Can SPANISH BRANDY be a better alternative to COGNAC...🤔🧐
Spanish Brandy has many fans. It also tends to be cheaper than many French Brands and Cognacs. But how does it really compare to Cognac? Can it be better value? Does Spanish Brandy taste better than Cognac? This will be my first proper tasting of Spanish Brandy, so today, I have 4x Torres Brandy samples, and I will be blind tasting them and then comparing them to 3 of my Favourite Cognacs.

I've been watching your rum content for a while now. I am primarily a whiskey drinker, but I have started exploring other spirits, and my next stop is brandy. I was very pleasantly surprised to see you recently started a brandy channel! I look forward to seeing what content you produce and learning about this interesting spirit category.

There's also a California brandy made by a guy who had a cognac still moved to Cali, he's from a French cognac family. Germain Robin. You might want to try and review that as well. It was purchased by E&J Gallo in 2017 but it's not a Gallo brandy per se. Cheers.

At 70 years old, I have been a Courvoisier fan since childhood. When we suffered from colds or flu as children, my parents would prepare for us a small pour of Courvoisier in a small snifter, make us sit in front of a warm fireplace, and tell us to breath deeply from the snifter, and sip slowly. To this day, VS is my go to Cognac, even though I keep VSOP and XO on hand, I buy VS by the case. I drink it neat. I just prefer the younger Cognac, perhaps because I was introduced to it at a young age. Very good video, informative content. Well done.

I've tried to drink Cognac VSOP. I there a difference between the XO and the VSOP with regards to the brittleness of it or the alcohol being noticeable. For example I'll drink cask strength Bourbon no problem, you don't get any alcohol or ethanol just a warming heat. Something like Vodka for example is for me pure ethanol. I ask because I found the VSOP to have some of that ethanol, and have not wanted to spend the money on XO due to it.

I actually cannot stand grain spirits. So whiskey and bourbon smells and tastes rather unpleasant to me, but I really love brandy and other fruit distilates. Haven't tried calvados yet, but it's definitely on my list. Just ordered Torres Jaime I 30 year, will see is it any good.

Love the cognac videos, and love the blind tasting videos. Would like to see you do a few more comparison videos of related cognacs and brandys. For example, comparing Remy Martin VSOP and Remy Martin 1738. Or comparing VSOP from some other popular houses like Hine to your top picks from the VSOP video (Martell and Remy). Another fun comparison video would be comparing your top picks from the VSOP video to the cheap XO's like Cognac Park or Kirkland (not sure you can get that in UK). And then in the future when you feel like you have a good handle on cognacs, would love to get some cognac and armangac comparisons. In general I find the comparisons give a really good reference point as a viewer, so if you're reviewing an armeniac or a smaller cognac house, it's helpful to directly compare it to something from the big houses.

Thanks for your review, Courvoisier on my family is the most renowned, Hennessy came second and Martell third, but to me Martell was the best, but the best I have tasted in my life was a Courvoisier Napoleon Champagne bottle that I could never find again , I purchased it for my second son to be opened when he became 18 years old.... superb!! better than the one I had as Remy Martin XO on my first born child when he became 18 years of age.

I, only recently, fell in love with brandy. I’ve enjoyed bourbon and scotch over the years but things changed drastically in 2020 at the age of 66, At that time, I knew absolutely NOTHING about brandy or cognac and simply, on a whim, asked the liquor store clerk for a recommendation. To my great fortune and luck he recommended the Pierre Ferrand Reserve and to this day it’s the bottle I compare all others to. I’ve repeatedly purchased and gifted it without hesitation. I thoroughly enjoyed this episode and your channel was an instant subscribe. Looking forward to future episodes. Thanks!

Wonderful video. My wife will always request a cognac old fashioned at restaurants (from her experiences at Wisconsin supper clubs) but I’ve never tried making one for her. Oddly enough, being a bourbon and scotch guy, my recent and first introduction to cognac was the Pierre Ferrand Reserve. It caught me totally off guard and I absolutely loved it. At this point, I’m already looking forward to treating both of us by making your Cognac Old Fashioned with the Ferrand 10 Generations. Thank you Steve !! (p.s. We’re staying at a Wisconsin B&B next week so I’ll need to pack a few extra items).

No wonder you cant say soaked sultanas after those few brandies 🤣 Have had Torres in Spain many years ago and loved it. Found it today in UK. I am trying to get into a bottle of Torres 10. Cant get the top twisted off nor the seal off. So I looked on You tube on how to get into it. No help anywhere. Then found you in the process and was glued into watching you. So in the end (don't laugh) I got my large metal extendable gripper pliers and yay, they worked. I did giggle, so no doubt will everyone else reading this . 😅 I will now save my pretty pennies up and buy the Torres Hors D'age.

We just got back from Spain now 2 weeks ago and I purchased a bottle of Carlos I 1520 for 98 quid at Alicante airport. This is the perfect balance between very old Cognac and the thick caramelly liquid that is Brandy de Jerez in my opinion. I had a very old bottle of Cognac purchased on the way down to Spain to compare. Now of course the bottle is a Godsend heavy piece of glass with that perfect pour, no matter how much you drink it pours perfectly. Ok that's not really important, the liquid within has a lot of the 30-40 year old blend of Cognac Hors d'age does, but it's also very thick and velvety on arrival. It has a bit of leather, caramel, vanilla along with the nuttiness associated with sherry and also dark fruits galore. It's not overtly sweet like many Spanish brandies but instead dries out nicely after the first thick hit of caramel and burned sugar. I usually enjoy the regular Grand reserves at 12-15 average that you can get at the supermarked in Spain for 9 quid, in the Solera that have a lot of this but are often too sweet on the finish. But this one turns dry early and releases a lot of the leathery notes, nail polish, old cheese and dried up cream and so on of a very old cognac. Best of both words I say. Too bad it's a limited release and hopefully they have a lot more left when we go back in February. This bottle is 0667/5321.
