpillar engines. I posted this installment this morning and we have already lost a subscriber 🤦♂️, so the colour has obviously offended them too 🤣
@ Sounds like you have researched this way more than me just seeing yellow Cummins engines on older vehicles being rescued on RUclips
In fairness I knew that whatever colour it went, I would not get it right for someone. At a push I could have put it in the Beige / Green of the later NTE engines but that would not suit everyone so I went with the Gold, which was my first choice anyway. Spoiler alert when we get to the NTE in the 4350, it will be going into the beige colour... When i find the correct RAL code.
Never seen that collit tool that you use'd to remove that broken stud before Sean , handy bit of kit 👍.
Yeah it is mate. I bought it second hand about 35 years ago, so its got some age on it. You can still buy the collets from Snap on, they are about £50 each
Thank you for this…. Merry Christmas 🎅🏻MEC 530T still needs rescuing..
Cheers Mark. If I brought another project home, at the moment, I would need to live in it as the Mrs would be kicking me out.

Cheers pal. I am hoping to get on a bit of a roll now. You should be able to pick up your trestle's soon!!
Hi you mentioned Sam longson I used to work there also 76 to 85 just wondering what year u worked there.
Hi Mick i was there from may of 1985 to September of 1989.
Where is this drive?
Its heading South out of Buxton to Hillhead,
Aaaaahh the smell of Diesel first thing of a morning
a common pepple separated by a Ocean and a language, but Cummins is a language all its own
Regarding the lack of corrosion in the water system, did Cummins use DCA on the NH220?
This one definitely has the DCA filter fitted. I cant say if all of them got it fitted. I can say a lot were bypassed or the filter was neglected and not changed. I am confident that mine has been changed on a regular basis, as it was a Fleetgaurd item and decent condition, given the time it had been parked up. Additionally the cooling system still had good antifreeze it it. I checked the antifreeze when i bought the lorry and left it in for the duration of it being parked up. And you are right its been too long but I have had a bit on.
Looking forward to the resumption of ‘normal’ service, it’s been too long 👍
Indeed it has….!
Your a braver man than me Sean doing that one up, nice spinner though.
Cracking bit of kit that Sean and it's got a right motor on it 👍.
Cheers Dean.

Missing the Foden Videos😌
Had a bit of a struggle getting some crank seals to finish the next installment, and I just need the weather to dry out a bit more so that I can paint the engine. There will be another one soon👍
@@cabacs8062 👍 hopefully a rolling chassis soon
I miss the smell , my first 8 wheeler was a Foden with a Gardner 180 . In the winter we would park them up in the shed at night during freezing temperatures in Kilsyth. When they were started at 7 am you couldn’t see in the shed after we’d left for at least an hour 😂
Well I’ve watched all of your films and have enjoyed every minute ! Thanks for posting them, they’re extremely informative. It’s very satisfying to see the final results of all the hard work that you’re putting into each piece of this restoration. Can’t wait for the next instalment and in particular when you finally make a start on the reassembling process. I would love to be capable of carrying out a restoration project like this. Keep em coming 👍
I’m really enjoying these videos. Is there anything you can’t do ?😁 This S80 is going to be something else!!
Thanks for the comment, I really appreciate it. In answer to your question I have surveyed the rest of the household and the answers appear to be empathy and sympathy. Personally I think its work on Italian commercial vehicles - but strangely I do like their cars!!

@@cabacs8062 did you give putting it in Tilcon Colours any further thoughts?IMO perfect for the Foden although not Technically correct 😞 Tarmac Green would be another colour
I did yes. even had a look for a sleeper cabbed Tilcon unit and couldn't find one. I think she will be going into the same livery as the Fleetmaster.
