This channel will document our family's bike touring adventures including our 5-month bike tour of Europe starting in Spain and visiting Portugal, France, Italy, Vatican City, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, and England while on sabbatical.
We hope this channel will inspire other bike touring families and other families who don't yet bike tour to start. We think it is the best way to spend a sabbatical as it strengthens your body, mind, and family relationships (despite some difficult times in the moment.)

Cycling Europe - A Family Cycling Adventure
Highlights from our family's 5-month 5600km sabbatical cycling adventure through Europe. We started in Sevilla, Spain in March 2023 and finished at Salisbury, England in August. We began in Spring in Southern Europe and were able to maintain Spring-like climate for most of the trip as we generally cycled North and/or to higher elevation. We cycled through 11 countries (Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Vatican City, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, The Netherlands, Belgium, and England.) and completed the Camino de Santiago (Camino Portugues, Camino Frances in reverse) and Via Francigena (Aosta to Rome) pilgrimmage routes.

we would like to see not just the cycling, but als: preparing food, do shopping , the tent and how it"s bild up and putting up the tent, e love to see that
Now that the playlist link is fixed, you can see a bit of our time off the bikes in the videos in Portugal, towards the beginning of our trip.
Curious as to how many brake pads and inner tubes you went through with all four of you traveling. We have started the vids at the beginner and are working through the whole catalog.
We each changed front and rear brake pads once. Somehow we didn't get a single flat tire for the whole 5 months/5600km!! We used Schwalbe Marathon Plus Tour tires - heavy but reliable.
Great video, small correction, on 19:17, thats still lake lucerne. Stay safe
Thanks!
You probably didn't notice some signs, but at 10:08 in the video, the road between Sisikon and Brunnen is strictly forbidden for cyclists due to its unsafety, and free shuttle buses are available. Anyway, great video thanks for sharing!
Thanks for mentioning this. It seemed out of place that the bike infrastructure was almost non-existent in that section. We did not see any signs indicating this but wish we did! Definitely would have taken the shuttlebus.
Looks like we were there just before the ban took effect. www.erlebnisregion-mythen.ch/en/experiences/summer/bike-bicycle/axenstrasse-closed-for-bikes/
@@pedalpowerfamily Oh, that explains it! :) I cycled there once before-it was the first and surely the last time. That was also some years before the ban.
It's probably a good thing they banned it and even provide shuttle buses. I rode there once and it was really scary 😅
We figured out what we enjoy from your vids, it’s not just the highlights, it’s the struggle as well.
that dangerous section of narrow sidewalk is actually is actually forbidden to ride on and there is a free shuttle bus every half hour. i did the section in the other direction, unfortunately only found out afterwards...
Thanks for your comment. Wow, makes sense. Good to know for next time.
It appears that we were there just before the ban went into place. www.erlebnisregion-mythen.ch/en/experiences/summer/bike-bicycle/axenstrasse-closed-for-bikes/
Amazing video. The views are awesome. Very inspirational. Thanks for sharing. 👍77
Thanks!
Wonderful family footage.
Thanks, we'll have to return to see the all the flowers that you saw.
@@pedalpowerfamily your routing along the North Sea helped us figure out how to get up that way coming from Bruges. Also, how are you able to pull off the repeated cycling vacation, do you live abroad?
It was one 5-month trip while on sabbatical. The kids finished their school year from the road.
How much I envy your great adventure. How great it was to have your family go with you. I have had much shorter excursions that were great. Today most of my journeys are 20 miles or less as that is about all my 97 year old body with electric pedal assist on my recumbent trike is capable of. Thanks so much for putting your trip out for others to enjoy.
Your comment makes me so happy! I can only hope to still have it in me at 97. Well done! 💪🚲
I think your travels are amazing, congratulations on the beautiful family and the courage to continue on the road. 💙
Hello from French-speaking Switzerland, This part of your cycling trip is a dream! I am also in a “butterfly speed” or slow velo tempo. Your daughters performed well and I'm happy for you to see that you still have these fa-mous old rim brake bikes, safe and durable (no rims that crack, nor spokes that break 😉). I use BBBtristop skates which are perfect and inexpensive. As for the sun hat, I have pretty much the same one as you (OR). I look forward to discovering your other steps. Beautiful summer^^
These old bikes still have more adventures in them for sure! We mostly used Kool Stop brake pads but I'll have to try the TriStops. The sun hat is from www.dabrim.com. Happy travels!
You guys are amaising you just keep going over all terains and in all wethers, so inspireing! Great filming too, thankyou!
Thank you very much!
Amazing trip and video, love the drone footage. Viewing from Brisbane Australia.
Daddy is a real happy camper... but your videos are very soothing to watch 😊
Very happy camper indeed! Glad you enjoy them
5:59 yeahhh my hometown, nice video btw
Lovely piece covering our beautiful Isle of Wight. Hope you enjoyed it despite the less than ideal weather. We are normally one of the sunniest parts of the UK 😂. If you ever make it back, some local hospitality awaits and will be happy to help make your visit even more enjoyable. BW Alex.
What a wonderful comment! All we know for sure is that we will continue cycle touring throughout our lives and that we will be sure to get in touch if and when we are in the area. 😊
Cool experience i guess, werde you traveling with e bikes?
No, all leg power.
Amazing journey! Thanks for sharing. Would love to do this one day!
Nice famaily tour and great video, thanks for sharing

