BucketPonds is a channel focused on jar aquariums (Jarrariums) and some outdoor projects. (The Oasis)
In the jars I attempt to capture and nurture all sorts of aquatic life. Detritivores like worms and crustaceans. Along with snails and insects.
With the goal of permanently incorporating each specie into our Aquarium Ecosystems. As we study and look for possible benefits of their presence.
I call this: The Creature Collection. Our menagerie. The collection is constantly growing. Especially with the help of our friends online.
---
Within the Oasis my goal is simple: to provide a habitat for wild frogs, anoles, skinks, and other animals. While also growing tons of pond plants and flowers for the local pollinators.
--
For now any revenue from the channel and our Patreon is directed right back into BucketPonds. Financing the jars and pools I use in the videos. Paying for supplies and kits. New equipment. Etc.

Hey guys! Today we're building an experimental green water Ecosphere. Complete with aquarium plants, live snails, detritus worms, and pet crustaceans. This jar, when finished, should last for well over a decade with bustling life inside.
I'm calling it "The Community Ecosphere" because it was built with parts from many sources. Mostly gifts from you guys! Along with some stuff we've acquired over the course of 2024.
The full setup for this Ecosphere will take about one year. As I am working off a great suggestion from the audience. I'll be opening this jar periodically in a sem...

Comparing Our Sealed Paludariums! Ecosphere Update
In Australia we have a native species called Myriophyllum. It is similar to hornwort. I love it when it is submerged, but once it reaches the surface and floats it changes alot and becomes unattractive to me. Keeping it submerged requires endless trimming and is not easy. Difficult species to manage. But the aerial form is part of its life cycle. It will eventually leave the water and become emersed (even growing terrestrial on the banks as water levels drop) and looks very different. The most common species where I live looks like an algae infestation (red algae). It is not. It is Verrucosum. Very unattractive. I suspect that is what is happening to your hornwort. It is preparing for its aerial form. Not sure if hornwort does this? Never had hornwort.
Yep its exactly like Myriophyllum verucossum, in the video is the floating form when it reaches the surface. Can get 6 foot in length and very ugly, completely different to its juvenile submersed form. The next stage is aerial and it will look different again.
The marble is interesting. I live in a hard water region and my dirt produces moderately hard water. I am only beginning to understand how important that is. Acidification is a real problem. Interesting. My cheapest aquarium cost me 6AUD. It was the plastic tub lol
Can safe to be cooked for consumption?
this is so cool! Great use of the hypnum!
such an awesome setup! I actually have a glass drink dispenser that I've been planning something fun with!
I have to say that your channel is pretty unique. i think you could keep aquaria for decades and still struggle to understand what is going on in your jars. Green water or any coloured water I find hard to do and even harder to get my head around. All I know is it is full of life - far beyond what one typically sees in the average aquarium. You get to the point where you start seeing the fish as the least significant life form in the water.
Hey Solar! Good to hear from you bro. Thank you. It's a struggle at times, since I'm not really in the aquarium nor the nano aquarium niche. Feels like I'm over in the corner doing my own thing 😅 But there are many people into a similar sort of hobby. Meeting up talking shop in the corners of RUclips Reddit etc. Lately the community is asking for tips on green water. I see people having trouble getting it to culture and grow. Using all sorts of special equipment and such. But on my end it's a bit like a piece of furniture in your house. It's just there and I don't think about it much. One thing I think that helps a lot is that I don't run monocultures. Every jar is a mixed bag of the most virulent life forms. Like my green water is so much more than just algae. It's bacteria, phytoplankton and so many other organisms working in tandem. It's messy but effective and relatively easy in comparison to more direct sterile approaches.
@@BucketPonds OK. It is fascinating that you are able to maintain this long term. I have had a daphnia culture for example but they crashed. Been a difficult 2024 for me. All my outdoor planted ponds failed and my plant bank (i have about 15 species) is dying. I am glad the ponds failed because it shows me that my indoor problem is the same as a pond. Plants do require alot of nutrition it seems and because I don’t use fertilisers it was always going to be a problem. Have some ideas though. Hopefully it will start to show. I am determined to find a natural solution to plant nutrition. To me the planted tank is like agriculture. Much easier to use chemicals, but the natural approach will work if you know how to. Will natural farming compare to modern agriculture. No. Chemicals and fertilisers sustain modern farms, no argument there.
