- As someone who is more familiar with Fuller and ZF gearboxes, I had always been a bit concerned about replacing the output seal on the Foden gearbox. The main difference is that the output flange on Fuller and ZF gearboxes are retained externally by a large nut or a couple of bolts, dependent upon gearbox model. Whereas the Foden gearbox flange is integral to the output shaft, thus necessitating some dismantling of the epicyclic selector mechanism. However having now completed the task I can say that its an easy job to complete with no special tools needed, save for a home made bracket to aid assembly of the shaft and seal. Furthermore I would go as far to say that this method of securing the flange and seal for the output is probably superior to a large single nut external fastener, simply because the thread is attacked by the elements, this cannot happen with the Foden method.
