Solid and valid reasons. I left this year after 5 years and people being sociable was a big reason. Among others. I do miss Japan for the few friends I've made and safety and freedom I get as a woman, but being home 4 months now, I realize my mental health is so much better. People on this side of the world are just far nicer and more sociable than over there.

I agree 100% with the hierarchy of values. I value the social harmony and the peace and quiet that Japan offers as I am a introvert who wants to live in peace, instead of the hyper individualization that you see in America my home country. In fact I have become quite angry and bitter about the sad state of affairs in America with the horrible healthcare, gun violence, trash everywhere, homelessness widespread and sky high prices of literally everything including basic ability to shelter and feed yourself. America has become a place that is only for the rich who can live in isolated bubbles away from homeless. I simply place much higher values on what Japan values such as the social harmony, safety, efficiency and reasonable freedoms, but not excessive amounts to the point of self destruction that I see in America. I suppose and that explains why I find Japan to be a much better place to live. As a note most other western countries such as Canada and most of Europe also value social harmony more then America as America has become a very very extreme example radical individualization, you can do what ever you want no matter how others are impacted, such as health insurance companies denying claims for profit even though they know full well it will cost innocent life's but they do not care. Other western countries are a good choice if you want a little more harmony still in a western culture but definitely not on the same level. I do value a strong balance as too much of a focus on the community leads to tyranny and too much of a focus on the individual leads to anarchy. Both anarchy and tyranny lead to bad results through strong men taking charge just in different methods. The balance is essential to maintain order.

With regards to globalisation, I am optimistic that Japan will probably maintain the 'charm' that makes it so appealing, simply because it is so hard for foreigners to integrate even despite them relaxing a lot of laws. Sure there are more tourists and foreigners in Japan now more than ever but the revolving door is very real, for many people they'll stay maybe a few years max before returning home. It really takes a huge amount of effort to settle down there, and I don't envision this changing for the simple reason of the language being the biggest barrier to entry. I say with complete confidence that Japanese is the hardest language in the world to start learning, it gets 'easier' and more intuitive with time but most people will frankly never get to that stage. And because of keigo, which you touched on, 99% of foreigners simply are not equipped with the ability to adapt to corporate situations and hence sustain a working life in Japan - stuff like tatemae and 'kuuki wo yomu' are very intrinsic and say a lot about Japan being such a subtext-driven society. I tend to ignore all the scaremongering you see online about Japan losing what makes it Japan, but realistically there are still 100+ million Japanese in the country (more including diasporas around the world) so there's not really a massive risk of them going 'extinct.' For reference, Japan has like 30-40 million more people than the UK, and the UK is supposedly 70% 'British' (i.e., ethnically native Brits) yet we don't see nearly as much outcry for British people going extinct. That said, there is a need for Japan to become more adaptable in the modern world, but I am sure it will find a way to thrive again. It still produces a lot of technological and cultural exports that generate a lot of revenue, and if anything it may be becoming more of a tourism-driven economy, so maybe they'll need to capitalise on this tourism boom rather than blocking off views to Mount Fuji lol

I live in California for more than 50 years. “Not upsetting anyone” as a social value mean Consideration and Respect for others. You can tell right away why i can’t wait to leave the US. Guns, crimes, homelessness, dirty politics, discarded elderly, unaffordable cost of living, more unaffordable cost of medical services. I’m not complaining. I have my own beautiful home in a safe neighborhood. I retired and have enough money to roam the world. I am fully covered by my health insurance. No, I am not complaining, just sharing my observations. You lived in Japan for 6 years. I live in the States for 53 years. Wherever you decide to settle, my best wish to you. But be aware, you can be homeless in the US easily but not so to get your million $$. I will return to Kyoto this fall. I’m so grateful for Japan to be what it is just like the Pros list you provide, Connor. Last but not least, if I was 20 again, I would surely go to school, work, and live in California again. No doubt about that. You see, our priorities change often with age. 😊

Thanks for this good video! And I can agree almost everything you say in this video. I also miss Japan way too much. That's why I am aiming to move there again. I also understand that for foreigners it's very hard to make friends in Japan or other countries. Maybe in some places it is easier where are lots of expats or you have common language with the others living in the same place. I am currently living in Spain, and I can agree that. However in case of Japan, it has been vice versa. Good Japanese skills and attitude has been my way to get Japanese friends. In Spain I see that even with the other expats it's quite hard to make friends. I feel that they are living in a Western bubble and they are interested only to smoke weed and watch sports or Hollywood movies. I feel like half Japanese inside, so maybe that's also one thing why making Japanese friends has been quite easy for me. In fact it was fun to see that after being away from Japan for 4,5 years, the number of my Japanese friends who are living in Japan had grown quite much and it was impossible to meet everyone during my one month stay. Where are you living now by the way?