One thing I am really happy about right now is a few years ago I grew some terrestrial moss underwater for 12 months (that it was a terrestrial moss is debatable, I cannot be sure). I collected it in winter and it died by the end of that summer. I assumed it was the water temperature which went from sub 10 deg C to about 30 deg C that summer. No heater, no pump. Just a pond like tank. I thought it did not like warm water. I am pretty sure now that it was a lack of nutrients. I am going to try again. It was the most beautiful aquarium I have ever had. As good looking as any Amano tank when it was in its prime. It was stunning.
It will be nice to see it over time. I'll trade you some samples for one of those rad Bucketponds bracelets!
Hey Wheelbite! You have a deal! Let me get with the wife and see how she had them made. Will let you know
Whoa! An unmasked Terry! 😂
I forgot all about this video!
@@BucketPonds 😂
I use Egg shells for calcium for bladder, ramhorn snails & Scuds.
Hey blabberwulf! That's a great idea. I've had to add crushed/boiled egg shells to the invert tank a few times. Do you have any tips on where to place it in the aquarium? I was treating it like biomedia in the filter for example
@@BucketPonds I just peel hard boiled eggs to make eggsalad and just drop a couple egg shell fragment in the tank and let it dissolve or the snails & scuds find it. Then I add more when I don't see any large fragments. I save excess egg shells in a air tight container for future use. Scuds are great for cleaning plants of algae or anything they can find, I don't worry about dead snails, the scuds clean up so quickly. Scuds are great for food for bumblebees gobies, galaxy rasbora, guppies & such. I even feed them garlic powder or basil once a month. The fish eat it too. it has been shown in scientific studies that garlic, actively kill parasites including freshwater Ich, marine white spot (also known as marine Ich), and others I don't crush the shells at all, big pieces are easy to monitor and the shrimp ( scuds ) & snails don't mind. The gobies use it for a cave for awhile.
I have a odd idea. What do you think about add peepee to the jur.
this video is amazing! I have a jar from the ditch out back but now I really want to give this a go!
Hey Josh! Yes go for it! Nothing wrong with a direct pond/ditch to jar Ecosphere. But with a little careful planning I bet you can build something amazing
@@BucketPonds I’ll ponder this one ! excited to implement your method
I thought the main focus of this video would be the green water and how to create your own. I do hope that you'll be able to show, in a video, how anyone can create their own green water.
Hey Raf! I see your point! And yes I'm happy to deliver. I'll get started tonight.
@@BucketPonds Fantastic, I'm looking forward to it. Thank you.
Dont appologies for being different! Thats why we watch you! Great looking jar, I would love to find some wild plants like you have!
Thank you Mia 🥲 you have no idea how much that means! Might be time to invest in eccentricity, instead of trying to hide it 🤔
I have always wondered about these "Ecospheres," I read an ad for the purchase of one of them that was already sealed when I was on an airplane (ages ago.) This is very fascinating. Thank you for the wonderful video!!!
I remember you mentioning how green water is rather prolific in your area, n seems to make its way into everything. I'm quite jealous, I can't seem to grow it to save my life, Indoors or outdoors. I've got plenty of varieties of algae, but green water remains elusive
This is going to be fascinating to follow. I like the idea of extending opening times. I hope to see many years of it. Now I’ve gotta go check out Seth’s aquariums 😂
Thanks for saving the dragonfly naiad. They are beneficial insects
How did you get the green water?
Wild pond samples originally. Spread through intentional cross-contamination in all my tanks
@@BucketPonds I get my water from a stagnant pond but unfortunately, it is not green. I guess I'll have to look for other resources. Thank you for all of your informational and inspiring videos 😃
I love your videos but I don't see ny that show how you made the build?
Hey Spiritual! I'll try to find a link to the build video. ruclips.net/video/a152WJv8wLA/видео.htmlsi=MQ55IRKd9f2mFalC
@@BucketPonds Thank you!!
That’s awesome! Wish I could get my ostracods going like that.
The larger ones are voracious! Our original little zebra striped species is present but struggling to compete. I hate to say it but the big guys are a definite upgrade.

@@BucketPonds lol
Thank you for this video, wouldn’t have realised it was ‘long’ it was so absorbing. Can’t wait for your next vid as l aspire to start a shrimp ‘habitat’ God bless your endeavours 🙏✝️
yeah ive noticed hornwort's shape is highly dependant on the amount of light it receives. Be aware that if you move any of that outdoor grown hornwort back indoors, it'll take some time to acclimate back to artificial light and will most likely shed nearly all its needles. Which ofc is no big deal for the hornwort, but it'll just resemble a dead christmas tree for a bit while it grows back its needles
Thank you for this idea! I've gotta get to the dollar store and a bucket! :)
Hope everyone's having a great day
