Hi, my name is Alvin Karangizi. I’m a doctor with a passion for running. My channel is about Uganda's running town Kapchorwa located in the east of our country, on the slopes of Mount Elgon. It is home to world class running athletes including Joshua Cheptegei, Jacob Kiplimo and Peruth Chemutai. I started training here in 2022 and love it. I share my experience, learning and topics I’m curious about.

Weekly Elevation Gain of Ugandan athletes | Hills training
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.Месяц назад
If you have watched my previous videos you would know I talk a lot about the hills in Kapchorwa. I do not think the camera views reflect this well and so, in this video, I use data to demonstrate the volume of hills the Ugandan athletes run. I followed one of the elite athletes over a week of his training and monitored his elevation gain. I divide it by his weekly mileage to allow you to compar...
Follow a Ugandan athlete's taper for a half marathon race

Have you ever wondered how East African athletes taper for races? In this video I follow a Ugandan athlete based in Kapchorwa taper for a half marathon race. I ask him about changes he makes to his training load, rest and diet. I provide a log of his training in the lead up to the race. Timestamps Intro 00:30 Training load 02:20 Rest 07:01 Diet 08:54 Race 10:06 Outro 11:44 Videographer Jacob Mu...
How training with Ugandan athletes is changing my perspective on running shoes
Просмотров 7 тыс.2 месяца назад
In this video I discuss how my perspective on running shoes has changed since coming out to train here. I used to own lots of pairs and thought they were key to my running success. However, observing athletes performing so well despite owning way less has made me see shoes differently, more as a tool, one of many factors contributing to being a better runner. I discuss some positives and negati...
Ugandan athletes heart rate on easy runs
Просмотров 62 тыс.2 месяца назад
I have been using heart rate for training since 2021 as a way to keep my easy runs easy. I target a heart rate under my MAF and nearer to zone 2 though I struggle to do this consistently. The athletes in Kapchorwa do the majority of their training as easy runs and do 3 speed/higher intensity sessions per week (track/fartlek/tempo/long runs). I was interested to see their heart rates on their ea...
How and why Ugandan athletes vary altitude in their training
Просмотров 7 тыс.3 месяца назад
I’m back in Kapchorwa, Uganda and sharing more videos about the athletes here and their training. I celebrated Joshua Cheptegei and Peruth Chemutai’s recent Olympic success. Ugandan athletes vary altitude for their different training sessions. I wanted to more about why they do. I show them training at the different altitudes and look at the benefits of this strategy. Abel Sikowo, a member of t...
How talented are Ugandan (Sabiny) athletes?
Просмотров 18 тыс.7 месяцев назад
There is lots of running talent in Kapchorwa, Uganda and in this video I try to demonstrate it. The athletes are dedicated with their training but there is also an element of talent in their success. The majority of the athletes are from the Sebei tribe. It always surprises me when new athletes here are much faster than me in speed workouts and more comfortable at faster paces on their easy run...
Why Ugandan athletes like running watches
Просмотров 3,3 тыс.8 месяцев назад
I noticed early on training here that the athletes really like their running/gps watches. It's a privilege owning one here as many of the unsponsored athletes struggle to afford them and they are also not readily sold in Uganda. Their use of the watches is not entirely similar to what I had observed with other athletes and runners. This made me more interested to find out why they found the wat...
Team Uganda prepare for 2024 World Cross Country
Просмотров 3,9 тыс.9 месяцев назад
In recent years, Uganda has become a strong team in world cross country and a competitor to our neighbours in East Africa. In this video, I interview our national coach, Benjamin Njia to find out about the team selection process, the national camp set-up and a bit about their tapering strategy. I also watched the team doing a grass workout 2 weeks before the championships. The taper discussion ...
How Ugandan athletes do their easy runs

I’m back in Kapchorwa and happy to be back to focusing on my training. As a long distance runner, most of your training should be easy running. In this video I share how athletes in Kapchorwa, Uganda approach their easy runs, importantly comparing them to their race pace. I like how they train in groups. Easy exercise done by Ugandan athletes that will improve your running
Просмотров 7 тыс.Год назад
Ugandan athletes do strides after their easy runs and before workouts and races. Most experienced runners will be well versed on strides but they were a new concept for me. I wasn’t aware of all the benefits they provide including making you run faster, improving your running form, aiding recovery and providing an effective warm up for workouts and races. In this video I share what I have learn...
6 insights into the Ugandan athlete diet

