Marathon Tempus Irae Redux #16 Gauntlet, 2024-06-18
Tempus Irae Redux still hasn’t been released; not only are a few bug fixes still left, but I’ve temporarily taken leave of my senses and decided to compose some original level music for it. This video previews the first such track. (Note: The mix is not final.)
Being coy about my influences is not in my nature, so I’ve named it “Ambiēns aquātica”. This is Latin for “Aquatic Ambience”, the name of a legendary David Wise track from Donkey Kong Country that directly inspired it.
I have a confession: I’ve never played a Donkey Kong Country game, and only first heard “Aquatic Ambience” on 2024-06-11 because of a Charles Cornell video that was ostensibly about Kōji Kondō’s (also brilliant) music ...

      @@TheMuslimMan1337 i’ll give you the same hints we’ve given several other people: 1. barring some extraordinary fluke, it should still be accessible from the final save you’ll have made on “The Arch of Time” 2. the credit terminal (which takes you to the secret level) is clearly visible earlier in the level 3. the path to the credit terminal is also hidden in plain sight - the overhead map may be especially useful if you still need help beyond that, i can provide an actual spoiler, but i think those hints should suffice. good luck!

      You’re probably better off asking the runner on his own channel: ruclips.net/channel/UCPkE-iu6JaWTxuOTwWF5QCg In fact, he posted a film of this level (on Kindergarten) a few months ago: ruclips.net/video/mZi09ucWz28/видео.html That said, the technique is known as “grenade jumping”, “grenade climbing”, or “grenade hopping”. This is generally accomplished in _M1_ by running forward and firing the AR’s primary and secondary triggers (in _M2_ and _M∞,_ it’s often more easily accomplished by running backwards; see ruclips.net/video/2S2u6RLauxw/видео.html for more).

      I’ll just quote the album liner notes ( 1drv.ms/b/s!AuD0MykSsmaRqHp4u_8cmb4OF72b?e=u0LPx5 ): “This song’s main drum machine pattern is very blatantly stolen from the song that taught everyone what gated reverb was in the first place (‘In the Air Tonight’, of course). Then again, the pattern was apparently taken from a Roland CR-78 demo, but nonetheless, I give Phil Collins an acknowledgement since I very definitely did steal that drum fill from him. I doubt I even need to tell you what drum fill it was - you’ve already guessed.”

    "A Chore for the Lost" is a masterpiece that continues to elude my understanding, even after all these years. I meant to mention that I kinda wish I’d known you were doing that “Swirls” video so I could’ve uploaded some newer and more exciting footage for you to use, but it’s probably not worth redoing the video over that. If you do anything else like that, let me know. ¹Please excuse the terrible pun. I didn’t even notice it until after I’d written it, and now I can’t bring myself to erase it. Oh and thanks for even knowing about my vague "homage" to Swirls, I figured nobody watches my shit anyway, so why not take some extreme liberties paying "homage" to my favorite Marathon theme. Man, I have made a lot of attempts at being more faithful to the the song; I've tried tons of variations for solo guitar, it never seems to sound very "rich" and "atmospheric" in guitar format, so I never released them. If you're actuallly interested, I would give it another try and use your footage, thank you very much!

      By no means all of it, but I did compose this track (and a few others that are slated for inclusion once I write level scripts for them). I also remixed the level music for “Lather, Rinse, Repeat”, made a few edits to the music for “Il grande silenzio” and ”I Can Feel It”, and mastered/remastered the entire soundtrack. (In addition, I worked on a metric ton of music for _Eternal_ 1.3 - I don’t know when last you played it, but the current soundtrack is over seven hours long, and I have primary artist credits on about eighty minutes and featured artist credits on slightly more than that. That’s in addition to having [re]mastered every version since 1.2.) And no problem. If memory serves, I got a notification from you @’ing me in the video description - I don’t know if I’d have known you’d made the video otherwise. I’ve made… a metric ton of _Marathon_ soundtrack arrangements ( aaronfreed.github.io/discography.html ), probably more than anyone else on the planet at this point. Some are much, much more faithful than others. Sometimes I find it a lot more interesting when a cover deviates heavily from the original in some way while still remaining recognizably based on it - Jimi Hendrix’s “All Along the Watchtower”, Manfred Mann’s “Blinded by the Light”, Johnny Cash’s “Hurt”, and Disturbed’s “The Sound of Silence” are all very, very different from the originals, but are just as well-known now (at least among listeners of a certain age), if not more so. I’d say it’s worth experimenting until you find an approach that satisfies you.

