Topic 49: Transconductance Comparison
I made a mistake writing the equation for dynamic emitter resistance re. I think I might be slightly dyslexic (I do transpose digits, etc. fairly often). Anyway, the emission coefficient (eta) multiplies the numerator V_T and not the denominator Ic as shown. Sorry about the confusion.
This is a more qualitative video comparing the transconductance of the devices we've been looking at so far in this series of videos. The curves for the MPF201, LND150, DN2535, 2N7000 and the 2N3904 are graphed on the same scale, making comparisons particularly easy.

    I am a learning electronics by myself from all the sources that I can get mainly because life gets in the way to do it properly but my main drive was always because I wanted to fix my things and modify them to my needs. Over the years I collected enough knowledge to be able to do the basic things but my knowledge is scattered and one of those points is silicon and diods. I always wondered how does it work I just acceoeted that it works and that's it but man what a beautiful and simple explanation you gave here so accessible and simple to understand. Simply great! As I said I was wondering how it works but I could never imagine that its such clever trick behind it. I love it!!! Thank you for making your videos!

    I definitely prefer "Depletion Mode" MOSFETs for audio applications. Like JFETs, they work closer to how vacuum tubes do. You should do a video like this on those.

    Hi there, i wanna limit inrush current to the "big" capacitors after the bridge rectiefier using mosfet's (witch is what i got at hand). If you would measure the voltage with a LM393 comparator and a CD4013 or and gate as latch to open the N channel mosfet on the positive rail fully. How would i apply this "trigger" to the mosfet on the negative rail? .... with close to 40 Volts difference. It works on the simulator, accept due to high voltage difference the mosfet on the negative rail is opening much faster (if you would use a capacitor delay). How can i tackle this?

      @@Electronics4Guitar i tried various things, like transistor Totem Pole, to shift the voltage difference, it works, but the same problem, it would be cool if it could be done with a single timing capacitor than one on each of both rails.

    27:34, i made such circuit in simulator a put a static voltage on the input, the reason is to find the max current a particular transistor would give according to it datasheet, witch is 1.5 amps for BD137, BD140, how much watts would the amplifier be rated for if powered from bi-polar 15V transformer, What kind of speaker could i hook up? it's pretty weird since all speakers are either 4 or 8 Ohm's. Would be cool if you made a video on how to "design" the circuits around the transformer including the capacitors as wel filters to not pollute the grid with noise and stuff, how much capacitance you need, some guy is building amplifiers and uses 66000uF for 150 watts of power and sells these for +50.000€

    It's also possible to remove the "voltage divider" to bias the transistor, you take voltage follower configured opamp with potmeter on the non inverted input as voltage divider, attach a Giga Ohm resistor and diode on the opamps output in series to the Base of the transistor, you can make it amplify like 4, but not really centered.

      You might try the BF256, J111, J109 and J112 N-Channel and J175 P-Channel. They’re cheap and places like DigiKey have them. There are lots on Amazon too but I don’t know about their authenticity.

      The MPF102 has an especially wide variation of parameters on paper but I rarely see any with Idss over 10 mA. Most of the newer JFETs have a narrower spread.

    I have build clones of filters, Korg MS-20, Roland Jupiter 8 using BF256 and they sound awesome. Indeed a difficult component, but the simulators help lot. Thnx for the good video, i saved it for reviewing again later

      Thanks. Im a big fan of JFETs. I’m going to measure the Idss and Vgs(off) for a bunch of MPF102s in the next video and plot the average characteristics based on those numbers. I might do this with several different JFETs in a future video. Based on the BF256 specs, I suspect the data I compiled for the MPF102s would be nearly identical for the BF256.

      @@Electronics4Guitar Would you compare vs Mosfets? i got BF256 and MMBFJ202. aswel Rohm SH8MB5 and Advanced Linear devices ALD1105 (quad), the simulator says you can build a differential amp with these, but haven't send out the PCB yet.

      @@Electronics4Guitar Since we're talking about FET's, i have "designed" a automatic gain reduction in the simulator 2 days ago to protect a push pull amp exceeding the limits of the BD137/140, PSU, i wanna build, it uses FET's, it works, but did this without the math, would you like to help to make it accurate?

