  • Between June 28th and July 2nd, 2023, our family cycled from Andermatt, Switzerland to Vaduz, Liechtenstein visiting Lucerne and several Swiss lakes:
    - Vierwaldstättersee (Lake Lucerne)
    - Zugersee
    - Zürichsee (Lake Zurich)
    - Obersee
    - Walensee
    We then boarded a train to take us down to Thusis, which will be our jumping off point for Albulapass in the next video.
    NOTE: Due to safety concerns, bikes were banned from the section between Sisikon and Brunnen/Ingenbohl starting July 11 2023, a few days after we passed through. There is a free shuttle bus for cyclists. More information here: www.erlebnisregion-mythen.ch/...
    This was part of a 5 month long family bike tour of Europe we did on sabbatical.

    I'm from Liechtenstein and i bike commute durimg the whole year. It's almost aĺways windy and 90% of the times its headwinds for me because the wind direction chamges twice a day.
    But those tailwind days make up for it :)
    Great video and suxh a nice family trip!
    Happy riding!

      That reminds me of an old joke about what parents tell their kids: "In my day, we walked to school and back in the snow - uphill both ways!" :)

    The motor-vehicles spoil so much. :( Though it's great to see so many trains. Switzerland is one of the best countries for getting around by train.
    I'd love to hear more about the food from the places you've traveled through.
    "Albula Pass"... wait what? 😯

    • @pedalpowerfamily
      @pedalpowerfamily  5 месяцев назад +1

      It was only that one area that was difficult and only for a few kms. Even on that section, the bike facilities were great on 80% of it. Hopefully they'll work to fill in the gaps because it is a safety issue. I agree regarding the Swiss trains - plus they're so photogenic.
      In Switzerland, we camped every night and never ate in a restaurant due to the cost. Their campgrounds were the most expensive of the whole trip but they were very nice.
      Yes, Albulapass is next! 🏔️🚴‍♂️

      @@pedalpowerfamily I'd love to hear you talk about how the countries on your trip differed regarding biking safety (something that many people considering a euro-trip would be interested in knowing). You say your trip includes the UK, and being someone from there, I can only assume it will come last. There is so much hatred against people on bikes here. :(
      Looking forward to seeing your Albulapass section. I've watched so many train videos of that route, it'll be great to get a different perspective.
      Thanks for sharing your experience!

    Those two trikes with solar panels in the beginning were in the Sun Trip. And yes that narrow bike lane along the busy road at Lake Lucerne is scary!

    • @pedalpowerfamily
      @pedalpowerfamily  Месяц назад

      There were several other solar-powered bikes at the campground in Andermatt that were part of the same event.

      @@pedalpowerfamily Must have been the Solar Power Family. I wish I could go on trips more often. You're very privileged to have a family that shares your passion. I only have three damn cats to keep me home and they don't ride bikes. I'll be lucky if I can do a couple days Alps once every two years or so.
      I wonder how those with wide panels got through that passage? I built a solar trike myself but it's narrow and the front wheels barely fitted on that bike lane. And I met the Sun Trip too somewhere in France just by pure coincidence. Which made it very confusing for the organizers. Who's that? Why is he going the other way?
      Take it from me. E-assist may sometimes seem the holy grail. But you constantly watch the battery level instead of the scenery. With all the weight you always need battery. And then you will be the Battery Power Family. But it's better than a Fossil Fuel Power Family.

    Great video. I was wondering about the bike route along the Walensee from Weesen to Walenstadt. It looks mostly flat but apparently there is at least one steep hill. How challenging was it?

    • @pedalpowerfamily
      @pedalpowerfamily  3 месяца назад

      Yes, it was mostly flat. The steep hill was very short and only gained about 25m. It was a short but intense challenge on a fully loaded bike!

      @@pedalpowerfamily good to know and thanks for the tip! I've used both ridewithgps and googlemaps to plan the route and both show huge elevation gains but I think the data ignores the tunnels and assumes the route is over the mountains.

    • @pedalpowerfamily
      @pedalpowerfamily  3 месяца назад

      That's right! I remember now that Komoot showed the same thing. The path was right up against a cliff in places so I think all of the mapping software gets confused about the elevations in that situation.

    that dangerous section of narrow sidewalk is actually is actually forbidden to ride on and there is a free shuttle bus every half hour. i did the section in the other direction, unfortunately only found out afterwards...

    You probably didn't notice some signs, but at 10:08 in the video, the road between Sisikon and Brunnen is strictly forbidden for cyclists due to its unsafety, and free shuttle buses are available. Anyway, great video thanks for sharing!

    • @pedalpowerfamily
      @pedalpowerfamily  12 дней назад

      Thanks for mentioning this. It seemed out of place that the bike infrastructure was almost non-existent in that section. We did not see any signs indicating this but wish we did! Definitely would have taken the shuttlebus.

      @@pedalpowerfamily Oh, that explains it! :) I cycled there once before-it was the first and surely the last time. That was also some years before the ban.

      It's probably a good thing they banned it and even provide shuttle buses. I rode there once and it was really scary 😅