      @@MarathonVidmaster Hot damn, it looks like I hit the jackpot today 'cause I've been contemplating all sorts of Marathon-for-Guitar-related projects. Not necessarily exact copies of the soundtracks, but "repurposing" the motifs in some sort of garage-y alternative rock context. Anyway, I'll check your discography now. FWIW the piano version of "Swirls" in Eternal is one of my favorite pieces of video game music ever, and I've also been contemplating ripping off the music for the first level of Phoenix, just haven't figured out a good way to play it on guitar yet. And yes, deviation from the original in all those covers you mentioned, that's about the that level of deviation we're talking about. However, if I ever manage to figure out a way to play the Marathon soundtrack music that sounds even halfway faithful to the original on solo guitar, then I would certainly try a straight cover.

      i haven’t released it yet; it needs one further bug fix before i consider it fit to release. the bug is actually in the engine itself - Triggers.monster_killed is not called when a monster kamikazes - but i may attempt to write a very hacky workaround if the Aleph One developers don’t fix it soon.

      > THIS IS FANTASTIC Thanks, but… > FROM THE CREATORS OF MARATHON PHOENIX This isn't true. To put it simply: Phoenix is RyokoTK’s game to the same extent that Apotheosis X is hypersleep’s. To elaborate further: The only people that contributed to both games in _any_ sense are hypersleep (ApX: director, ultimately made the final call for almost every aspect of the game and had direct input into most of them; Phoenix: a couple of his weapon designs wound up in Phoenix for reasons not worth recounting here), CryoS (ApX: worked on the level “Sky Burial” and the animation; Phoenix: wrote about half of the OST), and me (ApX: Lua, some of the sounds; Phoenix: remastered the OST), and two of those connections are extremely flimsy. Indeed, just to pick three examples almost at random, I could name stronger connections between _Apotheosis X_ and _Eternal_ (CryoS, hypersleep, General-RADIX, and I all contributed in some sense to both games), or between _Eternal_ and _Tempus Irae_ (some of Forgeflow’s graphics are worked into _Eternal,_ to say nothing of my and others’ work on _Tempus Irae Redux_ - the scripting underpinning both games is almost identical), or between _Eternal_ and _Rubicon_ (there has been quite a bit of connection between their teams over the years), and it would _still_ be doing a grave disservice to any of those games’ creators to say they’re “from the creators of” any of the other. The closest you’ll get to being able to draw such a connection between _Apotheosis X_ and another game will be with _Where Monsters Are in Dreams,_ once that comes out - almost everyone that worked on _ApX_ is now working on _WMAiD,_ but _WMAiD_ is much more a collaborative effort where _ApX_ is ultimately very much the work of an auteur. But to return to my point: put succinctly, speaking of “the creators” of these games obscures the fact that probably over half the work for each of these games was probably one person’s doing - and a different person for each game. _Phoenix_ is RyokoTK’s game every bit as much as _Apotheosis X_ is hypersleep’s, if not even more so, and it does a grave disservice to two of the most skilled and hardest-working game developers I have the privilege of knowing to state that “the creators” of both games are the same. Please stop repeating this; it is flagrantly misleading _at best._

      Yes: eternal.bungie.org (I recommend getting the development release at this point) You’ll also need a standalone build of Aleph One to play it: alephone.lhowon.org/download.html That said, there are graphics plugins to make the trilogy look quite a bit higher-res.       The whole OST is here (timestamped for this exact track): ruclips.net/video/KczNQR_K5Qc/видео.html “Soundtrack for mod for obscure Mac game from 1995” is not the sort of thing I would expect Shazam to recognize. It _might_ know Kevin MacLeod’s tracks, since they’re probably not _just_ used in _Phoenix,_ but I doubt it’ll know any of CryoS’ tracks.

      It’s a script aperturegrillz wrote (that I’ve since debugged a bit). See the description for a bit more info. I’ll release it more formally once I’ve debugged a couple remaining issues with it. It makes me think of RPGs way before it makes me think of _Destiny_ - _Final Fantasy_ and _Dragon Quest,_ two series I grew up with, were doing this sort of thing 25+ years before _Destiny_ existed.
