Build an ADF Instrument for a Flight Sim | C172 #52
The ADF was invented by Henry Non-Directional Beacon in 1492. ADF stands for "Actually Dat Floats", which was exactly what Henry said when his bathtub battleship emitted splashing noise at 350 Khz.

    Hi Trevor, we chatted earlier, how are you doing? How did you get the letters printed out nice? I tried another type of faceplate, drew it myself but the letters were very badly printed. Maybe it's the font (what font did you use?). I'm trying out a piece of your faceplate, still 9 minutes for the print to be ready. Hope to hear from you. Keep up the good work! Update: The piece I printed from your faceplate is not as clear as it should be. Struggling with the letters.... can anyone tell me how to setup my printer to make a nice print? I think the solutions is in the fine adjustment, but what exactly?

    Hello Bob, Bravo and thank you for your videos, I managed to eliminate almost all use of the mouse on the simulation (encoder buttons, LCD, etc.), so cool! However, I have a problem that I can't solve: I want to display the Radio COM frequency on a 7-segment LED but not when starting FSX, only when the battery is activated. How can I make an Output only appear if another Output has a certain value ? In my case therefore, display the Ouput COM only if the Output BAT = 1 ! I tried in the precondition tab but it doesn't work. Thank you in advance for your help. Looking forward to reading you and instructing me or clarifying if my question is not clear... Best regards Serge from France

      Hello Serge! I usually have a separate config row using preconditions for the off status that just reads: ' ' (8 spaces enclosed in single apostrophes) I think your issue may be you are using only a precondition for the on, but it never gets overwritten with the off/blank config row.

    Really, really nice. Here's an idea: since the background heading card is already driven by a stepper motor, it would be cool to optionally link it to the airplane's heading variable, instantly giving a heading-slaved ADF (or even a true RMI, if an VOR/ADF button were added, making the needle point to the bearing "to", when toggled to "VOR" and tuned to a VOR station). Also... ...Now build an HSI! 🙂

    Hi, greetings from Argentina, I am designing a Cessna 172/CT206H simulator by my own and encounter the same issue for the trims. I ve had found a way to sort it up and is just to use an ELECTROMAGNETIC CLUTCH between the motor and the trim wheel. IS INEXPENSIVE and you could find it in Laser Printers like Ricoh, Konika Minolta, Xerox and more, some ones drives with 12vcc 1A others 19vcc 1.5A and almost all drives with 24vcc 2A, check within the manual specs. Some examples for your search: Elegtromagnetic Ricoh Clutch Part N°: AX20-0324 Ricoh Aficio MP 2352SP / 2852 / 3352 Ricoh MP 2553 / 3053 / 3353 STEPPER SOLUTION: Use 1 Nema 17 with 1 driver Polulu a4988 (runs on 12Vdc high torque). Insert the Electromagnetic Clutch Into the nema 17 Shaft and use a relay to drive it (this is because it needs 12/24vdc). Connect the clutch shaft with GEARS (or fixed belt) to the trim wheel, plastic prefered as it would act as a fuse in case something bad happens. Use Enable pin to de-energize the coils and leave the trim free (when not in use). Use a fixed Speed, not to slow and not to high (founded via trial and error with PWM). Connect an encoder into the TRIM shaft and make it TRIM INPUT to mobifligth. Control the Electromagnetic Clutch vía relay (12v/24vdc) Control the relay via Mobifligth (5vdc). Control Driver a4988 via Mobifligth like an stepper motor. (***dont forget to calibrate driver current consumption previously*** ardufocus.com/howto/a4988-motor-current-tuning/) DC MOTOR SOLUTION: Use 1 DC motor with reduction, or planetary gears(commonly used on arduino robot projects) with an H bridge as motor driver. Insert the Electromagnetic Clutch Into the DC motor Shaft and use a relay to drive it (this is because it needs 12/24vdc). Connect the motor with GEARS (or fixed belt) to the trim wheel, plastic prefered as it would act as a fuse in case something bad happens. Connect an encoder into the TRIM shaft and make it TRIM INPUT to mobifligth. Control the Electromagnetic Clutch vía relay (12v/24vdc) Control the relay via Mobifligth (5vdc). Control motor via relay to prevent POWER SPIKES. Control the motor relays via Mobifligth (5vdc). In my case I am aiming for the STEPPER SOLUTION but the trim wheel is going to be mounted directly to the Clutch&Nema17 Shaft on one side, and the encoder (trim input) its going to be atached to the other side of the trim wheel. You could do the same to those levers, I hope it has been useful to you, greetings!

    16-17 seems to be zero 100% seems to be near 700... 50% is therefore 350.... you said you "dictated it to go to 75", but i only see you mapping 698 to 75. The initial error is 698 is NOT 75 more like 100

    Hi. New to all of this. Could you explain why 47 Ohm resistors are used? What are they connecting. Trying to learn more. Thanks!

      Hello! This is for the LEDs inside of the buttons for backlighting, I did the current math for sets of 4 leds

    • @IgorSilveira
      @IgorSilveira 2 месяца назад

      @@CaptainBobSim hey again. Still learning about the maths behind electronics. But does that mean that you are providing only approximately 1V to each LED? I assumed a 20mA draw for each

    • @CaptainBobSim
      @CaptainBobSim 2 месяца назад

      @@IgorSilveira To have it work you'd need to give higher than the forward voltage of the LED (at least 2.7V). I calculated the resistor value to give I believe around 3V, although I don't have my math on me at the moment. You can also use parallel LED resistor calculators online. Another option is to just put in random resistors in until it works (starting at a high value and working down). Not very scientific however.

      @@CaptainBobSim I would really appreciate if you could share a wiring diagram, as I am still learning it is not making much sense to me. Are you using the input voltage of the Arduino to power all LEDs (5V)? Cuz if you are wiring them to be 3 parallel sets of 4 in series LEDs at 3V, they'd require a 4*3V = 12V supply at least. But then no resistor would actually be required as the left over voltage would be 0V. I am probably looking at this all wrong, but if you could help me understand voltage dropping circuits 🙏

The one I have is 2.5.1 and is completely different from yours. Now I do not know how to procede. Can you help me ? Thanks Lucio

      Hello @FranklyVR1 There is more information on connections in the readme of the C172 Project files as well as the MobiiFligth profiles. The Breakout Boards haven't been released yet but send me an email to CaptainBobSim@gmail.com and I can get you some.
