This method evolved into a pedagogy for insider witnessing practices, which they taught together for 10 ...

Always Cooperating
Просмотров 732 месяца назад
One of the guiding principles in narrative therapy is that clients are always cooperating and communicating their comfort level with the pace of change. Charley Lang rejects the label of 'resistant' for clients who do not follow the therapist's path, instead placing the responsibility on the therapist to be flexible and adapt to the client's needs. He stresses the importance of respecting clien...

All Therapy Is Political
Просмотров 812 месяца назад
Charley Lang emphasizes how narrative therapy recognizes the political nature of therapy. He recalls being struck by the focus on inherent power systems in society during his graduate studies, noting that no other therapeutic model they studied addressed this. He believes that clients often find therapy liberating because it allows them to critically examine societal structures rather than them...

Thank you Charley. I remember putting a " banner" up that read "The Person is not the Problem, the Problem is the Problem" in the meeting room at the youth service agency where I was working as a family therapist and training other workers and interns back in the '80s. It was like a trail marker to help follow a given path.

Kay is hot a very sexy woman, she has been my lecturer she is so sexy, but gosh they really take this so seriously. They (her and a bunch of other counsellors) literally treat Epston like a god, to me this narrative approach to therapy is just a bunch of bable. All Epston and whityes work seems to be a bunch of complicated words used to describe very simple things (peoples stories). All this really is is the use of critical theory (Think the german school) applied to someones life (or what they can remember of it).

I have worked with and developed methods to empower and heal traumatized trafficked people since 2003. I am a teacher by trade , worked with run aways in London and vulnerable immigrants, also worked as a dancer, actor and ran my own company teaching English to big companies. In the 90s I trained in many different forms of therapy psycho drama, gestalt, neuro linguist psychology and somatic experiencing. In 2003 I became an outreach social worker with no qualifications as part of the Danish Action Plan to provide services for trafficked women in prostitution. Together with a group of lowly highly professional social workers we developed methods to contact and provide serivces for and with trafficked women. In 2007 I founded my own NGO HopeNow. I am and always will be therefore not only a lowly social worker but a psycho therapist without a degree in psychology. I love your story about Michael White. All of my work is based on narrative be it told through the body, touch, the voice in paint or and words. I am not an academic and find it a challenge to describe in words and document what occurs when it is sucessful .Any ideas or any one out there who loves to write Michelle mildwater michelle@hopenow.dk

Thanks, Dr. Doctor. I enjoyed your open letter both as a narrative therapist and as one who has struggled with asthma and it's treatment throughout life. I have strong memories and feelings that stem from my parents' construction of the meaning of asthma during my youth. In that time and place, with psychoanalytic paradigms dominant, they were recruited into seeing it as a psychosomatic manifestation of unresolved issues. Not that they spoke of it that way, I only recall them wondering why I wasn't yet "outgrowing" it. We've all outgrown that paradigm. I still use medicine to treat episodic inflammation, but the meanings have changed for the better. I deeply appreciate your efforts to influence how your medical colleagues make meaning with their patients.

What a wonderful little clip. Great idea/approach. Two things that sparkled for me: 1) a more general theme (partially gleaned, partially projected) of Michael ‘being there’ with you/the client/person precisely where there is new ground to stand on, a ground ripe with possibility but also a space where/when things can be scary, uncomfortable, hard to grasp/ articulate (the liminal ?) … where one could easily imagine an urge to retreat (I have this picture of someone who has earned your trust saying ‘come on in, the waters fine’. Although this analogy might also imply him being in front of you which doesn’t feel quite right). 2) Sarah’s mention of Michael point about the need for a certain periphery vision. I like this. It goes well with the po-mo view of discourses disclosing and lending focus to various things, where other things - although actually in plain sight, are ‘seen through’, serve as a background for what is foregrounded, invisible in their use (Schopenhauer/Heidegger) but which are actually there all along; and the need for us therapists to cultivate a radar of sorts (double listening, ab but implicit etc) maybe a certain ‘nocturnal vision’ (amazing what strange creatures emerge from the dark once you turn that damn light of truth out) to help break this reified crust and draw out (side shadow etc) these background aspects into our peripheral awareness/vision - yno - render the familiar strange for a moment, exoticize the domestic and all that. Anyways. I’m getting carried away now. Ha. Cheers guys. Brig Wood
