Cycle Touring Europe - A Family Adventure
Highlights from our family's 5-month 5600km sabbatical cycling adventure through Europe. We started in Sevilla, Spain in March 2023 and finished at Salisbury, England in August. We began in Spring in Southern Europe and were able to maintain Spring-like climate for most of the trip as we generally cycled North and/or to higher elevation. We cycled through 11 countries (Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Vatican City, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, The Netherlands, Belgium, and England.) and completed the Camino de Santiago (Camino Portugues, Camino Frances in reverse) and Via Francigena (Aosta to Rome) pilgrimmage routes.

Hello from Quebec, Canada ! Congrats for your family trip and thank you so much to share informations. I am planning to ride from Rome to Geneva in april-may (ish). What period of the year were you able to do “Le Petit St-Bernard “ and ride the Via Francigena ? What would be the best timing to do it ? How was it to find lodging on the Via Francigena ? Can you book day to day without reservations ? Thanks in advance ! Martin.

We crossed the pass at the end of May. The pass doesn't open the same day every year so you have to check with the authorities to see when it will open, but it's often open just before June 1st. An alternative is Col du Mont Cenis, which is to the south. Early June was a great time to do the VF because it wasn't yet very hot.

You could also head north from Aosta over the Col du Grand Saint Bernard, but that opens a bit later usually since it is higher elevation.

For lodging, we rarely had reservations and often stayed in pilgrimage accomodations, which you can see here www.viefrancigene.org/en/accommodations-facilities/

Hi, just a comment that we watched your no commentary compilation video of the journey through Europe. It was really well filmed, with the accompanying music soundtrack providing a very relaxing mood. Great to watch. Thought the girls did really, really well too- seemed to be an awful lot of gradients and switchbacks to deal with at times.

Hi again. Quick follow up. We enjoyed the initial compilation episode so much that we watched the entire journey. One per evening before supper. What a pleasure. Really well filmed, just enough commentary to set the scene and found the captions on screen giving locations and features of special interest very informative. Also, the rather hypnotic ambient background music made for a chilled bit of relaxation. Sorry the weather was a bit rubbish for your last few days, but that's an English Summer for you.

Congratulation to all of you to ride the Albula Pass - with luggage! Very interestig video - well made. I hope that I can do it next summer. In Switzerland, in certain regions, people say "Hoi" to greet someone. This greeting is usually used to greet someone you know. However, cyclists are often on first-name terms. This is the only form in English - it's easier.

16:28 That beautiful route with the trees and canal in Belgium is along the Damse Vaart (Damme canal) which links Bruges and Sluis. It’s a relatively new canal for Flanders . Napoleon wanted this canal when he controlled the Low Countries for the safe passage of troops French troops away from the British navy . It was originally meant to go all the way to Breskens and the Scheldt (where you took the ferry across) but only a small part was dug because of his defeat! Eventually the canal from Bruges to Sluis was finished in the 19th century and served as a shipping route. But today it’s used mainly recreationally. History gives us beautiful cycle routes lol. I guess that’s the point why I wrote this since I’m a history (and geography) buff. This route in my opinion with the poplar trees is quite iconic.

Yes, they climbed them all! They are riding Trek 820 bikes but I upgraded the drivetrain components so they have 22/32/44 in the front and an 11-36 cassette in the back to give them much more low end gearing compared to the stock components.

Amsterdam to Katwijk and then 140m up and 140m down? No way! The highest point you may have been would have been +30m and the lowest -6m or so. Oh, and some advice to people who want to do this trip: do it the other way round. That’ll give you the best chance to have the wind coming from behind you most of the time. A couple of hours cycling straight into a fresh breeze will quickly convince you of the soundness of this advice.

As a born and bred Englishman from Canterbury, I'm embarrased by the morons you encountered in Dover. Unfortunately there is an anti-bicycle element here and van drivers are some of the worst. An irrational hatred of cyclists seen as invading the space that some car and van drivers see as theirs to abuse. I have been an avid cyc;ist for over 40 years but also drive with respect for other cyclists as I know what they go through. Nice video. Much of the ground you covered in Kent is very familiar as my own training routes! I'll watch the others in this series with interest.

We didn't let the attitudes of a few impact our trip. We hadn't done a ton of research into biking in England as it was not part of our itinerary when we began our trip. But we were amazed that there were so many areas with cycle paths, dirt roads, and roads with nearly no traffic. Although there were a few areas where we encountered some tight roads with some traffic, on balance, we found the South of England very fun to cycle. Hopefully that comes through in the video.

You probably didn't notice some signs, but at 10:08 in the video, the road between Sisikon and Brunnen is strictly forbidden for cyclists due to its unsafety, and free shuttle buses are available. Anyway, great video thanks for sharing!

Thanks for mentioning this. It seemed out of place that the bike infrastructure was almost non-existent in that section. We did not see any signs indicating this but wish we did! Definitely would have taken the shuttlebus.

@@pedalpowerfamily Oh, that explains it! :) I cycled there once before-it was the first and surely the last time. That was also some years before the ban.

It's probably a good thing they banned it and even provide shuttle buses. I rode there once and it was really scary 😅

How much I envy your great adventure. How great it was to have your family go with you. I have had much shorter excursions that were great. Today most of my journeys are 20 miles or less as that is about all my 97 year old body with electric pedal assist on my recumbent trike is capable of. Thanks so much for putting your trip out for others to enjoy.

Your comment makes me so happy! I can only hope to still have it in me at 97. Well done! 💪🚲
