Eric's Table -Napoleonic Battles

Добавлен 14 дек 2011
What is on Eric's Table? Typically, you will find a war game or historic themed board game. My primary interest in the Napoleonic Era, but occasionally I will feature a game or discussion from another time period. Join me to learn about history, learn about games, and learn how we can use games to better understand history!
Is "Albuera 1811 2nd Edition" Worth the Upgrade?
Eric compares the components of the 1st and 2nd editions of "1811: Albuera" from the Tactical Workshop.

Waterloo Solitaire: Overview and Play-through.
I gamed a lot when I was younger, but stopped when my group fell apart and my children were young. I have been slowly getting back into gaming over the past year by dusting off my old games and scooping some up on Noble Knight. I am subscribed to may game channels on youtube, which I love watching. One thing that I would love to see in your description of the videos, is the channel of the person you are playing with, as I am not familiar with everyone yet, and would like to check their channels as well if they have 1. In your video on Eylau with Matt, he mentions his channel, but I am not sure what it is.
Thank you for these great videos gentlemen. I supported the game on Gamefound and received my copy but, as I also live in a remote area in Canada, I do not have anyone local to play it with. So great to see it on Vassal and also enjoy seeing people play in slowly, which helps me grasp the rules better.
I find it a little strange to punish players from assaulting a hex from two different hexes, with one unit in line and the other in column. The whole point of the orde mixte is to combine the fire power of the line with the movement and moral boost of a column?
@@MarshalDavout-o7r As you might have heard in our discussion, this and other questions still remain to be clarified.
What rules system are you guys using.. thanks
@@russbarker9066 We are playing with Regs 30 for this livestream.
Eric.. what rules system are you guys using for the La Bataille games you are playing now.. thanks
@@russbarker9066 Marshal Enterprise games are designed with the Premier rules. The tactics we discussed in this video can be applied with any of the rule set for La Bataille. These tactics can also be used for any battalion or regimental scale Napoleonic wargame.
The landscape was not flat at all. You had a stream or small river that ran through the battlefield, and it had steep Banks on both sides, and then also where the coalition army was deployed there were heels, and so they were able to move units without the knowingwhere they were moving to and what their strength was. This was not a flat opened area.
Thanks gents, gotta go. o/
Another alternative, providing you have access to a small number of figures, etc., is “One Hour Wargames” a book presenting rules for at least half a dozen periods (e.g. Ancient, Medieval, Napoleonic, etc.) The author presents basic concepts common to all periods first, then each period gets a brief (stress the word brief) introduction, then a couple of pages of rules tailored for that period. Of special interest are 30 simple scenarios, useable for any period, followed by tables specifying how big the armies can be-6 units is the maximum!-and what types of units will be there, determined by die roll. As I mentioned, you will need to have access to figures, a little terrain, etc., but never very much; someone in the hobby can easily help you out. (I’ve been in it for 60-plus years, and could probably provide dozens of set ups within minutes.) I’ve given away hundreds of figures to young gamers, and I’m sure there must be others.
I’m not touching this until I see the 1.5 rules.
What is your opinion of the new La Bataille de Kulm Kickstarter? Do you feel that it would be a good way to try La Bataille? That might be a good video.
@@SquadPainter It looks like Kulm, like Vauchamps, will be a good introduction game for La Bataille. I interviewed the game designer and publisher on the channel two weeks ago. If you haven’t watched it yet, here is the link. ruclips.net/user/livenTP7t7m5Aoo?si=Dr_XILdqlSkRuobA
@@EricsTableNapoleonicBattles How unobservant of me... I actually went through your video list and must have skipped right over it. My apologies. I gave it a watch and it is great. Thank you for recording it.
Ah. I see what I did. I looked in the Videos section and not in the listings of the Live videos.
I really feel burned by the 1st edition, a $100 game that has undergone so many changes for the 2nd edition. To be specific: The 1st edition map was horrid. The 1st edition counters were terrible, too. The values seem to have changed, really? We found the 1st edition to be a “kitchen sink” design and shelved it. Way too amateur. I respect that you have a more positive take Eric, but even so there are just too many different items to learn/forget when comparing the two editions. We won’t be purchasing any more games from Tactical Workshop, sorry.
@@steveoh9285 I completely understand. I have had a few purchases that were disappointing. I was fortunate in that I had a good experience playing the game. My biggest complaint with the first edition was the map. From what I see on the GameFound program, they are selling the 2nd edition game to 1st edition owners for only $40.
Interesting comments about the counters. I've always hated the fact that the La Bataille Leaders have a "0" on their counter. It just makes it easier to confuse them with combat units if you're quickly glancing across the map. The Movement Allowance would be more than enough, and a single number at the bottom of the counter would scream "Leader."
I agree. It would be much more clear if Leaders did not have the 0. It's an easy mistake.
With the popularity of S&T's Ney vs Wellington, I proposed a Wellington's Victory game system version of Albuera, and wrote the Feedback proposal that appeared in a later issue of S&T. The proposal failed miserably, but I then treacherously purchased my second La Bataille game, Clash of Arms' Albuera (GDW Moscowa was the first).
La Bat Albuera is a very fun game. Good challenge for both sides.
Subscribed. I don't have enough time to play right now, but I tune in to imagine how much I would like to.
LOL. Yes, I tune into some other wargame channels to imagine what I might play too! Thanks for subscribing.
A bit of my old regimental history. Looks interesting.
Cool. Which regiment?
Matt Here and I have added a couple videos on how to use the VASSAL module for Eylau 1807 at my site. www.youtube.com/@SoD-BattlesofNapoleon
In the rulebook: interesting how they put a "matte white" on the glossy paper for some headings and captions/notes.
@@Stiglr Yes, the designer or historical notes pertaining to a certain topic are in a white box with red print. Specific rule’s information are printed in black on a tan box.
Question: How are you getting Vassal to activate a pointer beacon to flag a hex? To thus indicate certain hex.
@@YukonJack88 Press and hold Atl key while left-clicking on that spot on the map.
@@EricsTableNapoleonicBattles Thanks Eric
Your moving units in line 6 hexes, using all 6 MP. Don’t units in line get a -2 MP when moving over clear terrain?
@@mmerritt521 This is a different game system. What you said would be true in most of the La Bataille rules.
I did not watch this live. But I just finished it up and this is brilliant. Thank you guys for playing. I was enjoying what you found and what you didn't in the module and I've got a list of about 204 things that I want to change and fix. That's just the module. I don't have other thing to do with the rules because something know that they're working on them now still but I don't know when they're gonna release. Hopefully I'll have a live stream playing a beginning scenario at some point
@@war-at-sea-fleet-command Glad you enjoyed it. I am planning more livestreams of this game system. Stay tuned.
thanks again for another great stream!