Lovely cycling along this coast. I've ridden in both directions many times - and it never disappoints. If you ever ride it again I'd ride down the river from Hoek van Holland to get the ferry between Maasluis and Rozenburg - that way you miss most of the more industrial Rotterdam Port area on the south bank of the estuary.
Good tip! It was neat to see the container ships, but seems like your way is easier if we go back.
That route looks great!
It was! We were originally thinking of going directly up the Isere, but we're glad we took this route instead.
Hi and well done to all of you a great adventure ,and some great videos of you travels 👌👌👌
Thanks, glad you liked them.
Wow. Stunning trip guys. I've been to many of those places and the scenery is amazing. The Tuscan thunderstorms are hellish, but the sun always comes out. Your family will remember that trip always. Well done.
how did you stay in europe for 5 months, I thought visa gives only 3 months?
I am an Irish citizen, so the Schengen rule does not apply to me or my family traveling with me.
good option for the camino beatiful places
did you have reservations for the train and all your bikes? I biked in europe once and the train had no bike space, needed to reserve months earlier. are you camping?
We were able to get a train reservation from Rome to Pisa but not from Pisa to Milan. The train employee said we could stay on to Milan only if there was room. The train ended up being over capacity for bikes but we made it. Several Italians also did not have reservations but everybody made room and nobody complained. We were prepared to switch over to regional trains if necessary but luckily didn't need to. No reservation was needed for the last leg from Milan to Lugano. Later on, we had to fly from Salzburg to Amsterdam because we could not get bike reservations on the German rail. Each country has different rules for different types of trains. After Lugano, we camped every night in Switzerland, the rest of Italy, and Austria until Salzburg. We called ahead 2-3 days in advance but didn't actually need camping reservations as there was always plenty of room.
I wish you would talk more and explain details. Your now in your 4th month in europe, I thought you only can stay for 3 months, how did you stay longer? Where do you stay at night, camping hotels, hostels?
I am an Irish citizen. So neither me nor my family are limited by the Schengen 90-day rule. On the Via Francigena, we mostly stayed at albergues.
You did so well, some of those hills looked quite formidable, but you pressed on. Good for you. It doesn’t look an easy ride. Thanks for sharing it.
Cycling in Austria is magic! I enjoyed the via Claudia Augusta and discovered the magic of cycling through the Alps…love your video, it brings me back to the same experience! 💚
We had such a short time in Austria but it made a big impact. We really want to return for more!
Thank you so much for sharing your family bike adventure with us all! What a wonderful family you are, may God bless you all! 🥰
Really nice bike trails and fantastic landscape. 30 years ago cycling looked quite different in Italy. Those two girls are tough. Few daughters would be able to cope with a dad wearing your hat.
Those two trikes with solar panels in the beginning were in the Sun Trip. And yes that narrow bike lane along the busy road at Lake Lucerne is scary!
There were several other solar-powered bikes at the campground in Andermatt that were part of the same event.
@@pedalpowerfamily Must have been the Solar Power Family. I wish I could go on trips more often. You're very privileged to have a family that shares your passion. I only have three damn cats to keep me home and they don't ride bikes. I'll be lucky if I can do a couple days Alps once every two years or so. I wonder how those with wide panels got through that passage? I built a solar trike myself but it's narrow and the front wheels barely fitted on that bike lane. And I met the Sun Trip too somewhere in France just by pure coincidence. Which made it very confusing for the organizers. Who's that? Why is he going the other way? Take it from me. E-assist may sometimes seem the holy grail. But you constantly watch the battery level instead of the scenery. With all the weight you always need battery. And then you will be the Battery Power Family. But it's better than a Fossil Fuel Power Family.
I’m watching because I’m wondering about, which tyres to fit for the ride. It isn’t muddy at all and not rocky either it would seem. A gravel tyre certainly but the ‘going’ seems easy enough.
We used 50mm tires (Schwalbe Marathon Plus Tour) and there were only 2 very short parts on the path over the Pyrenees that were problematic - one very rocky and another with deep mud. You could use somewhat narrower tires and probably be OK. It can be muddier in places but we generally had good weather when on the dirt trails.
Born nearby Vlissingen and living nearby Rockanje …I saw you enjoyed our cycle patch in The Netherlands. Next year the other side of our country? Greetings from the Netherlands
Still undecided about where to go next time out but it's possible. Cheers!
Wonderful to watch your travels.
What an epic tour , really enjoyed following along, and the new forest my fave cycling destination, thanks
The New Forest heath was just beautiful, even on a cloudy day like we had. The animals kept things interesting too!
It was a pleasure sharing the journey with you. Bravo!
Thanks, we're happy to share it and glad you found it interesting.😀
That was a fantastic adventure, you guys are some real tough cyclists, realy well put together, thankyou!
Thanks! I'll pass that on to the girls for sure. 💪🚴
Epic adventure, well done to you all.
Greetings from Shrewton, and kudos.
Thanks! Cheers!
You captured some amazing Dutch skies ⛅️🌤️☀️⛈️🌩️💨
Agreed! Haringvlietdam was my favorite 8:46
What an epic ending 🎉👏 Congratulations!
Thanks! There will be more to come so stay tuned!
"we climbed the equivalent of the ocean to the top of Mount Everest six times" That's an astonishing statistic! And not getting one puncture?? Were you riding tubeless?
No, we carried spare tubes all that way and never used them.
@@pedalpowerfamily Amazing! Thanks so much for sharing your trip and inspiring others. ☺
Good job! At the Haringvlietdam there's a yearly bike contest called 'tegen de wind in fietsen' - riding against the wind.
Love it! Cycling against the wind is fun in small doses.
On a ordinary bike with no gears!