      @@AnalogDude_ I will be covering a bit of MOSFET stuff in a few weeks or so. The ALD1105 looks like an interesting device but I haven’t used them before. I’ve got a ton of side projects going and will be pretty busy for a while so I can’t promise I help you much with your design at this time. Keep me posted on your progress.

      @@Electronics4Guitar Well, i can make a video and make it only visible to you. Like i said, i have drawn up a synth modular differential amp. vca with current mirror in the sim, than i switched to mosfets in the simulator and the ALD1105 offers a quad package. it's expensive.

      I agree. But I haven’t covered direct coupling in the tutorials yet. This amplifier was designed as an exercise in the analysis of capacitively coupled circuits. And it demonstrates the problems with using capacitively coupled, class-A amplifiers when large signal swings are desired. I’ll get to direct coupling soon.

    I watched David Butler's video on Atoms several times, learned how they found out about the circumference, size of the atom and so. But how did they find out how many electrons would orbit a atom? ... and in what orbits. An amazing discovery that if you pollute pure silica with different elements it would have such properties.

    Why would you do all this trouble and not get a nice NE5534 or OPA1677 to connect this to the push pull setup or C4? Feedback from the push pull output to the inverted input of the opamp and your crossover distortion should be solved not using the diodes, like the push pull circuit from the known encyclopedia. tried it in the sim, turning this opamp to voltage follower and the zero cross distortion returns, I have also drawn a Sziklai push pull from thin air, but now i learned about R12, R13, C6, C7. I just used 1M to pull up / down for R10, R11 to the bases to force them transistor closed. The Falstad sim shows it works fine.

      I’ll put the transistors in the feedback loop after I cover that concept in the context of op amps. And I’ll show why that isn’t necessarily the panacea that it would appear to be. There’s a method to my madness. All in good time.

      @@victimovtalent6036definitely. The output stage could be operated from a bipolar supply with no modification (you could eliminate the output coupling cap). The two driver stages would need to be redesigned though and would still require capacitive coupling.

      @@Electronics4GuitarI think your presentation is really good. Heavy on the maths, which I struggle with sadly. I kinda felt like I walked into a room and was like woah, this is all way above me. What even is beta 🤷‍♂️ yeah it’s that bad. I love fixing stuff but have avoided the maths. I’ll go back to the start of your videos and work on my maths a bit I guess 😬. Great content though, thank you !

      @@Mark_C1hi, Mark. Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I definitely approach this stuff from a very technical perspective. What I envision is to eventually cover the whole field from basic RC circuits through transistors, op amps, vacuum tube amps and effects circuit operation and design. I also do plan to add a few videos that are more descriptive at some point as well. I taught EE for nearly 40 years so it’s hard to get out of that mindset. I definitely will keep the use of calculus to a bare minimum though 👍🏻 As far as transistors go, you might start with Video 12 and see if it helps with some basic concepts. I probably should have done an introduction to transistors first but I couldn’t help but jump right into it. Again, thanks for the feedback. And hopefully some of the presentations will be informative and thought provoking.

    Sounds a lot like my experiences with Darlingtons back in the day as well. I always seemed to have better luck with Sziklais for whatever reason. Back in the 70s I would twist my dad’s arm to take me to a hamfest once a year and I’d try to find a good deal on power transistors, heat sinks, filter caps, etc.

      I think the bdx33/34 were low saturation voltage designed for switching only nothing linear, didn't know what that was at the time, I just used whatever I could get, most of what I made back then didn't work well!

    i when i was a kid with no money (early 90,s)i tried to use bdx33b and bdx34b as audio output , the bdx33/34 were plentiful from scrap barcrest fruit machine boards i was getting free, they use them to drive the lamp matrix ,they sounded really clear and livelly and werent oscillating but i could never control their thermal runaway. went to hitachi mosfets taken from dead disco / pa amps after that

I play electric guitar and recently I'm eagerly into electricity and audio circuits .Searching online, I found your book and reading the first couple of pages, I decided to read it deeply and seriously. I found it extremely great. It's a great book. Easy to understand, in plain English, supporting both solid state and vacuum tube electronics. Thank you for the book and being here in RUclips.       Hey there. First, thanks for watching! I hope to cover some more advanced material including state space and LaPlace based analysis eventually. Probably not until after I’ve done transistors, op amps, vacuum tubes, modulation etc. first though. But since you asked I’ll do my best to work it in. Again, thanks for the feedback 👍🏻