Great video. Lots of good information.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you. Enjoyed this very much!
I’m glad you found it interesting.
In regard to Australia, there is no value added tax, or import or custom fees to be paid on importing the game. But I am sure the shipping costs will still be eye watering.
Indeed. International shipping costs have become prohibitive.
Looking forward to this.
Same here!
Great stream. Lots of good information.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is actually kind of freaky.
Yes, I found it eerie how "human" they sounded.
la meilleur explication de la victoire de Wellington à "Waterloo en 1815."....... "Semper Fidelis" for France. 😉
I have enjoyed La Bataille for decades, but frankly my enthusiasm for these new games is waning. The high cost, the errors, the lack of printed rules, etc., all conspire to dwindle my enthusiasm. Regardless, thank you for the look Eric.
@@steveoh9285 Hi Steve. I understand your feelings. Given that they are a small outfit that does this limited run, they are not going to have the resources to do a game with the same elements as one of the larger publishing houses. Even larger publishers have similar issues with production. That was the case with the new Eylau game from Sound of Drums.
Costs continue to rise. The price of the games in the series have been fairly steady, however. Remember there are three separate games in this package.
Well done and thanks! Got mine a couple of weeks ago #375, looks good, as always.
@@richardchampion4826 Thanks. I hope you enjoy playing the scenarios!
this off the subject, but what is the name of the game that is pictured in your intro with the round and square pieces (they look like they're plastic) right before the image of napoleon?
@@deedubb118 it is from a game published in 2019 called “Marengo, French Empire Series”. To my knowledge, it is the only one in this style the company has published. I did a video reviewing it a few years ago.
@ ok, thanks
Nice game serie I have Friedland and Heilsberg. The trimming of the maps was an problem at Heilsberg, but Marshal Enterprise handeled that very kind and customer friendly. But the price of the game, expensive shipping to Europe and finally taxes ( oh dear, Mr. Trump) on shipping and price let the cost explode to 300 Euros.
Agree, these games are more expensive than they should be, not even counting taxes and shipping. I like the subject matter, so I'm going to have to think this over if I want to commit over $200 to a game. No paper rule book, etc.
@@SeraphinCherubin Yes, I understand the shipping and VAT make them very expensive.
@@MrProsat Marshal Enterprises only does a small run of 400 games, so they don’t get the volume discount that a larger print run would allow. As such, their cost per unit is higher. I know they are aware of the high cost customers are paying and try to give folks a good game.
@@EricsTableNapoleonicBattles Yes, true.
Against the Odds published a great intro game on La Bataille de Vauchamps, which used slightly streamlined Premier rules and was very popular, both for bringing in new folks and also for having a smaller footprint. It worked successfully and the game is entirely OOP. ATO is now 'funding' a similar game on the 1813 Battle of Kulm. Lots of great stretch goals already and more to come. It appears I can't put the URL in or even mention the 'funding' program by name, but go to the biggest one (starts with a K) and search for "Kulm" and you will find it.

I just got my copy of Zorndorf in the mail today so I’m following your game closely. What a beautiful map!
I'm guessing it can't read tables and charts, though?
Not sure. The system will allow you to upload charts. I am not sure how well the system can understand those charts. This is an area that will require additional experimentation.
@@EricsTableNapoleonicBattles I uploaded the rulebook for Jours de Gloire. I'll have to try uploading the charts, too.
A huge map for a little game. Overproduced. Something that could have been a blast and then was transformed into a two player tug of war war. Really dissapointed...taking dust in my airmchair
@@elcid894 I agree the map is bigger than it needs to be. My understanding was that an earlier version of the game used miniatures, hence the need for larger spaces. My friends and I still had fun playing it.
