I had a Jeanneau 45.2 for quite a few years and was always a bit wary of the forces involved in a gybe. The worst thing that happened to me was when sailing on a beam reach off the Turkish coast a sudden wind shift caused me to gybe the boat to avoid getting too close to the shore. The gybe put too much stress on the somewhat crystalline cast metal gooseneck and broke it. I made a rope lashing to hold it together temporarily, and made up a new gooseneck from aluminium billet with bronze bushes. After that I fitted a boom brake so that all gybes were made in a much more controlled manner. I was glad however that I had a fully battened mainsail with twin line reefing because although it was sometimes hard work I could always reduce sail.
This was very interesting, my prayers to those lost and the survivors, only thing, I did not understand 80% of the nautical terms, we can always learn. Aviation terms I understand very well, also I live by the sea, it's a strange world.
I correctly guessed the failure point was the knot. I wouldn't call these guys well qualified from the practical results of their seamanship. perhaps if these bucks up hobby sailors would have known how to splice a line, or carry adequate supplies in the rope locker, things would have ended differently. the most important seamanship skill is safety, not packing your white pants.
Small risk - heavy impact...... I have a genuine torpedo on a pretty small keel. And enjoying the speed everytime ;)

The same way one couple from USA died on the sea sailing 67 Footer, the same boat No manuail sail control All “automatic on buttons “, no enough winches Etc These sail boats are not real sailing boats These are toys for amateurs …. We used a parasailor for most of our transatlantic crossing. And 2 independent autopilots.. Seems like this we eliminated a bit of risk..

I find thay autohelms are most frequently overpowered by following seas. My autohelm motor is a Raymarine wheel unint. I frequently grab the motor with my hand to make sure that it is not overheating

As soon as I saw the drawing of a mid-boom preventer going to the mid-toe rail (not the bow) I THOUGHT this was going to end poorly. When they tied a rando rope to the too-short preventer line, I KNEW it would end poorly.

50 years of breakages and failures have led me to one indisputable observation.. It will happen at night.
One question, is it toxic? We have lots of birds and fish in our marina, dolphins, sea lions, rays etc. we even had a whale roaming the fairways. So I never use anything toxic, that is ok when you haul out.

I get it . Living in Northern Michigan I see a lot sailers doing some racing with the occasional sail to some where over night . Most are older and done with the cruising but still enjoy sailing . So a day sailing make a lot of sense being easy to sail and comforable.

Appreciate sharing story with such full details. I will put much more attention to steering on such courses. Some people pointed why not to reef? To be honest can't imagine doing that after reaching such waves and windforse in open ocean condition
Yes, Rochna and others are great, but they have known failure modes that you need to watch out for (roll bar fouling and not resetting in all-to-common wind shifts). The ultra solves this problem and a few others. If you anchor a lot and going to blow extra money on anything for your boat, I suggest it be the anchor and anchor shackle. Peaceful nights rest can be priceless.

i've never trusted any sort of preventer. very impressed by the power of the wind when it works its way to the wrong side of the sail. when running in iffy conditions, shorten the sail.
Might be a dumb opinion as I am an offshore sailor but frankly I dont think I am very good at it so my heart rate when being a skipper is usually like 120 when sitting down and calm :-D but anyway - Iam usually sailing boats between 40 to 50ft and when winds go over 30 knots (when running or broad reach) I usually only sail on head sail (reefed genoa or jib). Now it does pull a bit to the side so you have to compensate by steering but it always felt much more safe to me... Not sure if this is the right way though but it always worked for me.
Take it back and get a new one......or just never buy ,from them again
My autopilot is a raymarine AV100. When a quartering sea in 2.5m waves hit the boat it sometimes spins the boat 70 degrees off course to windward. That in itself is not the issue except the autoilot then cuts out, locking the rudder full over. If I am below I do not know that the rudder has locked at full over until the boat goes back on course then 70 degrees the other way & I get a massive gybe, jamming the boom against the preventer ( if it is set) & spinning the boat through 360 degrees.. My solution is to use my Aries, It steers a poor course but always brings me back on line & never cuts out.
Same as a few other comments . 1 Use of auto pilot (vs wind vane ) when and where. 2 These days boom brakes vs preventers or used together . 3 The preventer needs very good under standing. Shock loading can test things to failure . example bowline can weaken by 50%

Great video! As the owner of an aging 45' racer, I'm just flabbergasted by all the GLASS surrounding that big open salon in Bayesian's main cabin! And that was protected by a sliding glass door??? The sliding glass door on my condo leaks whenever a tropical storm or hurricane blows rain directly into it, so how could something like that ever survive submersion? Then if it just slid open on its own when the boat heeled... well, that's pretty-much the story, isn't it? Yes, the weather was extreme, and yes, the crew should have lowered the keel since they had the depth for it, but that door design is almost as silly as screen doors on a submarine. Tragic too to hear about the furniture sliding around and (presumably) blocking the passengers' escape. They did know this was a sailboat, right? EVERYTHING should be bolted down!
This just shows how quickly things can go sideways , no matter how skilled you are. This is a very sad story that the survivors have to live with for the rest of their lives .

Not sure I'd say that a 102 rating is at all sporty for a modern 33' sailboat, especially when you consider this one comes with no headroom and a high end price. And comparing this Saffier to an almost 50-year old Olson or a 25 year old J/110, both of which sell for a small fraction of the Saffier, is ridiculous. Consider the J/88 or J/111, both of which are significantly faster yet have full head room and were offered, at least until recently, at a lower price point. Not a J Boats fanboy, just familiar with their offerings.

in reality the trimaran is better than anything, a catamaran you gain somethings and lose others, the trimaran is just better than everything in every way, the only downside is price and size, peaple think of boat's in length, but a trimaran have 3x more space, for a mono to compete it have to be 3x bigger in length, no one say a 100 feet mono is worse than a 50 because it is bigger... in my mind a trimaran is the same, only if you buy a small catamaran or trimaran this problem is real. for smal boats a mono is just better for the price.

So just curious what the options are in this situation, re the autopilot. It seems the biggest causal issue was the locked steering, is there typically a release or something if that ram jams? Are we all one stuck hydraulic cylinder from hopeless?

Wait, so the AVS is not even 90 degrees, even with the keel fully down? The European RCD requires an AVS of > 95 degrees for category B (offshore) and > 100 degrees for category A (ocean). In fact the Bayesian doesn't even satisfy the > 90 degrees needed for category C (inshore), so its RCD category would be D (sheltered waters). I can't believe it!

Anothr one happened way closer to your home on a Contest killing both owners......Lessons...never trust autopilot in conditions that need intervention within seconds if failure does happen....Second.....boom brakes are invented for a reason and often better then rigging a preventer. Lastly....where your boom traveler goes is of super importance ...for me in cockpit is a total no no
Critical for a preventer: run the line from the end of the boom to the bow, not to the tow rail further back. You want the maximum mechanical advantage, which you get when the preventer is a close as possible to 90 degrees off of the deployed boom centerline. Anything less and you increase the dynamic loads transmitted through preventer line into the deck hardware, increasing the chance of a mechanical failure.
