  • Testing out my music on this Jason Jones classic. The mood is a bit different, but it still works. My Marathon arrangements are available at simplici7y.com... - or see aaronfreed.git... for my complete discography.
I found this level a lot harder to vid than “Bob-B-Overcooked” (from hellpak; see • BRUTAL MARATHON: HELLP... for my film) for two big reasons: a. M1 fighters attack 33% faster than M2/∞ fighters; b. the can at the start of “Bob-B-Overcooked” is a huge help.
My successful run involved me trying a YOLO strat at the start of the level and running to a different room where I felt the terrain put me at less of a disadvantage. This worked, but just barely. I spent about five minutes with zero health. This merits an explanation.
In Marathon, players die if their health goes below zero. If you have zero health, a single hit of anything that does damage kills you, without question, unless it’s of damage type “energy drain”, which has the bizarre property that it never strips your shields below zero (this has to have been intentionally programmed).
However, the above applies only to players. Monsters die if their health is zero. Why the difference? Probably only Jason Jones can say. If he even remembers.
In any case, I wanted to be able to show off that cool opening, so I played the rest of the level fairly cautiously - besides using only fists. (The only weapon available to me would’ve been the pistol, anyway.) I didn’t get the ‘success’ message, but that’s quite difficult to pull off, and I was trying not to rely on guides. I might go for it later - this level is difficult, but fun.
Add-ons used to render this film:
    Tim Vogel & Jay Faircloth’s textures: github.com/Ale...
    General Tacticus’ weapons: simplici7y.com...
W’rkncacnter’s scenery & monster upscales: lochnits.com/m... (note: I might’ve been using older versions)
    My remastered sounds: simplici7y.com...
    Hopper’s M1A1 HUD plugin: simplici7y.com...
    …I think that’s everything?

This music fits really well, it has lifelike strings and good synth accompaniment. Of course with an 80's Die Hard style drum loop. This is how the Marathon soundtrack should sound.