Some of these will provide benefits, others won't. I provide some pros and cons for some of them. Times...
Are hills their secret to running faster?
Просмотров 3,7 тыс.Год назад
I filmed athletes in Kapchorwa doing a hill workout. Athletes here run lots of hills on a daily basis so I find it surprising that they do these hill sessions as well. Hills are great for building strength and think they are one of the reasons behind the success of Ugandan athletes. This session lasts 45 minutes and involve continuous hill repeats with recovery on the downhill. Timestamps 00:17...
Ugandan athletes talk about their sleep
Просмотров 6 тыс.Год назад
Sharing more insights from my training in Kapchorwa, Uganda. We all know that sleep is important for training. Athletes here rest and sleep a lot. Athletes in elite camps are privileged to have less commitments and use that opportunity to rest even more. I speak with athletes to discuss their sleep patterns and their thoughts on sleep. Your videos always give a different perspective.
I subscribed almost immediately. I'm super keen to train in Kapchorwa. I've spent 9 months training in Kaptagat and had the chance to run at Mt Elgon. It's late and I must sleep but I am excited to see how your series of videos progress.
I do 45m of elevation per km, but I am a trail runner and focus a lot in elevation, to put things into prespective. 130k with +2500 is just mindblowing for me. Mad respect for these athletes, running at those crazy speeds while accumulating so much elevation when living in altitude. Thanks for the quality content.
You’re welcome. Thanks for sharing - your elevation gain is impressive wow
Your videos are awesome! What is the best way to support the channel and the runners you feature?
Thanks! And kind of you to offer support 🙏🏿 I’ve almost finalised a plan to allow viewers to donate towards gear for the athletes and to see the athletes actually receive it, will share soon
@alvinkarangizi Great, I'll be on the lookout for that!
👀👀👀
Kenya and Ethiopia set the pace for Africa in athletics
True, they’ve had a competitive running culture for way longer
Bro runs faster than my national record and cant live from running..
Bring him to your country!
Yeah, easy to overlook that the runners struggling to medal here are still top 0.5%, probably 0.1%, of the world
Grow this channel please don't stop
Thanks - I’ll keep going 🙏🏿
❤ always enjoy your videos.
Thank you so much!
It breaks my heart to hear that Wakana Nelson does not earn enough money to support his family of 6 children despite his job as a prison officer. Parents do so much for their children and therefore for society and they get nothing in return. I'm wishing him and his family all the best.
Thanks for sharing. Yes life is tough for him and many other athletes. I too hope for their success whether it be through running or other ventures 🙏🏿
Yes Alvin K,becoming a good father like Joshua Cheptegei may motivate Ugandan🇺🇬 athletes, yesterday's 14/12/24Joshua Cheptegei Christmas kids run, top 3 winners awarded full bursaries,
He’s doing wonders for his community!
👏👏👏👏
Interesting 'running for fun' raised an eyebrow!
It’s work for them but I imagine it’s more enjoyable than other jobs
God bless u ❤
You too 🙏🏿
Correction: Wakana has the rank of prison warder/officer, not warden. Thanks
Yet another insightful share, Alvin!
Thanks!
i just run, it ain't that deep, no motivation, no discipline, i just run
Nice!
Glad to see a new video from you! Greetings from Argentina!
Thanks for watching!
Yes we are ready to hear from you again and again mr karangizi l also run to change my lifestyle but for me am in Kampala
Thanks! In what ways do you want it to change your lifestyle?
@alvinkarangizi hope in future to join competition for prize money
@@RONNIET-rh7peI see, all the best with your training!
Great insight Alvin, thanks again for all ! Do you know if the Ugandans (even the elites, Jacob joshua etc..) are doing the morning sessions(Long Runs, Trackwork, Fartleks) fasted or they eat something ? And about what time they start the morning sessions after waking up, like one hour after waking up ? Cheers!
You’re welcome! They generally don’t eat before their easy runs, the ones I train with also don’t tend to eat before workouts but not sure about Jacob and Joshua. The majority also don’t fuel their long runs, maybe ribena if they can afford. Those in elite camps take carb drinks like maurten. Their easy runs start as soon as the sun rises around 6.15am, they wake up around 45mins before. Their workouts generally start at 7am. Hope that helps.
My hieght is 5ft.3inch . Can i take the 5 k for 18 minutes?
Why not? A lot of the great athletes here are that height, even shorter and run sub 14min 5k
@alvinkarangizi I try my best and whole energy but I can't reach the time of 18.
Great information ❤
Thanks!
My regular circuit is about 62 feet per mile. I live in a hilly city - Atlanta - and I consider my route quite difficult so I am really impressed by the 100 ft/mile that this gentleman in Uganda runs. Nice video.
Thanks! Yeah it’s very hilly here!
72 ft/mile this last week. Some weeks less.
Thanks for sharing! 72 is hilly!
I do about 45 feet per mile - about 3000 feet per week ; not good enough I guess 😝
Thanks for sharing! That’s still quite hilly 👍🏿
❤❤
Another great video! Thanks mate!
Thanks!
incredible!
Wow, the small detail you make in this video is amazing. This data is very important for me to put in my training. Well done 👍
Glad you found it useful!
Fantastic video again, thanks for making this. Thats a lot of elevation, wow. I'm from the Netherlands so my elevation is only 2m per 1km haha. I try to go to the bridge in my local park to do 'hills'
Thanks! Treadmill with incline is an option, but I much prefer running outdoors
My app is giving weird readings for elevations that don't make sense. Great video as always.
Yes Alvin K, yo video is so so motivating, 🙏keep it up💪
Thanks! 🙏🏿

@ great place to train, send me an email if you do come here and we can arrange to meet for training 👍🏿
Thanks for the numbers. As a slow amateur runner I have similar mileage per week (120 km), but only 800 m elev. gain.
You’re welcome, cheers for sharing your numbers too
Super useful video. Very well made as usual! Incredible athlete

It'd be super cool to train with these potential athletes.👍I appreciate the opportunity to gift something to them
Yes great experience being here. Thinking about the best way to get watches here and then will share opportunity for viewers to support the athletes 🙏🏿

I like Phillip’s point about focusing on the race and cutting out distractions to be mentally prepared and rested. Love your content, thank you for sharing. I’ve got my first marathon this Sunday and your videos have helped me in my training!
