Repairing the oil leaks on the Foden Fleetmaster 8 speed Gearbox.

  • The Fleetmaster has done around 2000 miles, over the last couple of years, having gone back on the road properly for the first time since the mid 90's. Inevitably some items that cannot be readily seen during restoration will manifest themselves as the vehicle is used. This gearbox leak is a great example of something that has failed in this way.

    Fantastic you kept this Foden running, especially with a reliable Gardener. May I suggest on the gearbox, to drain the oil, flush the swarf out and refill. This is just in case it damages any other bearings. Also, while you have the input shaft out, replace the inner bearing too. For the cost of the bearing, it would be worth it, while you have it apart. It is like replacing a clutch and not replacing the rear engine main seal, when it is easy to get to. I wish you the best of luck keeping it running for many years to come 😀👍

      Hi Bill, great advice!! The bearing in the fly wheel was replaced about 2000 miles ago, when I originally built the lorry, so decided not to do it again this time. As you say the cost of the bearings is not too bad, its just time we are short of!!

    Love watching your great videos, and pleased people are keeping these great British trucks alive! I've got a mint condition fleet master operators manual ( sure you've already got one) I'd be glad to send you somehow to go with your truck if you wanted it!

    Nice to see you back, another interesting video 😊.
    Reference your comments about alignment helping the driving experience, I recently discovered castor adjustment shims. They, and alignment, made a vast improvement to my lorry.
    Every day is a school day 😂

      Glad you are still enjoying the Foden projects. Must admit I haven't used caster adjustment shims, although the S80 had one on the the N/S under the front spring, I had assumed this was to counter the throw of the engine.
      I was genuinely surprised how much difference the tracking made, equally i was surprised how much difference the 140w oil seems to have made to the gear change. Either its slowing the box more quickly helping engagement of the next gear or its just the fact that the box is running so much better with the new bearing. As always, thanks for the comment very much appreciated.

    Great job. When that bearing went on my S80 tractor, it was a struggle to get in and out 4th gear.
    It’s a fairly early one like your, and had the thin case gearbox like your S80 does. Had the option to use a thick case for the rebuild so dis so. You can see that the gearbox in the fleetmaster has the thicker case.

      They main improvements I got with that job were obviously it stopped the oil leak, but it also stopped it jumping out of overdrive in 8th and as you say made the change between 3rd and 4th gears much easier.

      @ I never had an oil leak, just the poor change. I don’t think the bearing collapsed.
      20 years on, the main shaft Allen bolt came loose and a full rebuild followed…

      I cant remember which box it was now but either the S80 or the Fleetmaster had the broken bolt on the end of the main.

    I’ve had good luck in the past splitting bearing races by running a bead of weld around them,that said,this method works best on outer races.

    • @cabacs8062
      @cabacs8062  Год назад +1

      Hi Topline. I did consider welding the bearing as like yourself I have used this for outer tracks. The reason I didn't go with that method on this occasion was (1) That I was concerned that it would shrink the track onto the shaft rather than relax it. (2) I had already had the track very hot to no avail (3) if the track was shrunk further onto the shaft I would still have to use the method that I used. (4) Perhaps most importantly, I was concerned about weld splatter damaging the surfaces including the threads. Appreciate the comments and tip - a;ways useful to exchange ideas thanks.

    On the throw out bearing housing it looks like there should be a grease nipple there,,But it's missing,,

    • @cabacs8062
      @cabacs8062  Месяц назад

      Hi, the bearing has the grease nipple at the bottom of the bearing housing. if you look at 35:50 on the video you can get a better view of it. The gearbox has a plate at the bottom so that the grease nipple can be accessed during routine maintenance. Additionally the cross shaft has a grease nipple on either side, they are critical to ensure light (ish) operation of the pedal and prevent seizing which could cause the clutch to slip and in turn cause accelerated clutch wear,
